FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 7, 2002

JUNIOR ANGLER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP UNDERWAY

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has announced the start of its new Junior Angler World Championship Tournament Series. Existing tournaments around the world have been selected as qualifying events, with the junior angler winners invited to compete in the IGFA championship in the summer of 2003 in the Florida Keys.

Currently there are 20 qualifying events in eight countries and territories and more will be added in the coming months. The first qualifying tournament to take place was the Torneo Tropic Star at Pinas Bay, Panama in December.

Mike Leech, president of IGFA, said the purpose of the Junior Angler World Championship is to get youngsters under 17 involved in fishing and keep them interested so they don't get distracted by less desirable activities. Fishing also promotes closer family relationships. The junior championship is the latest addition to the IGFA junior angler program that recognizes separate world records for boys and girls for 120 fresh and saltwater fish. IGFA has members of the Junior Angler Club in approximately 50 countries.

Tournament directors of junior tournaments or adult tournaments with junior divisions are encouraged to contact Chelsea Krezmien, Junior Angler Coordinator at (954) 924-4247 or ckrezmien@igfa.org for complete details on how to become a qualifying tournament for the junior championship. Parents who fish in tournaments with junior divisions should notify tournament officials of this exciting new opportunity.
