Hi Zahed, You are right about the first being a silver grunt, and the third and fourth are gold-lined sea breams alright. The second one looks like a 'picnic sea bream' (Shaam in Arabic) to me. Nice catch anyhow. What is you mobile number? Since we both live in Abu Dhabi, it would be nice to be able to communicate sometimes. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi M Zahyed , The first two are silver grunter . I think the bottom two are gabbath . I will leave it to our friend keyur to give a comment as my exp with fishes is only 3 months . He is the best guy to let us know if i am correct or not . The silver grunt have more tasty flesh than gabbath . Silver grunt can be grilled and baked . But gabbath should be prepared with a jucy content as the flesh tend to be soft and dry . regards |

HI Pranab, the last pic, is a tripod fish...very common at Maktoum, especially if you cast in the direction of creek park steps. Will call you later, as I got some good prices for light Michelle rods on sale. They also had Penn Special Senator trolling rods (40-60lbs) at a discounted price. Most probably will pick up the 2 pc graphite rod as it was very cheap. |

Dear Amir , Let me tell you i was watching cast the line at alsheef . And i am impressed by your distance . Being a newcomer you are really doing well as most of the time you crossed the rock clearance there . Just keep it up , your are improving nicely . Yes you are correct bigger fishes are away in the deep . But still decent size koffer ,nagroor and gabbath are avail able still . Check the pics i posted from the last whole weeks catch . Specially the nagroor size are quite bit in and about 2 to 2 1/2 kgs . regards |

hi guys , this is for ronald and amir . Dear ronanald and amir , All the above posted pics tody are on .30 line michelle 13 feet rod and all the hook size is no 6 except the black shyam which is hooked on hook size no 3 . For the creek when ever i try for gabbath i put smaller hooks up and for shyam a big hook at the end followed with a stone about half feet below .This trick was shown to me by keyur and it really works if there is sea week or grass then the bait wont fall off . regards |

Hi Everybody, Shahzad and I went to Fujairah on Friday afternoon. We reached Kalba a little before sunset. The Khor looked like a wonderful place to fish but unfortunately, there was a board prohibiting fishing. We then moved in the direction of Fujairah and though the beach at Kalba looked very promising, there were no anglers so we became wary and decided to move on. Furthermore, many people were bathing on Kalba's beaches, so we decided to look for a more secluded place. We found the place Pranab had advised earlier, after the Fujairah refinery, and decided to spend the night there. First rod was in water around 2015 hrs and during the initial phase of the receding tide, we managed to land five Dory Snapper of the biggest size we have ever seen; the fish ranged between 350 - 500 grams each except for one that was quite small and was safely released by us. We waited till we had a morning high tide, but did not get any worthwhile bites. Maybe it is the season, as the place looked to be much more promising. All in all, it was a nice experience, and as one old friend says: "Fishing is fun, fish bonus!" Cheers! |

Hi Pranab, I went to Mamzar park @ 5 in the evening with my guest for an hour or so. Did manage to catch one fish small about the size of your palm (I think it was a sea bream so someting like that), picture not worthwhile posting. I guess all the bigger fishes ranaway as there were people who were jet skiing there. |

hi all, i agree with fishpals.a spellcheck is something we just cannot do without. as for boat fishing in abu dhabi,it would certainly not be worthwhile until the end of the summer. until then,i suggest we post pictures and reports of past experiences to keep each other entertained. thanks |

Dear udupa , For your kind reference i am not from oxford . I am from a village school and belong to a poor family who could not afford better education . So you have to bear with my poor grammer . But i am sure with passage of time i will pick up better grammer while i bask the glory of the fortunate educated class in uae . But then it would not leave you any room to point out mistakes in my linguistic ability . But thanks once again for taking your time out in fine tuning my english skills . As i did in case of angler 13 he he i will take up this opportunity to buy a Ren and Martin and brush up a little . Any way i will keep your sugession in mind before i post something next time . As you all know i am a difficult fish to fish for he he , keep your lines tight other wise the bait will be disappear . By the way udupa can you organise a fishing boat trip in abudhabi if its worth wile now . You know the situations better than me . So would appreciate some fishing efforts from you . regards |

Dear Pranab, Had you said so in one of your posts, the misunderstanding might not have arisen. Anyhow, it was nice talking to you on the phone. I wish I could have joined you on your Musandam trip but my passport is expiring very soon and I must apply for a renewal in the coming week, so maybe next time. Shahzad's family is leaving for vacation tonight, so we may not be able to join you at RAK. We are planning to leave tomorrow afternoon, but thanks a lot for the offer buddy. Hope to see some nice pics of yourself with some monsters! Take care, Syed |

hi jess my beloved friend , I got your point . Point well noted . I understand you being a philipino you cant undrstand local language . Now the point is neither am i a local guy . So the prob is when i go fishing and i catch a shyam a new fish , i just show it to the angler standing beside me who happnes to be arabic . So he tells me the arabic name . Hence i knew this problem and hence if you hv seen in the note under my post that i askd keyurs help to translate the names into english . In fact keyur did that with website address and ijlal also supported by translating all the fish names in english for the convenience of those who dont knw the arabic names . By the way none was malayam names which i mentioned . I would have definately wrote them in english had i my self known the english names . More over my sggesstion to you . You have to learn a few local fish names the reason is when you go to the local fish market to buy bates and if u want to ask the fisherman what bate would hook up silver grunt , he will just look blank towards you . But if you say wht bate is good for nagroor he can immidiately guide you . Did you get the point . I hope i am not disappointing any one over here with this mail . Neither i am tying to be a moderator . I am just trying to sort things out as i am pround that this forum have gone a long way for discussing fishing . And i want to keep it that way . I am here by suggest something to all forum members . I want to organise a gathering either in my house or in chuas house for all the fisherman who are active forum members . We can talk about rod building and appropiate tackle that is relevant to this area . More over it would be a nice occation to meet each other over a weekend . I am sure when we meet each other we will all see every one is nice and helpful and this misconception of some one is bad and some one is better would give away to better ideas and thoughts which would be helpful for fishing . We can play at the gathering new fishing techniques like jigging dvds and can ask experienced guys like chua , kit , jeen to speak about fishing . If every one agrees i think this is the best thing to do in the hot summer when fishes hv ran away far in the deep . Awaiting all your response on the above subject . I can be reached on my cell reachabele always 0506789546 or email pdass06@rediffmail.com . I think for refreshment purpose we can have a token attendence fee of 10 \20 dirhams from every one keen to attend this kind of a gathering . Awaiting response from every one here . And naughty boy jess this if for you also . I love u jess for being so naughty specially with me . But please appreciate others dont undrestand you . Its only alwys me who understand you . I will also try to make a copy of a fishing chart with local and english names which can be distributed to all the attending members . Besides this we can form group from each fishing area to let them report on a regular basis wht are the catch being uplifted from diff areas . regards |

hi ijlal , Well i can suggestyou a few shops which keeps wht u are looking for . For cheaper budget you can go to wan hei fishing tackle shop in dubai china mart . The owners name is Mr lee . All the items are made from china here . You can except a rod within AED 130- 140 for baitcasting . They keep fly rods also . If you want better quality there is a shop on the jumeriah beach road known as al hamour . But the prices here are expensive . It all depends upon budget . Get in touch with chua he will guide you on this issue . He is an expert rod builder . Has been building rods for the last 20 odd years . For me any rod problem i go to chua . For any tackle like rapala , soft plastics hook issues i go to kit . Unfortunately kit is out of country right now . But i think to build a standard rod it will take you a budget of around 700 to 800 dirhams . And i will sggest you to build the rod with some expertise from chua . Because you might say u can buy them off the shelf . But with my practicle experience i have seen the off the rack rod qualty in dubai is pretty poor . Most of them dont hv good alingment neighter do they have quality guides . Hence apparntly it might seem that 800/900 dirhams is costly but in the long run its cheaper . For example i bought a michelle which is by no way a bad rod manufacturer and i dished out around 475 dirhams . Appratently seems cheap . But then twice the guides gave me problem . And had not chua been around it would hv been very disappointing . So why take the trouble . Build your own rod which will last a life time then spend behind cheap rods. I have seen my self kit orderd something from states . And on the firt throw it snapped . I am talkingabout baitcasting rod . So not necessarily rods imported from usa are good . So just thik about it . If you are consedering to build a rod i can ask my friend chua to help u out . regards |

Hi, i fully agree with Iftikhar shb, In the accounting field there is a phrase " Substance over form". I think we need to understand the underlying information that is being presented in the posts in this forum. What i mean is that we should not get in to other aspects such as english, urdu, arabic or using caps letters etc etc while writing a post . I think, we all should encourage the forum participants to contribute with constructive messages. I would suggest, if there is some thing written in the forum which is not required then no body should reply to that particular post. |

Dear Pranab, Good to know you are aware of the difference between baitcasting and spinning rods. I only advised considering most people over here, even most of the shopkeepers do not know any such category even exists! You know what, you are doing the correct thing in converting a spinning rod into a casting one. I even considered doing so a few weeks ago for myself but could not find any line guides for the purpose; the only guides available here are for the silly telescopic rods. If proper guides are available in Dubai, do let me know. I guess the shop you have mentioned is Al-Masaood Marine on Salam Street. I went there a couple of weeks ago and found they were carrying not much of anything. I have never seen a conventional Surf casting rod with them. I do have a conventional baitcasting outfit, but that is meant for the boat and can also be used for trolling. Currently I am looking for a surf rod to go with my Daiwa LD50H reel but am on a low budget so have not ordered any from the US yet. My buddy Shahzad has a pretty decent TICA rod and two reels, a Daiwa Sealine-X and an ABU Ambassadeur. By the way, you never responded to the Fujairah affair - waiting for your reply on that. Have a nice weekend! Syed (Ijlal) |

Hello Keyur, Thanks for the response. I do not consider myself an expert on anything even though I started my fishing about 35 years ago; however, I did pick up a thing or two along the way. For now, I can select matching rods and reels and terminal tackle for myself, and infact feel a little pride in doing so, but I am sure I can benefit from the expertise of Chua and Kit and all others in one way or the other. To me, life is a school we graduate from only when we die. Have a nice weekend! Syed |

Hi Ronald, Thank you for your compliments on the my writing style. I only try to ensure I write with sincerity and of what I have experience of. As for atta, I used to make balls a little smaller than ping pong and boil them for a few minutes when I went for freshwater fishing back home. This resulted is the dough becoming firm and sticky. I have not tried that here, as I cannot get myself up to using dough in saltwater. Thanks and best regards, Syed |

Dear tarek , Barracuda can be caught on bait as well as on rapalas . Bait is uma . For rapala i suggest you go for yuzuri rapalas . The best colour would be blue , orange , green and silver . Go for shiny ones . regards |

Dear ijlal , I think in abudhabi these kind of rod is available in massod john brown shop sports departemnt which is on salam street . For your information they got 500 rods on dubai boat show and they are on sale in abudhabi . They are the official reps for penn international and you can get some good stuff there . Now coming to bait casting rods and spinning rod . yes i knw the difference . the guides on a bait casting rods are also smaller . But here is the catch . I wanted to import one from abroad which is of good quality . But for the time being i have my best friend chua . He is one of the best rodd builder around in this part of the world . And i will strip off the guides from my spinning out fit and load it with new fuji guides and change the set up to a temp bait casting outfit . It will be my practicle experience for me about rod building . So when i get the original baitcaster i can try that . And yes i take ur sugession i wont sell off the penn 950 SS . Even kit was intersted in that out fit . By the way do u have a bait casting outfit . Have a look at ISHIDI DAIWA . Its one of those sexy one around , hope u like it . regarrds |

HI Syed, there are quite a few distinctions between rods. Some may not even realise that there are spinning rods, casting rods, surf casting, trolling rods, reef rods etc etc & etc. Most rods have to be balanced with a reel that suits it. Our experts here are Chua (champion rod maker)& Kit (away on vacation) Sorry, but my knowledge is limited to basic rods (types of rods)but I am definately NO expert when it comes to balancing. Jam, there are quite a few shops in Deira & you are likely to get a good variety of stuff there. Kit again would be an expert with Lures & plugs.(He does not do bait fishing)He is one chap who will not hold back when it comes to sharing knowledge. Hopefully he will be able to answer your questions. Ronald, there are different ways to prepare dough for fishing. I'm too lazy to type right now, will tell you when I talk to you. I also use some ghee & other ingredients & prepare it overnight to get it firm...will explain how sometime later.....however, I have only used this for fresh water fishing & not in the sea. |

greetings from garhoud thanks pranab for the offer to show me around. unfortunately I am in work 6 days a week so would only really be able to go fishing on friday or saturday afternoon (I finish at 2) as the traffic is horrendous in the evenings from what I have seen and would rule out going anywhere then I guess? I've made a note of your mobile number and will give you a call to discuss. I have a friend in work from Goa who would also be interested in fishing so perhaps we can arrange a meet somewhere. A couple of questions though, what sort of species are available this time of year? I have brought a selection of spinners and plugs with me but I see people are talking about bait fishing on here so I think I'll need to get some hooks. Where is the nearest tackle shop to the airport? Thanks and tight lines and bent rods to all Jam |

Hi Syed, I appreciate the way you write. Even Keyur and others have a decent way of writing without hurting anyone. Keep it up. Amir - Regarding making Atta (atta is Hindi word for dough) Add water (little at a time) to wheat flour and knead till it becomes a ball. Don’t add too much water otherwise it will be too soft, try to keep it little hard, so that it will hold the hook. Some people add or store it in little oil mixed in water, to avoid slipping out the hook very easily. As Shahzad said we could also add garlic water to atta – has anyone tried it recently? Some even add maida flour. There are different recipe and secrets. I came across a better idea – instead of getting into all this mess of making atta, you could simply go to “ Kaboos” shop (shop which makes roti…) and ask for some atta. Please – if someone knows a better way or secret ingredients to mix in atta– please let us know. Best of Luck, Ronald. |

HI Pranab, This can be used for reference for all fish available here in the UAE. All fish have the 'CORRECT' Engilsh, Arabic & scientific name. Some may disagree, but for me this is the best available list. http://www.uae.gov.ae/uaeagricent/FISHERIES/photo_fish_en.stm I suppose this will help end the confusion about the type of fish caught & rumours about that fish :o) Identify the fish from the picture & click on it....you will get all relevant details of the fish. Just to get you started......there are 12 types of Trevally identified in UAE waters.....now do you know which one you caught? lol |

Hey Pranab, I was going through some of the older threads, and though I did not have time to read your lo..................ng posts on conventional reels and braking systems, I ask you this: Do you have a conventional surf rod to go with a conventional rod? There is some difference b/w spinning rods and ones made for baitcasters, and the most important one is the number of guides. A baitcaster will have a minimum of 9-10 line guides to keep the line touching the rod. I searched all shops in Abu Dhabi and most shops in Dubai but could not find one. The only shop that sells these types of rods is Barracuda in Abu Dhabi (not the same as Barracuda Dubai) but casting rods can be expensive starting from around AED 500 and going up to a few thousands. To cut short, you cannot use a conventional baitcasting reel on any of your current rods. By the way, have you sold your 950SS? Even though I would love to buy it, I would most sincerely suggest you keep the reel with you and take good care of it; it will last you a lifetime! Cheers! |

Hi Everybody, It’s nice to see new comers on this forum. Hi Syed- Thanks for your information on fish names in A/E. These days I see some of the guys come out with wonderful information’s – Thanks. Re: Fujarah- we started going to this place after watching bull fights, and started to like this place, which is quite and peaceful. I usually go to this place during Eid holidays. We go to Kalba and stay overnight at Breeze Motel, which is right at the end. We can even camp at this place. Contact no. for Breeze motel is 00971-9-2777113. After the round about from Breeze motel on your left there’s a bridge going to this place, which has mangroves all over, and there’s plenty of fish, and we can even see Hamour from the bridge. The problem is we see small sized fishes in front of us but they don’t bite our bait. May be they need very small hooks, or different bait, or may be they are full… Now this time I will try various techniques (thanks to our forum) and hope to get something. Good Luck, Ronald. |

Dear Pranab, Thank you for a detailed description of where to fish at Fujairah. Although, I have never been to Fujairah before, I was able to at least identify the general location; if you open www.wikimapia.org and move from the refinery in the direction of Khor Fakkan, will see a place marked as 'Fishing spot', which has been entered by me. Please take a look when you have time and advise if I have marked the correct place. Shahzad, who has joined the forum yesterday, and I are the only regular team we have. Both of us are die hard anglers and spend each and every weekend together, whether we get any fish or not. It would be a pleasure to join your friend's team at Fujairah and you are most welcome to join us if this can be coordinated. We plan going there this Friday afternoon, spend the whole night on the beach and return Saturday morning once the sun becomes unbearable. We shall wait for your confirmation before finalizing our plan. Have a great day! Ijlal |

hi shaz , Nice to see new guys joining the forum . I could not be more happier to see this happen . Because i tried for this so hard . When i joined this form about 4 / 5 months back it was almost dying . And i was the only guy writing tht time if u check the archives . But i am happy today my efforts have paid off . Any way coming to silver grunts . For the time being in hot summer its only the following fishes found in the creek . FISH KIND BAITS TIDE TIME 1 Silver grunts RUMALI ROTI UPTIDE (Nagroor ) FLOUR DOUGH DOWN TIDE SHRIMP/ CHIKEN 2. ( koffer ) SHRIMP UPTIDE 3. ( Shyam ) CRAB UPTIDE 4. ( Gabbath ) SHRIMP UPTIDE/DOWNTIDE 5 MILK FISH SLICED BREAD But of course the maximum is the avaliability of nagroor or silver grunts . But once the water gets stagnant its difficult to get nagnoor bites . So advisble to throw deep into the channel to get them . I am still confused about the night and day timings . Because really i caught always in the night time . But its also there i happen to meet so many fisher men on the surf and all of them do say that its a day fish and mostly when the sun is scorching . Even my best frind chua told me repetedly that it can be only caught at day break and early morning hours from 6- 11 . HEY KEYUR IF YOU KNOW THE NAME OF THE FISHES IN ENGLISH PLS HELP ME . I KNOW NOW THE NAMES IN ARABIC YET TO MASTER THE ENGLISH NAMES regards |

hi ijlal , I have never been in ghantoot . The reason being when they give lisence they told us its a protected place and you can be fined heavily if caught fishing there . This are is under fish conservation study by municiapility . As far as fujairh is concerned the road between fuj port and mabdha its an area u will see mountains at your back side and ocean in the front . To be more precise its the area after the fuj port where the fuj freezone ends and the big petrolium refinary start . You can see a service lane which runs along with the main road going for the next populated place madah . You can see fisher man boats and net all along the coast and baboo shades . This is the area where you should go for fishing . You can expect bigger varities of fish all along the coast . Beside this area you can also go to kalba which is not far away but about 30 mins drive from the fuj port to the right side from the fuj beach motel round about . Kalba is more rich as far as fishing is concerned . There are a lot of piers all along kalba from where you can fish bigger varities . Hope this helps you . Let me know when you are going there as i got a fishign friend there in fuj . May be i try to connect them and your team which will be of help for you . regards |

Hi everyone. Just to share my experiences with catching milkfish here in the Philippines. Milkfish (Chanos chanos, Forsskal http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/mlrd001w.jpg), or Bangus as it is locally called over here is popular table fare, the best parts being the belly and the head. Flyfishing hasn't caught on with local anglers so I couldn't give you much info regarding that. The really large adult milkfish (more than 60cm length), or what is locally called as Sabalo, are illegal to catch over here and you risk huge fines and even a jail term if caught possessing one (see http://www.bfar.da.gov.ph/legislation/fao/fao129.htm). What anglers do over here is use a bobber or float ringed with 3 or more small hooks, usually #10 or #12 beakhooks on very short leaders, 2-3 inches long using 12-15lb test mono. Some really hardheaded anglers I'v seen solder these hooks together making miniature treble hooks to better hold the bait in place. Usual bait is bread dough (baked or stale bread breaks up when wet), sticky rice flour dough, or cornmeal (masa, the type used for tortillas). Strikes are usually explosive and I have witnessed quite a few reels come apart while fighting this fish. Usual shoreline catch along Manila bay is anywhere from 6 in. to a foot and a half. Best time is after a really big typhoon when the commercial fishpens break Juvenile milkfish usually those 6in. length are a popular bait for sailfish & marlin by the open water anglers. Hope this helps. Regards. |

Hi Pranab, Thanks for your detailed reply. I remember you wrote somewhere you knew places where they never check. Is Ghantoot Beach on of those places? We have been there 3-4 times and nobody checked, until last time we saw board on the other side saying fishing was prohibited; thereafter, we stopped going there. How good are these AED 500 per 3 hrs boats? We have our own trolling rods and if these people know where to find fish, four of us can possibly share and take a trip.... just thinking, what do you say? |
