FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WALLEYE RECORDS MOSTLY VACANT
Do you want to get your name in the IGFA Record Book? Go walleye fishing. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) now maintains line class state records for walleye in 19 states. The three line classes for which state records are kept are 4 lb., 12 lb. and 20 lb. class. More line classes will be added in the future.
The three line class record categories for walleye are totally vacant in 15 of the 19 states. Mike Leech, President of IGFA said, “The reason so many record categories are vacant for walleye is not because of lack of enthusiasm for walleye fishing, but rather the lack of information on IGFA’s state freshwater line class program. We are trying to let the public know about this relatively new program so more anglers can have the thrill of catching a record, receiving a beautiful IGFA record certificate and their name listed in the annual IGFA record book as well as the IGFA member newsletter.”
The record program recognized 5 of each states most popular freshwater species. The states in which walleye are recognized are: Colorado; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Kansas; Maryland; Michigan; Minnesota; Montana; Nebraska; New York; North Dakota; Ohio; Oregon; Pennsylvania; South Dakota; Washington; West Virginia; Wisconsin; and Wyoming. There are 50 vacant walleye records waiting to be filled among those states and the minimum size required to submit a record is 1 pound.
All IGFA state freshwater records are listed on the IGFA website, which is www.igfa.org. There is also a record application form which can be printed from the site. In keeping with IGFA’s decades long tradition of promoting catch and release, anglers do not have to kill the fish in order to submit a world record. The fish can be weighed on a certified scale, photographed, measured and released alive.
The IGFA state line class record program is separate from the all tackle record program in each state where rules may vary from state to state.
IGFA is a non-profit conservation and record keeping organization with members in over 115 countries and territories. Its headquarters are located in the 60,000 square foot IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, Florida.
