Hi,

Yesterday was my first day of fishing in Dubai. I went to Makhtoum Bridge as Pranab was kind enough to come and help us out. He showed me the methods of casting etc. After about 15 minutes I did manage to catch a catfish, though a small one and I released it back to the waters. Howevere, it was OK to catch a fish on my first day at fishing.

I would like to appreciate Pranab's efforts in helping me out.

SOME MORE FACTS ABOUT THE PEDATOR

GREAT BARRACUDA
Order - Perciformes
Family - Sphyraenidae
Genus - Sphyraena
Species - barracuda

Taxonomy
Johann Julius Walbaum first described Sphyraena barracuda in 1792. The genus Sphyraena is Latin meaning a pike-like fish. Synonyms include S. picuda Bloch and Schneider 1801, S. picuda picuda Bloch and Schneider 1801, S. becuna Cuvier 1829, S. commersonii Cuvier 1829, and S. dussumieri Valenciennes 1831.

Common Names
Great barracuda, barracuda, barra, Commerson's sea pike, and short barracuda are common English language names. Other names include alu (Carolinian), amerikanischer pfeilhecht (German), barkura (Miskito), barrcouda (French), barracuda bicuda (Portuguese), bicuda (Portuguese), chai (Palauan), gaviana (Portuguese), kadd (Arabic), kaku (Hawaiian), kucul (Malay), kupala (Hawaiian), ono (Tahitian), picua (Spanish), picúa corsaria (German), picuda (Spanish), seraw (Carolinian), snoek (Dutch), tenak (Malay), and zub-saalim (Somali) are common names that refer to this fish.

Geographical Distribution
Occurring worldwide in near shore tropical and subtropical seas (30°N - 30°S), the great barracuda is common in the western Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts (U.S.) to Brazil. It is also found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea as well as the eastern Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, and the Red Sea. It is rare or absent in areas of the eastern Pacific Ocean.

World distribution map for the great barracuda

Habitat

Great barracuda commonly occur in nearshore coral reefs, seagrasses, and mangroves. They may also reside in the open ocean, living predominantly at or near the surface, although they are at times found at depths to 325 feet (100m). Barracudas tend to be solitary but are sometimes found in small aggregations over reefs and sandy bottoms. Juveniles mature amongst mangroves and seagrass beds, habitats that offer cover from predators. During the second year of life, barracuda move to deeper reef habitats. Juveniles and some adults have been observed in areas that receive high amounts of freshwater input, however adults generally tend to avoid areas of brackish water.

· Distinctive Features
The great barracuda has a slender, streamlined body that is round in the mid-section. The top of the head between the eyes is nearly flat and the mouth is large, containing many large sharp teeth and a projecting lower jaw. The pectoral fin tips extend to the origin of the pelvic fins. The spinous and soft dorsal fins are widely separated and the double emarginate tail fin exhibits pale tips on each lobe. · Coloration
Body coloration of the great barracuda is brownish or bluish gray on the dorsum and upper side, with a greenish cast shading to silvery on the sides and a white belly. The upper side may have 18-23 dark bars most often observable when the fish is resting or over a variegated substrate. The black spots on the lower sides of the great barracuda distinguish it from other species of barracuda. The second dorsal fin, and caudal fins are violet to black with whitish tips. Young barracuda exhibit pale reticulations on the dorsum and a dark stripe on either side that breaks into spots as the fish grows. These patterns are somewhat ephemeral though as juveniles can alter their color patterns to closely match that of their surroundings. These changes in coloration serve to camouflage the fish from predators as well as well as wary prey. Adults have similar coloration along with a more silvery appearance
that is advantageous to a fish that swims near the surface of the water.

·Dentition
The great barracuda has a large mouth containing two sets of razor-sharp teeth, making it an efficient predator. There is a row of small razor-sharp teeth along the outside of the jaw with a larger set of dagger-like teeth within these. The closely set teeth are flattened and triangular with sharp edges used to tear the flesh of prey. Long needlelike teeth fit into their own holes in the opposing jaw, allowing the great barracuda to close its mouth. This gives its prey little chance of escape. This fish grabs its prey, swallowing small victims whole while larger prey is cut into pieces to be swallowed separately.

·Size, Age, and Growth
Great barracuda are large fish. The record for a hook and line caught great barracuda is 1.7 meters (5.5 feet), 44 kg (103 lbs) and the species is reported to attain a size of 2 meters, 50 kg. Any barracuda over 4.8 feet (1.5 m) in length can be considered very large. Based on scale analysis of large specimens, great barracuda have a lifespan of at least 14 years. Sexual maturity is reached at a length of about 23 inches (60 cm). At this size, males are typically about two years and females close to four years of age.

· Food Habits
Great barracudas feed on an array of prey including fishes such as jacks, grunts, groupers, snappers, small tunas, mullets, killifishes, herrings, and anchovies. Barracudas have a large gape and very sharp teeth, enabling them to feed on large fishes by chopping them in half. An opportunistic predator, great barracuda feed throughout the water column. Generally a diurnal fish, great barracuda locate their prey largely by sight. The body plan of the great barracuda is designed for speed and it is estimated that top speed for the species may be as fast as 36 mph (58 kph).

· Reproduction
The timing and location of spawning has not been well documented. It is believed that spawning takes place in deeper, offshore waters. Evidence exists that barracuda are seasonal spawners and in the Florida Keys they are believed to breed in the spring. During the spawning event, eggs are released and fertilized in open waters and dispersed by the currents. Newly hatched larvae bear little resemblance to adults. Seeking safety from predators as well as a source of food, the larvae settle in shallow, vegetated areas of estuaries. Juveniles become recognizable as miniature versions of the adults at about .5 inches (1.3 cm) in length. At a length of about 1.2 inches (3cm), the juveniles move to open waters within the estuary, eventually leaving the estuary altogether at a size of about 5 cm (2 inches) in length. These juvenile barracuda spend the remainder of their first year of life within mangrove and seagrass habitats. During the second year of life, they move to deep reef areas where they will spend their adulthood.

· Predators
There are few predators that are large enough and fast enough to feed on adult great barracuda. Sharks, tuna, and goliath grouper have been known to feed on small adult barracuda. Juveniles likely fall prey to a variety of inshore predators. Caribbean reef shark:
predator of the great barracuda

· Parasites
In general, the barracuda has few parasites for a fish that has been well studied. The monogean trematode Pseudochauhanea sphyraenae is an ectoparasite occurring on the gills of the great barracuda. Copepods have also been observed around the mouth area of this fish. Other parasites include protozoans, numerous digenea (flukes), monogenea (gillworms), cestoda (tapeworms), nematoda (round worms), isopods, and fish lice. The great barracuda is also parasitized by other fish (ectoparasites) including the live sharksucker Echeneis naucrates, pilotfish Naucrates ductor, slender suckerfish Phtheirichthys lineatus, spearfish remora Remora brachyptera, and marlin sucker Remora osteochir.

Importance to Humans

Although not prized as a commercial fish in North American waters, the great barracuda puts up a good fight and is therefore esteemed by some anglers as a gamefish. They may be caught with a variety of gear including handlines, rod and reel, seines, trammel nets, and gill nets. The great barracuda has been implicated in cases of ciguatera poisoning within certain areas of its range. Ciguatera poisoning is caused by the bioaccumulation of ciguatoxins in the flesh of tropical marine fishes. Ciguatoxins are produced by marine dinoflagellates that grow attached to marine algae and as such may be incidentally ingested by herbivorous fishes. Large piscivorous reef dwelling fishes occupying the apex of the food chain become reservoirs for the highest amounts of ciguatoxin by feeding on other members of the reef community. Poisoned people report gastrointestinal maladies that may last several days, a general weakness in their arms and legs, and a reversal in the ability to differentiate hot versus cold. The illness is serious and symptoms may persist for weeks.

Danger to Humans
Attacks on humans by great barracuda are rare. Inquisitive, sight-oriented fish, barracudas sometimes exhibit the unnerving habit of trailing snorkelers and divers. When attacks occur more often than not it is because a barracuda attempts to steal a fish from spearfishers or mistakenly interprets a shiny object, such as a diving knife, for the glint of a shiny fish. Such incidents usually consist of one very quick strike, the result of which may be a laceration and some loss of tissue. Fatalities from barracuda attacks are rare. In 1947, a death off Key West was attributed to a barracuda, followed by another case off the coast of North Carolina in 1957. A well-documented barracuda attack occurred on a free diver off Pompano Beach, Florida in 1960. The diver was bitten twice, and the resulting injuries required 31 stitches. However, such attacks are uncommon and more often than not easily preventable with a few simple precautions.

Conservation
The barracuda is not listed as endangered or vulnerable with the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The IUCN is a global union of states, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations in a partnership that assesses the conservation status of species.

HI GUYS ,

Just thought share some intersting facts about the great barracuda with you guys as the summer is killing all of us now .

Take one look at a great barracuda's
toothy grin and you'll understand why it has earned the nickname "Tiger of the Sea."

With its sleek, torpedo-like body, dagger-like teeth, and ferocious appetite, the barracuda is built to hunt in the ocean. And that's exactly what it has been doing for the last 50 million years. Any diver who's seen a barracuda attack another fish can tell you that it happens faster than you can say "anchovy." One moment, a barracuda will be drifting lazily among the coral reefs. The next, it's rocketing toward a fish and snapping it up in its jaws.

The Great Eating Machine
The great barracuda is an eating machine and it has the bulk to prove it. While some species of barracuda are less than a foot long, the great barracuda can measure up to 6 feet and weigh as much as 100 pounds. That's one big hungry fish!

So, is the barracuda a cold-blooded killer? You betcha! A barracuda is a predator because it needs to eat to survive. And it's cold-blooded because all fish are cold-blooded. They adapt to the temperature of the water surrounding them.

Barracudas Are Fishy!
If you think a barracuda is fishy looking, you're right. It's a fish. A barracuda shares several traits with most other fish, in addition to being cold-blooded. It is a vertebrate — it has a spine. It has scales covering its body. It breathes using its gills rather than its lungs. It lays eggs rather than giving birth to live young. And, it swims by moving its fins (including its tail).

In order to move up and down quickly to track its prey and to move around the coral reefs, the barracuda uses its swim bladder. A swim bladder is what keeps a fish from sinking to the bottom of the ocean, even though it's heavier than seawater. A barracuda can inflate or deflate this gas-filled chamber to lower its body or to rise.

Do Fish Breathe Like Us?
Yes and no. Yes, they need to breathe oxygen to survive. But, no, they don't breathe the same way we do. Fish don't have lungs at all. They have accordian-like organs called gills. In order to breathe, most fish gulp water in through their mouths and pump it over their gills. So when you see a barracuda opening wide, it's probably just getting a breath of "fresh air."

Barracuda are better adapted to hunting in the coral reefs than, say, a tuna because their bodies,
though long, are flexible enough to move through the twists and turns of a reef.

If it's such a great hunter, does this make the barracuda the most successful animal in the ocean? That's hard to measure. It hasn't been around for 50 million years just because it's lucky. But fish in general are an extremely successful class of animals. There are more than 25,000 different species of fish. This makes them, by far, the largest group of vertebrates. And there are millions, if not billions, of them. The oldest kinds of fish swam the seas more than 400 million years before the first dinosaur roamed the earth. So the next time you see a fish, show it a little respect, especially if it's a 'cuda.

Hi Pranab,

Good to hear from you. I have received my fishing license and that too pretty fast (in just 4days).

As i had discussed with you, I would need two fishing rods.

As i do not have my driving license and it's a big problem commuting without conveyance. Therefore, I would appreciate if you could let me know whenever you are visiting Deira so that we could meet up at my place, so that I could get the equiptment from you and also learn a few basic of fishing.

what i figured out today morning . even though due to hot weather barracudas hv gone deeper but if u notice carefully u can see them feed in the extreme outer edge of the reef .

this part is difficult to reach with rapalas . I think if we add rubber weights wich aree available at city center carrefour and throw the rapalas may be its possible they will reach them . May be i try that technique tomorrow at sharrjah and we can be successful.

hey kit i think then i drop my plans of rak tomorrow and go to some where near in sharjah spot . i have spoken with tayed he is also coming there . when ever u are feeling better give me a cal at my residence . Hope u get well soon .

Hi Udupa,

Welcome to this forum. Everyone whether new or experienced is welcome here.

Its a good place to learn & you have to be carefull because there is soooooo much information floating around that you have to decided what & how much you want to learn.

Some of the stuff that I have learnt, I may never incorporate, but is just fantastic to know.

Pranab may be fairly new at fishing, but he already has loads to share. Kit, Chua have bank loads of knowledge & never shy of sharing (thank you guys). Please keep in mind that the more you share, the more you learn. Ask questions, no matter how foolish it may sound.

Iftkhar, I still have to meet you. I know you have loads of knowledge.

Guys, I'm not sure about coming out this weekend or the following. I promised to settle things as home & will try & sneak out if possible.

The tide on sat evening is quite nice. High tide is @ 9:34pm, so the bites should come in @ 8:30pm onwards. May go to Maktoum if I can manage it.

Heber, kit, ronald, iftkhar, pranab, chua, what plans for the weekend ?

Regards,
Keyur

Dear Tayeb ,

There is nothing a experienced angler . I give u an example . I started this sport 2 and a half months back . Yes i did catch a lot of barracudas , sherris , catfish , half beaks and yellow snappers . But the most important thing in fishing is to incease knowledge form any one you can get hold of .

I have learned a lot from kit , chua , dada and even from his son smaller details . I keep my mind open and pick up things when ever i get a chance . You dont knw even i learned tying knots from keyur .

I am very lazy for learnign knots . But when ever i see a perfect knot from a angler standing next to me i will stop his throw and ask him to teach me .

No one is perfect in techniques that is what i belive . I was discussing with chua about the long casting techniques last night . Me and keur was at his place and watchign vertical jigging technique which is almost unkown here in uae .

He showed me two videos of longest casts and we were bot bowled over . When i asked chua to repeat it once more he joked that its becoming my obsession to be the longest caster in uae .

Its not that wht i want to attain . What i want to attain is to try to reach the fish in summer then they hv started moving deeper .

I have gone to dadas house no of times just to listen to stories where huge fishes were bitten off my pedators . I just feel nice to talk about fishing . Sorry i disturbed you during your meeting . But fishing has become an addiction to me which i am trying to crub and find time for my family which is also important .

Any way keep your mind open an try to learn from your fellow anglers when ever you get chance . Remember collective knowledge is much more than a single individual knowledge .

Thats the reason when every was mad at angler 13 i said i did learn some thing out of him also .

And thts the way i want to remain . Hope to meet you soon at the surf . Tomorrow morning i am thinking of going to the sharjah spot opp mamzar . Will you be there to join me and kit .

Me too never knew there were baracudas in Dubai until Pranab discovered them....

Tightlines, bent rods & discoveries.

Hi Pranab

Thnks for your call i am really happy that angler like your experience and caliber calling giving me congratulation and telling me techniques. Sorry about disconnecting you that time coz i had to attend one meeting. After talking to you i really feel that we are just kids in this sport in front of you. For sure i will be in contact with you to explore more fun in this sport.

Regarding your plan for going to RAK this weekend once i went for fishing with one of my friend Cornel, there is a good spot there but very small space to cast your gear coz many local RAK peoples are already there since early morning so difficult to find your place you had to be there very early morning any ways peoples caught some catfishes, stingrays and some travele and Giant travele (i hope spelling is correct for traveli),moreover i heard that fishing is not good there since hot season has been started its hard to find catch fish right now.

Hi,

Pranab -Nice to see you back on fishing action, and thanks too.

Looks like the Barracuda got bored waiting for you and finally changed their timings…..ha ha. Keep it up !

Today I was checking this post on & off but did not see anyone, finally I saw Pranab on post – it clicked to me like “Lost & Found” .

Hope you guys are getting geared up for this weekend.

Regards,

Ronald.

hi tayeb ,

CONGRATULATIONS , BELIVE ME WHEN PEOPLE THIS YEAR WAS TELLING THERE IS NO BARRACUDA AVAILABLE I WAS THE FIRST TO DISCOVER THE DUBAI BEACH FULL OF BARRACUDA . BUT BELIVE ME ONLY ONCE I SAW THIS SIZE OF FISH FOLLOW MY RED YUZURI LURE AND KIT WAS WITH ME THAT DAY . KIT GOT SO EXCITED THAT HE THREW HIS LURE TO CATCH IT BUT NEITHER OF US GOT THT FISH . THE NEXT WHOLE WEEK WE SPOKE ABOUT THE SIZE . AND IT TURNED BROWN WHEN IT WAS ATTACKING THE LURE IN DUBAI BEACH .

BUT YOU ARE THE ONE TO PULL OF SUCH A HUGE SIZE THIS YEAR . IN FACT I HAD AN IDEA THAT SHARJAH SIDE OF MAMZAR HAS THIS SIZES THTS WHY I WENT THERE THE WEEKEND WHEN MY LOST GOT LOST .

BUT ANY WAYS I GOT ANOTHER BLUE MICHELLE WITH ITS FAMOUS SCI GUIDES AND WILL CONTINUE FISHIG AT SHARJAH .

FR THIS WEEKEND I WAS THINKING OF GOING TO RAK WITH OUR FORUM TEAM . DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE ARE THE SPOTS IN RAK . IF ANY ONE KNOWS PLS GIVE THEIR INPUTS . MOST PROBABLY MYSELF AND KIT WOULD MAKE THE CORE TEAM ANDANY ONE ELSE WILLING TO JOIN CAN BE IN TOUCH WITH ME . Hi Pranab,

Haven't heard from you since the day you lost your fishing rod.

I think you should not stay away from your passion (fishing). This would not only be a loss to the sport, it would also be a loss of information and good learning resource for people such as me who have not still learned fishing.

Chearup and get back to your own self.

Great Pics Tayyab.
Where did u land this ?

Ronald, who is Kim ?

Kit when r u going off on holiday ? Back to the Philippines ? Do u need anyone to assist you with you baggage when you go on your trips? lol :o)

Everyone else, managed to find a shop with poppers :-) expensive equipment, but the poppers are @ AED24.00 to AED32.00 each.

Pranab, I got my new Diawa D-Turbo today. It arrived in Dubai from the USA on 4th May, but the chap from office who collects the company mail didnt inform me about it.

After handling heavy rods, this one feels very light. Looking forward to trying it out over the next few weeks when time permits.

Congrats !!! Kim and Ali – wonderful catch – keep it up.
Ali your fish on the bonnet looked like as if some babe was modeling.
Also let us know how was your fight with Barracuda, how long did you’ll take to bring out the catch. Did you’ll use rapala or some other lure?

All the Best.

Milkfish are better fighters, often come in school and easily spooked...bread is commonly used for fishing them, still looking for a better rig system, landed afew but not good enough. Very shy fish....use 4lbs lines and florocarbon leaders.

Hi Pranab,

I can understand your feelings since you lost your fishing rod and reel – but as Keyur said – pick yourself up & start again. Don’t quit fishing.
Although it’s hard to settle, but time will heal…………and we want to see you back in action.
Be thankful to God that at least you have so much knowledge about fishing-
You just lost the fishing instruments not yr. knowledge. Some people have best of equipments but no knowledge.

Hi Keyur – Thanks for information’s on Milkfish.
Can you tell me how do I get to Mumzar (Sharjah side)– fishing spot, if I am coming from Deira.

Ronald.

HI fishaholic,

anything caught more than a year ago is irrelevant. With the constructions happening around the gulf, especailly Dubai, the ecosystem has changed soooooooo much, that we dont get the same fish, size of fish anymore :-( its a real pity. But for us fishermen, its hope that keeps us going....we always hope for that big one.

so lets go out there & get them ;)

Have fun guys.

Hi Kit,

milkfish grow upto 1.7mtr in length, but commonly upto 1mtr. However I havent seen such big milkfish. Most milkfish that I have seen are @ 6" (inch) to 2'(feet) inlength.

Not sure about the bait, but I caught one on shrimp. It is said that they feed on algae & invertebrates. In australia, they have also been caught by fly fishing.

Chua is right when he says that Milkfish can be found @ this time of the year.

From what I have read, Milkfish larvae (hatchlings)after @ 2-3 weeks old return to mangrove swamps, estuaries, and sometimes lakes, returning to sea only when they are grown & to reproduce. So we should be able to find them now as the spawning season is almost over & they should be coming inland.

The largest recorded milkfish caught was 44lbs, caught in Lehua, Niihau (Hawaii)on 13th July 2003.

Kit, this article may be of interest to you. Says that Milkfish can put up a great fight.

<http://www.fishing.co.uk/article.php3?id=716>

warm regards,

Keyur

guys
I think Chua is right about milk fish.A couple of years ago I remember watching a few sri Lankan guys fishing at the creek-the abra station-al seef around 6-ish am,before the sun got rather sharp. They fished till about 7 am everyday (this was in June)and landed quite huge(the size of an adult man's arm)milk fish. They fished with floaters and used fresh bread for bait-like we use for safi. They dampened the bread with sea water and sort of kneaded it into a hard dough and used small hooks and covered the hooks with bread-bait.And for half an hour they kept reeling in fish-like two dozens of them in a short span of time. They fished during low tide.I guess it wud make real good 'week-end' fishing episodes!

HI Chua,

I dont know much about milkfish, but I'm sure that the spawning period for most fish is April-May.

After that the shallow water gets too hot for the hatchlings to survive.

I did catch a lot of silver grunts in April, but didnt get any in May :-(

Just got 1 milkfish in Sharjah, that too @ 2 months ago :-(

Hope u are right....have fun dudes.

Round 2 ! Ding!

The summer has just kick in.

Summer season fish will be grunters and milkfish.
That comes into both creeks for spawning.

Beat the heat, pals!

Hi Pranab,

Sad to hear the loss of your fishing gear. But i guess some one has stollen it.

By the way my fishing application has been approved but I need to attach the same documents for my wifes fishing license. I have done so and hopefully would get the approval for her license as well.

I would visit the Municpality at the week end as they have requested me to come over. Any Idea Why? Do i have to take any documents etc.

Hi Guys,

Its really surprising that some consider fishing a hobby, relaxation, an obsession, boring, a patience game, a sport & some make a career out of it.

Pranab......fishing (for you) should be a hobby not a career (dont make it one, you have only started & dont think of quitting).
You got a long way to go. From what I noticed, you dont enjoy fishing anymore. Take a 'chill pill' dude, calm down, relax & enjoy your fishing.

We all lose a lot of things in life. Lets not lose our way & giveup every time we faulter in life by mistakes we but learn from them. All you have to do is pick yourself up, dust yourself off & start all over again......

The thrill that fishing gives you doesnt come with an expensive rod & reel..... From what I know, you still have some equipment. Make use of it.

Kit, I had decided to stop fishing for some time as it was turning out to be an obsession. I have other priorities & commitments which had taken a back seat for the past couple of months. I love fishing & it is a passion. I wont give it up but need to call it quits at the moment till I get my priorities in order. Hopefully I will take the odd trip in a couple of weeks.

I will catch up with you guys sometimes ;)

Anyway, I'll be reading the forum, so you guys please update me on your trips etc.

Hi Guys,

Sorry i wasnt able to join you guys, i had some very important matters that needed my sorting out.

Pranab, sorry to hear your loss. remember that i always insisted on havign yoru gear inside your car all the time. (quite afew times i think) this happened to me a few times before and I did'nt really like it.

Keyur, why the last time for the season? i believe that theres fishing to be had all summer long...

anyway, i'll still be going fishing till i go for vacation soon. especially since im putting together a conventional surf outfit that i will be surely testing out soon.

see you in the surf!!!

Hi Ronald,

yesterday I set off early in the morning to Sharjah. I tried my old spot, but didnt seem to get any bites. SO I moved to my spot opposite Mamzar (sharjah side) at the breakwaters. We had a fantastic catch. I did keep only 6 fish for the table but we managed to get Yellow (black spot)snappers, sherii, breams & also queen fish. We caught 40+ fish. There were also some magnificent rays swimming just @ 3 meters away from us & their span was @ 4feet across. It was just fanastic to watch them glide on the surface.

All in all I had a fantastic day & a lovely end to my fishing season.

Regarding the hooks getting caught, its a very simple technique.

Once you cast your line, make sure that you have slight tension on it. Do not leave it loose as there are chances on the weight rolling on the sea bed & since there are lots of rocks there is a 75% chance that ur line will get stuck.
Another thing that you have to follow is to yank the line up & then start reeling. When you do this the weight is not dragged on the bottom, but lifted up & can be reeled easily.

If you fish there a couple of times, you will get the hang of things.

Your hook, line, weight (leader) arrangement is also important.

On a sandy seabed I use a different arrangement & while fishing near rocks another. Will show you someday.

Hi Friends,

How was your weekend, any fishing news?

Hi Keyur,
Thanks for your post yar, also let me know if there’s any alternate for atta, and what are the various types of fly’s for diff. Fishes.
You are right fishing is also a great relaxation, but when you don’t get a single fish one gets frustrated- at least a beginner like me
No fish means – I am not fishing properly and lacking the fishing tactics.

Yesterday I had been to Jumeirah at 6am but there were only 3 of them fishing and group of people sitting and commenting/laughing & enjoying their fishing.
I watched them fish for 15 mins. then I proceed to Mamzar side and started fishing – specially practicing my throws, although I did not catch a single fish (instead lost 4- 5 hooks and two weights) but was happy that I improved a little on my throws.
I was confused how I lost my hooks – when it got stuck in the moss.
What was the reason it was getting stuck in the moss, was it wrong arrangement of the hooks & weight ??…. Please someone advise.

Regards,

Ronald.

Hi Ronald,

regarding bait, there are various types of bait that you can use. I do not recommend Atta, but particular species of fish eat atta. the reason I dont advise it, is cos it comes of very easily from the hook. In order to catch fish on atta, you will have to strike on the very fish nibble that you get.

Will let you know how to make different preparations with atta & how to get it to stay on the hook :o)

HI Ronald,

fishing is all about relaxation for me & not a sport. I enjoy my fishing & I dont need to participate in any competitions or take up any challenges. I just grow in knowledge by observing people around me.

I dont intend on spoiling the fun I usually have & always prefer a light joke to take away pressure.

I do hope that everyone here lightens up & has a good time fishing.

Heber is a good friend of mine although I have just met him @ 1 month ago. I do hope to make many more friends. Besides making friends doesnt cost anything....just smiles :o)

Regarding my spots,

Although I had a Dubai fishing lisence, I used to go to sharjah earlier & have only just started fishing in Dubai @ 1 - 2months ago.

Dont worry too much about your casts. Practise makes perfect. I have been casting since I was 4 yrs old, but I'm only just learning the different technicalities involved.
Its more important that you enjoy fishing, rather than get everything right & not have any fun.

Heres wishing all of you a splended weekend with Bending rods, tight lines & screaming reels.

Warm regards,
Keyur

Hi,
Keyur “ achay majak kar latey ho”. Thanks for your post. So when do you usually go for fishing….any particular spot?.

Today I had been to Jumeirah. As I was entering the spot I saw Pranab coming out with his bag and lines, it seems like he had gone for swimming – fully wet. Before I could ask him anything he told me the sea is very rough and there’s no point in fishing, and indeed he was right- the waves were splashing high. But since I came all the way, I said let me have a look and at least practice casting without hooks- just weight.
Pranab came along with me and showed me how to hold the rod and how to cast etc..etc. , but when I tried it was like looking London talking Tokyo – I was aiming in front and the throw going on my right, it was not the way it thought. I need to practice, practice & practice. Thanks Pranab for your guidance.

Hi Everyone --have a nice weekend and happy fishing & don’t forget to post your views.

Good Luck,

Ronald

Hi Everybody,
How’s it going? Feel happy to read when someone
like Keyur, Pranab & Kit are answering new -comers questions with so much interest.
At the same time it’s sad to know that Heber is away from this forum; I feel -that he should come back. When someone like him who has so much experience discontinues for some reason - we feel the pinch.

I was wondering if some one can guide on using fly's (for fly fishing)- usually we beginners use atta (flour mixed with water), or some other bait to catch small or med. sized fishes say from Mumzar, or abbra side, .....can we replace fly with atta, bait.....how & when to use FLY effectively.

Thanks,

Ronald

HI Chris,

welcome to the forum.
One can learn a whole lot of things here. It just depends on how open a person is.

What kind of fish will you be fishing for. Different types / colours / swimming depths of lures depends on the fish. Sometimes one can use plugs or spoons.

Fish have a tendency of feeding at a particular level. Some are bottom feeders (Hamour/catfish) some are lower level feeders (black spot snappers), some are mid level feeders (bream) some are surface feeders (mullet) while some feed anywhere (sherii). Some fish are predators that feed at mid to upper level (Baracudda)& some predators feed at low levels (hamour again)

(please note that the fish named is only for example purpose)

Based on this, someone like kit can assist you on getting a particular lure. There are lures that float, some that sink & others that swim at different depths. Some lures are also called diving lures & dive downwards while you are reeling in.

There is an expert in Abu Dhabi (Jeen) who is a business man with his own boat. He catches a lot of big hamour & GT's. He has recently mentioned that the fishing season is almost over now.

Btw, I do hope that you have a fishing license as AUH is very strict.

If you need any help, please feel free to contact me. There are some others here who can give you excellent advise. See what they have to say.

Regards,
Keyur

Í have read through some of the archive and found this site very informative. has anybody fished abu dhabi or knows about the best fishing spots here? i've tried the corniche and the public beach, but have only caught small sherri and barracuda.

I mostly fish with bait, but i am looking to start lure fishing. Any tipps on successfull lures/colours?

Hi Kit,
Thanks for your post on knots- informations, although its going above my head, i will try one by one. I am also checking step by step type of instructions on fishing sites.

I would be interested to learn overhead cast...can you let me know when do you usually go for fishing and where ?

Keyur - Thanks for your information to load reels.

Best Regards,

Ronald

more about knots -

knots weaken your line - this is because when you tie the knot, even if you lubricate with (with saliva or water) it still heats up.

up to a certain degree, your knot will not be as strong as a piece of the same line with out a knot in it.

there are only two knots in the world that have 100% braking strain. this means that if your line is 20lbs test, that particular knot will break at 100% of its strain, which is 20lbs test.

this is the uni knot and the palomar knot. the uni knot is not a knot, it is a system, this is because you can use it as a knot with a loop at the end, a knot that clinches tight like an ordinary clinch knot, a knot to snell hooks with turned down or hammered eyes, or to join two knots together (pretty cool knot eh?)

the palomar knot is a very low profile knot, doesnt give you that much bulk so it can be used when the fish are finicky, its so easy to tie, you can literraly tie it in the dark, in a rolling and pitching boat with your eyes closed and one hand reeling in a fish.

clinch knots or san diego knot retains about 75-85 of the breaking strain of your line, a relatively strong knot when tied correctly and is a good, clean fast knot to tie. I usually use this in lines above 20lbs test since after that pound range a strong or weak knot wont really matter much.

blood knots are good for joining two lines of THE SAME DIAMETER. it will slip if you tie two lines of different diameters, in which case you either use a double surgeon's knot or a uni to uni splice.

there are also ways to DOUBLE the strenght of your lines, these are complicated knots that are mostly used for big game fishing. especially worth the trouble when fishing for big game with light line.

these knots are:

bimini twist

spider hitch

australian plaite

slim beauty

with double lines your 20lbs test would have knots that would be a strong as 40lbs!!!

you dont really need them when you are shore fishing, but worth the time to learn especially if you fish on a boat, or plan to go trolling.

Hi Fishaholic,

there are various types of knots for various applications. For a similar application, there may be many types of knots. You have to ultimately decide which type of know would suit your application & which knot would be easier for you to tie & you have to master them well.

I showed Pranab how to tie a snell knot (used to tie a hook) when I first met him, I'm sure he has mastered it now.

There are some important knots which one must learn for effective rigging of line.

1) Snell knot / Spade knot (hooks without eyes) - used to tie up hooks
2) Arbor knot - to tie a line to the reel.
3)Blood knot - TO join 2 lines (mostly leader to main line)
4) Surgeons loop (to attach hooks to the leader / line). This is used so that you can change the hooks on the line without changing the leader.

these are some of the knots that I use, besides this there are many many more. I'm sure we all will have our favourite knots & there are also certain precautions that one must take while tying some of the knots. One of them would be to wet the line before pulling the knots tight. This would reduce friction & line burn out while tightning. At the same time we should not over tighten the knots as this would build up stress, the line would stretch & would become weaker.

there are various websites which teach you various knots. Many of them are in animated format & one can pick it up easily.

Regards,
Keyur

Fishaholic,

learn to tie the clinch, uni, plaomar and blood knots properly, look for instructions in the net, there are a lot of them out there even animated instructions.

the overhead is the most basic, but i'm willing to bet that you havent MASTERED it yet. i have seen so many people in dubai who dont execute it properly and the result is that they dont reach their maximum potential distance.

i'm always with pranab, heber keyur and at times with chua in one of the beaches, if anyone would be interested, chua and i can teach the proper execution of the overhead...what say chua? you up for it?

see you in the surf!!!

fishaholic,

the pendulum cast (or swing) isnt so easy to learn, you first have to master (and i dont just mean learn) the basics before going into it.

learn the overhead cast (also called the unitech cast) and the OTG (on the ground) casts. you must learn how to execute them properly before going into the more complicated stuff.

learn your knots properly before anything else because at the end of the day, it is the one single most connection that brings the fish in.

see you in the surf

Ronald,

following Keyur's instruction, you must lay the spool flat and have it go out of the spool to the spool of your reel in loose coils. if you run a pen in the hole of the line spool and load you reel that way, you will have line twist.

you also have to check when you load the line when the spool is laid flat, if you have line twists, flip the spool around, that should solve it.

the "loading" i was talking about by the way (just to clear it up) is the way you load your ROD, this means how you bend your rod backwards to propel your lure/bait in the cast.

hope this helps.

pranab,

yozuri hybrid is one of them, as is trilene XL.

hope this helps,

see you in the surf!

Hi Ronald,

to attach the line to the reel you have to use an Arbor knot. With this knot, the line will be firm on the reel when you start winding it & there are less chances of it slipping off the reel.

while winding the line, you have to make sure that the line is firm (under slight tension) else there are chances of nesting when you cast your line.
