COBIAS, SPANISH, BLUES! The water has warmed up & the fishing has TURNED ON on the Outer Banks! We have started to see a lot of Cobia from the beach out to 100 feet of water. Live bait & jigs did the trick! On the full day trips we have been fishing for Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish for the first few hours & then looking for cobias for the rest of the day. The offshore fishing is great as well with catches of Yellowfin & Big Eye Tuna as well as a lot of Dolphin. Take a look at the catch at www.seaductioncharters.com. Give us a call or drop us a line at info@seaductioncharters.com Come on & catch some fish with us! Capt Jay Roberson |

Well, we ran up the beach in about 40 feet of water, a water temp of 41 degrees, a light NW wind & spotted some birds. Of course we set out & hooked 3 rods up at once...this time it was not the usual stripers, but some big bluefish & we caught about 8 of those. Ran up the beach about another 6 miles, set back out in the birds again...& well, the picture speaks for itself. We caught fish for about 3 hours - both casting & trolling - ended up with 2 CITATIONS this trip! Still have some days open for February...do give us a call at 252-473-1281 or 252-423-0129. Subject: Notes from Feb 5th
Folks, time is running for catching those stripers! We had a one person party on the 5th & he spent the morning with us casting for stripers in the birds. Mr. M. was fishing with light tackle & had a fish on most casts. When he brought a fish to the boat...there would be 3 or 4 MORE FISH FOLLOWING the one that was hooked. The fish caught were in the 12-30lb. range. The other scenery was good too as we saw hundreds of birds & a few whales. We still have some open dates but like I said...TIME IS RUNNING OUT! Give us a call at 252-473-1281 or 252-423-0129 or e-mail me to book a trip before you are saying "I wish I would have..." The stripers are hitting both to the north & the south of Oregon Inlet. We had the Sloan party today & had to run down the beach int he fog before we found them in 60 feet of water off Avon. The water temp was 39degrees & that's as cold as it has been this year! BRRRR!! We fished for a short time & then a boat just outside of us hooked up...then we hooked up...5 fish!! The birds started hitting the water & for a time we did great - ended up with 22 fish up to 30lbs. Time to head back to the dock with our catch of the day. Call to book a trip at 252-473-1281 or 252-423-0129. Capt Jay Roberson www.seaductioncharters.com, info@seaductioncharters.com

Subject: January22nd, another great day for stripers!
Yesterday we ran up the beach to where one of my buddies had found a large area of birds hitting the water. When we arrived, 3 boats had fish on. So...we set out our rigs, went a short way & hooked up. The fishing was great all morning! We culled out some of the smaller fish & ended up with a limit of stripers...some as big as 40lbs. Along with having a great day of fishing we had the added bonus of seeing a whale right next to the boat - not an uncommon occurrence this time of year. We also see loons, gannets, and sea ducks...so bring your camera! We have openings for February so give us a call for booking info. Don't wait...this fishing only lasts until March! Oh... & have I said it's been GREAT?! Capt. Jay Roberson info@seaductioncharters.com www.seaductioncharters.com

Subject: Fishing Report for Week of January 19th
The fishing is not going to get much better thatn it is right now! There are big stripers up & down the beach...so...if stripers is what you want....stripers is what we got! We are still averaging about 30-50 fish per trip (way more than the limit so, unfortunately we do have to throw some back). Give us a call as we do have some half & full day trip dates open. Also, don't forget summer is right around the corner (REALLY or is that "REELY"?) & it is not too early to book for those dates now as the best dates are getting booked already. It looks like it is going to be a great season for us. Give us a call at (252)473-1281 or (252)423-0129 to book a trip. Capt. Jay Roberson www.seaductioncharters.com info@seaductioncharters.com

Today we went up the beach to Nags Head & set lines out, but trolled about 20 minutes before we had a bite. We started gettting them good in about 40 -50 feet of water & caught about 30 fish on the afternoon trip. Most of them ran about 20 - 30 lbs. The fishing is as good as it gets RIGHT NOW! & should be great until about March. Subject: BIG STRIPERS!!!
Fishing for striped bass has been terrific(!) with limits of fish being caught most trips. The fish are averaging around 20lbs & some up to 35lbs We have used both trolling methods & eels around Oregon Inlet & the catches have been great using either method! Now that the water has cooled down into the 50's the fishing should be swell from now until March! Give us a call to book a trip at 252-473-1281 or 252-423-0129

Subject: July Fishing out of Pirates Cove
Well, the summer is here & hot water everywhere. Spanish mackerel have been hit or miss. The amberjack fishing has been great but there are lot of boats hitting them. At most places there have been some cobia catches on the beach & in 20 - 130 feet of water...the best bet for catching some would be a full-day intermediate trip. There have also been some red drum caught on the wrecks as well as some triggerfish. The deep water fishing has seen sea bass, tilefish, & some dolphin (mahi-mahi) as well. The school striped bass are still a good hit with 30-50 fish each day on a half-day trip. Some king mackerel are now starting to show up.

NOW is the time to book for those Cobia charters for June & July!

Dec. 15 pm trip "Free Agent" Before we even get started,...the Ken Campbell crew hands down gets the "EXTREME FISHING TEAM" award for the week. When we left the dock it was blowing a solid 25 gusting to above 30 out of the North.Fishing in the shoals was just about impossible ,...especially trying to cast into the wind ,like we needed to.We managed to catch 7 fish casting into the whitewater.I noticed a few birds on the otherside of the shoals and we pounded our way around to them.Once over there I noticed a couple of fish bust.We switched from eel rigs to bucktails and everyone started casting, hooking up instantly. We wound up catching 16 fish like this before it just got so unbearable that we had to give it up.Wound up catching a total of 23 fish in th 14 to 25 pound range under EXTREME conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dec.16 am trip "Free Agent" Off this morning with the Brandon Bailey crew. The Striper fishing this fall has been as good as it gets with the fish hanging right outside the Inlet in the shoals. We started out slow but picked along all morning casting eels in the whitewater.Wound up catching 21 fish in the 15 to 25 pound range.
Dec.17 am trip "Free Agent" Called a couple of my neighbors and said let's go fishing for a while. We idled out the Inlet and fished for about an hour and caught 6 fish in the 12 to 22 pound range.Came home and fired one right on the grill for lunch!!!! It was terrible!!! More photos of other catchs can be viewed at our wesite www.customsoundcharters.com We'll be running trips all winter out of Oregon Inlet or Hatteras. Report: Dec. 12 am trip update "Free Agent" posted by Rick Caton Well the weatherman had his head up his butt once again..."N/E winds at 10 knots"...WRONG....it all worked out but he was wrong. Not many people stirring this morning and you could hear the ocean roaring in the dark around the dock.As it turned out we were the only ones fishing this morning,.....that makes me nervous!!! Off this morning with the Gary Tharrington crew. Got out in the Inlet and it was breaking all the way across!!!.....on high incoming tide.Didn't even think about getting on the outer bar,...which worked out just as well cause they were chewing pretty good in the whitewater up inside the Inlet!!!! Got to where we wanted in the shoals right after daylight,...4 lines out 3 fish on and thats the way it went till the tide slacked and started running underneath in the opposite direction. Spent the whole trip casting eels in the whitewater and caught 24 fish from 15 to 27 pounds. Pictures of this catch as well as our most recent catchs can be viewed at our website www.customsoundcharters.com With the weather being as mild as it has been,...the Stripers may hang around longer than usual,....it remains to be seen |

Subject: Oregon Inlet Stripers Dec.6-9
*******Dec.6 pm trip "FREE AGENT" ******* Off this afternoon, with Ed metcalf and the Pilson crew. Not hardly any break in the Inlet.Tried casting in the shoals for a while. No bites.Decided to drop off the beach and try bottom fishing till the tide changed.Came up with a fair catch of Seabass and a few Gray Trout.Went back in to the shoals and fished till dark and came up with 6 Stripers in the 18 to 20 pound range.
********* Dec. 7 am trip"FREE AGENT" ******* Off this morning with the Bill Walker crew.Left the dock in the dark and was setting outside the Inlet at first twilight.Soon as we could see the breakers we waded in.After 5 or 6 passes we caught 19 fish in the 18 to 25 pound range and the action tapered off. Ran up the beach to see if we could find the birds ,....no birds.Dropped off the beach to try bottomfishing.Wasn't much to that ,...1 Triggerfish,1keeper Seabass and 1 Bluefish.
*******Dec. 8 all day trip "FREE AGENT"********* Off this morning with the Fred Kirchmann crew.Got a few passes in the shoals right at daylight and caught 6 Stripers then it died.Ran 14 miles up the beach looking for birds and tried 2 different bunchs and caught nothing. Ran back down the beach to a spot off the beach and tried bottomfishing. Smoked the Seabass on light Spinning tackle and caught a few nice Bluefish and a small Dusky Shark too. Got a call from one of my buds and he said that the Stripers were starting to bite again. Packed up and ran back to the shoals and caught 4 more nice Stripers up to 26 pounds.
****************Dec.9 am trip "FREE AGENT" ********** Off this morning with the Janese Trivette crew. With a strong front rapidly approaching our time was limited. We left in the dark and were sitting on the edge of the shoals when first light came.As soon as the breakers were visable to the eye instead of the radar we pulled in and started casting. Hooked several fish the first pass. Starting out on the second pass the wind hit us and I don't mean a little puff,.....solid 25 to 30 knots and gusty. We made a total of about 6 passes before it became unsafe as well as unbearable,....I mean like dipping the bow type of stuff. Had to get out of the shoals and went up inside the inlet and tried drifting for a while. We all came to a mutual agreement that we were wasting our time and went in early. Caught 9 fish up to 30 pounds!! You guys definately get the " EXTREME FISHING TEAM" award for the week.

Dec.4 all day trip"FREE AGENT" posted by Rick Caton
Off this morning with the Hudson/Mason crew,.. some good ole home town Pamlico County boys. Started out in the shoals casting the eels in the whitewater and caught a few that way.Took and ran up the beach to try trolling and caught a couple that way.Picked up and ran back to the Inlet and it was going off!!! It didn't last long but it was as pretty as it gets,...must have been an acre of them rolling on top when we got to them. When all this died we dropped of the beach and slammed the Seabass and also caught a few nice Gray Trout.Ran back into the beach and it was going off right up in the breakers. We wheeled the boat around and backed her so far up in the breakers that white water was frothing down both sides,....and so were the Stripers!!!!My God what a site. The boys were flinging the bucktails and the fish was a snapping. We kept our limit of 14 and released 23 . Fish were in the 18 to 32 pound range.Quite a few were in the 30's Thanks guys

**************AM TRIP****************** Off this morning with the Robert Trivette crew without Robert. What a bummer to book a trip then not get to go!! We watched daylight appear as we wallowed in the shoals.Pretty slow in the shoals.Had 2 bites in 1 hour .Wind was starting to pick up so we figured we had better start looking elsewhere. Saw some bids N/E of the Inlet about 1/4 of a mile and ran to them.Marking fish and loads of bait. With all the bait and the full moon it's a wonder they would even bite.Spent the whole morning trolling in the bait and birds and wound up catching 15 13 to 22 pound fish and pulled off just as many. Wire lines and deep rigs worked the best. By the end of the trip wind had breezed up to around 18 to 20 out of the N/E.Should help the fishing get better. For this up coming week I have Dec.3,6,7,8 and 9pm open. Well it was an interesting morning to say the least.Started out right on time left the dock at oo:dark30 {5:30 am) got out in the Inlet for the morning darkness washing.Got lined up in the dark and started backing up into the raging whitewater.Got right in the spot and all of a sudden there was a God awful metal to metal sound coming from under the boat.I hollered for my mate to pull the back hatch...and just as I had figured my steering rod was broken in half, and the rudder had swung around and hit the prop.....and what a GREAT place for this to happen,...right in the middle of the White Water rage!!!!I put the boat back in gear and told my mate to hold the steering tiller on the rudder straight and we idled out of the whitewater in the middle of the Inlet and dropped the anchor.Well that little manuver went well considering that the table was set for disaster. Fortunately I had a spare steering arm aboard that I had been hauling around for several years knowing that this type of incident would unfold one day. Spent about 30 minutes under the back deck flood light turning wrenches and we had her fixed,.....to which Phil replied "Way to go Lieutenant Dan!!" Ran back over to the shoals and made 3 attempts and caught 4 fish and looked S/E of the Inlet about 1 mile and "Oh My God" the birds.Cranked up our stuff and blasted off down there.Wound up catching 21 fish in the 20 to 30 pound range. As qickly as they appeared they dissappeared. We decided to run off the beach and try some bottomfishing.Wasn't much to that. Caught 1 nice Flounder and 3 nice keeper Seabass and a bunch of throwbacks. Enjoyed it Guys ,thanks for bearing with me through the early morning adventure. The Talley crew is pictured in the photo below *********PM TRIP********* Off this afternoon with the David and Darrell Penny crew.Made 1 attempt in the whitewater and took a couple over the bow and thought I was going to blow the windows out and I said "Enough of that". went down the beach looking for the bids. Found a few birds diving and a few marks and marked the Strpers several times on the color machine.Had 3 bites and caught 1 fish,...a 26 pounder. Amazing how it can go from chicken salad to chicken manure so fast.

Left the dock right before first light. As we went under the Manns Harbor Bridge you could see the Stripers busting Glass minnows. We caught 10 fish (2-4 pounders) casting the 6 lb. spinners and floating plugs. As soon as the sun busted out it was over . We left the bridge and ran on up the sound and found a few birds picking on some more fish.We tried casting but only had some sort of small fish chase the bait to the boat but no bites. We tied on some super small Stingsilvers and started catch the little fellas. It was baby Stripers!!!!We caught 11 before we took off again,....hands down the smallest Stripers that I have ever seen,...the water was boiling with them. I don't think a single one would have been longer than 8 inches!! We took off and ran to another school with birds on them and they were nice fish and they were trucking up the sound.Caught 13 of these fish then decided to run back to the bridge to try fishing for a larger fish with eels and didn't get a bite. Picture below is Lee & Sam ****PM TRIP***** Off this afternoon with the David Tremmel crew.It was dead at the bridge so we ran up the sound looking for the birds,....no birds no fish.Tried blind trolling ,..no bites.Went up along the shoreline casting the ultralight spinners and caught 3 more of those micro chip Stripers like we caught in the morning.Wound up back at the bridge right at sun down and managed to catch 10 4-6 pounders after dark on eels,...Thank you Jesus!!!! *****Nov.3 am trip "Big Stripers and Bottomfish Bonanza"**** Off today with the Butch Nielson crew. We opted to go in the ocean and avoid the "Fiberglass Jungle" at Manns Harbor. Picture perfect day for bottomfishing,..plus I had heard a rumor about the Big Ocean Stripers and I wanted to check it out too!!! Went out to the shoals and got right in the whitewater and washed around for about 25 minutes and came out with 2 20 pounders.Went ahead and ran off the beach to check out the bottomfishing. Boy,oh boy were they snapping.Came up with a good catch of Seabass up to 3 pounds and some nice Triggerfish as well as a nice Spadefish plus a load of throwback Seabass. This is the type trips that I will be offering in Hatteras after Dec.10. Oct.4 pm trip "Iron Will"
Off this afternoon with Gene Simms and his dad "Iron Man" Simms. Spent the afternoon casting eels around the Manns Harbour Bridge.Fishing was spotty,..catching 2 to 3 here and there. Wound up catching 32 2-6 pounders. We can all hope that we are as spry as these 2 when we reach their age. In the photo below 82 year old "Iron Man"Simms is to the left with "Bad Boy " Gene Simms at 60 to the right,...with a "Dandy Double" Oct.5 am trip "Free Agent" Off this morning with Gary Hammersley and his Dad.Chose to run up the Sound and go Striper fishing.Made 1 drag with the net and caught a load of Croakers and Spots for bait plus a few Crabs to eat.Anchored up and .....they were snapping.Caught 56 2-6 pounders .Photo below is Gary with one of the nicer fish. Gary's father who is 83 was slamming them hard too!!!,...he's in the other picture. ps. Thanks for the flag Gary Oct.6 am trip "Iron Will" Off this morning with Sid Little ,his son Dan and Dan's friend Jeff. Sid had fished with me eariler in the week and got on a good bite. Blowing about 20 to 25 out of the S/W made this a workout for all.Tried anchoring and casting eels,....that wasn't going to work so we went to holding the bow into the wind and letting the tide and wind push us along the bridge,....definate workout for all.Wound up catching 34 2-6 pounders. Oct.6 pm trip "Iron Will" Off Striper fishing this afternoon with John McGrath and Rob Paris. Started out doing the same thing as we did this morning, working the bridge with eels.Wind has fell out and started backing around as a MAJOR front is approaching. We found one spot where when you hooked a fish 2 or 4 would follw up.As the front was just about on us we decided to anchor there. For the last 1 1/2 hours of the trip it blew a solid 25 out of the N/E,air temps dropped about 10 degrees ,and it rained cats and dogs,.......BUT...the Stripers went OFF!!!!!Up to the time before the front got there we had only caught 16 fish,....after it was all said and done we wound up with 99 fish in the 1 1/2 to 5 pound range,....under !!EXTREME CONDITIONS!! I might add !! Oct.6 all day trip "Iron Will" !!!RED HOT TOPWATER ACTION!!! Well John McGrath and his buddy Rob Paris didn't get quite enough abuse fishing in the rain and 25 knot Northeaster yesterday afternoon so they decided that they wanted some more so off we go today. And yes the Croatan Sound was a lovely sight this morning!!!Blowing a solid 25 knots and gusting,...feathered white with cresting waves !!!The lady at the marina said "What are you guys doing here this morning??"When I told her that we were going fishing she said"Yeah right". Anyway before we left I added more new anchor rope to what I had to make sure that we wouldn't lose the anchor!! As we approached the bridge we could see a few birds working ,...as we got up to the bridge it was about as AWESOME a sight as I 've seen in a while. The Stripers were boiling the water, jumping out of the water, frothing the water, minnows flying everywhere!!!!It was as pretty as sight as you could ever want to see!! This was the first time this fall that we have caught them really good on artificals. For the next 3 hours we busted their ass on Yozori Topwater popping plugs.Every cast you got numerous strikes!!!Haven't seen it like this in a long time. Most of these fish were in the 1 1/2 to 2 pound range. In 3 hours we caught and released 141 {all on topwater} and the wind started falling out and so did the action. We pulled the anchor and went to the calm side of the Sound and got out on the beach to relax and have a shore lunch. By the time we finished with the shore lunch and relaxing ,..the wind had fell out from 25 knots and gusting to about 10 knots and the bite was over,.....it was basically over when we left to go to the beach. Anyway we went back and the action was over and you couldn't buy a bite with a artifical,....so we busted out the eels and finished off the trip catching 27 more fish,... giving us 168 fish for the day.
With each front from here on out I feel that you will see some top notch Striper action!!! Also I feel that you will see the bigger Stripers make their showing in the Ocean during the 1st week in Nov. if things remain on track.
Pictures of some of the catches mentioned in the report can be seen at www.customsoundcharters.com

Subject: Oregon Inlet Inshore 10/1-3
Oct.1 am trip "Free Agent" Off this morning with the Todd Altemose crew. These guys were troopers.Blowing and cloudy,...they were ready to go!! Ran up the Sound and made 1 drag with the net for bait.Came up with plenty of Striper baits,3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of crabs and apound or better of shrimp. Wind has been blowing so hard out of the north that the water was backed up and had started running back against the wind making for an asinine way to have to try and fish. Finally anchored up ,..upwind from the bridge but with the tide going against the wind,..so we had to leave the boat in reverse to keep us head to the seas,....what an asinine way to have to fish. Any way under adverse conditions we managed to catch 29 - 2 to 8 pound Stripers and 1 throwback Flounder!! My man T.J. is in the picture below with a nice sized fish for Manns Harbor!! Todd you should be proud of his fishing ability cause I've seen quite a few grown men who couldn't do as good as him,....he can hold his own!!! Oct.2 am trip "Iron Will" Off this morning with Mr. Sid Little on the "Iron Will" to do alittle Striper fishing. Started out anchored up at a spot where there was some marks.Fished 1 1/2 hours here casting eels and caught 41 2-9 pound fish.Mr. Little said to take him somewhere that he didn't have to work so hard !!!....so we took off to check out some other spots for Trout or Drum.Tried several different spots and caught 1 Bluefish. We caught several fish the size of the pictured below Oct.2 pm trip "Free Agent" Off on the "Free Agent"this afternoon with the Brett Coryell family.Ran up the Sound and made 1 drag with the net and caught our Striper bait plus a 5 gallon bucket of nice crabs. Went and anchored up at the Manns Harbor Bridge,...and they were snapping!! Fished 2 hours and caught 59 2-5 pound Stripers. The smile on Brett's son's face below expresses how we all felt about it!!!!!!!! Oct. 3 am trip "Free Agent" Off this morning on the "Free Agent"with Tim Artz and his side kick Dot .Ran up the Sound and made our 1 drag for bait and got it plus a few crabs. Not many crabs around today probaly didn't catch much over a dozen nice ones. Went and anchored up ,...and once again they were snapping.Could not keep 6 rods in the water.Fished 2 hours and caught 66 2-6 pound Stripers plus a 5 pound Flounder!!!Way to go Dot!!!Picture below is one of many dandy doubles that we released!! Oct.3 pm trip "Iron Will" Off this afternon with Bob Keenan and Dave Cho Striper fishing. Started out slow,....well slow for me cause I'm spoiled.Tried several different spots to come up with 13 fish,..then we got anchored in the right spot and things got hectic,..real quick.By the end of the 4 hour trip we had released 73 2-6 pound Stripers casting eels!!!Bob you can slap me for leaving my camera on the "Free Agent"!!!
We have concentrated on the Striper Fishing in Croatan and Pamlico Sounds during the last few days for several reasons. One being that the other types of inshore fishing that we do in the Ocean has been really slow due to the fact that the Ocean is still screwed up from the super hard N/E blow last week. But the main reason we have concentrated on it is that it is world class fishing even if you have to release them,.....you can always go to the fish market and buy fish but you can' t always get fishing like this.Pictures of alot of the fish can be viewed at www.customsoundcharters.com Calm Seas and Fair Winds to All

Subject: Sept.20-28 Oregon Inlet Report
**Sept.20 AM TRIP** Off this morning with the Marvin Mason crew.Once again, big swell in the Inlet plus 15 to 20 knot S/E winds hampered us from going in the ocean,...ohh ya forgot about the rain too!!!So up the Sound we went, made one drag with the net and caught about 1 1/2 bushels of nice crabs and plenty of Spots and Croakers for live bait.Went to Manns Harbor and live baited the Stripers.Caught 29 2-6 pounders plus 2 nice Flounders. These guys get the "EXTREME FISHING TEAM AWARD" for the week,...for toughing it out in the rain and the wind and having about as good a time as I have witnessed human beings having in a long time!!!!!Thanks Marv and crew!! **PM TRIP** Off this afternoon with the Dave Driver crew.Dave and Chris had fished with me on Tuesday morning on the "IRON WILL" Ocean still a mess so we took off to catch some live bait.Made one drag and came up with a 5 gallon bucket of crabs and plenty of bait.Went back to Manns Harbor and they were snapping.Wound up catching 54 Stripers in the 2 to 6 pound range.Chris's wife Susan is going to have a fishing seminar once they get back to the cottage to teach the rest of the guys how she does it.Out of the 54 fish I feel like she caught at least 18 to 20.4 men ....1 woman....believe me when I say that she held her own **Sept.21.PM TRIP**Off this afternoon with John Randolph and his son. Started out running off the beach to try wreck fishing but got a call from one of my buddies about abunch of False Albacore and Blacktip sharks. Turned around and ran back to them.Started trolling for the Alberts and hooked a couple .Pulled them in the boat and hooked them up on a big rig and fired them out to try live baiting for the Blacktips,.....no bites.Pulled the Alberts in and sliced them up and chummed with the carcasses.Caught 2 15-20 pound Blacktips.Finished out the evening trolling for False Albacore.Sliced up 2 for shark bait and released 12 more ** Sept. 22 PM TRIP**Off this morning with the Dyer crew.Started to run off the beach to go bottom fishing and ran across a body of False Albacore busting the water,Blacktip Sharks (Spinner sharks) jumping out of the water and Porpoise every where. We set out the trolling stuff for the Albacore, but as soon as we would hook one the Sharks got him and we even caught 3 sharks on the #1 Clark Spoons that we were trolling. Finally we got 3 Alberts to the boat and cut them for bait.We spent the better part of the trip fishing for the Blacktip Sharks and wound up catching 15 on fairly light tackle. They ranged in size from 15 to 35 pounds,...lost several screamers that chewed through the cable leader.Wound up with 15 Blacktips,6 Alberts and 3 nice Spanish. **Sept. 23 ALL DAY TRIP**Off today on an all day trip with Jeff Berry and his darling.Fog was as thick as you want it this morning as we left Manns Harbor Marina to go Striper fishing.Spent about 2 hours casting eels at the pilings and caught 29 2 to 7 pound Stripers,....and 2 had tags in them.We decided to pull the boat out and trailer it to Oregon Inlet and run out in the ocean. Ocean was as pretty as you could ever get it. Got out to where we wanted to be and jigged up afew Spanish sardines and fired them out .Connected instantly with a nice Amberjack,..but we couldn't stop him with the 20 lb. line. After it was all said and done we caught 4 False Alberts and had a Cuda cut an Albert in half and busted off 4 Jacks on a picture perfect weather day in the Ocean. **Sept.24 AM TRIP**Off this morning with the Tom Sonnier crew.Ran off the beach to try trolling for Spanish,Kings and False Albacore.Caught 1 Albert right away and had a cut off and pulled off another fish then caught a 12 pound King.Saw some sardines on the surface so we stopped and rigged up to catch them for live bait.Flipped out a sardine as soon as we caught it and pulled off a King.Had no more bites so we ran further off the beach to try bottomfishing at a spot that I haven't been to in a month. This was a joke,..caught 2 keeper Seabass and a couple of throw backs.Ran back towards the Inlet looking for Albacore and found some on a tide break 3 miles from the Inlet.Wound up catching 12 more 10 pound Alberts. **PM TRIP**Off this afternoon with the Mike Coughlin crew.Made 1 short drag with the net and came up with a few crabs and enough bait to go try the Stripers. This crew gets the "EXTREME FISHING TEAM AWARD" for the week.Blowing about 20-25 and raining. We anchored up and proceeded to pound the Stripers.Action was so fast and furious that we dropped a rod overboard that was hooked up to a fish!!!!!!! 30 seconds later we hooked the rod on another rod while fighting a fish,..cranked it in and wound in the fish on that rod.!!!!How about that.!!! Wound up catching 69 Stripers. **Sept.25 AM TRIP**Off this morning with "Dave"Daniel and "Patty"Betty Nester. These guys were real troopers.Cloudy and rainy and they were ready to rumble.Made 1 drag with the net and came up with a 5 gallon bucket of crabs and enough bait to go try the Stripers.Got anchored up in the drizzling rain and set out. They were snapping.Wound up catching 54 2-7 pounders!!! **Sept.26 AM TRIP**Off this morning with the Mike Kenny crew.Ran up the sound and made 1 short drag with the net.Came up with plenty of Striper bait{croakers&spots) and about a 5 gallon bucket of crabs. Ran back in Croatan Sound and anchored up,....and they were snapping.Caught 78 2-6 pound Stripers and 3 nice Flounders. **PM TRIP**Instant replay of this morning,....except not as much action. Ran up the sound and made 1 drag and went and anchored up.Reanchored 4 different times.Caught 29 2-6 pound Stripers.Tide had slacked and wind wasn't blowing very hard **Sept.27 AM TRIP**Off this morning with the Dan Knox crew.Started out trolling around the Inlet for Bluefish,..no bites .Picked up and steamed up the beach 6 miles till we found some bird activity and set out.Started catching nice 2 to 3 pound Spanish and Blues and getting some False Albacore bites.Wound up with 11 nice Spanish,12 nice Blues and 2 False Albacore and then they just quit biting,...sooooooo we picked up and ran back to the Inlet to try live baiting for a Shark,King or Cobia. Had some creature chase the bait for a while and couldn't catch it and that was it. **PM TRIP** Off this afternoon with the Ron Moog crew.Started out trolling for Blues around the Inlet.Caught 3 and decided to try some wreck fishing.Ran off the beach and the tide was running hard but we managed to scrape out 8 nice Triggerfish and 3 keeper Seabass and a load of small throwback Seabass.Trolled our way back towards the Inlet and caught 1 False Albacore. **Sept.28 AM TRIP**Off this morning with Chuck& Lorraine Andrews.Left the dock hoping that we would get the morning in before this N/E front came blasting through,...didn't happen.Caught a handful of small Bluefish and a False Albacore before the 25 knot winds hit us .It got so rough so fast that we just called it a 1/2 of a 1/2 day trip and went in early. **PM TRIP**Off this afternoon with the Steve Brown crew.Went up the sound and made 1 drag with the net and caught a few Crabs and plenty of Striper bait. Went to Manns Harbor and anchored up in the 20 knot + N/E breeze and blistered their butts.Fished 2 hours and caught 83 2-7 pound Stripers ,....2 of them had tags!! Photos of alot of these trips can be veiwed at our website www.customsoundcharters.com With no hurricanes in sight and conditions as they appear ,..I fore see some great fishing this Fall. Subject: Oregon Inlet Inshore Report Sept.18
**Sept. 18 AM TRIP**Off this morning on the 18 "IRON WILL" fishing for Stripers in Croatan Sound.Lots of up tide. Fishing this morning with Dave & Chris Driver from Pa. What a picture perfect morning,....slick calm, sunny, nobody around us and the fish were snapping. Spent the entire morning casting pencil eels around the Manns Harbor Bridge with light spinning tackle.Wound up catching and releasing 53 2-6 pound Stripers. **Sept. 18 PM TRIP** Off this afternoon with the John Burke crew on the 42 foot "FREE AGENT" .Due to the left over swell from the past Northeaster and combined with left over hurricane swell from way offshore the Inlet was impassable for us so we ran up Roanoke Sound and made 2 pulls with the crab net and came up with a bushel of nice Blue Crabs and enough live Spots and Croakers for Striper bait. Went back into Croatan Sound to the Manns Harbor Bridge again and live baited the Stripers again.Caught and released 54 2-6 pounders this afternoon. Pictures of some of the fish that we released can be viewed at the website www.customsoundcharters.com This type of fishing will do nothing but get better right on through Dec. **Sept.10 am trip** Off this morning on a Waterman trip with the Larry Fox crew.Ran up the Sound behind Jockey's Ridge to try dragging the net.Made 1 drag and came up with 3/4 of a basket of nice crabs.Ran back to the Inlet to finish out the trip trolling in the Ocean for Bluefish.Wound up with a good catch of Blues with a few Spanish mixed in. **Sept 10 pm trip**Off this afternoon with the Stan Kowalewski crew.Went back in the Sound looking for the Puppy Drum.Water was filthy and you couldn't see at all so we went to plan "B".Ran off the beach to try bottom fishing.Got to the spot and there was about 2 knots of tide ,...so we went down in flames. As we were sitting there trying to figure out what plan "C" was the cell phone rang and it was my buddy who was in the meat.Big Red Drum on top schooled up pushing north fast ,7 miles away.Cranked every thing in and away we went,.....the odds of the Drum staying on top long enough for us to get a shot was so remote that it was a joke yet at that point we had nothing to lose fore we had already gone down in flames twice.I ran the crap out of my poor motor ,..arriving on the scene and they were still up!!!!!!!Thank you Jesus. Got several pops in them and wound up catching 16 big Reds between 25 -40 pounds sight casting to the school,..casting bucktails on spinning rods!!!!! The Hurricane Erin swell is starting to hit the beach and the Inlet wasn't very pretty when we got there.I feel that the next few days will be spent fishing in the Sounds **Check out photos on website** **Sept.11am trip**It's hard to even post a report with the tragedy that has occured in America today. We were up wind ,up tide of the Manns Harbor Bridge with it blowing 20 to 25 out of the N/E when the anchor rope broke in the middle of what was starting to be a good Striper bite. Then we got the news of the tragedy that had unfolded in NYC and it really took the wind out of all aboard sails and the broken anchor line and lost anchor seemed really insignificant. I hope and pray to the God above that when we find out who is to blame ,that when we are done with them that there is nothing left of them but a smoldering crater. Off this morning with the Al Bader crew. Well we made one drag with the net this morning behind Jockey's Ridge and came up with a cooler full of nice crabs and plenty of live croakers for Striper bait. Went to Manns Harbor and anchored up and caught 10 Stripers in no time then the anchor rope broke and we had to hold the boat head to and drift the bridge and caught 9 more. Wound up with 19 2 to 5 pound Stripers!!Thanks for hanging in there guys!!! **Sept.12 pm trip**Off this evening with the Jim Jeffery crew.Swells from Hurricane Erin are still causing problems in getting out the Inlet,.,,so we ran back in the Sound and made 1 drag with the net and caught a bushel of crabs and enough croakers to go try the Stripers.Got to the bridge ,.no current or wind,..and also no fish.Tried for 15 minutes and could see the hand writing on the wall.Picked up and steamed back to the channel behind Bodie Island and wound up with an OK catch of Blues and Spanish trolling in the channel. ** Sept. 13 am & pm trips****AM TRIP**Off this morning with the Bruce Green crew.Still got the swell breaking in the Inlet so we stayed back in the channels .Wound up with a good catch of Blues and Spanish trolling in the channels.Looked for the Drum and couldn't find them.Tried drifting for Flounders and caught 2 keepers. **PM TRIP**Off this afternoon with the Bob Jones crew.Spent the whole trip trolling in the channels.Wound up with a good catch of Spanish and Blues. **Sept.14 am Trip**Off again with the Bruce Greene crew.Once again we are plagued with the swell breaking in the Inlet. So we decided to go for the Striper /crab deal. Made 1 drag with the net and came up with enough bait to go for the Stripers plus a bushel of crabs. Wound up catching 21 Stripers livebaiting with croakers on light spinning tackle. From 2 to 5 pounds in size

Subject: Oregon Inlet Inshore Fishing 7/23-7/27am
Well guys it has been one heck of a week thus far on the "Free Agent".This time last year we were experiencing great fishing with the crabs, shrimp and Spanish Mackeral,........not this year!!!It has managed to blow a constant 20 to 25 knots with it blowing 30 knots in the evening almost ever day so far this week with scattered rain and clouds mixed in plus a high enough humidity factor to crush Lawrence of Arabia!! It's been slim pickens this week guys so here we go with the report. Also I'd like to mention to the nice guys who stole one of my $500 shrimp nets from behind my boat, that you forgot a few items to go with it sure wish you'd come back and let me give them to you. **7/23 am trip** Off with the Tom Werner crew on the Waterman Trip.Caught 30 Bluefish and 1 Gray Trout trolling. Made a few drags with the net and didn't catch enough to even mention,..Sorry guys. **7/23 pm trip** Off on another Waterman trip with my #1 brochure man Bill Hannah.Made 3 drags with the net and came up with about 1/2 a 5 gallon bucket of crabs an enough shrimp for 1 small shrimp coctail for a 2 year old. Went trolling for Blues and caught 20 of them. **7/24 am trip** Off this morning on a Waterman trip with the Patrick O'Brian crew.Trolled for Bluefish first and caught 18 then made several drags with the net and came up with 3/4 of a bucket of crabs and about 1 lb. of shrimp. **7/24 pm trip**Off on another Waterman trip with the Wildasin crew.Made 3 drags with the net ad came up with 1/2 a 5 gallon bucket of crabs,no shrimp. It was blowing so hard and therewas so much grass that trolling was out of the question. We tried bottomfishing behind some islands and caught a few small bottom fish,.....and when the wind reached 37 knots and the tide about 5 knots we all came to a monetary agreement that we were happy with and aborted the mission. **7/25 am trip** Off this morning on a Waterman trip with the Kean Oh crew.Made 2 drags with the net and came up with a 5 gallon buket of crabs.Went trolling for Blues ,caught 2 and went in early. **7/25 pm trip** Off this afternoon trolling in the ocean with one of my long time guys Mr. Lombard and crew.Caught 14 nice Spanish Mackeral and 35 nice Bluefish. **7/26 am trip**Off this morning with Jim Del Real who runs Diamond Charters out of New York.Caught 14 nice Spanish trolling along with 2 small False Albacore.Went to a wreck and caught 8 nice Triggerfish on light spinning tackle. **7/26 pm trip** Off this afternoon in the Ocean with the Riley Repko crew.Blowing a soild 25 knots gusting to 30 or better.Caught 12 nice Spanish,10 super small False Albacore, and 2 nice Bluefish trolling.Stopped at a wreck and caught 4 Triggerfish on the light spinning rods.Riley decked a 20 pound Cobia and would have decked another had I been able to keep him on the gaff.As the Cobia was coming over the side he jumped off the gaff,..and he went one way and the bucktail went the other as I stood there with the EGG OMELET splattered on my face.I'm sure Riley was impressed,...Soorry . **7/27 am trip** Cancelled trip due to crappy weather. Well guys that sums it up so far for the week .I feel that things will start to turn around here,...it appears that the fishing was starting to pick back up on the last 3 trips,....hopefully it will be the up and coming trend!!!! |

Fishing Update 7/16 thru 7/21 posted by Rick Caton Custom Sound Charters
Well this week has been a fairly slow one here on the "Free Agent" fishing wise.We were plagued with a hard N/E wind preventing us from going in the ocean from Tues 17th thru Sat.21st but we made the best of it.Thanks to all the guys who endured the wind and slack fishing. ** 7/16 am trip** Off with the Rob Russell crew trolling up the north beach for Spanish and Blues.Caught 5 nice Spanish quick and that was over ,..no Blues.Dropped off the beach and tried bottomfishing .Came up with 6 keeper Seabass and a batch of small throwbacks.Saw 2 Cobia that wouldn't bite. **7/16 pm trip** Off this afternoon with the Kevin Carney crew to try a different spot off the beach.Wound up with a good catch of Seabass up to 2 pounds and saw 2 Cobia that would not bite. **7/17 am trip**Off this morning with the Sniatkowski crew on the Waterman trip.Started out trolling in the channels for Blues and then made 2 drags with the net and went back to trolling for the blues.Wound up with a 5 gallon bucket of crabs,30 Blues and 2 Grey Trout. **7/17 pm trip** Off on another Waterman trip with the Anthony Pearson-Shaver crew.Started out trolling for Blues and caught 11.Made 3 drags with the net and came up with a 5 gallon bucket of crabs and 2 pounds of shrimp. **7/18 am trip** Off again with another Rob Russell crew.We had left over crabs from a previous trip and not being able to go in the ocean we decided to go back in the Sounds fishing for the Stripers.Caught 18 3 to 6 pound Stripers and a Flounder,...Thanks Rob. ** 7/18 pm trip** Off on the Waterman trip with the Lee Brimer crew this afternoon. Made 3 drags with the net and came up with a 5 gallon bucket of crabs and decided to go down around the Inlet trolling for Blues,....and caught 4 Blues. **7/19 am trip** Off on the Waterman trip this morning with the Frank Graziano crew.Made 2 drags with the net and came up with a rounded bushel and a half of crabs and went back in the Sound Striper fishing.Caught 13 2 to 6 pound Stripers. **7/19 pm trip** Off this afternoon Striper fishing with the Mike Bodek crew.Saved some crabs from the morning trip so we went staight there.Caught 35 2 to 6 pound Stripers. **7/20** Canceled my all day trip in the ocean and booked Joe Hertel on the Waterman trip. It was effort just to find somewhere that you could just function with it blowing 25 N/E.Made 2 drags and came up with about 12 big crabs and went flounder fishing and caught 8 micro bluefish, and 5 potatoe chip size flounder. **7/21am trip** Cancelled my morning trip fore they wanted ocean or nothing . **7/21pm trip** Off this afternoon with the Holly Irvin crew to go back in the Sound Striper fishing.Got to the bridge and the tide was against the wind which is as sorry a condition as you can get get.Caught 4 Stripers and that was it,...sorry Holly. Once again guys,if your down here looking to book a trip,I would highly recommend not booking trips through any of the tackle stores on the north end of the beach, being Corrolla and Duck. These guys are out for themselves and the customer means nothing to them.I'll be more than happy to recommend someone competent or you can call Oregon Inlet Fishing Center at 252-441- 6301. Hopefully we'll have a nicer week weather wise coming up. We are also starting to take booking for the Fall and Winter seasons. Calm Seas and Fair Winds to All

Fishing update 7/9 thru 7/13 posted by Rick Caton Custom Sound Charters
**7/9 am**Off this morning with the Sue Campbell crew. We chose to try the ocean fore the tide was right to try the Bluefish. Sure enough they were there. We caught 95 Taylor size Bluefish and spent the remainder of the trip looking for a Cobia.Saw 1 and caught him ,...a 33 pounder. **7/9 pm** Off this afternoon with the Alan Watkins crew.We choose to go off the beach bottom fishing.Came up with a small catch of keeper Seabass and a bunch of small ones on one spot.Went to another spot and was surprized to find a few Amberjacks.Caught 2 of them a 70 and a 90 pounder. We use to have some great inshore Amberjack fishing, but in recent years with the influx of so many new "CAPTAINS"that kill every one that they catch so that they look like a "HERO" on the dock,..it is almost impossible to find them on anything within reach on a 1/2 day trip.It really blows my mind that these guys kill these fish in the numbers that they do,...they really suck as far as food goes and are by far better released .Alot of these guys are "PART TIMERS" and their trips are booked by tackle stores on the north end of the beach and some fishing guide servies. You guys that read my reports and are planning on coming here to fish should be really careful of booking boats through these stores. The stores have one thing on their mind,.."Book as many trips as possible, collect as many commissions as possible and to hell with the customer,..just put him on a boat with some jackass "Capt" and book more trips" .....that my freinds is a fact.Even if you don't go with me I would be more than happy to help direct you to a good boat with a good Capt. all you have to do is call. Any way back to the fishing report!!!! **7/10 am** Off this morning with the Mike Dombrowski crew.Once again the tide was right to try the Bluefish in the inlet. Well,...ha,ha,ha,.....the big joke was on us.No bites ,no blues soooooooo off we went to try a wreck,...once again we went down in flames, not hardly a bite.Went back to the beach hoping to find some Spanish or Bluefish while looking for a Cobia,........what a slow agonizing death!! Wound up with 4 Bluefish and 1 keeper Seabass.Boy we really sucked this morning,......but it was a beautiful slick calm morning in the ocean.Sorry guys!!!!!! 7/10**pm**Well after going down in a flames this morning we decided that we would go the other way with the Drew Hanser crew.Right out of the gate we ran across several schools of Jack Crevalles.Made several casts and finally hooked one on a live bait.Landed him,..a 28 pounder and released him after weighing him.Pulled up to another wreck and caught 11 nice Triggerfish on light tackle.Went to trolling and caught 15 Bluefish.4 Spanish and 1 False Albacore. We tried one more wreck and caught a Spadefish, and a few micro-Seabass. Where were all these fish this morning??? **7/11** all day trip Off this morning with the Joe Venazindis crew.We stopped in the inlet to try the Bluefish and they were snapping.Caught 90 Bluefish and then ran off the beach to one of the few good Amberjack spots that hasn't been totally raped by the part time "Wanna Be" boats and caught 9 40 to 60 pound Amberjacks. While we were there I managed through an act of pure elegance to let a nice Amberjack that was far faster than I ,....snatch a $200 rod and reel right out of my hand to never been seen by the human eye ever again,...as my son comments"Pretty work Dad"!!!! Oh well!! After we finished with the Jacks we put out some lures and worked our way home ,jumping off one nice Dolhpin. **7/12 am** Off this morning on the Waterman trip with the Kaleta crew.Made 2 drags with the net and came up with 2 5 gallon buckets of nice crabs and very few shrimp.Left and went back in the Sound and caught a handful of Croakers. **7/12 pm**Off this afternoon out in the ocean with the Yakaitis crew. Right out of the gate we saw a Cobia and pulled him off, then saw 2 more and caught 1 of them. When it was all said and done we saw 8 Cobia hooked 5 ,2 pulled off and we caught 3. 2 were Citations being 40 and 48 pounds and the smaller being a 35 pounder. We also caught 4 Triggerfish,3 Bonita Mackeral and a small Dolphin too. **7/13 am** Off this morning with the Kovi crew. The ocean was fairly choppy but we decided to try bottomfishing off the beach anyway.Caught 16 keeper Seabass up to 3 pounds and a bunch of small ones.Tried trolling a while and caught 1 out of 3 Dolphin bites. Finally ended up bottomfishing for Flounder inside the inlet and caught 13 Flounders with only 1 being a keeper. **7/13 pm** Off again in the ocean this afternoon with the Nunnally crew .Basiclly did the same thing as this morning.Caught 24 keeper Seabass up to 2 pounds with a bunch of small ones mixed in and caught 1 small Dolpin trolling our way home. Once again guys we have been invaded by part time "Wanna Be " so called charter guides that are being booked by tackle stores and fishing guide services. They do not have the customers best interest at heart ,....be very careful of who you book,..and I as I said earlier I would be more than happy to recommend a good respectable boat all you have to do is call...252-473-1209. Fair winds and calm seas to all

FISHING UPDATE 5/19 all day trip "FREE AGENT" posted by Rick Caton
Well the fog could not have been any thicker this morning. You could barely see the boats on the other side of the creek.Sooooooooo,we waited and waited and finally a clear spot came by and we left with it.I really hate the fog,....in the past some of the worst damage that I've done to my boat and boats that I have ran has been in the fog,......I'll take rough and clear any day.Anyway we went off the beach to try the bottomfishing for Seabass. First stop the fishing was pretty good with a load of small fish mixed in along with some whoppers.Second stop wasn't as productive with a few small fish and a few nice ones. Wound up with a fairly good catch of Seabass most in the 3/4 to 1 pound range with several 5 to 6 pounders mixed in.Took off and ran back inside to go try the Stripped Bass fishing back in the Sounds. On the way back to where we wanted to fish we ran across some Taylor Bluefish and caught about 30 of them.Ended up the day catching 20 Strippers on light spinning tackle. Weather man really missed it again today, forecast was 20 -25 S/W and gusty,...it was S/W 10-15 and switched to the NN/W later in the day. The water temps are warming up and reports of some good Spanish Mackeral fishing and Cobia sightings are starting to come in with the bigger Red Drum still being caught below us. I feel that you could have some great fishing on an all day trip ,where you could run way down the beach to Cape Point and troll for Spanish while you looked for the Big Reds and Cobia and hit a few spots bottomfishing on the way back.June is not fair from being booked solid and we have openings from now to then where there is a potential for some good sight casting on an all day trip. The smaller Reds that we were working on in the 18 foot "IRON WILL" 2 weeks ago {25" to 32"} are still here but have become very spooky from all the boat traffic.........imagine that!!!!Bluefishing has been outstanding for the most part back in the Sounds as has the Stripper fishing. We'll be running trips on the 18 foot "IRON WILL" till the 1st week in June then we will be full bore on the 42 foot "FREE AGENT" till mid Sept. when we will start running trips again on the "IRON WILL". Calm Seas and Fair Winds To All

Well guys the water temps are finally warming up and the action should be getting underway soon on the Ocean fish. We had an all day trip on 5/16 on the 42 foot "FREE AGENT".The weather wasn't exactly "light and variable" as our good buddy the "Weatherman" had indicatied. We were fishing for Black Seabass with light spinning tackle in 75-90 feet of water. The wind was a steady 15-18 knots out of the N/E plus we had a fair amount of tide making it very difficult to stay positioned over the most productive bottom. We caught and released a load of small Seabass and wound up with a fair catch of 1 to 2 pounders and 1 20 pound Sand Shark. We ran several trips during the first week of May on the the 18 foot "IRON WILL" sight casting for Red Drum. The fishing was pretty good averaging between 8-30 Reds per trip in the 25" to 32" range on 6 lb. spinning tackle. The fishing seems to have slacked off with the passing of the full moon, but should pick back up on the next one. Cobia are starting to work their way up the beach along with the Spanish Mackeral and should be within 1/2 day range within a week. Custom Sound Charters is located at the World Famous Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and we run trips year round. We have 2 boats to best facilitate your fishing needs. We are strictly inshore fishing and offer the 42 foot "FREE AGENT" for Ocean and Sound 1/2 and full day trips and the 18 foot "IRON WILL" for backwater light tackle fishing in the sounds, flats and bays. Check out our web site at www.customsoundcharters.com or call us at 252-473-1209 or on the boat at 252-473-8432 |

Subject: Fishing Report 4/15
Spring fishing looks to be in full swing here on the Outer banks, with catches being reported from the surf to the sound. On the inshore scene, puppy drum, speckled trout and small bluefish have begun to make a showing around Oregon Inlet; with SW winds being your best bet for the drum and bluefish. Striped bass action around the Manns Harbor bridge continues to be a struggle for most, including myself. After a mediocre week on the Poacher, we came back strong this Easter weekend, catching a charter limit of stripers both trips on 4/14 and releasing another 50 fish for the day. All of the fish were caught on eels; it was hard going for the trollers with just a few fish being caught on rattle traps. This morning, 4/15 we found a school of 1lb bluefish behind Wanchese and enjoyed some light tackle action, casting stingsilvers and small bucktails, we left the school biting with birds and breaking fish and not a boat in sight, really enjoyable when it works that way. We continued on to Mann's Harbor catching a limit of stripers and releasing another 20 for a wonderful morning of fishing. Big bluefish made a short-lived appearance last week about 15miles East of Oregon Inlet. If we get a few calm days look for them to show some where between 10 and 20 miles offshore, your guess is as good as mine exactly where. In the surf, small blues, blow toads and the occasional puppy drum or speckled trout have been biting along the northern beaches. The hottest action continues to be the point at Hatt. , with several large drum released last week and good numbers of puppies thrown in as well. Bluefish and flounder have also been making the occasional appearance. Striper season closes in the sound this Weds - 4/18, a depressing thought, but should reduce fishing pressure so look for some great catch and release action for the next month. Wreck fishing will improve with rising water temps and little bluefish action should continue to be good on SW winds. Good luck, Poacher

Fall fishing is beginning on the outer banks. The gulf stream is yielding great dolphin catches along with 40 to 60 pound yellowfin tuna, wahoo and marlin.Inshore boats are catching tailor blues, spanish mackerel, false albacore and sea bass. Open boats are catching speckled trout, red drum, gray trout and flounders. Piers are catching tailor blues, spanish mackerel, spot, pompano and black drum. In the surf tailor blues, pompano, croakers, sea mullet, red drum and flounders. On the bridge catwalks red drum, grey trout and sheeps head are being caught. As the water cools striped bass will migrate into the area providing trollers, surf fishermen and catwalks with some good fishing. The albemarle striped bass population is heavy. Lots of striped bass have been caught and released all summer. Light tackle and fly fishermen have had a lot of striped bass action. there are resident ocean striped bass that are caught by knowledgable fishermen all year round. The season is open all year in the ocean. Sometime this fall the Albemarle sound season will be opened allowing some of the striped bass caught there to be kept. Best wishes, bill |

Sept is Red drum time in Oriental, NC. We've landed fish to 43in this week and expect to do the same over the next few weeks. The big fish can be found in the Neuse River and the Sound are are generally taken on bait. The 2 to 10 lb fish are taken in the shallows on light tackle and fly. Speckled trout, flounder and bluefish are also being taken. Look forward to the shallow water fishing to get better and better into the cooler months. Oct and Nov. are excellent mixed bag months in the Oriental Area and Dec is great trout and striper fishing. You can also try out a little Cast and Blast trip that month....hunting ducks and catching trout and stripers...GREAT STUFF! |
