Bart,

Regarding difference between casting and spinning rods, Abdul has already made a few points and Dylan has proven himself an avid student . I will just add a few more. You will notice the number of guides on a conventional, aka casting rod is always more than an equivalent spinning one. For example, consider the Penn rods I was telling you about in the last mail: The spinning version will have 5 to 7 line guides, whereas the casting version I have has 8 or 9. Ever wonder why? The very simple reason is on a conventional, the line travels above the blank; when the blank is bent downwards when you have a fish on or when casting, the line will come into contact with the blank and cause friction leading to both the line and the blank getting abraded. This is the only reason why more line guides are found on casting rods; however it also depends on the blank's action. Fast tapers need more guides, while the slow tapers of conventional trolling rods need only 4 - 6 guides as the rod never bends enough.

Thanks,
Ijlal
