Hi All,

Make sure you guys use the info provided by PRANAB. It will be of great help for applying for a new license. Also people who are getting blank pages make sure you dont use any other proxy other than the proxy1.emirates.net.ae. This should solve your bank page issues.

I haven't got mine though I have all the docs ready but not able to find time to upload them :-)

Hey there Pranab. How are you ? Literally nothing at all. I did not use any bait at all. I was just trying the lures and practising casting techniques... twist the wrist kinda stuff. With refernce to your question on lures ... give me until the end on play today and i'll have some info for you. At home now, leaving now.

By the way,I'm off fishing with a guy who's offering to take me out to sea. I found him on souq.com. If anybody is interested, let me know. Leaving friday afternoon at 2pm. The charge is about aed200.

Let me know if anybody is seriusly interested. If this guy is any good, i'd like to use him regularly.

Pranab, you wanna join ?

Dear Dave ,

Thanks for the offer . But as i told you i know going to the sea costs . And at present i returned form a 40 days holiday . I am totally busted right this moment . Let me save a little when i can at least share the disel price with you for the trip for sure i will go with you . And many thanks for your tips . May be my questions to lot of experienced guys seems foolish . But to me WE STOP GROWING WHEN WE STOP LEARNING . Hence i will be thankful to all those who like you will come up with the small tips which they gathered over the years . I belive there is no substitute for these tips .

By the way dave i have heard that action of the lure is a important thing . Guess i have to master those even after i buy some good lures and hence i must accompany experienced guys like you to learn the art . I am still a newbie after 1 and a half years of fishing .

Thanking you in advance .

regards

By the way i do refer to fishbase.org and had a clue that others might also be referring to it, so i believe i am waking the same path as you did some years ago :-) but i do agree with experience part and may be one fine day i will be able to reply to others post the way you do. I just on the verge of getting m fishing license as in got all my docs ready waiting to scan them and upload them. I think we all should meet one day all together just to introduce ourselves physically. not on professionals grounds though. Just out of curiosity are you a local ijlal?

Hi Guys,

Uploaded photos of sailfish and small dorado caught in fujairah this weekend to the gallery on our website www.smokingreels.piczo.com Pranab, there are some many lures you could use. For kingfish, barracuda, queenfish you can use rapalas or storm lures (red and white is a good colour) 18 cms size. use the deep diving type.

For dorado, tuna, sailfish you will need to use surface lures combined with dead ballyhoo. This works well when combined with teasers. Although if you are on the fish then nothing can beat live baiting.

I often go out on the boat on my own during the week so if you have time then you could join me.

Tight lines

Dave

The Jarbua Terapon do NOT make good table fish. yes you can eat it if you want. (people can eat what ever they want). The flesh is quite hard, harder than the queen fish (if people have tasted queen fish) & it has no flavour. Not worth keeping them for the pot. A quick release would make more sense. Just my 2 cents.

hi guys ,

Can any one give me some tips about lure fishing . I have not caught anything beside barracda on lures .

I really want to learn it seriously . Let me know the lures that i should go for the following variety .

1) QUEEN FISH
2) JACKS
3) GT
4) SHERI
5) STINGRAY
6) SEA BREAM
7) SILVER GRUNT
8) MILKFISH
9) CAT FISH
10)TUNA
11)LEATHER JACKET
12)KING FISH

I really dont know if the above varities can be caght on a lure . Please mention the size weight and colour which every variety if possible and also the brand of the lure .

May be some of my question are a bit stupid but til now all the above mentioned fish i have caugh on shrimp , squid or uma . I had been fishing for only 1 and a half year so i thought its time that i take some serious tips from the experienced fisherman of this forum .

Would be grateful if some one frm them come out with some suggestive tips without raking a controversy he he .

dear ijlal ,

As i dont have a boat so i never think of a fishfinder for a boat . Another reality is i dont have the deep pockets to venture in the sea every week end . When i do that its occational . And if i want to do a serious fishing trip then i think i can go for a fishing boat with a fishfinder . Why then buy it .

To answer your last question . One of my fishing friend told fishing is like golf . So you have to keep spending on it .

So if fish finder comes for 400-650 dirhams i think if not me but many others here can afford it. What make u think i have gone for fishfinder . Really i dont have a fish finder . But i do think a cheap fishfinder who can afford is worth . And the link which i gave are all the ones which can be used as a entry level on land and for kayak goers . I am not suggesting it for serious boat owners . Thats what i pointed out in my last post . Hope now things are clear . Any way where have u been fishing on boat lately . Did you go to dibba again . Or planning to do so again .

regards

Pranab

Desmond,

To answer your question about fish names, please be advised nobody can know everything so I do consult www.fishbase.org and other Web resources when required; however, a little prior knowledge is required to research effectively. You can call it a combination of experience, passion for the sport, reading and Web resources.

Cheers,

Hi! Ijlal,

Thanks for reply.

The one I caught was about 8-9 inch and would weight about 200-300g. As big as sultan ibrahim sold in the market. I released it thinking that it may not be good for table. More over it has very tiny but very thick scaled skin. We normally keep the surf perches of this size, for the table.

Cheers, Biju

Hi Casper,

I agree with Ijal. A fish finder is something that comes in useful on a boat. If you fish from shore I think your money would be better spent investing in other stuff, like rods or reels. Shore fishing deals mostly with shallow water, specially in Dubai, so you can get a rough idea of the shape of the sea bed and the spots fish are likely to accumulate. Plus u can always jump in and check it out!

Anyway if you decide to get a fish finder, let me know if it proves useful for shore fishing!

Thanks!

May I ask how you know all these names? Do you refer to any database as such or is it all out of your experience. This fish I caught mostly in Umm Al Quain

Hi Casper
Picnico on the Jumeirah Beach Road (it's nearish to Mercato, in an EPPCO petrol station), sells Wilderness System Kayaks. They keep selling out though as they are very much in demand - next batch due this month or Jan. These are the best kayaks currently available for fishing in Dubai.
Here is their website:
http://www.wildernesssystems.com/
They are priced from 2200 - 4000 dirhams. The Tarpon 120 costs about 3600, and is a good all rounder. You can modify a milk crate and attach pvc tubing (as rod holders) with zip ties rather than drilling the hull for rod holders. I can show you pics of mine if you like.
It's a lot of fun fishing from a kayak, but of course not for everyone!

Pranab,

Wireless fish finders are rod-mountable because they are not connected to the transducer through a cable; rather, they communicate with a wireless transducer, which is still fitted to the hull or transom... and what makes you think you can use fish finders on land???

Cheers!

hi casper ,

http://www.humminbird.com/productLines_wide.asp?id=610

visit this site and you can get some india about wire less fishfinders . It need not be fixed because it has wire less technology . But ijlal is right for serious fishfinders most of them are fixed on the boat . But those models are expensive ones . The one which i am talking ranges frm AED 750 to AED 1500 .

I have seen these models and i find them quite handly . I dont hv so much money to invest in serious fish finders he he .

Hey Casper,

Fish finders are not like GPS devices that track satelites to show ones position on earth. Fish finders require a transducer, a device that pings the bottom and receives echos, to be fitted accurately to the hull or transom depending on its type. Unless you own a boat, it is not really advisable to buy one.

Just my two cents... maybe guys like Dave and Bart who own boats will be able to clarify better.

Thanks,
Ijlal

dear casper ,

The best place to go for fish finders are agricultural resource its a shop on the deira sidde before fire station Humming bird and i think gramin are the two establised brand .

Humming bird has one on the rod model as well as like a watch , Which you can use on land as well on boat . Black and white models are cheaper .

Al fazar marine also got same stuff and so does sea star . There is also another out let inside garhoud free zone . Where you can different fish finders at reasonable rates .

Boats along with fish finders will be more expensive . I let you knw the development over mail.

Hey Pranab . How short is short ? 4 to 6 hours maybe ... hehehe ... 6 hours would be quite good if we have a fish finder on board the boat. Would you know if they have a fish finder. I was thinking of buying one .. any ideas guys ?

Hi casper ,

Your can buy kayak for decent price at Knautica its a mall on the sheik zayed road . Prices ranges from 2200 up to 7000 dirhams . Prices depends on capacity .

Yes you can join lobo and me on the weekend . I normally go fishing morning every alternative day frm 6.45 till 7.30 . Friday and sat i go both days . But i do hv office on saturday .

Yes i knw this year fishes are less and quite unpredictable as they are . Yesterday night i promised a car mechanic i would give him two barracudas who fixed my car stereo and did not charge me . But i did not get a single fish in 30 mins . But this time of year frm my exp fishes should be there . Any way i am very impatient about waiting keyur and chua knows that . I will change places within 40 mins if nothing is hitting . By the way one of my friends wanted to have a fishing trip . I wont be going because i am a broke after returning frm vacation . But i would like to organise it for others . So any one intersted please let me know .

regards

Hi Pranab,

Looks like you are quite next to jumeriah beach? I was in Umm Al Quain for a fishing and spent almost whole morning and managed to bag a inch long sheri (not too sure if it was a sheri). Is I can bag two fish in 2 hours nothing like it :-) Are you working on saturdays?

A very disappointing early morning session at the marina again today.
2 and a half hours trolling on the kayak and not a single hit on lures that are tried and tested. Good workout though!! ;-)
Shore bound friend tried livebaiting and baitfished with the same results - zero!

Hi Dave,

Congratulations on a great catch! Dorado is one of my favourite fish. Do you keep your fish or release them? How long do you think the YFT's will stay? I would certainly love to accompany you on one of the trips; however, I will be leaving for vacation on December 20 and will be back on January 12, so would only be able to join you after I come back.

Do post some pics of your catches, and don't worry about boasting or otherwise; our sport does require a little healthy boasting. Without it there would be no such forums. Do you think people have enough time to contribute to forums just for the sake of teaching others what they know? No way! Forums do actually fulfill a basic human need of being recognized. One basically writes to be recognized, and sharing your joy - call it boasting, does help in that. It only becomes boasting when your purpose is to belittle others. Of course, if you have been fishing these waters for twenty years, who can challenge your experience, and if you have to state that fact, it should not be taken as bragging. I love to see others' reports just as I love to post mine, so keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Ijlal

Hi Joerg.

I assume you were talking to me with your last post, I suggest you get your facts right before accusing people. i am certainly not a "boaster" I am simply updating fellow anglers with information. I have fished here for over 20 years and take a few people out fishing now and then to pay for repairs, fuel for the boat. I joined this site a couple of years back, when we used to exchange knowledge not insults. It seems all people want to do here is have a go at each other. I regularly take people out on my boat so they can experience the fun that we have. Fishing is my passion so stop moaning and get fishing!! As for your language here's one in mine, grow up!!

Went out today after sailfish but no luck, although we spotted a few. The Yellow fin tuna are now in so lets hope we hook one up soon. Out again tomorrow so will update then. For those with a boat, the sailfish are near the VOPAK platform.

Tight lines Dave

Great catch Casper, congratulations, would love to see the photos. My e-mail address is on my profile (as you know!!).
I was down in S. Africa (Cape Town/Durban/Sodwana) this summer for a shark diving holiday - Great Whites, Tigers, Oceanic Black Tips and Sand Tigers. Big seas, big fish and big currents. Amazing and awe-inspiring!!
Have to go back down and go fishing for game fish there, it's awesome!
Anyway, hope you can catch the same here!!
Best
Richie
PS Lots of big GTs, barracuda and kingfish in Dibba the weekend before last - though this was what I saw diving at Dibba Rock - not fishing!! As many of the posters have noted (Cornel/Ijlal) recently, even boat fishing in Dubai is very slim pickings. This summer I dived the Zainab wreck, 30 kms out(of Dubai)into the Gulf in 30 metres of water - amazing - almost fishless!! Where are the fish!? Wrecks are usually FULL of fish!!!Answers on a postcard please!! As Ijlal has noted, the only place that seems to have consistently good fishing is Dibba. Please, somebody prove me wrong and tell me some good news about Dubai!! :-)

Hello Casper,

WOW man, a 79 kg YFT! Must have been some fight! Congratulations! Where are the pics? My email address is ijlal2@yahoo.com and is also given in my profile.

There are no good places in or around AUH, as far as I know; there used to be one which would have produced big kings and cudas but unfortunately, it is now closed due to construction. Looking at the shore scene over here, I haven't had the courage to spend huge amounts on a boat trip here. I only go out of Dibba, where you can find some excellent fish.

Cheers,
Ijlal

Dear ijlal ,

As i wrote i just went one day after i arrived in dubai and was extremly disappointed . When i saw ur post frm india about the kind i thought dubai fishing must be going great guns . But when i arrived here and tried one day it was really frustrating . Only some small fish around .

What is the senerio in abudhabi . Might come one day there if its a better activity .

I did not get even a decent size welcome fish for me he he . It seems we have to spend the season with the pic of the king . I have an arab friend who has a boat who went recently out at sea only to return with 10 kgs fish after 6 hours . What i cant understand ijlal its quite cold and what made the fish to run away .

Possibility are two . Either i have to change the tech to catch them . Or the enviormental changes driving them to new habitats . I wish the first one is the cause . Any way nice to hear from you .

Just went once fishing after one and a half months holiday on the national holiday . Three of us frm morning 9 o clock till 1 in the afternoon we had been marina different parts to makhtoum . Very very poor response . Only 5 fishes that too nothing special . Sheri at the creek are so small u dont like throwing the line . Totally boring holiday . It seems except barracuda , queen fish and small sheris nothing in water . Suprising no sign of cats at makhtoum , for which it was famous earlier .

I think too much construction around dubai taking its toll . Belive me i hooked 3 stones in makhtoum . Thats the scenerio .

Hi Richie,

Yeah i remember it, caused a riot with the beach goers!!
Well its seemed to have spooked the fish in that area, as for finding a tidy spot without snorklers and spearguns, its tough at the moment.
Any new good spots around Dubai would be welcome.....any suggestions???? anyone?????

Hi Tim
Rumour has it the big development on Jumeirah Beach that was planned earlier this year (remember the boards closing off the beach?) is going ahead in some shape or form. There is a dredger there right in front of the breakwater to the right of Burj Al Arab. In fact, there's so much development going on that the number of places to fish in Dubai is getting very limited, apart from the Creek. I thought I'd found a quiet 'undiscovered' spot to the left of Al Qasr to fish last week in the evening...then four guys turned up with handlines right next to me....then half an hour later 10 guys with poles...then 6 more with lights and spearguns!! This in a spot of just 100 yards!!

They seem to be constructing rock armour reefs...i know its scared off the fish in that area, used to be good for catfish off the breakwater....not anymore!!!!...answers on a post card please.

Nice idea with casting out potatoes Ronald. I think I'll cast out a whole sack, and include a knife and a frying pan - perhaps the fish could oblige by filleting themselves and chopping up the potatoes for me, then frying the lot!
Well, jokes aside, fishing seems to have been very poor recently in Dubai. The arrival of small queens and barracuda in early October seemed promising, and I had mornings with up to 20 queens and barracuda (all small though), but recently it's been very poor.
Went out on the kayaks near the Marina early morning a few weeks ago with a fellow forum member (Carl), and just had a small kingfish and orange spot trevally between us.
Spinning near the Marina has produced blanks a couple of times. I baitfished squid the other evening for a couple of hours and had a 2 kilo catfish near the Palm, but very slow.
Some nice catches from Abu Dhabi, Dibba and Florida (!) - well done - but any good news from Dubai?

What about to buy a fish in the supermarkt and use this as a sinker?

Or you can snorkel down and hold your hook under the waterline.

Dear All,

Its nice to know so many of them sharing their ideas. Thanks to you all.

About sinkers and hooks , I too lost many. Of course as Fishing King & Ijlal said, Luck and perseverance is important, rest all depends on practice.

The other day I read somewhere that you can also use small stone with weak string tied at the end, so that when your line get stuck - you just yank and off it goes easily.
I was wondering if we can use some cheap vegetables / fruits eg. small potatoes, apple pieces, etc. etc. instead of sinkers...ha ha.
Sometimes funny ideas do work.

All the Best.

Ronald.
