Subject: Hayward Fishing Report
The weather in the Hayward area has been very hot and humid the last month and a half. It has caused a slow down in the musky action, but the good news is that several other species have filled the gap for those willing to make a switch. There are still some nice muskies being caught in the area, but overall action for numbers is being reported as down by most folks. Several large fish have been boated. LCO has given up two fish over 50"s that I know of and the Big Chip has given up a few in the upper 40" class as well. Kent Dumonseau caught and released a nice 27# fish with me during one of the few weather changes that we have had in the last month. It was only Kent's second musky and largest to date.
With the decrease in musky action some folks are making a switch to other species trying to stay on fish. LCO has been absolutely on fire for big smallmouth. Every day folks are putting several fish in the boat that are in the 14" to 19" range. These fish are coming shallow with evenings being the most productive times. Leeches are the preferred bait. Bruce from Angler's Haven says that this is the best smallie fishing that he has ever seen. I have been doing a lot more walleye fishing then normal to beat the heat. I started out getting out after dark for muskies to beat the heat and have discovered an open water bite that has been outstanding to say the least. This pattern is working on several of the area lakes. I have no idea why these fish are so active, but it is fun while it lasts. The biggest problem is catching fish that are of eating size. Most of the action is on larger fish. We are practicing CPR on these bigger fish and hope that you do the same. Only 4 out of the last 17 fish have been under 4#s!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Ice Report From Hayward
Round Lake Round is one of the few area lakes to still be producing some walleye action. The fish that are being caught are coming in the 20' range with the evening bite being the best. Round is also giving up good numbers of jumbo perch right now. Just follow the crowd to find where the suspended schools are hanging.
Grindstone Jumbo perch are the ticket here as well. Walleyes on the lake have slowed to a crawl, things will pick up in two to three weeks, however.
Long Lake Crappie and gills are giving the best action here. The crappies are coming in 15' to 16' while the gills are in the weed edges. Crappies have run a real nice average size this year.
Spring Lake Spring has been the hottest place around for pike action. No monsters caught here, but for those looking for action this is the place. Good place for the kids to spend a day on the ice.
Smith Lake Smith is still producing crappie at the 30' level. Gills have also stated to feed in the North end shallows, 5' to 10' of water is were you want to be.

Subject: Musky Fishing in The Hayward Area
We are heading for another goofy fall. The weather is WAY warmer than usual and this along with several high pressure fronts that have stacked up back-to-back right after turnover have made for a couple of the toughest weeks of fishing (for any species) that many in these parts can remember. The best action is coming on the shallower flowages with the deep clear lakes being very slow. If the weather snaps and we can get some good wind and cold days things will turn around, if not, it could be another long fall chasing the queen of fresh water fish. |

Subject: Hayward Lakes Report
Currently the smallmouth and largemouth are just finishing spawning. Look for the smallmouth to be hanging around the same spawning areas but plan on fishing late and early during the day. Fish grubs and tubes or try some topwater early. LCO, Grindstone, Lake Owen, Whitefish and Round are our top smallmouth waters. For the largemouth look to the deep weed edges on Long Lake, Tiger Cat Flowage and Lake Chetac. Fish these with soft plastics or a deep diving crankbait. The walleyes are biting on both minnows and leeches. They are setting up on their classic summer time locations. Look for midlake structure and green weeds this combination will yield fish. Top lakes are Grindstone, LCO, Round and Chippawa Flowage. Crappies are done spawning and are on deep weeds and cribs. The gill’s are just beginning to spawn and will be available on most of the area’s lakes. |
