Bart,

Spinning rods will usually have much bigger and taller guides as the spinners' spools are at quite a distance away from the reel seats when compared to a casting reel.

Additionally, a casting rod usually have a "trigger" like protrusion so as to enable the rod/reel combo to be held in place without toppling over due to the "top-heavy" characteristic of the casting set up.

And BTW, the spinfisher or most of the SS series reels by PENN are quite robust BUT heavy. Pranab, should be able to give you some comments as he is having a 950SS.
