Subject: Winter Steelhead
( 1-28-01 ) Well here we sit with another week gone by with no appreciable rain. The Rogue is at bear bones flows & gin clear. Winter Steelhead fishing SLOW! I fished below Agness ( 30 miles up from the ocean ) in the lower river two days last week. The first day we never had a bite. The second after noon we did hit five fish. However they were small fish for this time of the year. They ran for 14 to 26 inches. We were fishing small baits of roe with a Birdy drifter above the roe, behind jet planers. My customer was from the Portland area. He was asking if I had tried the new Bubblegum colored 4" plastic worms for the Steelhead. I said I had heard of the method being used in Canada, but I had not tried it. He said it is becoming popular in the northern Oregon & Washington area. Well at this point I'm so frustrated I would do or try almost anything. You know? He had some with him. So I rigged one up & put it out behind a jet diver. Well when we started hitting fish the first four hit the roe & Birdy drifter. So when I pulled back out to try the spot again I said to Mike, well you see how good that pink worn is. So about five minutes goes by, ya you guessed it, down went the rod with the worm on it. The biggest Steelhead of the afternoon. Well just great, now I need to try them again to see if it was a fluke or maybe them Canadan fisherman are on to something. Something to think about anyway. Good luck out there. Ron |
