Reel for Sale Hey Guys, I have brand new large capacity Daiwa spinning reel (8-bearings) on sale at www.souq.com (try searching 'fishing' or go to Sporting Goods section. I am not looking for profit and selling it at about landed cost. It is a good reel but currently I have no use for it, as I want to gradually go completely conventional. I did fill up one spool with 400 yds plus of Rapala Finesse line valued at AED 40 but never used the reel (got it from the USA) If anybody from the forum is interested, I will give the line as a bonus otherwise if I get a customer on Souq, I'll remove the line. Please be advised about 65-70% of the line is brand new while the remaining was used a few times on my ambassadeur baitcaster before I filled it up with fireline, but it is in very good shape as I have removed the uppermost portion that might have got some nicks. If any of you is interested and has any question you can send me a private email (see my profile.) Thanks, Ijlal |

Hey all at least this forum is certainly not dull - which is great. I went to DragonMart last night and was a bit disappointed. I found a lot of 'plastic' stuff and nothing really serious for trolling. I did buy a rapala-wannabe lure for Dhs 15 and some crimps that ended up being too small. I was also looking out for some .80mm line but found none... Having said that, I guess it's pretty decent for anything unrelated to trolling. I hear there's a chance of rain on Friday - someone tell me it's not true!!!!! |

Hello Ijal, Yeh thanks alot for the info! Not even any barracuda?! I agree bottom fishing still produces some nice shari etc but its been a long time since ive had anything big trolling! Its a shame considering what fish used to be caught especially round 'the boot'. Maybe its time to switch to the east coast i gues! thanks, Bart |

Hey there Fellow anglers. Goodmorning ... i see the discussions are getting a bit heated here ... lol ... anywayz ... Syed, sorry mate, i didn't mention that the marlin we caught in capetown is the largest ever caught in africa only and now hold the Africa record. I have a picture of it somewhere .. i'll try and see where i can post it... Syed and to all others, can i suggest something ... Instead of going on about who, what and why ... can those who are interested in taking things forward , meet for coffee. some place just to meet and get to know each other and most of all to become good friends first. Lets do things as a team and not as individuals. This is just a sincere thought ... so please do not go firing away emails at me ... just ignore if not interested ... :-) Have a good day guys. |

Hello Bart, Welcome to the forum! I cannot say much about sailfish, but the situation at the moment doesn't seem very positive. Last Saturday, we went out of Dubai Marina, and went up the channel to Zainab shipwreck. All we could find was a solitary kingfish. The fishfinder did show a couple of small fish here and there but there were no bait balls and no surface action of any importance was seen. The fish on the screen were deep down and as our boat did not have a downrigger, there's no way of telling what those were. As a last resort, we started to do bottom fishing and managed to land some decent Sha'ris but by then our time was up so we came back. From what I saw, I think you would have to go much farther and find blue water at depths of over 50 meters if you are looking for sails. Hope this helps, Ijlal |

Hey Casper, Thanks pal for taking it positively. Listen, I said what I thought was best. I may not be right in some people's views but if I write what I feel is wrong, wouldn't that be hypocrisy? Of course, you can do whatever you wish. By the way, I would like to point out the 250kg black marlin is not the biggest one caught, nevertheless, it is an awesome fish by any standards. As you are going off to S.A. I do wish you catch some big ones yourself - Best of luck! Regards, Ijlal |

ATTN: ALL SERIOUS FISHERMEN Friends, A few words of advice for all serious anglers, especially newly registered ones on this forum: People like Angler15 and Jess strive only on their negativity, and this has been a feature all along. This is a free-for-all forum and none of us own it. You are free to write your comments on anything regarding fishing and so am I. Our posts do not make us know-it-alls or know-nothings! I can reply to these negative people but will not respond to their jealousy, as I feel ignoring them is the best policy. Let's not give them the attention they strive for but cannot get through positive suggestion. Just my two cents... Cheers, Ijlal |

Greetings People, I believe we are here to discuss fishing and we better stick to it. Ijaz I hope this was not intentional, but try and keep it clean duh. Casper thanks for taking it sportingly. Guys you know very well Osama bin laden got pissed off and blew up the twin towers, bush got pissed off and started bombing the gulf. So you see getting pissed off is kinda dangerous, instead post some off your experiences and better things there of. Casper managed to bag some good catch, I am delighted coz its my first time fishing in dubai with a fishing rod. I have done a lot of fishing but it was totally primitive types and really wish to get better in what I do. the bartail flathead (thankx angler14)that I caught was my first catch in the UAE . I wish to join you guys and perhaps you can help me polish my fishing habits. Expecting someone to help me?? Anyone there who will be glad to invite me fishing and answer my rookie ?'s ????? |

Angler14, Now you say you're for C&R, now you're talking about a 'truckload' of fish! Is this not hypocricy? I don't remember you ever reporting a catch on the forum or ever guiding a newbie towards becoming a better fisherman. Yet the only thing you strive on is criticism for the sake of criticism. I don't mind as people like you add colour and spice to the forum, but do sometimes wonder if you are one of the others by another name? As such, you cannot post any reports or interact with anyone lest you might be recognized? Listen buddy (I do not call anybody names,) the number of fish you catch on a particular day depends on many factors and does not necessarily point to how good or bad a fisherman you are. If three of us caught seven tunnies in awful heat, doesn't really indicate anything negative, does it? I am not a hypocrite, and do say only what I feel should be, irrespective of if it pleases somebody or not. A person who could not identify a 'cuda has to be green, and that person should not go after big game unless he has had some experience with the lesser game fish. This was the best advice I could give a newbie to boost his learning curve. If you think the best advice is to push a rookie to go for the kill, by all means do so. Hope we'll see something positive from your side, too. Regards, Ijlal |

Syed, How do you know everybody else is green apart from you! Just because you have been to 2 boat trips in UAE. That doesn't prove anything, there alot more guys out there who knows alot more than you, but did they pin you down. I guess they wouldn't be bored, so don't make a fool of yourself. Angler15 |

Hey there Syed. No offense taken dude, having said that, your words would piss people off ! That having said, i was part of a team in False Bay, Capetown last year and we caught the biggest ever black marlin weighing 250 kilos. This came completely as a surprise as it was not even the season for marlins at the time. So .. talking about some real fish .. 250 kilos is real enough dont you think ? I leave again on the 2nd of november to capetown to do some fishing... The only thing is that i dont own a boat here and not very sure of the waters ... so am here to learn like a lot of us. Game fishing is an expensive sport and its not everyday that we get a chance to do it .. but when there's an opportunity, be assured that i'll be there ... So, like i've said in my previous posts, i'm open to any ideas that people have to organize trips etc, so that we can all meet and share experiences and most of all have a blast of a time fishing ! With regards to fishing equipment. I had been to a shop outside Carrefour Citycentre called Al Sayyad. Was longtime ago though. Not too sure if they have some real good stuff there. There's one on the Jumeirah Rd as well just before better homes. They stock good stuff but as u know this one being on the jumeirah rd. they will add a couple of bucks more to it. |

Hi Dave, I have done a lot of trolling back home but only started going out on a boat here recently; once from Dibba and once from Dubai, so I am afraid I may not be able to help you out on the location part. Was planning to go out in Abu Dhabi during Eid holidays but could not find an affordable boat as most were booked in advance. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hello Casper, Thanks for the response mate! I would like to say a few things with no intention of hurting your feelings, but the truth is sometimes harsh so I apologize in advance. You seem green and I would suggest you catch some real fish like big barracudas, kings, queenies and trevally before you start planning for yellowfins and sailfish (I would also add GT's here.) I mean you don't go to Musandam to catch Longtoms (Hound needlefish!) Anyhow, as long as you enjoyed catching them, good for you. Take care, Ijlal |

Hey there Syed. With reference to your questions ... 1. Which place in Musandam did you go? Did you go out of Dibba or Khasab? We went out of Dibba 2. Do you have any photos of the fish you caught that looked like barracuda? If so please upload them somewhere and post the link here. http://s212.photobucket.com/albums/cc249/FisherGhost/?action=view&curr ent=Mussandam188.jpg 3. What form of fishing did you do? Were you trolling or baitfishing? We were Trolling. Had about 6 lines out. All lines had Rapala lures, 2 sinking and 4 floaters. Caught most of the fish on floaters. 4. What was the time you were out at sea? 7am to about 5pm Hope this helps. I wanna do some n ight fishing out in he sea, but need a boat with a fish finder. If anybody has some contacts, do let me know. Casper |

Did you go out of Dibba or Khasab? 2. Do you have any photos of the fish you caught that looked like barracuda? If so please upload them somewhere and post the link here. 3. What form of fishing did you do? Were you trolling or baitfishing? 4. What was the time you were out at sea? Hope you should be able to answer some or all of above. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi Memed/Bart Deira tackle shops are near the library/post office/fire station on Baniyas Street - Sea Star is one, tel 04 225 8000. It's almost impossible to park here though, unless you park in a private car park (10 dibs an hour). Re: sailfish, a lot used to be caught just a couple of years ago out of Dubai. The last I heard none at all were being caught. Many blamed this on the construction of the Palm, etc, but who really knows. |

Hi Dave You can try The Dragon Mall. Although some people say that the stuff there is no-goods, I disagree. 2 yrs back I purchased a trolling rod for AED 70/- from there & it is just fine. Not as good as a PENN, then it is a fraction of the price too. There is no harm in checking it out. Good Luck Regds Owais |

Hey Dave. I'm not aware of a tackle store on SZR. I know of the one's in Deira. There's about 5 of them and the price is quite cheap. Much cheaper than what you'd find on SZR. The Rapala lures cost me AED 18 each. The same stuff sell for about AED 30 in other places ... They have some fantastic equipment there ... its certianly worth a look if you're comin into Dubai. If you need help when you come into Dubai ... give me a shout and i could take you there, a reason to shop for more lures .. :-) Casper 050-5506545 |

Hi Casper yes mate - so close yet so far yesterday - huh well, there's still the 6 Nations! I'm going with my dad's boat in Abu Dhabs this Friday, but definitely up for a trip here in Dubai whenever! Heard there's a tackle shop on Sheikh Zayed (but I must say I'm not the best with orientation) - any idea where that might be? I'd need pointers like 'near that big building' and such...! Sold my gear when I left Mauritius so I've just bought myself a Daiwa 25kg rod from...Carrefour!! Choice there very limited though, and I don't fancy spending Dhs 2,500 on a Penn Senator...Any tips? |

Hey Syed. Yeah it would be great to get out there dude. Infact i'm off to capetown to do some fishing with a few mates of mine. They are experienced fishermen who play with 200 to 250 kg black marlins. Imagine catching one of those .. http://www.bigmarinefish.com/photos_black_marlin_pg1.html I dunno Syed .. i was just floatin an idea. Its open to the forum ... the whole point is to come to a plan, set a date and head out ... i am quite sure about the season though. What season is it here in the Gulf .. where and what time of the year can we get some real action ? Casper |

Richie, You are right about venturing out far into Iranian or Iranian-claimed waters. Desmond's fish has already been identified as a flathead by Angler14, and rightly so. Although, quite ugly and uninviting, these fish are quite good to eat, especially fish of reasonable size. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hello Casper, If you are after sailfish, you can count me in but you will have to arrange the charter with an experienced and reputable captain. A sailfish trip is going to be expensive and nobody would want to throw away their hard-earned cash. By the way, I do not think this is the best time of the year to catch sails; however, do let me know what your plan is, and let's see. Cheers, Ijlal |

Hahahaa ... nice note Rich ... did crack up a giggle with the fan club card ... Rich on a more serious note, do you wanna do a good off shore fishing trip, i wanna go out there and catch some real big one's ; we could do either an early morning one ... 4am to about 8 or 9am .. or do an over nighter ... If we have enough people, we could all pool in, get a boat and get out ther to do some good fishing ... Any ideas fellow anglers ... Sail Fishing maybe .. :-) Casper |

Hi all! Welcome James, Dave, Desmond, Ateef! Re: your qs - tackle shops - scroll down the thread. I and others posted details of a few places in Deira and there is Barracuda in Deira, which has a website: http://barracudadubai.com/index.php, also Knotica on Sheikh Zayed Road, 3rd Interchange...there is also (apparently) a tackle shop in City Centre (sorry, never been, just told about it). Re: licence, it's required anywhere in Dubai - I've never been asked for it myself, but from fellow anglers' stories the Creek is the area most checked. I've never fished there though - hopefully some other forum members will update us. Desmond - thanks for the pics, but still can't make out what fish it is - a real mystery fish!! Casper/Ateef - unfortunately v.busy at the mo, but hope to throw out a lure one day after work from the Sharjah breakwater - it was recomended by a very experienced angler who posts occasionally - if you're up for it, give me a shout! It'll be one day after work from around 4:30pm till dark. Never fished there, but ready to give it a try. Casper, re: your post, there's no need to go out 40/50 miles for kingfish - many are caught much closer to land. When I used to go out on a boat years ago, lots were caught within a km or less from the coast, and some very big ones from the shipping channel (7 kms out from Jebel Ali). If you do go out 60 miles from Dubai, make sure you take your passport and your Ahminejad Fan Club membership form with you! ;-) Best R |

Hi angler14, You got it right sir. It is indeed a bartail flathead. By the way forgive me for that lousy photo as it was not me who clicked that photo and kudos to you for being able to identify that one from a lousy photo. thanks mate. |

Desmond, Thats one lousy photo, but i'm guessin the fish is a bartail flathead. Next time when you want to identify a fish, take a picture of the fish and not the surrounding! |

Hi everyone. I've just arrived in Dubai and after years of fishing freshwater in China and Italy I'm looking to fish Seawater for a while. Do I need a licence even to fish the creek? I'm living on Oud Metha Road just south of the floating bridge. Are ther any good tackle shops around there or where should i go. this looks like a pretty experienced group judging by the posts! I'll look out for the Wolf fish too. |

Hey guys ... Got back from Mussandam late yesterday evening. Had a fantastic day out at the sea ...caught some fish that looks like the baracuda.. its got a long mouth full of teeth that looks just like the baracuda, but the captain told me that its not , they did put up a good fight though ... caught em and released them ... and kept going. I've been told that the best time for fishing in Mussandam is from 4am to about 8 or 9 in the morning. Is anybody interested in going for some real off shore fishing ? I was thinking about 40 to 60 miles off shore... i really wanna catch a yellow fin or a king fish. Let me know if anybod's game . Have a good one guys. Casper |

Hi fellow anglers! Got myself a new fishing kit and since I dont have the fishing license I thought of going to Um Al Quain early morning and managed to bag a few palm size fish and one about a feet long, which I beleive is called a bahar (whats do you call these in english?) The feet long looks like a shark with spikes and has a flat head with both eyes on the top the others were small palm size with 3 stripes on the back? any clues??? I have the pic but wondering where to upload it. DeZZ |

Well, half the world was down the Marina this morning....and the other half watching them! I had a lot of small queenfish (all released), just one or two better sized ones. Everyone else seemed to be floatfishing for half-beaks/garfish - I can't see the appeal personally. I'm afraid to say a lot of these anglers were very messy and left a lot of plastic rubbish, discarded line etc which I cleared up. Discarded nylon line is a hazard for wildlife, particularly birds such as cormorants and herons which often are my only fishing companions on quiet days. I think I'm going to have to find a new fishing spot! Best Richie |

Richie, Good that you mentioned 'rotten bottom'. It never came to my mind when I was writing, probably because I don't use it often but nevertheless, it is a good technique. Cheers, Ijlal |

Hi Vivek thanks for the welcome. I'm keen to make the best out of this fishing trip next weeekend - it's always exciting to go fishing in a new country. Again all tips are most welcome - we're going in our own boat (30ft) with 2 rods to 'test the waters' off Abu Dhabi... |

Hi All - am new to Dubai and mad about fishing, having fished since I was wee lad and wherever I lived (Congo, Bahrain, Mauritius, etc). I'm going trolling in Abu Dhabi next weekend - nothing serious, just 2 rods. It's more like a test really - I'm going with my old man. Any tips? It's our first time fishing in the UAE |

Richie. Thanks a ton for the info. For now i've got the lures, 3 rods, 2 30lbs and 1 80 lbs lines, reels are 25 to 60lbs capacity. Lures are from Rapala, known to be one of the best .. so lets see. About the Marina, great Richie. I'll send you a PM with my numbers and we can keep each other posted on when we could go. Thanks again. Casper |

Hi Vivek/Syed Re: your qs, the half dozen queenfish were all around 1/2 kilo and the barracuda 1.5 kilo - not monsters, but better than the small scad/garfish I had last time. Syed's tips regarding bottom fishing are exactly right. Also, using a rotten bottom (ie, a weaker nylon link to your sinker - be it a lead weight/old spark plug) will minimise your losses. You may get your hook - and fish - back, and just lose the weight in rocky areas. I wish you good luck in Musandam, but sorry can't comment on best methods there - others on the forum have been there before and may be able to help you out...I dive in the area though, and Musandam has tons of fish, much the same as in Dubai waters, but more and bigger!!
