Yeah Marty,
Those guys worked their tails off over the weekend. I felt really bad for Deke though, tons of boats and fishermen and he could not wrap any bait. Bummer! Luckily for us you could make your own right next to his boat, no problem.

Blow hard! Hoping Gale drives the main swath of clean warm water holding tuna off Monterey and Gumdrop right into Morro. Main band is not too far away. Looks like our Northern Channel Islands will also see ample wind right on through the weekend. More boat work and getting ready for albacore.

Thanks again Steve, was a pleasure to finally fish with you. Great time on the water and some quality fish found their way to gaff despite me being a little rusty. Probably Farmed the remainder of our limit, but 6 is nothing to complain about.

Doctor HOT thanks you as well

Greetings,
Fished PSL in the skiff today with FarmerD...good fishing with you Dustin. Deke had no bait, so we jigged up 30 or so dines in a half hour and headed up N of the Lighthouse in choppy seas. Amazingly, the ocean laid down a little and while it was bumpy, it was actually glassy. We had 4 keepers in the box (plus a keeper ling, cab and 4 rockfish) by 8:30 (plus had a few raked baits), but then the drift went wacky and we had no other takers until the wind began cranking at 9:45. Moved inside port and picked up 2 more in shallow water. Outside fish were in 40-60'.
Good halibut year!!! Hope the wind lays down and the tuna come in!
best fishes,
steve

Fished out of MB yesterday for a decent pick at the rockfish above the abalone farm in 135-155ft.We ended up with 24 decent fish for 3 guys, and lost 1 nice halibut at the boat. The halibut was hooked just north of the Rock on a sardine drifting in 60ft.Nothing more after that first drift so we then headed up the line.Whales were everywhere at the north end of the bay and put on quite a show....weather was great....Jeff

When you bring up tempbreak. Click on the words
"Santa Cruz" not the dot. Then just drag the fish and the block will give you distance and lat/lon from Santa Cruz..

From this morning's San Luis Obispoo Tribune

Surf forecast

A 1- to 2-foot northwesterly (315-degree deep-water) swell (with a 7- to 11-second period) will continue at this height through this morning.

Today’s charts are indicating increasing northwesterly winds as the pressure gradients tighten up along the Central Coast this afternoon through next week.

These northwesterly (325-degree shallow-water) seas will further increase to 5 to 7 feet (with a 4- to 7-second period) on Tuesday afternoon and will continue at this height and period through Saturday.

Arriving from the southern hemisphere:

This morning’s 2- to 3-foot southern hemisphere (200-degree deep-water) swell (with a 15- to 17-second period) will continue at this height and period through Saturday.

Went out of M.B. on Sat. fished all around Estero and out front of the AB farm from 60ft. to 160ft.I don't know if it was me or the moon, tide, time? I could not get the bottom fish to bite."When the farmer can't swim he blame's his bathing suit". It was a great day on the water, but no good for putting meat on the table.

Way to go Jack !
The weather window is forecast to close tomorrow with wind for a week. Maybe the fish will get closer by the next weather break. The numbers of fish being caught are encouraging with counts as high as thirty. I think that Half Moon Bay has bait which would be a good thing.

last minute - changed plans and decided to go out of monterey. Headed out towards 123.25/36.10 area. caught 1 albie - water temp was 61 to 64 deg, clean but not much bait or sea life. On the way back in stopped and checked out the 401 area. looked alot better saw a jumper and metered fish down 50 to 150ft. but with no live bait. we could only troll and try dropping artificials, for no takers.

Friends: Down here in Cabo San Lucas. Might fish on Mon. or Tues. Sorry you missed them Bob. Those little buggers have been jumping over us to Oregon for last few years ...

Van Barbieri was right ... there is this stray code section of the F&G Code which says you must fill out your tags with a pen that writes with an ink that does not smear or wear off. The pen they used was one of these water-soluable ones that came off easily and was not legible ... in fact it disappeared. Left the officer with impression that tag not filled out at all ... Good intentions are not sufficient under the law. Lesson for all of us.

Talked to Sam Kalie who skippered the Admiral for many years through the best and worst alby seasons we've had. He's running a tanker now from SF to LB and back every couple days. Said he goes right over the compas rose, chicken head and the doughnut. So far he's seen nothing that looks very encouraging down this way. Mostly Davison and up but will keep us posted as things change.

Looked up at the cape san martin area today for nothing - saw 2 jumpers at 47/33 but never got a strike all day. Saw good blue water up to 62 degs with birds/bait and whales. The farther out I went, the cooler and less sea life I saw. Started at 40/30 and went out to 55/45, looked fishery on the inside break where it went from 58 to 61.

Steve, I know you have been fishing the same area for years. Was and remains my favorite Hali area up and down the coast. I can say, (and I am sure you have experienced the same) the GREAT days all came when the tide turned to the south. Although, even with the tides are right, you can have the wind pushing oposite. Have never had much luck in that area bounce balling like I have south, but would rather drift an area that I know produces than cover ground. Thinking of picking up a small boat again so I can join ya.

I will run for the Donut on Friday. The water temps have moved back up at only 20 miles out and the last chlorophyll shot looked clean. The boats out of Santa Cruz did fairly well with some boats catching 15 albacore. I'd like to know what other boats are fishing tuna tomorrow so maybe we can work together.

Greetings,
Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a sweet scoop of perfect 'dines from Deke and headed N on a glassy ocean. Ended the day with 2 keeper 'buts (26" & 30"), but should have had more. Had 4 or 5 solid hits and raked baits. The two we landed were barely hooked! The current changed twice today...which really screwed things up for about 3 hours (caught no fish during that time). It was going S in the morning, switched to going N (bite shut down) and then finally shifted to the S by 11. I think there are more fish out there, but they were just not biting that well because of the funky drift.
Good luck to those that go out this weekend. Deke has kind dines...tip him well!!!
best fishes,
steve

Seems to me that "legible" can be open to interpretation. What may not be legible to one might be to another. I myself read and write in sawhili.

Regarding the story that was posted...
He shouldn't have been fined anything. Should have been dismissed entirely.
It wasn't, the fine was only reduced. Which leads me to believe that there were other circumstances involved instead of "just ab's blood on the tags" and illegible to read.

Bob I guess you didn't follow what happened to him.
He did follow the law just the AB's Blead on the tags after they were filled out. And became hard to read. Something like that can even happen to you!!
So sometime when you try to follow the law Crap Happens.

I would rather obey the law and avoid this whole ticket thing and court and have to call in help and then be happy with a 50% reduction in fines and court cost.; Follow the regs and it`s better for all concerned. Irregardless of the circumstances.

Is any one going out for Tuna on 7/02/09? We will be making a run out of Morro to go north of the elbow and up to and around Davis sea mount in the morning. Just wanting to know if there are any other takers that maybe making the run for Tuna in the morning. The weather looks like it is goiing to be really nice for a 250 mile run.

Well it looks like MEL, as usual, took care of one of us again - we all owe it to him for taking up the cause when it is the right thing to do - I'm just glad he's on our team ! thanks again Mel !

Well here's the word on our Ab ticket. With Mel's help Pat and I sent an explanatory letter to Judge Lehan, Mendocino Superior Court. We made a point that the officers were professional and polite. The Court sent the letter to F&G, and after reviewing their comments reduced the fine to $252 from $588. We paid the reduced fine, and want to thank Mel.
On my next trip the guys next to us at the dock had their Abs confiscated and got a multi Thousand $ ticket for "upgrading" after they had taken their limits. If you go Ab'ing be careful.

Mike and Jim, I started receiving Sport Fishing mag around 6 months ago, but I never signed up for a subscription. They must have gotten my name and address from fish posts. I bet they will go after me too.

The mag is generally worthless, but it did have a good article in this month about kayak charters in Baja for striped marlin.

Chartered a boat saturday in ensenada out of Gordos sportfishing. Great boat and crew. We trolled for yellows with no luck but caught 9 hefty bonito. we then headed for the rocks and proceeded to catch the bigggest darn rock fish i have ever seen. loaded the boat with fish up to 8#s. great times and would recommend it if you guys are ever down that way.

Sport fishing magazine did the same to me. I signed up for like $15 for 3 years and they sent me bills to renew my subscription after about a year. Still comes in everynow and then, but I dont ever sign up. They are weasles and I wouldn't recommend them at all, it's not that good anyway.

Took my 4 and 6 year old out catching bait in the bay, they had a blast. Had to head in when my 4 year old wanted her blankie. My son said it was the best day ever....sometimes keeping it simple is the way to go.

SPORT FISHING - the magazine - BEWARE !!

I received a formal letter saying I owed money for a past due bill for a subscription I had received in 2008. It stated that there would be "further steps taken to collect" this past due money owed. Thinking I had sent in for a years subscription and forgot to pay, or thrown away the numerous number of ad type letters I had received - I went ahead and paid the $30.

This week I got two magazines in the mail, and when I contacted the subscription dept - they said I had re-newed my subscription for two more years.
I don't mind reading the magazine, but what a chicken-shit way to trick you into re-newing.

I am going to send the editors a letter, but I bet you won't see it posted in the magazine.
Must really be tough times to have to threaten you to get you to read their magazine !!

BEWARE IF you get a letter saying you owe monies for a past subscription - do not pay !!

Sardines. By the way Doug is selling 5 gallon buckets of fresh dead for $20 on the days when we fish. Some guys are canning and they are really good! Others freezing up bait. Call and leave Doug your number and be ready to come down in the early mornings when we get in.

altimetry, sst's,chloropyll. all useful indeed. but i got a kick thinking that only less than twenty years ago? we would ride darby's boats and just head out to the high spots to look for fish with lots of success. kinda funny to think about.

pray for tuna

Harrel,

Thanks for the great article on Altimetry. I had it backwards on the colors for the updraft. We went down to Purisma for bottom fish and limited out on Hard to dies, Bolina and Reds. Two keep Lings. Fishing for anything else other than Gopher Codes was pretty slow. The weather was not anything close to the reports, so we decided to make a run offshore from Purisma and went to 34.57 and 121.28, 62.5 water mid blue and clear for Nada.Came back in at 35 miles an hour, just flat calm seas.Port was closed at 5:30 and had to run to Morro to get out, nice that is was so calm.Great day on the water.

Went to the islands sat. morning with Tom and Skip on Tom's boat Bushwacker, we caught halibut at three of five areas we fished, with 10 fish going from 12 to 42 pounds! Skip got the big one, his personal best.Five were in the 30+ range, unbelievable quality. As for 10% to Marty on the side pot, I'm against that idea. Side pots should be 100% payout, we'er just trying to make the tourny moer interesting and hopefully bring more people to fish.

Left Morro at 0930 ran on pretty flat and foggy water and ran past the light house. 14 mixed fish for 2 anglers. Pulled the plug at around 6:00 pm ran 30 knots on flat water home. Almost did not go because of the forcast and wind forecast from Sailflow. Great day all things considered. I caught my first Tree fish.
