Hello Ronald, Good to see you are finally out fishing. Regarding fishing over rocks, I would first of all like to point out losing tackle is part of the game. No angler, however experienced, can say he/she never loses weights and hooks to rocks. There is no textbook that can teach you how not to get stuck, but you do minimize your losses as you gain experience. Float fishing is not really an alternative; it is a different form of fishing and you would be targeting different species of fish, unless, of course you are fishing shallow water. Here are some of tricks I learnt over the years, that do let you save most of the time. * After casting, allow your bait to drop down gently. Once the weight has settled on the bottom, take in the slack very gently - there is no need to make the line absolutely taught. * Avoid moving the weight once it has settled over the rocks. * Use appropriate rigs: Fish-finder/paternoster rigs are less prone to snag than bottom-feeder/running leger rigs. * Strike gently: When a fish takes up bait there is no need to strike heavily as do most of the people around you. If you miss, a heavy strike will only ensure the weight or hook gets snagged somewhere. * If you do feel you are snagged on the bottom, do not pull hard unless as a last resort; instead, give the line lots of slack and wait for five minutes. Many a times, the current/waves will free your tackle for you. These are just a few tips that came to my mind this moment. The bottom line is there is no substitute for experience. Once you start doing something, you do that awkwardly; gradually, however, you begin to master and your senses and reactions begin to fine tune to that act. It then becomes part of you. To achieve mastery, you have to practice and practice and practice… you certainly will lose many hooks and sinkers, but think of it this way: If you had to hire a coach to teach you the same, you would have paid a good amount. Fortunately, hooks and sinkers do not cost much. Have a nice weekend! Ijlal |

Hi Vivek The marina in question is the Dubai Marina, off Sheikh Zayed Road past Mall of the Emirates but before just before the DEWA power station. I'm sure many of the breakwaters (ie rock structures that go out into the sea) along the whole coast - Umm Suqeim/Jumeirah are also good places to fish from. I just fish the marina area cos it's near my house! The only things to be careful of are 1) wet rocks at low tide - very slippy and very dangerous - be careful of wet/green rocks near the water. 2) if bottom fishing you can lose a lot of tackle/fish in the rocks. Float fishing could be one answer as some posters have mentioned. Using old spark plugs instead of lead weights on a rotten bottom is another solution if you want to bottom fish - that way, if you snag up in the rocks you only lose the spark plug, not the rest of your gear. I don't bottom fish usually, I spin with either a sabiki rig or a yozuri sardine, as my target species are queenfish/kingfish/mackerel/trevally barrcuda. Any tackle shop should have these. I don't fish all that often here (twice since August), and there are many members of the forum who are far more experienced fishing Dubai than me. I don't know where you live in Dubai, but try wandering down to your local fishing spot and see what other anglers are doing...this can be a good way to learn. Best Richie |

Looks like fishing is improving - had a good number of queenfish and barracuda this morning from the marina, spinning as usual. There are some baitballs moving around here, and also in the Jumeirah region near the breakwaters in the late afternoon/early morning. If queenfish/mackerel are hitting the baitball, a well-placed set of feathers/small spinner should do the trick! Best Richie |

Dear ronald , There is only one answer to your problem . Try to use a float and see if there is any diffrence . I hope that will help . Both side of the mamzar canal its very croppy . Hence i think that is the best technique . Keyur fishes there a lot and as per him its his fav spot . So you can ask him for help . This weekend i was there and watched him pull out a hamour from the rocks . So he is the best man to ask for . regards Pranab |

Hi Friends, Hope you all had a nice weekend. I had been to Mamzar Park with my Family and Friends on Friday. I had gone for fishing over there, but got only small ones. Infact I lost 3 sets of hooks. Here I wanted guidance from the experienced members. Let me explain what I did…..I started with casting the line to maximum distance, and I did not get any bites, (I used squid and chicken pcs as bait) I waited, waited then threw the lines again and again but did not get any bites, then I tried throws somewhere near the rocks, suddenly I felt good bites, and when I tried to retrieve the line it got stuck and I lost the hook, in this way I got good pull but lost 3 set of hooks. I tried two methods: 1st method – I pulled the line immediately after the 1st bite, but no luck. 2nd method - I tried waiting for 2- 3 pulls and then tried to reel in but it was too late and hook was lost. I even wait for some time thinking that the fish would come out of his hide out, but no luck. As per my idea I feel the Rock fish was biting the bait and running away with my bait/hook under the rocks. Can anyone suggest what should I do in this situation to get the fish out? You can alternatively reply on my email id rivolironald@hotmail.com Regards, Ronald |

Simeon, Dibba is about the same distance from Sharjah as is Fujairah. It is a beautiful place with deep clear aquamarine water with a back drop of rugged Hajar Mountains that are mist shrouded in the mornings giving an unforgettable view hinting on absolute serenity. The waters are ideal location for a host of gamefish. Trolling can be very productive and thrilling. On the other hand, there can be days when you come back empty. As it is the start of fishing season here, it is very unlikely to come back empty handed; however, it is our practice to be prepared for a lot of eventualities, so we do carry bait with us. You can get a boat for around AED 700 on the average for five hours, which is about as cheap you can get anywhere around here. I, along with my fishing buddy are planning for a boat trip out of Abu Dhabi this Sunday, and can possibly divert our trip to Dibba and guide you to a joint trip if we come to an understanding. If you would like to discuss of a possibility, do give me a call on 050-3232425. Thanks, Ijlal |

My dear Pranab, I wanted to give a detailed reply to your post; however, as this is a month of kindness and patience, I will just hold short by saying you have not been very honest about everything. I enjoyed that trip and so did everybody on our boat. All four of us fought at least a few of the longtail tunas and kawakawas (sorry there were no skipjacks!) We landed 7 in the range of 2 to 3.5 kg, and probably lost as many. We could have landed many many more if we had been prepared to catch these ferocious little fighters - We had everything ready for the big blokes! I however, do not count the success of a fishing trip by the size of the larder, but by the thrill and excitement derived out of it. You say there were very few fish when there were literally tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of these wonderful creatures that would put a barracuda three to four times their size to shame. Had my old sea-trained eyes not come into action, the boatman would have taken us along the cliffs just as yours. We might even 'ave caught a good size grouper along the way, but would have missed all the action everybody enjoyed. Why you must start a competition what you caught, what we caught, how long you stayed on water and how long we did, is a matter beyond my understanding. And by the way may I remind you once again my name is SYED IJLAL HUSSAIN; SYED and IJLAL are not two different people. My friend is SHAHZAD not SYED! Cheers, Ijlal |

Thanks, Alaska is really beautifull and wild. After one step beside the street there was maybee nobody before you. Halibut catching is not so difficult. They but on the bottom on Hering or cod, salmon or you can catch them with plastic lures. There is a massive current and that make it dificult. Red Salmon never bite when you catch them into the river...this is all a kind of technique. King salmon get your lure because of a reflex not of eating. I fish there than more than ten years and I can tell you a lot about salmon fishing of you want. |

i see the forum is heating up again and that too for the wrong reasons...fishing is dependant on numerous different factors like weather temperature tide, moon phase and many others...so i find it quite shocking that you are willing to base your entire opinion on boat fishing upon 1 average day of fishing...and i also see that our dear friend jessica is back running his mouth as usual...grow up yourself...and its trigger fish not tigger fish!! |

Owis , I never fished from the deira side . I always from the court side under the bridge . And from there i meant right side if u stand under the bridge looking towards the golf club . The approach to this place is from the dubai court side parking adjacent to the bridge . Hope that helps . Your second question about sharjah coast line , sorry to say i have hardly gone on boat from sharjah coast so i wont be able to help you on that . But hope this helps ELCOM INTERNATIONAL 3244421 they run sonar all along the sharjah coastal region and give you exact location of wrecks along the coast line . Beside this you can contact fish pals who goes on regular boat trips ex sharjah and ajman . And if you are looking for shore fishing spots then i would advice you to get in touch with tayeb who is a very passionate fisherman from sharjah & also a forum member . Hope that helps . regards pranab 0506789546 |

Respected ijlal bhai , First of all i would like to tell here openly in the forum my fishing knowledge is very limited . I am a toddler infront of you and guruji who are stalwards of the game in dubai . You guys have spent your lives behind fishing , so how can i challange your grey hairs . The second point is i would hate to rake up another non fishing controversy on this forum . But i am sad that you are trying to link my words with a incident which has no relevance . I just expressed my views as a forum member when a new member has joined and was asking something . One thing i agree with you yes i have gone only 5 times to sea for fishing . So my knowledge is quite limited . But i definately disagree on the other point. Let me ask you when we went what was our catch . Our boat got may be max 4 hamours and 8/10 tigger fish . Our boat was at sea from 9.30 morning till 1.30 afternoon . We had two fisherman on board me chua and tayeb . Your boat had you , guruji , tayebs brother and your friend syed . Your boats catch max 5/6 skip jacks a 2/4 sherries 1 queen fish . Your boat was at sea from same 9.30 till almost 4.45 . So 2 boats 9 fisherman (including 2 boat men who fished with hand line ) managed to pull out in total 24 fishes spending 13 hours approx . So here we have to agree on one point . 1) Either we all dont know how to catch fish . 2) Or there was less fish when we went I would leave that to you to take the decision which one is appropiate . Hope you agree it would be stupid to blow trumpet with the above given stats of our catch . Because its a reality that catching a few skip jacks or a few tigger fish and then boasting on that will make our selves a laughing stock . lastly i although have very little knowledge about sea fishing i would like to point out the boats on which we were i dont think they are meant for trawling . You need game boat to do that not wodden dows which dont have any equipment . At the end i would once again say sorry to all he senior fisherman that if any one of them got hurt because of me please try to forgive me . I always belive two words in fishing . 1) Fishing is like golf . 2) I see what i belive . By the way the season is not yet in and hiring a boat might be wastage of money right now is not my words . There are the words of the owner of OCEAN ACTIVE .I happen to talk to him over a probable fishing trip later this month . So please dont misunderstand any one of my comments . Hope my above clarifications wont arouse sentiments once again here he he . Because all the time i find in the cross fire without any reason . This time i would also like to scream like our old member heber . Please spare me out of controversy . regards pranab |

Pranab, Sorry to intrude, but how many times have you fished from a boat? Don't give advice on something you yourself would need some. The boat we were in was big enough for 10 people, let alone 7; however, 7 could not have trolled together, so arrangement of 2 boats was good for that purpose. Also, there would be lots of fish right now around Dibba area, provided one knows how to find it. No hard feelings... Syed |

hi mehdi , The average cost of hiring a boat per person is around 150-170 dirhams with a capacity of 4 people . Well it depends how many people you want on the boat . Some risk their lives and take 8 people on the boat and risk their lives . But i dont think its advisable to take so many people on board because here in dubai mostly are small boats and human life is more expensive than 100 dirhams . There are various fishing spots off the coast of dubai and sharjah and also specially in mussandam in the east coast area . If you have the spots of the ship recks normally they are good fishing spots . There is a book underwater uae which is actually a diviers guide and cost around 100 dirhams and avail able in all eppco and enoc shops from the publisher explorer . You can grab them its a good guide . Besides this there are local fisher man spots created by locals who dump used tyres in the sea bed off the coast of sharjah and dubai also where you can go for bottom fishing . But i would advice you not to go for boat fishing and waste money because and wait for 15 more days when the temp dips . You can get loads of fish then . As far as cat fish is concerned you dont hv to hire boat at all . The best spot for cat fishes weight 4-8 kgs are available under Makthoum brize right side corner . They are very good fighters and you will definately enjoy the fight of the cats . regards Pranab 0506789546 |

Hi Joerg As the other posters have said, there are tackle shops in Deira near the library/post office/fire station on Baniyas Street - Sea Star is one, tel 04 225 8000. It's almost impossible to park here though, unless you park in a private car park. There is also Picnico/Al Boom on the Beach Road, Jumeirah,in a petrol station about 4 kms down from Mercato mall 04 394 1653 and another tackle shop in Jumeirah 1 opposite the Town Centre Shopping Mall. They even sell fishing stuff in Carrefour, Mall of the Emirates, though limited selection. |

hi joerg , The area which you mentiond me later over phone near the sheraton coast it might be a cat fish also because that area is not that deep for a cobia . But if it was catfish then when u try to reel in it sways from side to side . You never know what fish it is but from the area u mentioned i think it might be sea catfish . Or may be hamour also because that area is croppy . But what ever it was i think it was big . Congratulations because at least you did hit a big fish . From the forum it seems no one hitting big ones yet . May be a few days max 15 days more we have to wait . regards |

Hello, just came back from fishing near Marina. I got a couple small ones and then I just put my hook into the water, it was 6.30 I got ahuge bit. I fish on the ground and just when the shrimp touch the bottom the fish goes up like a rocket. I got 30 fireline and a good pull but this fish was very strong. So I fight him for 5 minutes and then he run into the stones an I lost him because my hook line broke. I didn t know that there where so huge fish close to the shore. I talk to Pranab because I thought it was a baracuda, but I never cought a baracuda (2 nd time fishing here) and he means it was a cobier. I dont know which species he mean but he will it explain. http://www.arabianwildlife.com/nature/marine/fsh06.html |

Hi guys, how are you all? sorry for being away for a while but as I told you earlier, I was on vacation and came back before 2 weeks. it took me sometime to finish all my pending work and some personal stuff. Anyways, I see that my luck is not much better than any of you, there are no fish in the water. I went on friday night till early morning saturday to Maktoom bridge, first there was a sinking cargo wooden boat that hit the bridge at 1 am and a lot of police boats and a big crain trying to pull the boat to safety, the reason was that the boat was tied loose and went with the current inside the greek to hit maktoom bridge. they didnt finish till 2:30 am and the big crain was still there till morning. all that time and I was trying to catch some fish using shrimps one time and dough the other time, the score was zerooo, nothing, there was nothing in the water, not even one bite. I don't think it's because of the heat coz that night was so nice, with some breez in the early morning. I just don't understant???? anyway, we are not going anywhere, we will be waiting for the big catch because we dont give up. wish you all best of luck and nice catch. see you Hussam |

Although the other places where they were sighted they are coming but in very few numbers. regards pranab |

Let us know how you get on shore fishing Joerg. I fished the Marina last weekend late afternoon, spinning and sabiki rig - nothing, not even a half beak! A couple of other guys were bait fishing on the bottom and had nothing either. Maybe it's still too hot. |
