Subject: Places to fish on the Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai River is certainly one of the most popular rivers on the Kenai Peninsula. It is home to 4 of the 5 species of Pacific salmon. There are numerous other streams where you can fish for king salmon especially on the weekends. There is the Anchor River, Deep Creek, and the Ninilchik River in addition to the Kasilof River. With the exception of the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers, these streams are only open in June. You can also find king salmon in the salt waters of Cook Inlet and Resurrection Bay.

There are many other fishing opportunities in the many stocked lakes in the area. These are especially good areas for families with small children. Come the the Kenai Peninsula and enjoy the best of Alaska.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

EARLY KINGS!
Fishing on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers kicks into gear mid May with the arrival of the first Kings. I love fishing on the early side of the season. All the fish are bright and full of fight. There may not be as many fish in the river, but the odds of success are still good because these fish are aggressive. Another bonus to the early season is less boat traffic on the Kenai.

The first run Kenai Kings average a bit smaller than the late runners of July, but I have taken Kings over 60lbs in the early run. The world record of 97.4 lbs was taken May 17. Catching an average chrome bright 30lb fish is not likely to cause complaint.

Kasilof Kings are not as big as Kenai Kings; however there are some reasons many anglers love the Kasilof. One is success. The Kasilof is a small river and most of the fish stage in a three-mile stretch of river. You are always on fish when drifting the Kasilof. When the bite is hot, it?s hard to beat.

I AM BOOKING KING SALMON TRIPS EXCLUSIVELY FROM MAY 19-JUNE 9.

UPPER KENAI OPENING (Hooray!)
The Upper Kenai opens June 11 after a closure of almost two months. Most of the Rainbows should have completed their spawn, but some of the big ?colored? males will still be hanging around in the shallow riffles. Sight fishing to these bruisers is exciting.

Chances are there will be a good showing of Russian River bound Sockeye by opening day. These fish are silver bullets of energy that will test an 8wt to the limit. This run is usually at peak strength within a few days.

The trout that did not spawn are feeding aggressively. This is the time for variety. Trout are feeding on salmon fry and smolt, sculpin, caddis, and any flesh or eggs they can find.
Carcasses from Sockeye caught by the Kenai/Russian confluence will begin rolling downstream. This will set the trout into a flesh feeding frenzy in key drift lines.

Subject: King Salmon in the Kenai River

The kings are coming in strong, we are having a litle spell of highwater now but it should stabilize in the next few days, and the fishing should be great.
If we get this surge of highwater over now, we should have good conditions the rest of the season.

Subject: King salmon fishing heating up on the Kasilof

It looks like an early and strong run of kings are heading into the Kasilof this year.

We have been seeing (and catching) an unusually large number of kings in the Kasilof this year and it is only mid May. The fishing is not usually this hot until early June.

Almost everyone has hooked at least one king and most folks have hooked several and put one in the boat.

Our mild winter has left water temperatures a bit higher than normal which is probably contributing to the large numbers of early fish.

Not a lot of people fishing yet helps with the success rate too.

Red salmon will open on June 11 and trout on June 15. Look for an update on those or give us a call at 888-836-9027.
