Nice website you have there. Please advise us when would be the best time to catch good sized YFT's? Who knows my buddy and I might go with you at least once. Frankly your rates, though not really too expensive, are a bit out of our budget, so we would like to ensure the greatest probability of getting some nice yellowfins. We would also want to use our own rods, which may not even be as good as you might have, but as a rule, I only fish with my own gear.

Hi Guys,
Just did a trip trolling offshore DXB. It was really very disappointing we trolled for 5hrs just caught 2 medium sized barracuda and a 5 kg kingfish. Well we expected much more than that, guess with all the construcion and high rises coming up even offshore the fish have decided to stay away. Overhear that there have been really good catches offshore on the eastern coast off FUJ & RAK. Well i am def gonna head that way the next time. Hilton RAK & FUJ offer their inhouse guest only a fishing trip for 3 @ 250 per head or 750 for the boat all tackle incld. I think that sounds good better than the exhorbitant prices this side of town.

I use different types of chumming for different type of fish.
I start by saving any left overs baits from previous trips, the left overs of my catch when I fillet them.
I use something like this in the link:

to grind my chum and place it in plastic bags and freeze it (normally 2LB bags), once I need to chum, I take it out of the bag and place it in a mesh bag with some wieght and drop it to the desired depth. This with attract the smaller fish, once there's a feeding frenzy, I'll start throughing bigger peices of bait fish and then my hooked bait.
But you have to be careful not to over feed the fish as they won't bite.
as for where I fish, all over UAE, where ever my work takes me. I live in the US and travel a lot to UAE. If I am staying more than a week, I'll bring my gear with me. It's only $100 per extra bag. |

I don't think you will be able to find the quality you are looking for. Better to order one from one of the better online stores. I am not sure about the UK but Cabelas, Basspro Shops and Tackle Direct are good US online shops to order from. I also feel the tackle prices in the US are cheaper than UK. If you are looking for top quality stuff (since you mentioned Conoflex and Zziplex) then try taking a look at G. Loomis, Lamiglas, St. Croix and Breakaway. The downside of ordering a $300+ rod online is the shipping; while a 12ft Lami would have similar dimensions to a $100.00 and probably weigh less, you would be paying 40% of the rod value in freight and you end up paying much more on the more expensive rod. Unless your primary aim is tournament casting, I would suggest to limit yourself to the likes of Penn Pro Guide (around $ 150.00). Basspro have their own brand Ocean Master (OM12..) for $119.00, which is highly rated by US East Coast surfcasters. The Saltigas you have mentioned are also an excellent choice but on the higher side.
As for the Bass you have in UK it belongs to the family Moronidae and no species of this family are found here. We do have another family of Sea Basses known as Serranidae, which includes the famous Hamour (Grouper).

Got a question about how u chum... I take it you guys use a chum bag of some sort? Or do you just chum by throwing bits of fish in the water to attract the predators?

2: surf/beachcaster 3: No Limit as long as its good quality and is suitable to my casting style. Needs to be fast taper action and guides for multiplier. Needs to be suitable for my 6500CT. Not really in to floppy euro or USA stuff. I guess im looking for what im used to in the UK.....Zziplex or Conoflex. I have seen the Daiwa Saltigo range, they seem ok, are they availiable in UAE?

Hi Dave,
The best way to catch more fish when you see a bait ball in the water is either to troll around it with lures just below the surface. Never never steer your boat into the bait ball, as that will lower much lower your chances of catching fish.
The otherway is to cast on the side of the bait ball. If you can see the direction of which the bait ball is heading, cast into that direction and then reel back but dont go through the bait ball.
You can use either natrual or artificial both work well depends of the size of the bait ball and what are you using for bait.
The otherway is to Chum them to the point of which you hand pick the fish you want to catch. This tech i use for Dolphin and Cobia, get them to the boat and then focus on the biggest one and booooooooom fish on.
also, it's always handy to keep a spinning outfit ready by your side in case of a target pops up in view. this in case you dont want to use a casting outfit.

Regarding the location, its actually quite simple. Put yourself in line with the channel that heads out of Mina Zayed. Go past the first 3 or 4 sets of beacons (I can't remember the exact number) and then hear North East for about a mile or so. The depth changes from 60ft to about 20ft-25ft - it's slightly outside the channel.
I'm sorry I don't remember the exact coordinates - it's in the GPS - but I'll try to remember to get them out next time. |

Hello Dave,
Congratulations on your first and successful trip out of UAE. Next time you see tuna in action try trolling feathered jigs and small soft head skirts. When you are able to see fish feed on the surface you would require top water lures and in sizes to match the baitfish they are feeding upon. Another tip is not to go directly into the feeding fish but troll around the edges of the bait congregations, as many a times the presence of a boat would disturb the feeding fish and put them off. Also when you are not getting a strike, wait for the bait to sound. As soon as the bait disappears from within easy reach of the predators, they will most of the time be on the lookout for easy prey, being in the feeding frenzy they have been, and you will tend to get more strikes during the following 10-15 minutes.
Lastly, is it possible to divulge the coordinates of the place you were getting many strikes at? If you want to keep that place a secret no problem, but considering there are so few Abu Dhabi anglers on this forum and even fewer who might actually make use of that spot, it shouldn't really hurt to make the place public.

Hi Casper,
The brace of kingfish we caught were not hard fighters but clever fighters, wriggling about to get the rapala off, 'playing dead' near the boat and then darting down again. Clever use of the reel was the key. One was about 2kg and the other about 3kg. I find it a very good fish to catch in that it teaches you to control your reel action properly. If I catch a smaller one next time I intend to try to use it as live bait and aim for big 'cudas or, if I'm lucky, a shark. If I'm VERY lucky perhaps a sailfish...who knows right? |

Welcome to the forum! Before one can answer your question kindly be specific: 1. Are you in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, 2. Are you looking for a conventional or spinning surf rod. 3. what is your budget. If you are looking for a conventional, the answer is if you do find one it will be very expensive. The only store here in Abu Dhabi that has a few is selling at almost double the price they should be.

Hi all,
Shahzad and I also went fishing on Friday night. Nothing during the night... shifted to another location around 4:30 am, action started at first hint of light. caught some nice table fish, though nothing big; biggest one being 2 kg barracuda. To summarize, 3 Naqroor (Silver Grunts) of which 2 around a kilo each, 2 good sized flatheads at least 1 kg each, one yellowfin Seabream around 0.75 to 1.0 kg and one Goldlined seabream 0.5-0.6 kg. Also caught a few other smaller fish that we let go. All in all it was fun - The weather was a bit chilly toward the morning, though.

Hey there Dave. Well done on the king fish. I think november is going to be the best time for king fish. Something that i think is useful while trolling is the use of chum. I think one of the other very good techniques is the use of live bait fish ... if we can catch them first.
The fish i caught at Mamzar was the small scaled terapon. Didn't have a camera, but have a pic on my mobile phone.

Yup sounds like a typical frustrating day when you have the fish around u but u cant get many hits... I dont know why but the fish seem very reluctant to go for lures like rapala etc when their chasing bait fish over here. I think the best thing to do is to use small lures which mimic the size of the bait fish. I can also suggest casting or trolling some sabiki (faether hooks) as they work great on the mackrel/tuna/ jack like species which often chase the bait fish. Ur most likely not to get any monsters but its great fun all the same!

thats a link that should give u some advice on rigging ballyhoo. if u just google it there a re loads of sites about it because every1 seems to have their own special way of doing things. takes some practice and id recomend u order some ready ballyhoo rigging kits from one of the american online fishing stores! best way to start unles u have some1 in abu dhabi show you how to do it first hand! im no expert at it myself haha.
id also suggest u try some casting/spinning with lures or dead/live bait around the bait fish instead of trolling... for some reason it tends to bring better results. but once again that can differ from a day to day basis! give it a go anyway and see what works in abu dhabi! |

Forgot to say we were using 2 trolling lines. One of those is a Daiwa 24kg rod with a Mitchell reel and local line which I bought in Carrefour!
I have to say I was highly impressed with it considering it was bought whithin very limited choice at Carrefour. The other line is a more serious trolling rod with Penn Senator reel which we bought in Mauritius about 6 years ago. |

Thank you very much for the tips regarding the schools of bait fish. I couldn't really tell what those were but in a general sense they looked like sardines. They were indeed chased to the surface by bigger fish, I think I spotted a few 'cudas, some kingfish, and many yellow-tailed (semi-circular in chape) fish which I'm guessing are tunas.
It was immensely frustrating to not get a decent strike with so many fish present all around our boat. I have to admit I've not used poppers before, and I haven't used live bait in the Gulf either - more information as to how to rig those up is most welcome!  |

I had been to Creek Park for a picnic with my Family and Friends, even did fishing, just got thru’ with few Catfish (small ones though), using Squid as bait, but overall had a nice day. In the evening I could see around 6-8 of them fishing under the Gharood bridge.

Hey Dave,
Congratulations! Getting a couple of kings on your first outting is def a great result! The waters here are realy unique as you found out so sometimes people find it difficult to addapt even if they have experience from elsewhere.
As far as the schools of fish are concerned ive found mixed results while fishing near them... as you said in other parts of the world big schools of bait fish means guaranteed strikes. Did you see what fish they were? and where there any predators chasing them to the surface? What ive found to work best is to troll near the baitfish and not neccessarily through the centre, using small surface lures like poppers or even trolling some dead bait (like ballyhoo) behind some teasers... results vary from day to day ranging from 2-3kg tuna or barracude to 30kg kingfish! how many rods were u guys using?
As far as getting ur lines cut by the other boats... that happens here specially by 'sunday' boaters who only go out to show their friends they have a boat.they dnt really know what their doing so you cant expect much more to be honest! If you go out a couple of times ull see the regulars tend to know what their doing and fishing with a couple of boats in the same area is possible!
sorry i cant help u with fishing spots in abu dhabi as in dubai based but u seem to be doing a good job anyway! next time try post some photos! |

Hi all,
So I went out trolling on Friday to test the waters off of Abu Dhabi. We left the British Club around 11am and got back around 6pm.
We went straight out about 8 miles N/NW of Mina Zayed.
Good day generally, bagged a couple of Kingfish.
It wasn't bad considering we were testing our gear, and adapting from what we used in Mauritius (plastic squid lures) to rapalas of various sizes (till we found the right ones).
There were many birds in feeding frenzy over schools of smaller fish, which inevitably attracted bigger fish. Despite going 'through the schools' several times with various types of tackle we only got a weak strike and nothing more in that area. We found this to be particularly bizarre - the main technique in Mauritius being to go straight for birds and 'pass through' (with usually 90% success rate). Clearly Gulf waters are different.
An unpleasant part of the day was when another boat deliberately went straight through my line, cutting off my rig and my rapala with it. No apologies given. I guess good manners are quite rare.
In the end we found a very good spot, with many strikes, some decent Kingfish, but we had to leave as the sun was going down fast. I have marked the spot on my GPS and will definitely go back.
If anyone has better spots for trolling in Abu Dhabi, please let me know!

Dibba Rock (off the Holiday Beach Motel), Sharm Rocks (just south) and Snoopy Rock (off the Sandy Beach Hotel)are all small islands in Marine Reserves and no fishing is allowed. Around Dibba Rock, white buoys delineate the 'no fishing' Marine Reserve area. There are also no fishing signs on sections of the beach here - at Dibba around the HBM, and at Sandy Beach Hotel area.

Hey Bart,
As good as I can remember, fishing at Khorfakkan along the beach is prohibited. It is a marine reserve and probably you can see 'no fishing' boards at a couple of places. However, you can fish at Fujairah and towards Dibba.....
haven't been there for ages now....

Don't expect our new friend Hamed to tell you where to get the reel for $39.99. I did a thorough search and could not find that price. I did find the figure though but it was GBP 39.99. Please note Great Britain Pound at British stores! $59.99 is the cheapest price anywhere online and though reputable stores such as Cabelas and BPS do charge steeply on shipping, you wouldn't want to risk using your credit card on just any site and also not risk losing the shipment on the way. Furthermore, most of the stores do not ship to U.A.E.
Although Hamed did the damage by planting the seed of doubt in others minds, I wasn't really looking forward to any forum members to buy the reel in order to support me, but just wanted everybody know a certain item was available. You know how difficult it is to get good stuff over here, and the only store that has this reel in Abu Dhabi is selling it for or over AED 550.00
In the end I would like to once again thank my friends Rami and Jess for realizing the folly of the negative email and coming forward to my support, and as they have suggested, I will keep the reel for myself, so guys, sorry, but the deal is off!

Hi guys - noted and I agree with the 'rapala knot'. However i haven't been able to find big enough crimps in time and as such I've attached the snap-swivel directly to the rapala mouth (not the long plastic tongue).
I use various sizes, ranging from 5'' to 8''. I normally choose 'deep divers'. I guess I'll have to try and find some crimps somehow before I head out...although it did work in Mauritius with the snap-swivel direct attachment. |

Considering the toothy critters such as barracuda and narrow-barred mackerel (kingfish), we always use a short wire trace attached to a swivel on one end and either crimped around the ring on the lure or to a snap, depending on the action of the lure.

Hey there Dave. It actually depends on where the ring on the rapala is. If the ring is on the tip of the rapala mouth, then you will need the rapala knot. This holds true for most 1 to 6 ft rapala. If the ring on the rapala is on the beak ( the plastic bit ), then the clinch know would do. Its not advisable to attach a snap swivel to the rapala, coz it adds to the weight of the lure itself and fails the purpose. The Rapala know enables the lure to mimic an actual fish itself. What Rapala Lure do you have Dave ?

Thanks for the support. I also have Daiwa Eliminator but a 13 feet one and just love the rod! For the price, I don't think any other rod can beat an Eliminator.

Yes, one heck of a reel. I have the 5500 which I use only for surfcasting, good handling and good drag.....landed many 10 to 15 pound with this one without any retrival problems except I feel that the the handle a little long. Nevertheless, a great range of affordable reels from Daiwa.
With a reduced forum special price and the line thrown in guess it is a good buy unless you want the 4500 which handles better.

Ijlal, This one heck of a reel. I have the 6000 one and mounted on 10 ft daiwa eleminator with a 40lb power pro line.
This reel took some hard punishments and long runs. I recommend this reel for long distance casting, but the only down side to it, it's a little pit heavy wish had went with a smaller one like the 4500. other than that. very well made reel. |
