The rooster fishing has been awesome these past few months. We have been catching a bunch of 50 lb + fish, on live bait. The rooster are eating these bait up like candy. Double and triple headers are not uncommon. We have also been catching lots of dorado up to 15 lbs, along with football sized yellowfin inshore. Sailfish have also been caught every now and then inshore. The seas have been very flat since the end of August. Last week I fished half day on the Super Fly and released three roosters, one weighing around 40 lbs. We had another break the line on a 15 lb spinning rod. And we had about 5 or 6 other rooster fish bites. They people I fished with were not used to fishing with circle hooks. One of the rooster took to the air as soon as it ate one of the baits. I fished a half day inshore yesterday out of the Marina Puesta del Sol Resort in northern Nicaragua. We released 5 rooster fish in the 5 to 10 lb range, about 20 jack crevalle up to 17 lbs, and 8 sierra mackeral. The biggest mackeral was 12 lbs, which is big as far as macks go. The rooster fish and mackeral were all caught trolling. Most of the jacks were caught on 15 lb test spinning rods using poppers. It was great action watching the jacks fight over the poppers. Sometimes even the rooster fish are easy to catch on poppers when they ball up bait as the jacks did. |
