I will be in Punta Arenas, costa rica in Oct. looking for fishing info, guides, charters etc. Would like to do some rooster fishing but will consider other fishing. Will charters group people to share costs? This will be a cruise excursion, I have from 7am to 7pm. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am more interested in fishing rather than accomodations. anything to keep the cost down.

Thanks

Jan 29 we fished with a new boat here in Quepos and the Marlin and Sailfish were jumping everywhere out there. I have not ever seen so many marlin at this time of year. The waters are renownedly calm and it looks like glass offshore. Fishing has been about 20-25 miles out. Clients fishing Reel Deal on the 28th released a Marlin and 4 Sails. Steve Smith and crew on Pez Espada released a Marlin and a Sailfish. On the 27th clients Rick Davies and Claude Christiano on Pez Espada released a Marlin and a Sailfish while the Smith group on Wahoo had 2 Sailfish and some nice sized Mahi Mahi. Hope the fishing stays like this. Just about every boat in the fleet out all this week.
The Annual Harry Gray Fly Fishing Tournament took place the last week of January with 62 Total Fish on the Fly. Frenzy placed 1st with 16 Total. Sea Lady placed 2nd with 12 Total, Moonwalker 3rd with 10, Golfito Sail #4 with 7 and Gran Lucas with 6

Detailed January fishing report from the Estrella de Mar, Quepos Costa Rica

January 6
Our clients from Michigan had an outstanding day of offshore fishing raising 11 sailfish, catching and releasing 8, they also raised 6 tuna, and 4 bull dorado.

January 7
The guys from Michigan returned for another day of fishing and reported 7 sailfish caught and released along with 8 dorado.

January 8
Trying their hand inshore for half the day, the guys from Michigan brought in 3 large roosterfish, and a mid-sized snapper before heading offshore to land 3 more sailfish and 2 more dorado.

I guess anglers from Michigan know how to read the moon charts!

January 10
Our friends from Washington were not us lucky with the moon. On a day which everyone in Quepos agreed was slow, our clients were able to raise 4 sails, landing 2, and 2 large dorado. They were also chasing Tuna in a pod of dolphin that must have numbered 500. It was a beautiful site to see.

January 14
Our clients from Toronto, left the cold weather behind and fished from sunny Quepos aboard the Estrella de Mar. Captain Jesus reports 14 sailfish raised with 9 caught and released. It was another great day for the Dorado. 7 Dorado were caught and released, two bull dorado in the 40 pound range among them.

January 19
Today's fishermen reported a great day aboard the Estrella de Mar. Seven sailfish were raised five of which were landed by our 4 anglers from Chicago. They also report a strong dorado bite, catching and releasing 4 dorado from 20 to 30 pounds.

January 21
The Bivens of Annapolis fished aboard the Estrella de Mar for a full day offshore. Captain Jesus report 6 Sailfish raised and a strong Tuna bite. At one point all three fishermen were fighting tuna. The final tally for the day was 4 Sails, 3 Dorado, and 2 tuna caught and released.

Fishing report from gulf of Papagayo and Tamarindo beach, on last October, 2008.
Check the Guanacaste fishing charters, reports.

- October 30, 2008
We have had some inshore fishing here in Papagayo, LA CHILA, CORMORAN and the ALBATRES boat have been fishing lately with some success for species like dorado, rooster, yellowfin tuna, jurel and others inshore species.
Right now, we have a nice weather in the gulf, transition from rainy season to dry season. There are occasional showers after noon, after 3 or 4 pm, however the dry season is here, you can feel it with some hotter days and some cold winds from north, so showers will disappear within few days.
Weather for fishing is really nice with sunny morning and cloudy afternoons, no rough sea at all and fishes waiting to be caught!!!.

- October 23, 2008
Right now we have rainy season normal conditions, you could expect sunny morning and some showers after noon.
Jonathan Lanmer and his wife, from the Hilton Papagayo resort fishing on the LA CHILA-G boat, caught 2 dorados, one roosterfish, one hamberjack 2 Jack Jurel and some bonitos fishing in the Bat islands.

- October 14, 2008
Weather has been rainy lately, due the many storms and hurricanes in both Caribe and Pacific oceans. It is a normal situation on Octuber (the most rainy month), the weather will has a dramatic change begining November.
Today, Jhon Guzzo, fishing out from the Grand Papagayo resort, on the Cormoran boat caught 11 dorados.

Los Suenos Costa Rica X-Treme Team Fishing Report- The crew aboard the Bethina - Los Suenos Costa Rica Does it again!

July 28 - 2008 -Our Los Suenos X-Treme Billfish Team Boat the Bethina, delivers another banner day!

Bethina Collects the Bills!

Lines Up and Hats off to Capt. Glen, and his amazing mates, Min & Russ for once again living up to their reputation as the Los Suenos Costa Rica X-Treme Billfish Team!

This top producing team delivered our guests a phenominal day of fishing today offshore, and in the middle of our slow fishing season to boot. Capt. Glen ran fast, hard, and far until he found several schools of trophy Sailfish. With the help of precision manuevering and his 2 A-Team mates rigging and presentation expertise, our guests released 4 Sailfish over 120lbs each, and raised 4 more, again making Bethina the High Hook boat for the day, out all other boats that fished today.

The day was capped off by a nice Bull Mahi-Mahi in the 30lb range. The guests and Capt. Glen reported seeing several more Sailfish on the surface, that would not even touch a live bait, let alone a trolled Ballyhoo. Even so, they managed an 8 Sail day, at a time of year that the Sailfish bite is very slow.

As usual, we greeted our guests at the dock upon their return to ask how their day went aboard Bethina. It was no surprise to hear them all say

" That was the best run fishing charter we have ever been on! Those guys worked their tails off to make it happen for us out there and are no doubt on top of their game!"

We are proud to have the Bethina and her award winning Captain and Crew as part of the Hooked On Costa Rica Fleet. If you want to expereince a day of hard core, adrenaline pumping, drag screaming, high energy X-Treme Billfishing....

Contact Us today and find out how you can get aboard the official Hooked on Costa Rica X-Treme Billfish Team boat for the absolute best fishing experience in Costa Rica. www.HookedOnCostaRica.com the #1 Los Suenos Fishing & Travel outfitter.

May Fishing Report

May is a transition month for the weather in Costa Rica and the last week in May proved it. The first three weeks of the month started out like April ended. The bite was average with most boats catching a few sailfish, a few mahi mahi and maybe even getting a shot at a marlin or tuna.

But then the rains came and kept almost everyone from fishing the final week of May. The storms pounded the fleet in Quepos sinking a dozen boats. Some of the nicest boats in Quepos were no match for Mother Nature.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” had a great day with 4 Sailfish, a Stripe Marlin, a Blue Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and a Dorado….That’s a super slam in CR I think. Then today they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado….they were fishing out by the craters.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” Caught 2 Sailfish, a Striped Marlin a few Tuna and a Dorado.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and three 50 pound Dorados.

Captain Dana on the “Hoos your Daddy” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, several Yellowfin and a couple Dorado.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a half day trip about 15 miles out and caught 4 Dorado…a couple 30 pounds and a couple 20 pounds.

Captain RJ ran the “Tres Amigos” and caught 7 Sailfish and a couple Dorado.

The guys on the “Dream 2″ caught a big big Yellowfin Tuna…rumored over 200 pounds.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” caught 2 Sailfish and 2 Mahi Mahi.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took Dave the dental patient out for a day in the rain…they did catch a couple sailfish and a few dorado.

June Fish Forecast --

Look for June to be similar to the first 3 weeks of May. It will probably take a week or two for the water to clean up but the guys that do go out will continue to average a few Sailfish, some dorado, some tuna and maybe a marlin if there karma is good.

They boats may need to run farther until the chocolate brown water disappears…look for the bite to past 30 miles.

June Fish of the Month – Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Dolphin fish

Over the next few months there will be lots of Dorado caught on the Pacific coast. With the rains comes the debris washes out into the ocean. In time this debris acts as cover and attracts game fish. Dorado from 5 to 75 pounds can be found in and around floating logs, cargo nets and trash lines.

Where there is one Dorado there are usually more. It’s not uncommon to catch a dozen fish if you get into a good bunch. The big ones run in smaller groups usually a big bull Dorado with a couple of lady friends.

Dorado are great fighters and lots of fun to catch. If you’ve never been out fishing or want to fish on a budget now is the time to get out for a half day of Dorado fishing. Grab a few friends and go fishing…prices start at $450 and include drinks and snacks.

The best part of Dorado fishing is having a fish taco night with your fresh caught Mahi Mahi….mmmmm….delicious.

Good Luck and Good Fishing,

Bubba

Hola,

The fishing the past few days has been nice mixed bag. The Sailfish bite has slowed a little but everything else has picked up. The Marlin bite is good for both Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin. The Yellowfin Tuna bite has picked up with lots of boats reporting a few 30 pound fish. The Dorado bite has also been good…with some big ones reported.

Most of the boats were fishing 25-30 miles out around the craters.

Thanks for your time,

Bubba

April Fishing Report

April started out as March ended…HOT, HOT, HOT. Everyone was fishing about 30 miles out and they were raising and releasing double digit Sailfish numbers…mixed in with a few Dorado.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 16 for 22 on Sailfish and had 5 Sailfish and a Dorado hooked up at the same time…a sixer?

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took Lou and his buddy out again today the clients hooked their own fish and they ripped it up going 15 for 30 on Sailfish with a couple big Dorado for dinner.

The second week of April the bite shifted far to the south and guys were running 40-45 miles and crushing it.

The guys on the “Spanish Fly” took a crew from Michigan out and in true “Spanish Fly” fashion released 24 Sailfish and a Marlin.

Bob from Jersey wanted to hook his own fish on the “Fish Whistle”…Captain Brandon did not disappoint. They went south and Bob went 7 for 15 on Sailfish and caught a 50 pound Bull Dorado. Bob admitted that fishing with the circle hooks was something new. It’s hard to undo years of hook setting instinct.

There were one or two slow days around the middle of the month and then bite picked up again but this time just 30 miles out. The bite continued to be good until the very end of the month. The last few days of the month were slow…but the fish are still out there.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 8 for 14 on Sailfish about 30 some miles South.

Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” went 7 for 20 on Sails with a couple 30 pound Dorado and a nice Striped Marlin.

Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” may have the catch of the week…maybe even month with a 750 plus pound Black Marlin. Tim and the buys were fishing the “26″ when the hawg came tight. They estimated the fish at 17 plus feet. The “26″ area has a history of big Blacks…this is one more for the list.

Captain George on the “Barrilata” went out about 30 miles with Mike and his wife from North Carolina. They caught 2 Sailfish, a “3 foot long” Mahi Mahi and a 300 pound Black Marlin…not bad for some panga guys. Mike said a 20 inch Grouper was the largest fish he has ever caught. Mike was very very happy, showing everyone in the hotel lobby his photos…he admitted that Marlin whooped his ass.

May Fish Forecast --

Look for May will be similar to April. The Sailfish are still around. The boats will run a little farther and fish a little harder and catch fewer fish.

The good news is mixed in with those fewer Sailfish bites will be more Marlin, Tuna and big Dorado.

April Fish of the Month – Sailfish

Public pressure is helping to save the Dolphins and Turtles. We need to use public pressure to help save the Sailfish and Marlin…PLEASE HELP.

1.2 million pounds of Sailfish and Marlin was processed though Costa Rica fish wholesalers in 2006.
Now there is a group in Costa Rica that wants to allow commercial fishing boats to kill more Sailfish and Marlin.

We need people to speak out and send a fax to the President of Costa Rica.

Please take 5 minutes and send a fax encouraging the Costa Rican President to prohibit the commercial fishing of Sailfish and Marlin.

Hola,

A couple days after the full moon and the bite is still good out of the Los Suenos Marina. The bite moved out some so the guys are having to run a little farther…about 40 miles yesterday. Everyone is catching fish and it’s been a mixed bag of mainly Sailfish with a few Marlin and Mahi Mahi.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 8 for 12 with the James B. party fishing 40 miles out. I think they were all Sailfish Virgins…not any more. They are fishing with Bill again on the 24th…go get em boys.

Captain Jeremy took Willis and some friends out offshore…they had a OK day. They released 2 Sailfish but lost 3 more Sails, a big Mahi Mahi and a Marlin. Ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” released 7 Sailfish lost a nice Mahi Mahi and raised a little Blue or Striped Marlin.

Thanks

The bite out of the Los Suenos Marina has slowed to some average numbers. A week ago the bite was out west and then a few days ago it moved to the south and now it seems to be scattered. For the past two days most of the boats have been running 30 and 40 miles but not pulling the huge Sailfish numbers that we have had the past month. Most of the boats today seemed to run hard and slug it out for 2 or 3 fish.

Yesterday Captain Carlos on the “R&J” took Brain and his buddy offshore and caught 3 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi and a Marlin.

Yesterday Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” pulled 3 deuces with 2 Sailfish, 2 Mahi Mahi and 2 Striped Marlin over 200 pounds. Today they took Steve and his buddies out and went 1 for 7 on Sailfish. The Captain went 42 miles and fished hard for those fish…sometimes they bite aggressively and sometimes they don’t.

Yesterday Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” released 8 Sailfish and kept a 45 pound Dorado for the grill. Today Captain Bill went 5 for 8 on Sailfish…he was out about 40 miles.

When the bite is 40 miles out the half day charters are forced to fish inshore. The Inshore Fishing has been good the past week…with everyone catching some Roosterfish mixed in with some Amber Jacks, Cubera Snapper and Grouper.

Thanks for your time,

Bubba

Hola,

The Sailfish bite is HOT, HOT , HOT out of the Los Suenos Marina. Everyone is fishing 25-35 miles out and almost everyone is releasing double digit numbers on Sailfish while adding a Dorado or two.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 16 for 22 on Sailfish and had 5 Sailfish and a Dorado hooked up at the same time…a sixer? This is a photo of Steve’s MONSTER Sailfish. Captain Bill says 11 foot long and over 180 pounds…and Bill would know.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took Lou and his buddy out again today the clients hooked their own fish and they ripped it up going 15 for 30 on Sailfish with a couple big Dorado for dinner.

Howdy,

March Fishing Report

You can now get daily fishing reports at my new website
www.CostaRicaFishingReport.com

The fishing in March was incredible. The month started with a solid Sailfish bite 15-20 miles out in front of Jaco. All the boats were catching 7-10 Sailfish and lots of delicious Dorado.

From March 13-15th was the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Tournament. Congrats to the guys on the “Muy Caliente” for taking first place with 4 Marlin and 23 Sailfish in the 3 day event…pretty good for a 31 foot boat in a tournament with lots of big boats. The “Spanish Fly” was 2nd place and the big “Missbehavin” finished third.

The Sailfish bite exploded following the full moon with everyone catching double digit Sailfish just 20 – 30 miles out. The Dorado bite dropped off a bit but when your catching 12 -28 Sailfish a day who cares.

The month ended with a big Marlin bite. It seemed like everyone I talked to raised Marlin and several boats had multiple hook ups and multiple Marlin releases just 20- 30 miles out. Boats were averaging 3 to 5 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi or two and a Blue, Black or Striped Marlin sighting.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” caught 10 Sailfish and a 450 pound Blue Marlin on St Patty’s Day. Captain Bill later went 12 for 20 on Sails one day and 22 for 33 the next. Bill ended the month with 4 Sails and a 500 pound Black down by the pocket.

Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 19 for 26 on Sailfish and had a couple nice Mahi Mahi. Towards the end of the month he caught a Striped Marlin, 4 Sailfish and a 50 pound Bull Dorado with a lucky couple from Florida.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took a family from Pensacola fishing and they went 5 for 9 on Sailfish. Everyone on the boat caught their first Sailfish…congrats.

Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” released 15 Sailfish with the Mike Horn party. Mike had a great time and sends his thanks to Jeremy and the crew. Toward the end of the month Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” caught a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, 2 Dorado and 2 Sailfish.

RJ fished with the guys on the “Iron Trader” and released 3 Marlin, a few Sails and a couple Dorado.

Captain Roberto recently went to secret spot and caught 2 huge Broom tail Groupers…using butterfly jigs.

Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” caught a couple Marlin, five Sailfish and a few Dorado.

April Fish Forecast --

Hopefully the big Sailfish numbers will continue through April. Sailfish is our most important fish and we need another great month.

The Marlin fishing will get most of the attention just because the guys caught so many Sailfish last month that they are ready for something new. The Striped Marlin bite will continue to be above average.

There will also be lots of big Dorado and Tuna caught by boats going offshore for Sailfish and Marlin.

April Fish of the Month – Sailfish

The Sailfish and Marlin bite made thousands of tourists happy in March. Those happy people will go home and tell everyone how great the fishing is in Costa Rica. Healthy Sailfish and Marlin populations are important to the future of Costa Rica.

PLEASE DON’T EAT WHITE MARLIN AND SAILFISH

What’s in your ceviche?

Good Luck and Good Fishing,

Bubba

The bite here out of Los Suenos Costa Rica continues to offer the absolute best trophy Sailfishing in the country. Los Suenos is globally known as the Fishing Capital of Costa Rica, and maintains it's place as the #1 choice for the traveling angler.

Our boats have been raising tremendous numbers of Sailfish, as well as trophy Mahi-Mahi in the 35-60lb range, quite a few Striped, Black and Blue Marlin, and some nice yellowfin Tuna. Because of it's central location, Los Suenos anglers are afforded the opportunity to cover much more territory to the North and Southm than it's Southerly or Northerly neighbors.

With it's tremendous nightlife, superieor fishing, incredible selection of accomodations, restaurants, shopping, and all modern convieniences, it's no wonder why more people fish and stay here than any other part of the country... With 20 years in theSport fishing & Hospitality business, We could have set up operations anywhere in Costa Rica... and it's why we are HERE.

For those interesting in Fishing and expereinceing Costa Rica, the Los Suenos region is certainly the wise choice.. Pura Vida

Hola,

The fishing just got better out of the Los Suenos Marina. The reports of raising 40 fish were confirmed. It seems that the guys on the Desperado released 28 some Sailfish out by the craters.

The word on the street today was about the Marlin bite. Lots of boats picking up Striped and Blue Marlin less than 25 miles out. We have gone a month without a big Marlin bite…but today things changed.

Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” caught a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, 2 Dorado and 2 Sailfish.

Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” caught a Striped Marlin, 4 Sailfish and a 50 pound Bull Dorado. His clients wanted to jump in the water at the end of the day. Dana had pull everything in but one ballyhoo. While his customers were swimming Captain Dana’s line came tight and he hooked up a big Sailfish. The couple quickly slid through the transom door like a couple of seals ad landed the fish.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” banged them out going 12 for 20 on Sails today and 22 for 33 yesterday. He was anxious to chase the Marlin bite tommorow.

Captain RJ fished with the guys on the “Iron Lady” and released 3 Marlin, a few Sails and a couple Dorado.

Thanks,

The Sailfish bite out of the Los Suenos Marina continues to be solid even with the full moon. The fish seemed to have moved to the west and the bite was anywhere between 20-30 miles out and everyone was catching Sailfish. There were some Mahi Mahi and Marlin bites as well…lots of guys were looking for the Yellowfin Tuna but no luck.

Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 9 for 12 on Sailfish and had a couple nice Mahi Mahi.

Captain Jerry on the “Estrella del Mar” released 5 Sailfish while fishing with Jonathon’s group.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took a family from Pensacola fishing and they went 5 for 9 on Sailfish. Everyone on the boat caught their first Sailfish…congrats.

Thanks for your time,

Bubba

Hola,

There was a short lull after the 3 day contest…lots of boats took Sunday and Monday off. The boats that did go out continue to catch good numbers of Sailfish and Dorado.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” caught 10 Sailfish and a 450 pound Blue Marlin today.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” fished the 26 and caught 6 nice Snapper.

Captain Dave on “Missbehavin” fished a half day and released 4 Sailfish.

Don from Jacksonville went out with the guys on the “Terry Lee” and caught 4 Sailfish and 3 Mahi Mahi on a half day trip.

Thanks for your time,

Bubba

A month ago a guy from Atlanta sent me a email about fishing…he ended his letter like this:

Sincerely,
Greg Groover (a person who badly wants to catch a sailfish)

He wasn’t greedy, he didn’t ask for 10 Sailfish, a Marlin, some Tuna, a few Dorado, a Wahoo and a Roosterfish all on a half day trip like some people do. He was just a person that badly wants to catch a Sailfish…just one.

I’m happy to report Mr. Groover and his folks went 2 for 4 on Sailfish on a half day trip on the “Scorpion”. He called me after the trip and I could hear the excitement and happiness in his voice.

I almost forgot what it was like to catch the first Sailfish. I grew up in Nebraska where a big fish was a 10 pound Carp so when I caught my first Sailfish in Quepos in 1998 I was instantly hooked. I went home and within a year sold everything I had, left a good job and took a chance on Costa Rica.

Ten years later and there have been some good times and there have been some bad times but I’ve caught hundreds of Sailfish and I’ve help hundreds of friends and tourist catch Sailfish…I love this country and I love my job.

To say that one Sailfish in Quepos back in 1998 changed my life is a understatement. Will it have the same effect on Mr. Groover? Will he sell everything he has and move down here because Costa Rica has great fishing and beautiful women? Probably not, but I hope he at least reads this and sends6 me some photos of his first Sailfish and I hope he visits Costa Rica again.

Congrats Greg…and thanks for the reminder.

The Sailfish bite is so good I think the captains and crew are starting to get bored with it. Usually if someone catches 10 sailfish I get a call and a fresh fish report…but when everyone is catching 10 fish it’s no big deal and nobody calls.

Everyone going out is catching fish…the number of fish caught ranges from 4 to 14 Sails and a Dorado or two. Not many Marlin or Tuna being caught.

Captain Dave and his group on the “Missbehavin” released 6 Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado for the grill. Dave also reported seeing one Marlin.

I cna't seem to figure out how to load photos on this site so check out Daves Dorado at:

http://www.costaricafishingreport.com/

It's taller than he is.

Thanks,

Bubba

The fishing report for offshore reads like a carbon copy of the past few days. The Sailfish bite is still booming 15-25 miles offshore. There’s 30-40 boats going out everyday and almost all of them are catching double digit Sailfish and a couple Dorado. The Tuna and Marlin bite seems to have slowed a little but that may because everyone is fishing on the inside. There seems to be more Marlin and Tuna caught the farther out you go.

With all the attention on the Sailfish bite in Los Suenos some folks forget that we have some incredible inshore fishing in the area. There are the well known inshore spots like the island, guapinol, conejo, punta mala and the 26 rock. We fish these spots for Roosterfish, Snapper, Grouper, Wahoo and more. Then there are the secret spots…for these you need to know the right guys with the right GPS numbers.

Captain Roberto recently went to secret spot and caught a couple 80 plus pound Broom tail Groupers…using butterfly jigs.

Lots and lots and lots of Sailfish in the water today. Thanks to Rich the owner of the R&J for inviting me along for a great day on the water. The weather was perfect the water was perfect. We had really cold beers and some good grub. We went 20 miles out saw 50 Sailfish, raised 20 and released 10 and caught a Dorado for dinner. I was amazed at how many fish I saw in the water. Small schools of 5 and 6 Sailfish were everywhere. Thanks again Rich, Captain Jeremy and the crew of the R& J for a great day of catching.

The fleet was spread out from 15 to 25 miles and everyone seemed to be catching fish like we were.

Big Sailfish numbers are what we need…get em while they are hot.

February Fishing Report

February is the busiest month in the marina at Los Suenos and the fishing has been very good with some great Sailfish numbers. The one week of rain we had slowed the bite for a few days and pushed the blue water and the bite out past 40 miles. After the full moon the boats that fished out past 40 were rewarded with some great days.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” was on a roll the last week of February averaging 12 Sailfish and 3 Dorado (40 pounds) per day.

John Jackson and some friends went out on the “Ashley Nicole” with Captain Dean and had a really good day. They caught 4 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi for dinner, a striped Marlin and John got his first ever “Blue Marlin”…congrats John.

Mark and his group went out on the “Barbarrosa” and caught 8 Sailfish, 3 Dorado and one Striped Marlin.

Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” caught a 70 pound Broom tail Grouper in the same area.

Captain Glenn on the “Bethina” took a group from Minnesota 55 miles out and was rewarded by raising 30 Sailfish and Marlin.

Captain Kevin on the “Hot Reels” had a good day going 4 for 8 on Sailfish. They also caught 2 nice Dorado and a 300 plus pound Blue Marlin.
Captain Dave on the “MissBehavin” took a group a guys from Philly out to corner and had a great day going 8 for 11 on Sailfish and they caught one nice Mahi Mahi for the grill.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 7 for 10 on Sails in the same area…they also raised a 300 pound Blue Marlin.
Randy and his wife from Florida went out on the “Scorpion” and caught 2 Sailfish, raised a 300 plus pound Marlin and caught a 50 plus pound Bull Mahi Mahi. That’s their biggest Mahi ever so they are having a mount made.

Captain RJ on the “Predator” fished offshore and caught 6 Sailfish, 4 Dorado and a big Striped Marlin.

March Fish Forecast --

Hopefully the big Sailfish numbers will continue in March. The second leg of the Los Suenos Billfish Series is this month and some big Sailfish and Marlin numbers would be a wonderful thing.

The Marlin fishing will be consistent with the occasional Blue and Black being caught. The Striped Marlin bite was above average in February…look for that to continue.

There will also be lots of big Dorado and Tuna caught by boats going offshore for Sailfish and Marlin.

March Fish of the Month – Marlin

The second leg of the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Tournament is March 12th – 15th. More than 50 boats are expected to compete for over $200,000 in prizes.

Captain Marvin and the crew of “The Bite” won the first event in January by releasing 6 Striped Marlin and 22 Sailfish. With the Maverick boats finishing 1st,2nd and 3rd in that tourney expect one of those boats to be the favorite for the second go round.

The bite has been good so I’ll guess the winning boat will release 50 plus Sailfish and a half dozen Marlin in the 3 day event. Sailfish are worth 100 points and any Marlin is worth 500 points. All fish are released.

Stop by bubba’s and listen to the “live” fish reports on the VHF radio.

Good Luck and Good Fishing,

bubba

The offshore bite this past week went ballistic. Many boats hit double digits on sailfish. The giant of the week went to Glen on the reel deal with a Blue Marlin that they estimated at 750lbs, several others in the 500-150 range were landed also.
The inshore bite was tough this past week, large swells kept the fleet out of the surf where the snook lurk. The surf report shows the swell getting smaller by next thursday. Tight lines.

It just keeps getting better. This past week the average has gone up form 3 sails per boat to 5 sailfish per boat. The mahi #s are still good with most boats getting at least 1, 30lb average.
Again the inshore has been great. Starting mid feb we will start to see the giant snook get pushed out of the rivers on both sides of quepos where they will be accessible to those who are nimble enough to run their boat into the surf, drop off a livey and race out before the next big set rolls in, exciting stuff esp when you consider the heft of these snook. 30-50lbs is common.

The average boat this past week landed 2-4 sailfish with a mahi thrown in. There were several boats that did get into the double digits.
The inshore fishing has been smoking hot with lots of roosters, snook, snapper and mackerel .
This year the offshore waters are much cooler than the past year and we expect to see the bite last much longer than on a normal year.

May 2nd, Our client Gary Von Husen of Lake Worth, Fla. fished on our favorite inshore boat today and landed the biggest snook of his life, 52lbs. This was in addition to landing a tiny one that weighed about 25lbs. Almost every month out of the year we see snook that break 40lbs. Hands down , no questions asked we have the best snook fishing in the world and the biggest snook in the world. Dont believe it just look to the IGFA. Garys' fish will be entered as a 50lb line class record and if the line tests out correctly will become the new record for that line class.

That is correct about the Red Baron, gone!
The offshore bite was hot through the end of march. The Big Eye , Big Eye II and the Lamanta all posted double digit sailfish days with lots of blue marlin thrown in, what a great suprise.
This month started off slow but is showing signs of getting hot. For instance on the 8th Captn Dobbins on the Lamanta reported 4 sails and 2 dorado and yesterday they had 5 tuna up to 35lbs 1 wahoo and 1 sailfish.
The next month we will see much more tuna and wahoo plus I am expecting to see the marlin numbers jump.
Tight lines untill next time.

Fished aboard C.R. Dreamin out of Quepos on Tue., Wed. and Thru. last week. The fishing

off Quepos is not up to par due to a warm water eddy that has pushed into the

Costa Rica central Pacific Region. We were in 87-90 degree water. On Tues. we had a

small YFT and one sail on. On Wed. we went inshore and caught 4 Roosters to 50 lbs.,

had numerous others attack our baits. The live baits they had were much to big. We

were fishing with 2 lbs. Jacks. We also trolled up a Cerro, an Amberjack and a Bonita.

On Thru. we went back offshore for one sail. The sailfishing reports to the north and to the

south off Quepos is that it is red hot. Oh, well that's fishing. I would like to offer some advice

to anyone thinking of going to Costa Rica. DON'T FLY SANSA AIR FOR YOU LOCAL FLIGHTS.

They are not reliable, the planes are old and dilapidated. Because they couldn't keep the one

that was to fly us back to San Jose running we missed our flight home. As a result, I had to spend

two extra days in San Jose and purchase one way tickets for my family and I to get home. There screw

up cost me $3,000.00 dollars. There response was "we don't guarantee our flights will be on time".

Fly Nature Air, the planes are nicer and their service is more reliable.

Fish scarce off Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.

Costa Rica Sportfishing(Quepos, Costa Rica) February 1, 2007 — Fishing was very poor off the Quepos fishing grounds for the last two weeks of January 2007. Two and Three Marlin and Sailfish, on average, were caught on each boat. “I had one charter operator tell me this January was the worst fishing he’s seen in 23 years.” According to Ramen Fisher of Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing.

With the exception of the Osa Peninsula, the rest of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast ports are way off, cancellations have been on the rise. Boat captains are at a loss to explain the sudden drop in the number of fish. Global warming, el nino, long-lining, are the most popular explanations.

However, Ramen Fisher believes that the situation is more temporary, “There is no question that we have been seeing some very strange weather patterns, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, so far this winter.”

“It’s not surprising that the fish are being blown off course. We had 3 days of rain at the end of January, not normal for the central pacific coast of Costa Rica. The hot sunny weather typical for this time of year, has returned, and I wouldn’t be surprised if fishermen catch tons of sails and Marlin real soon.” According to Ramen Fisher.

Fish Take The Week Off

(Costa Rica, Quepos) January 14, 2007 — Fishing was slower than normal in Quepos Costa Rica this past week. Less boats set sail and less Sailfish set on hooks. For the week 41 Marlin, 40 Sailfish, 61 Dorado, and 30 Tuna.

“Pretty much everyone caught a Marlin or Sailfish and a Dorado”, according to Ramen Fisher of Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing. “These not numbers are not that far off the averages, and I expect the fishing to pick-up real soon, we have had an incredible fishing season so far.”

In other Quepos fishing news, construction of both the marina and the road bridge leading into town continues, which should lead to an increase in the popularity of Quepos fishing.

This Costa Rica Fishing Report has been brought to you by Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing.

Sailfish Moving In

Quepos - Costa Rica (January 5, 2007) – Following along with migrating fishermen, the Sailfish are beginning their move into the Quepos fishing grounds, with 56 Sailfish caught for the final week of 2006. With Christmas week marking the start of the high fishing season, double the number of boats set out in search of sails, most boats were rewarded with either Marlin or Sails.

Dorado and Tuna catches also showed increases, with 67 Dorado and 32 Tuna, bagged last week. However, more fishermen battled over the same number of Marlin, at 34 for the week, Marlin was the only species tracked that didn’t show an increase.

Everyone at Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing wishes the readers of our report Happy Fising in 2007!

The sailfish bite continues to heat up. On dec. 7th the Bigeye and the Precedent both landed 5 sails each.
Congrats to Jim Shaw for landing his first dorado on a fly on the Lamanta, a beauty of 35lbs. Jims brother John last week landed a 40lb snook and a 12lb corvina ( white sea bass) on the same day. In the next month there will be other TOAD snook landed because we have the largest snook in the world right here, bar none!!! If you want to catch the largest snook of your life there is no better time to be here. tight lines to all and to all a very fishy christmas.

Quepos Costa Rica "El Dorado"
Fishing in Costa Rica
Quepos, Costa Rica (December 11, 2006)

Fishermen seeking the lost city of gold (el dorado) found it in Quepos. A very weak Dorado season seems to be ending with a splash. No fewer than 70 Dorado were caught by fishermen out of the port of Quepos on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.

Marlin and Sailfish numbers remain consistent with 40 Marlin and 38 Sailfish caught and released this past week and 21 Tuna were thrown into the catch as well.

Hook & Hooker’s Ramen Fisher summed up the Dorado Season this way “Marlin fishing has been outstanding since early October, Sailfish started coming in around mid-November, but Dorado has been disappointing. It’s good to see fishermen have the chance to tackle this incredible fish.”

Golden Returns - Dorado Numbers Up in Quepos Costa Rica

Quepos Costa Rica (November 28, 2006) — Dorado, also known as Mahi Mahi or Dolphin Fish, means "Golden" in Spanish. And sport fishermen struck gold this past week in Quepos Costa Rica. Although, not a record breaking week by any means, for a season that has seen very little Dorado, last week’s numbers gave Dorado fishermen a reason to smile.

Costa Rica has had below normal rainfall this past season, resulting in less Dorado numbers overall, but an increase in other species of fish. Marlin went in the opposite direction this past week, decreasing to 23 caught for the week and Sailfish held steady at 28, Tuna saw a small increase to 25.

Quepos is gearing up for the high fishing season, with only a month to go before the fishermen return in bulk, captains are busy finishing preperations. Indications are that this is going to be a very strong season on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.

Reports are that January is pretty much sold out in Quepos, and fishermen planning their Costa Rica fishing trips should look to February, and dates there after.

"High fives in Quepos Costa Rica"

Quepos, Costa Rica (November 20, 2006) — It was high fives for fishermen this past week in Quepos Costa Rica. 35 Marlin, 35 Sailfish, 25 Dorado and 15 Tuna. Slightly more sport fishing boats set sail out of Quepos this week.

Marlin fishing remains strong in Quepos, and the Sailfish numbers are way up this week, 15 more Sailfish were caught over the previous week. Ramen Fisher, of Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing, says that it’s too early to get excited over the Sailfish totals, “Sailfish aren’t supposed to come here in numbers until mid to late December. However, Marlin came in early and we may be seeing the same with Sailfish. We’re definitely going to pay close attention to the Sailfish numbers next week.”

Quepos has had an excellent fall fishing season this year. On average, 3 boats have set out daily, with none coming back empty, and quite a few catching and releasing multiple Marlin and Sailfish.

The fishing out of the Quepos port was for the past two weeks very tough. The rain that we didnt get in the month of oct. fell the first two weeks of nov. The seas were rough and the trash lines didnt form because there was so much trash in the ocean. I dont know what boats this other guy is reporting for and dont care but of the 15 boats that I got reports from there were NO marlin landed. The dorado bite will keep improving through the second week of december and that is when the sailfish bite will get red hot with double digit days being common.
Here are a few of the boats that fished the past two weeks with their results: Lamanta 5 dorado and two tuna, wavedancer 3 dorado, cayla 1 sailfish and 1 dorado, Bigeye 1 sailfish and 1 dorado, Sea lady 3 dorado

The Marlin Action is in Quepos Costa Rica

Quepos Costa Rica (November 12, 2006) — The story out of Quepos Costa Rica continues to be incredible Marlin Fishing. During the previous week, 35 Marlin were recorded caught and realeased, by boats sailing out of Quepos Port. Ramen Fisher, of Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing Charters, is pleased with the numbers and added “I’m also really happy with the number of boats going out daily. It seems that fishermen have gotten the word that Marlin Season has started early.”

Across the board fish numbers were either even, or ahead, of last week’s numbers. Tuna saw a big jump - with 24 being caught. Fishermen bagged 29 Dorado and 20 Sailfish. A few boats even landed Barracuda.

November, is traditionally the month that Marlin start moving into the Quepos Fishing grounds, although it appears that October marked the beggining of this years Marlin fishing season. Sailfishing, which doesn’t begin in earnest until late December, appears to be following the normal pattern.

Captain Dobbins on the Lamanta last week reported in with two days offshore. His catch total was 17 dorado ( up to 35lbs) 1 wahoo, 1 snapper , 1 jack and lost a huge roosterfish at the boat( 70lb estimate) and broke off on an average marlin ( 300lbs).
This past weekend the boats Wild Lady and the Bigeye both had full days offshore . The bite slowed considerably with both boats only totaling 5 dorado, 1 sailfish and 2 small tuna.
This week we have the Wavedancer out for 4 days and the Sealady for one and the Lamanta for one so it should be intreasting to see how the bite developes.

Quepos Celebrates 50 Years with 50 Dorado

Quepos, Costa Rica (Nov. 6, 2006) — The Canton (county) of Aguirre Costa Rica celebrated it’s 50th anniversary this past week with a fiesta in Quepos. Sport fishermen celebrated the anniversary by catching 50 Dorado in the Quepos fishing grounds.

With the return of closer to normal rainfall, on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Dorado returned as well. With fresh river mouth debris to feed on, the Dorado made easy picking, for this past week’s fishermen.

The Marlin and Sailfish totals continue to rise, 33 Marlin and 23 Sails for the past week, a trend that started in early October. It’s too soon, though, to call an early start to the season. One or two more weeks, and if the numbers remain strong, you may want to consider early to mid-December Costa Rica Fishing Vacation, if you’re looking to save a few bucks on fishing this year.

Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing

October was the “Month of Marlin” in Costa Rica Fishing

Quepos, Costa Rica, (October 30, 2006) — A recent storm that left 9,000 Costa Ricans without drinking water, and caused damage to 42 communities, did not appear to put a damper on a very strong October 2006 fishing season in Costa Rica.

Both fish and fishermen braved rain and a rough Pacific Ocean, this past week in Quepos Costa Rica, to post even better catches on Marlin and Sailfish.

One boat had the good fortune to catch and release 4 Marlin and 4 Sailfish, and most boats fishing out of Quepos, showed a good mix of dorado and tuna as well. For the week ending October 26, 2006, 19 Marlin, 23 Sailfish, 15 Dorado and 12 Tuna were caught at the Quepos fishing grounds. Ramen Fisher of Hook & Hooker Costa Rica Fishing was a little surprised at the numbers,”I expected the heavy rains would drive off the Marlin and bring in the Dorado - but that didn’t happen.”

In general the month of October has been surprising in Costa Rica, with the exception of last week’s storm, rain totals are off by large percentages throughout much of the nation. This has resulted in better than normal fishing for Costa Rica this October.

Costa Rica Fishing Report October 20, 2006

Another strong week for Marlin Fishing off the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. 16 Marlin, an increase of 3 over the previous week, however other species dropped down a bit. Only 14 Dorado were caught for the week. More Marlin than Dorado in October. Who would imagine.

The reasons for the increased Marlin and lower Dorado numbers lie in the weather. We have had a much drier October than usual in Costa Rica. The hurricane that affected Baja California also threw up heavy seas and a lot of rain. We should see Dorado numbers pick-up in next weeks Costa Rica Fishing Report.

October 2006 - Marlin Jumping

A strong week for Marlin and Sailfishing on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Four or more boats sailed out of the port of Quepos Costa Rica, everyday of Columbus week, and all had luck.

For the week, a very satisfying 13 Marlin, an incredible 20 Sailfish, 16 Tuna and 10 Dorado, were caught. The numbers for Marlin and Sailfish are abnormaly high, this may be due to the very weak rainy season Costa Rica is having, and may explain why the Dorado numbers are so low.

January which is typically hot, hot, hot, for fishing in Quepos is living up to the expectations that we have grown to rely on. The first week of January was a little low on numbers, but as we approached the 2nd week the real numbers started to show. David Payne fishing the Reel Deal on both the 8th and 9th Released 8 sails on first day and came back for more on the second day Releasing 9 sails and 2 Mahi. On the 14th we had 9 sails, 5 Tuna and 3 Rainbow runners. January 20th Frederick Bifulco had a day with 8 Releases on Sails and 8 Mahi. Ralph Hornsby followed that trip with 9 sail releases on Saturday. The bite is on!

December The Reel Deal was out of the water for Maintenance, both engines overhauled but she is back in the water and ready for a full season of fishing Action.

November Fishing was just getting into the groove, Sails were a little sparse but numbers improved as we got towards the middle of the month. Fish were more interested in mating then eating. Crocodile Bay Lodge August Report
www.crocodilebay.com
Fishing has been a little tough lately but for those with a little patience the pay day has come. Jeff Carpenter had a slow day out of box and scored a big rooster on day two. On day three he invited his lady luck in the form of wife Donna along for the ride.A couple sails had come unbuttoned and got away and a third didn't care for the bait when the saw some small tuna working. They caught a couple for sushi and put one on for bait and in no time a 300 pound blue marlin gulped it up and turned the ocean into a dance floor. "It's just like you see on TV," Jeff repeated at the bar several times as he re-lived the fight. The sails have moved back in with most angler getting four to six shots a day with a marlin popping up here and there. Little tuna are in rat packs and a couple roosters over 50 lbs hit the rails this week.

Stites ...All these fish released so weight is only estimation…Fishing with Guest since 4 year the upper Rio San Juan, we caught thousands of tarpon we may be wrong but it will only be of 10? 15lb? diference no more http://nicaraguafishing.com/

Most readers will find strange than we catch& release so big tarpon in America, so far it was only possible on the coast of Africa …Explanation is than Rio San Juan / Nicaragua lake offer specific conditions… one of them is than we fish for Giant Tarpon and Snook in quiet fresh water at 120 miles from sea!!!… I report “ two category of tarpon” ( obviously both are Megalops Atlanticus .). the regular Silver king 60lb /150lb these are migrating fish, the same one than can be caught in all the caribean, Florida etc… ,, and Our “Special Nicaragua Lake “ 100/250lb +…whose colour is Dark on the back , Golden on the side… these are the one witch stay herein fresh water!!! in the immensity of Nicaragua lake . I have no idea of how many years they stay but they become udge. With same length these fish are much higher and weight some 30/40% more than the one caught for Example in Florida or Central America Caribean cost , there is a lot of food here in River and lake.. , water temperature is almost the same all year round, a lot of space to play.. no reason to go back to the struggle of sea…may be for reproduction but there also we have our theory..

With years of fishing, we learned where to go for the really big fish…and nowday in each trip guests have fish on… I accumulate many testimonies upon the size of Giant tarpon of Nicaragua lake. Obviously we catch and release but in May 2003 due to an accident we weighed one of these fish it was a 235lb, also Journallist of Major fishing Magazines came and fished with us some for as long as a week ( For Example FIELDS AND STREAM , also SPORTFISHING MAGASINE, and VOYAGES DE PECHE, and LA PESCA,…) Journalist in their articles confirm the quantity and size of TARPON in upper Rio San Juan… May be the most amasing is than there is no special time to come, it is the same any day all year round Note also than all our fishing is in quiet Fresh water .. no tuff sea, no Dangerous hard Barra to pass, No “seasick jigging”… we Troll or Cast ‘Bait casting/ Spinning and also fly fish , it can even be on what I call Extreme Light tackle for Giant tarpon…according to guest experience we go as light as 12lb. 10lb ? 8 lb..( We “made” all world record for tarpon in these line class and also the Children, Junior boys and Girl…)

I also report the presence of very big snook in the area , they can be caught all year round but the main season for them is from October till the end of January ..
Our other alternative fishing to relax from Giant tarpon is Fishing for Big Rainbowbass on conventional or fly tackles in close Solentiname archipelago, Fishing for these is good all year round as for Machacas mainly in Rio Frio …

I did not ”discover “ a new Tarpon Paradise …(as describe Field&Stream ) .I only can talk of a kind of reopening of a fantastic Tarpon Fishing destination… … In the seventies, the destination was world famous , there were 3 camps on the river… Civil war came in Nicaragua ..all stop… nowday ( since 15 years ) the country is quiet and slowly opening to tourism …

Still a very quiet country even if Real Estate in Nicaragua is booming …. since 3 years there is a lot of foreign investment from individual wishing a cool place to retire to major World known Tourism Company.

In our San Juan River more and more visitors are coming reason why I recently add some boats and also end the building of a nice GUEST HOUSE in order to provide Guest really nice accommodation . http://www.nicaraguafishing.com/accomodation.htm
Visitors enjoy what is one of the best Tarpon fishing in the world and also .the still virgin beauty of the country, the unspoiled Jungle.. Wild life , arts, History…
I also report ( October ) the presence of the first big snook ( over 25lb ) of the year , also a very good fishing for Rainbow bass/Lagunero/Wapote around 5/6 lb, we are now entering in the dry season this quality of fishing will remain till May next year …After fishing will also be great but with the presence of rain.

My company is growing and soon we will offer two additional fishing destination in Nicaragua.one on Caribean cost other one on Pacific cost .

My name is Philippe Tisseaux , my E mail is riosanjuan@racsa.co.cr comments about this fishing report are more than welcome.

Arena Alta Sportfishing Newsletter

February 12, 2004

Greetings from Arena Alta,

As many have noticed the AA newsletter has not sent out since early January. We are sorry to report that less than honorable people have been attempting to “hack” our mailing list, but that those efforts have been thwarted and we are back IN BUSINESS.

Another report will be in the AM highlighting specials for the Spring

Recently Norman Berry, the Publisher Editor of Sea Angling News, visited Arena Alta. The following is his report being published in Sea Angling News!!!!

I was recently invited to sample the superb fishing for sailfish at Arena Alta Sportfishing at Golfito [Zancudo, actually] in Costa Rica. As I couldn’t make the first invite, I think I was in New Zealand at the time, I shuffled a few things around and away I went. Being mindful of the fact that Dave Lewis of Sea Angler had gone before me I knew what to expect. I also took some tackle to test so as I could say to her indoors, “it’s not a holiday love, I’m going on business, honest.” I took 2 reels from Daiwa, their new 2 speed lever drag and a top of the range fixed spool, the Saltiga Z 4500. I also took 2 rods from Fladen, their 12-30 standup stick and a fixed spool bass/spinning rod but they will cover a separate spot elsewhere another time.

I booked my flights to San Jose through travelbag.com as they had done an excellent job at a reasonable price on my New Zealand holiday. You can speak to them too.

Dar Randall from Arena Alta Sportfishing organises everything once you get to San Jose airport but leaves the flight from the UK up to you, that way you enjoy maximum flexibility for stopovers in Miami, etc. Or you can send the family to Orlando while you fish.

I met a group of American anglers on the flight from Miami. They were spending a weekend in the same area. They used to go to Kenya a couple times a year but they now feel it’s “unsafe” so they do several visits to Costa Rica instead, as it’s only a short, cheap flight away and they can have a long week end there.

As I arrived late at night I was met at the airport by Dar’s representatives and driven to the Hampton Inn, a subsidiary of Hilton Hotels, very new and smart it was too. A fully air conditioned room with en-suite bathroom, nice, Mrs. B would have approved. A good night’s sleep followed but I was awake early with anticipation of what lay ahead.

A good continental breakfast with fresh fruit salad was a great way to start the day.

I was on the 10:30 SANSA flight to Golfito, is left about 11:00 but that’s normal I’m told. I should have been on the 07:30 flight but due to my short notice visit it was fully booked. The planes are single engine Cessnas but are adequate for the 90 mile flight over mountains, jungle, and coastline. Very scenic and one passenger must have video’d the whole flight.

I landed at Golfito airstrip, a short stretch of tarmac to find nobody to meet me but a $2 taxi ride took me to a slipway and after meeting Andrew Robertson, who it turned out, used to live around the corner from me in Emsworth, small world, a water taxi took me to the Arena Alta Lodge.

I must say the lodge is very well appointed, just a short walk from the pontoon and all the accommodation is just a few yards from the bar and restaurant, very handy.

I had a cabin a block of 3. Brick built, air conditioned with an en-suite bathroom, not bad for roughing it in the jungle at a fishing lodge. I did see one lodge elsewhere and it was just a corrugated iron shed, no contest.

My room contained 2 double beds but I understand that the deal for UK anglers is 3 beds and 3 on a boat as opposed to 4 on a boat for the USA guests. Slightly dearer but more fishing time per angler, and let’s admit it, if you’re flying all that way you want the maximum amount of time fishing, for the best possible price. It’s a good deal, which is why I’m happy to support it. At US $2300 inclusive, and it is FULLY inclusive of ALL meals, drinks, tips, transfers, water taxis and accommodation, you even get your laundry done, all you pay is your departure tax of US $26 when you leave San Jose and your return flights from home. My flights cost me 450 pounds inclusive of all taxes and charges but I expect you could get cheaper from a bucket shop if you wanted to. At the current rate of exchange, everything included, taxis as well, it costs about 1760 pounds per person. I consider that a good deal for what you get.

The food is very good, a choice of breakfasts, cooked or not, onboard lunch consists of fresh fruit, sandwiches, and roast chicken quarters, Katia the chef really knows her job.

There is a huge coolbox of iced drinks, which include beer, bottled water, coke, and soft drinks.

The evening meal is chosen the day before and usually consists of some of the previous day’s catch but we also had steak and crayfish with very tasty salads, but that was our choice. Ever, the barman, is skilled in making Piña Coladas to a very high standard and we always had a couple after fishing and before a shower and dinner.

The day would start with a gentle knock on the door at 5:00. Marielos would be there with a drink of your choice. Then it would be breakfast of choice at 5:30. Onto the boat at 6:00 and off to fish for live bait at the other side of the bay. This could take from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on how hard they were to catch. Once enough bait was in the livebait tank we were off to sea.

The boats are 30 ft long sports boats with either twin Johnson 125hp 2 stroke or twin 115hp 4 stroke Suzukis, both cruise at 25kts and can do 35kts + if in a hurry. They are equipped with colour sounders, radios, GPS, and a toilet. All fishing tackle is provided and is of a very high standard. Roller rods and 2 speed lever drag Penn International reels, from 16’s to 50 sw’s, all loaded with Ande line. Hooks are a bit primitive, big and bigger are the 2 sizes but they do work. There is a fighting chair but I prefer stand up fishing.

There is a choice of offshore fishing for sails, tuna, marlin, dorado, etc., or inshore fishing for roosterfish, jacks, snapper, snook, etc. We did a bit of each and caught many different species.

The fishing. I’ve talked enough about the logistics, now I’ll tell you about the fishing.

Mostly the pictures will tell the story.

My fishing partner for the week was a lady from the USA, her name is Chlake Raineau, but for convenience we agreed on Sharky, my Hungarian/French pronunciation isn’t too hot.

She was the perfect partner for me, 6ft tall, an American size 6, which equates to an English 10, I think, about 130 lbs, into kick boxing and a personal fitness trainer, we could have been twins. Most of her fishing has been for tuna so a few tweaking lessons were required. Once we got her out of the fighting chair and standing up she was perfect. We didn’t argue and shared strikes, in fact we got on great. Perhaps Dar should get into matchmaking.

The sun shone most days and a temperature of 90+ was normal. On the calm sea the sails could easily be seen and a course would be steered towards them. We operated hit and switch tactics. When a sailfish attacked a lure, a livebait would be dropped back and the lures wound in.

When Elvis the crewman felt the sail bite he would strike the fish and set the hook then pass the rod to the angler who would proceed to fight the fish. There was one exception to this but that will be covered in a tackle review. They were awesome fighters, leaping clear of the water several times and making long runs, mostly they were in the 80-100lbs range, one smaller and a couple larger but all weights were estimated as a catch and release policy operated.

Offshore we had 16 sailfish between the 2 of us over the trip, 3 good dorado, about a dozen tuna, of which the largest was about 50lb and 2 bonito. Inshore we had a super amberjack of about 60lb, 2 roosterfish, the largest about 15lb, jack cravelles, snapper, a pompano and a bull shark of about 200lb+, lost at the boat when it broke a rod. I was in awe of Sharky when she fought that shark, it was big, it was tough and determined not to be boated. On the other end of the rod was Sharky, equally tough and determined to boat the shark. I admit she did resort to the fighting chair but she didn’t give up and had the shark under the boat on a short line when the rod broke and the shark went free. That was shortly after she had boated a 60lb amberjack which had fought equally as hard.

I think that was the only fish we lost once it was hooked, pretty impressive statistics. Due not only to the skill of the anglers but also due in no small way to the boat handling skills of our Captain, Antonio, who has 22 years experience.

It’s not only the fishing that’s fantastic, you are surrounded by nature, on land and at sea.

On my first morning at the lodge, as I walked the few yards from my cabin to breakfast, I was greeted by the sight of a squadron of pelicans flying in formation over the kitchen. While eating you can see colourful birds all around and hear parrots calling in the trees. While afloat I was humbled by the sight of a huge pod of whales sunbathing. We cruised slowly through them and could hear them breathing as they remained motionless on the surface, guarded, I think, by dolphins that swam around them and jumped in front of the boat. Later that day we saw what must have been a thousand dolphins chasing food a couple of hundred yards away, suddenly, as one, they turned towards us and I thought, “if they hit us we’ll be sunk.” Just before they hit us they parted and went either side of us, thrashing the water and jumping, doing barrel rolls in the air, reforming after they had passed us. It made me realise just how small and insignificant we are in this world.

There are other things to do, Eco jungle walks, kayaking, bird watching. You can also have free use of an electric golf cart, GTI version, on your day off to explore the local area and do some shopping for gifts. I can recommend the local artists’ paintings. There are superb beaches and the water was 84 degrees plus when we were there. A real bonus is that you don’t need any injections, and don’t need malaria tablets either. I suggest you take SPF 30 sunscreen, insect repellent and perhaps an anti-histamine cream and an anti-septic cream, just like in your first aid box at home. Oh! And a long sleeved T-shirt, long trousers and a hat, just in case the sun gets too much. In my opinion this is a well run outfit, the place is clean, the food is good, the accommodation is above average, the staff are of a high quality and the Captain catches you fish. Many thanks to Kathy of SANSA and Susanne of the Tourist Board for your help. I’ll be back!

COME TO FISH IN COSTA RICA THIS AUTUMN!

Call FishCostaRica now at

or e-mail us at fishing@costarica.net, to book with the best.

Autumn looks fantastic for sport fishing throughout Costa Rica, based on reports coming in to FishCostaRica over the past couple of days. There are open slots available with many of the country's top boats and captains for September, October and November.

Let's start from the south and then move up to the center, then north, and finally east. Down at Crocodile Bay Lodge, on the Osa Peninsula, David Kanski tells us that the sails have been teasing anglers lately by floating on the surface with their sails proudly displayed but turning down all offerings.

Recent offshore catches include small marlin in the 200 to 240-pound range, wahoo up to 50 pounds and a few dorado. Inshore the action has been consistent with roosterfish readily taking baits. Flor de Maria Cuarda took a dozen roosters, two of them at more than 50 pounds each, while Ella Gunst took a couple at 35 pounds each. Ty Visscher added a nice 25-pound snapper to an inshore catch.

FishCostaRica hears from the Tiger Shark out of Quepos that fishing is up and down. Last week, however, the boat had two great days in a row: on the first, the group had six sail hits, bringing three of them to the boat before releasing. The following day it was the turn of the Quintana family, owners of the excellent Manuel Antonio hotel, La Mariposa. They came back satisfied after hooking two mahi mahis (dolphin fish or dorado) and five tuna, which all made for an excellent dinner.

A spell of good weather over the last couple of weeks translated into fabulous fishing out of Carillo/Guanamar in Guanacaste. Captain Rob Gordon on the Kitty Kat had some stupendous half days: one group of clients managed 12 sail hits in just a couple of morning hours last week, with six brought to the boat. Sails are everywhere, says Rob - a dozen hits a morning have been common - and they're getting at least one marlin shot a day out in Guiones.

Inshore, there's food fish: small tuna, dorado and wahoo.

Further up, Captain Randy Wilson of Tamarindo Sportfishing tells us that on August 25, his group on the Talking Fish came up with two sails on a fly. A couple of anglers on their smaller boat, the Salsa, also had a super outing that same day. They returned satisfied from a half-day charter with an attractive Cubera snapper, plus some tuna, wahoo and dorado.

Sue Curtis of the Capullo out of Tamarindo reports that the sails are definitely there, and that anglers have been seeing some marlin, and of course, tuna and dorado.

Meanwhile, on the Caribbean side, Captain Eddie Brown on the Bull Shark just phoned in to say that fishing has been great. The ocean has been dead flat for the past 10 days, and his charters have been bagging tarpon in the 65-95 pound range, tuna between 20 and 40 pounds, jack and king, all offshore. One group snagged two wahoo, one of 40 pounds, the other a neat 60-pounder, just before coming in on the afternoon of August 22.
