Well, the recent cold front has dropped the water temp to the low 70’s. This will get the big MAMA’s moving. The past week was the normal with plenty of small fish on lipless crank baits, tail spinners, Texas and Carolina rigs. Most fish are coming from 6 to 23 feet of water. Main lake points and humps are the key targets. The Yellow bass are starting to stack up on the deep water. Spoons and tail spinners will catch these fish. Remember the little fishermen at this time as the yellow bass are pretty easy to catch and they will have a ball. Use your electronics and locate the fish and drop a marker and have them to drop a spoon over the side and bounce it off the bottom. Don’t forget there is no size or limit on Yellow bass and they eat real good. Be sure and show everyone how to take off the fish as they have very sharp gill plates that will cut a finger like a razor blade. Remember the big fish like to eat the Yellow Bass and when you bring a yellow up don’t be surprised to see a big bass follow it up or take your yellow away from you.
The big fish are scattered and few and far between but a jig and pig pitched around timber and grass in ten to twelve feet of water may get you a big bite. A big crank bait fished around creek bends can be very deadly this time of year. Buzz baits over the grass very early in the mornings has been a good choice for some nice fish. This wont last long when the sun gets up. A tail spinner fished around the grass, fished like a spinner bait , because of shad size, is another good choice. The best fishing of the year is just about to get started. The cool mornings and then settling out to warmer afternoons. Don’t forget it will be almost ten degrees cooler on the lake all day. You may wont to put some warm clothes in the boat. Rain gear is a good choice as it will block the wind and keep you warm. The crappie are still running small but the numbers of keepers are getting better. 18 to 25 feet over 30 foot of water is the best depth. Jigs and minnows are the best baits.
