Fishing with Lynn and Margie Harned and friends Dave and Jeannie Jenkins on Monday, 3/16, we had a productive morning in 45 feet out of New Pass, using live shrimp. We caught six keeper mangrove snapper between 15 and 17 inches, a dozen whitebone porgies to 15 inches and a 14 inch sheepshead. We released lots of smaller snapper, gag grouper shorts and a small hogfish, along with one unusual catch that Margie hooked—a “rock beauty,” which is a beautiful, ornamental fish that takes its name from its habitat in the rocks. The Christensen family fish wit me a few times each year and they picked a good, calm morning to head offshore on Tuesday. We headed out to 45 feet, from New Pass, with a bait tank full of shrimp and put them to good use. We caught keeper mangrove snapper to 18 inches, whitebone porgies to 18 ½ inches, a few grunts and a 15 inch hogfish. We released Spanish mackerel and king mackerel to 30 inches, along with grouper, snapper and triggerfish shorts. I had planned to fish offshore Wednesday, 3/18, but the 20 knot winds, 3-5 foot seas and small craft advisories issued that morning nipped those plans in the bud. We had experienced a couple weeks of calm seas up until then, and it looked almost as if we might completely avoid the high winds that often affect our March fishing, but no such luck. This front was weak and short-lived, though, and I managed to get back offshore Thursday, when I fished in 45 feet, nineteen miles west of New Pass, with frequent anglers Ron Musick, Richard Arnett and Eddie Alfonso. We caught fourteen keeper porgies, a keeper yellowtail snapper, four keeper mangrove snapper and three king mackerels, ranging 24 inches to 32 inches. We released lost of grouper and triggerfish shorts. Friday, I fished 37 miles out of New Pass with Harold Matthews and his son-in-law, John Winchester. We caught five nice mangrove snapper the 17-18 inch range, some big grunts and porgies for table-fare. We released a 25 pound goliath grouper, a 36 inch king mackerel, a 17 inch bluefish, and grouper shorts to 19 inches, all on live shrimp. Saturday morning brought three-to-five foot seas offshore, the result of another weak cold-front that increased winds. Dean Weaver and Scott MacIsaac traded their offshore plans for a morning of catch-and-release in Estero Bay. Catches included fifteen sheepshead, a dozen of them keeper-size, a 13 inch pompano and a 15 inch trout, all on live shrimp. The photo shown is of angler, Mike Conneally with a 20 inch mangrove snapper, caught on shrimp on a recent offshore trip. The mangs have been good-sized for several consecutive weeks.

March definitely charged in like a lion on my first scheduled day of the month. Monday, 3/2, brought extremely rough conditions offshore with seas to fifteen feet. The tide in the backwaters was low, and it was cold and windy. I cancelled my fishing trip. Conditions were somewhat better Tuesday but still not good enough, with seas of three to five feet predicted, so I spent a second consecutive day in port. Wednesday, the tide was a little better in the bay and I fished there on a catch-and-release trip with Chuck Nebes and his son, Steve. We released a dozen sheepshead to 15 inches, a small snook and an 18 inch trout, all on live shrimp. Thursday, seas were predicted to be calm, with the wind shifting and coming from the east. But, it was rough in the morning, with a 20 knot wind blowing when I headed out of New Pass with Ron Musick and friends, Eddie, Alan and Hank. It calmed down in the afternoon to less than two foot seas. We caught a few keeper mangrove snapper, grunts and eight good-sized porgies. We released bluefish, triggerfish, gag and red grouper shorts, as well as smaller mangrove snapper and porgies. Fishing central Estero Bay Friday with Ronald Haggin and his fifteen-year-old grandson, Johnny, we did well with sheepshead, catching ten of those to 18 inches and releasing lots of smaller ones, along with a crevalle jack. We also caught a 19½ inch pompano, all on shrimp. Monty Robson, his son, Stu, and six-year-old grandson, Joe, fished Estero Bay with me Saturday morning. We again caught a lot of sheepshead, kept eight of those to 17 ½ inches and released the rest. We also caught a keeper redfish at 23 inches, on live shrimp. The photo shown is of angler, Garry Jacobson, with a 15 inch hogfish (hog snapper), caught on shrimp on a recent offshore trip.

After a little time away in the relatively cool N.C. mountains, I resumed fishing this Saturday, 7/26. I fished 14 to 17 miles west of New Pass with Marty Kimball and his three young daughters, Haley, Cheyeynne and Michaela. The girls had a lot of fun using live shrimp to catch and release a bunch of big ladyfish to 30 inches. We also caught a keeper lane snapper and released a few mutton snapper that were just short of keeper size, red grouper to 19 inches, gag grouper shorts, grunts and porgies. Monday morning brought rain and I had to delay by about an hour and a half my fishing excursion with Deitnar and Andrea Binkowska, daughter Anna-Lena and young son, David. The Binkowskas were visiting from Germany and one thing David definitely wanted to do on his visit was to go fishing in the Gulf. We waited for the first round of storms to pass and there appeared to be a window for us to get some fishing done, but the weather was unsettled all morning and we couldn’t help but encounter a little more rain. Still, the group had fun at the reefs, about six miles offshore, fishing with live shrimp. We caught ten keeper mangrove snapper to 12 inches and released lots of red and gag grouper shorts. David also got to feel a few big fish on the line, but they broke off before he could reel them in. Tuesday was another unsettled day so I stayed close-in again when I fished with Doug Grieble, his eight-year-old daughter, Cera, and Dennis Baker and his three children, Rhys, Logan and Seth. Cera managed, with a little help, to pull in a 27 inch gag grouper, definitely the catch of the day! The group also caught ten nice mangrove snapper to 14 ½ inches, along with some grunts. We released four gag shorts, as well as three goliath grouper to about 35 pounds. We used shrimp for all except for the goliaths, which were caught on blue runners. I had a good morning of inshore fishing Wednesday with Chris Columbo and son, Matt and Mark Tagano and son, Anthony. We fished with live shrimp in central Estero Bay. Chris caught a 24 inch redfish, then lost a larger one when it wrapped around the anchor line right by the boat. His young son, Matt, outdid him by half an inch with a 24 ½ inch red, and he also caught a 17 inch black drum. Anthony caught a big sheepshead at 19 inches, along with one smaller one, and Mark landed a half dozen keeper mangrove snapper. Thursday, Jose Garcia and family and friends fished 17 miles west of New Pass with me. We did well with snapper and caught fourteen mangrove snapper to 15 inches, two keeper lane snapper and seven yellowtail snapper to 16 inches. We also caught two large grunts and released small snapper, gag grouper shorts and a twenty-pound goliath grouper. http://fishbustercharters.com/images/Cera-DougGrieble-27in-gag.JPG |

Fishbuster Charters’ Captain Dave Hanson reported, “Graham Connor and fifteen year old son, Brenden, fished with me in 35 feet out of New Pass on Thursday. Using live shrimp, we caught lots of Spanish mackerel to 26 inches, and keeper mangrove and lane snapper. We released kingfish, all short of the 24 inch minimum, along with ladyfish and cravalle jack. We caught four moon fish (also known as “look-downs”), and kept two of those, along with keeper mangrove and lane snapper, and Spanish mackerel to 24 inches, when Tom Coleman and friends, Don and Russ, fished with me Saturday. We also released a 4 pound goliath grouper and short red grouper. The photo shown is of angler Tom Budzynski, with a 50 + pound goliath grouper, released on a recent offshore trip.

I fished in Estero Bay Tuesday, in the area of Wiggins Pass. We used frozen shrimp, and caught two redfish, including one keeper at 18 ½ inches, three sand bream, keeper sheepshead and snapper, and released snook to 21 inches. I fished Estero Bay again Wednesday. A five year old angler on board caught the biggest redfish—a 24 incher (photo attached)—along with a keeper sheepshead. We released smaller reds and sheepshead, along with sand bream and a 20 inch barracuda, all on frozen shrimp, in the area of Wiggins Pass. Fishing Estero Bay again Thursday, we used green-backs and shrimp to catch a 19 ½ inch redfish and a 17 ½ inch trout. We lost one big red and one big snook when they got tangled in the mangroves and broke off. Friday, fishing the bay again, we used greenbacks to catch a 19 inch trout. We released small snook and some jack cravalle, and Becca battled a couple of bigger snook. I fished the bay in the Wiggins Pass area on Saturday. We caught a keeper redfish, at 19 inches and 22 inches, using shiners. We released five small snook and a 15 inch jack cravalle.

Wednesday, I fished in 35 feet off Naples. Despite forecasts for afternoon rains, we were chased in by building storms before noon. Seas were sloppy, and it wasn’t real comfortable out there for the kids on board, but we managed to catch a flounder, keeper mangrove snapper, porgies and grunts, and released gag shorts. I fished off Bonita the rest of this week, so check the report for there for details. The photo attached is of an 18 inch sheepshead, caught on a recent backwater trip.

Fish Report - High Hopes Charters - Capt. Lindy Yow Friday, January 27th - Shannon Fitch, Brandon Fitch, Allison Fitch and Capt. Mike Litty fished the near shore reefs onboard the High Hopes 2 with Capt. Lindy. It was an unusual day for weather going from light breeze to dead calm to a 20 knot east wind late in the day. The reefs were slow but they managed to pick up several nice Sheephead to 16 inches and a couple of Sea Trout, the biggest was 23 inches. When the wind picked up we headed to shore to try some backwater fishing. We hit the out going tide just right. One stop produced 3 keeper Sea Trout, an 18 and 20 inch red fish, Mangrove Snapper, several under sized Snook and about 2 dozen large lady fish. Again, fishing seamed to improve as the day progressed. |

I fished Tuesday 17 miles off Naples, west of New Pass. We caught a keeper red grouper, keeper mangrove and yellowtail snapper, porkfish, and whitebone porgies, all on live shrimp, and released lots of gag and red grouper shorts in the 19 to 21 inch range. We also released a 50+ pound goliath grouper, which we caught on a blue runner. I fished Thursday 19 miles west of New Pass. We caught two hogfish, 13 and 16 inches, keeper mangrove snapper, grunts, and porkfish, all on live shrimp. We released gag grouper to 19 inches and red grouper to 16 inches. Seas started to build toward the end of our trip, in advance of the next cold front. By Friday, seas were building to 4 to 6 feet, with 6-9 feet predicted on Saturday, and small-craft advisories were issued, so I stayed in port. The asttached photo is of a 23 inch gag and 3 mangrove snapper, caught on live shrimp last week, about 18 miles west of New Pass.

Monday, fishing off Naples, 17 out of New Pass with live shrimp, we caught ten mangrove snapper to 15 inches, porgies and large white grunts—No keeper grouper, but we released lots of shorts. A weather front predicted to pass through our area this Wednesday arrived early, and I faced gusty 15 to 20 knot winds and rough 3-5 foot seas Tuesday, fishing off Naples. We caught lane snapper, triggerfish, grunts and porgies, but it was not comfortable out there for long. I cancelled my offshore trip for Wednesday, with more of the same predicted. Friday, with seas still rough in the morning, I fished inshore in central Estero Bay. We released three redfish to just short of keeper size, one keeper-sized but out-of-season trout, two stingray, jack cravalle, and mangrove snapper. I fished offshore Saturday, 17 miles off Naples. We caught some nice snapper-- mangrove snapper to 16 inches and five lane snapper to 18 inches. We also caught porgies and triggerfish, and released grouper shorts. Sunday, seas were predicted to be 2-3 feet, but it was pretty sloppy out there, with occasional 6 foot swells. I fished 17 miles off Naples again, using live shrimp. We caught snapper, which was the main catch this week—mangroves and lanes, along with porgies and triggerfish. Winter brings the big sheepshead around. The photo attached is of a 20 1/2 inch sheepie we got last week in Estero Bay.

I fished Monday with Connie Benedict and son, Fred, in 35 to 45 feet out New Pass. There was no wind, and a very slow tide. It was smooth as glass out there, and the bite was slow. We managed to catch keeper lane snapper and some good sized whitebone porgies, and released a small flounder. It seems like there is either too much wind, or not enough of it! I fished Estero Bay Tuesday, by the channel, with Todd Kempfert and young son, Nick. We caught and released three Spanish mackerel, all 22-23 inches, five small snook, and ladyfish, using live shrimp and shiners. By Wednesday, we were back to too much wind—Predictions were for 5-10 knots, with 2-3 foot seas, but we fished in 15 –20 knots, with 4-5 foot seas, 32 miles off Naples, out New Pass. Tybe Larson, Jeff Sandeen, Dean Pauly, and Larry Vigliotti used live shrimp and other live bait that I netted to catch keeper lane and mangrove snapper, and a 25 inch king mackerel. One angler had a larger kingfish hooked, but lost it. We released gag grouper shorts and a 40 inch lemon shark. Thursday, it was calmer, and I fished 17 miles off Naples with Marlin, Dan & Brett Cunningham. We caught some nice fish on live shrimp and pinfish. We got some larger mangrove snapper, at about 16 inches, a couple of yellowtail to 14 inches, keeper lane snapper, Spanish mackerel to 21 inches, triggerfish and grunts. We released gag grouper to 19 inches and red grouper to 18 inches. We also released three goliath grouper. Friday, I fished with Jeff Holzinger and friends Kathy & Margie, 25 miles off Naples, with live shrimp. We caught a keeper cobia at 35 inches, some nice mangrove snapper, and porkfish. We released a smaller, 28 inch cobia, a 3 foot lemon shark, and grouper shorts. The photo below is of a pair of red grouper we caught 10/23.

We used a blue runner as bait to also catch and release a 12 lb. goliath grouper.

Thursday, 9/8, I fished with Peter Haluenen, Mark & Alicia Hodge, Mike Wlodyka, and friends Jack, J.K., and another Jack. We fished with live shrimp in 37 feet off Naples, and steadily caught keeper lane snapper and mangrove snapper. By Friday, we were again hunkering down for the approach of Ivan the Terrible...Is this deja vous, or what? |

Monday, with a stubborn clump of storms stalled offshore, I stayed in port, but fished Tuesday with the Jeff Padavic party, 28 miles west of New Pass in 55-67 feet. We didn’t get any keeper red groupers, like I was catching in that area last week, but we released lots of them to 18 inches. Using live shrimp and cut-bait, we did catch some nice yellowtail snapper and lane snapper, along with Spanish mackerel and triggerfish. Wednesday, I fished with the George Reiff party. We headed out New Pass about 22 miles. There were thunderstorms predicted about 27 miles out, but we saw spotty ones as close as ten miles out. As we headed out, there was a big storm over Sanibel and a big one to the south. We got through a clearing right between the two storms, looked behind us, and saw three small water spouts dropping from the sky. We saw one of those make it down to froth the water. We caught nineteen lane snapper before the rain started building around us. We saw four more water spouts to the south, and the rains offshore were moving in on us, so we headed in about 11:30 AM, and were lucky enough to stay dry. The Jose Garcia party fished Thursday with me, 23 miles out New Pass in 57 feet. We had to keep an eye on the storms again, but managed to get a good part of the day to fish. We caught thirty-two lane snapper to 12 inches and seven mangrove snapper to 14 inches, using live shrimp. I fished the rest of this week off Bonita Beach--still caught lots of snappper there too, but also a nice gag (can see photo on Bonita Beach page.)

My offshore trips for Monday and Tuesday were cancelled, due to a weather front that brought rain, winds, and rough seas. Wednesday, happy to see the sun, I fished with Ron & Michelle Prestamer and family, in 27 feet off Naples. We released about twenty yellowtail snapper just short of keeper size, along with red grouper to 17 inches, and caught mangrove snapper, porkfish, and grunts. The porpoise were relentless out there—fun to watch, but an annoyance in terms of fishing. The rest of the week, I fished off Bonita Beach, so check out the report and pics there. Attached is one of the red groupers we've been catching the past couple weeks, off Naples and Bonita Beach.

Fishing Monday 20 to 25 miles off Naples with Kurt & Jenni, Eric, Rachel & Alex Robinson, and friend, Devin Cegelis, we caught keeper mangrove snapper to 16 inches, some nice keeper lane snapper, large whitebone porgies, and a 23 inch red grouper, all on live shrimp. We released lots of additional red and gag grouper that were not quite keeper size, along with two sharpnose sharks, each about 3 foot. The Greg Devol party fished with me Tuesday, on a catch & release trip off Naples in 35 feet. We caught hogfish, triggerfish, Spanish mackerel and mangrove snapper. The Beck family—Ron, Sharon, Bill, Sonia, Desi & Chase—fished with me Thursday, 28 miles off Naples, where we used live shrimp to catch keeper mangrove snapper, keeper lane snapper and grunts. One highlight of the trip was the siting of a sailfish: in all the years I have been fishing this area, I have never seen one of those. This one was circling, about 15 feet off the boat when I spotted him. I had a handful of shrimp ready to bait hooks with, so I threw them out toward him, and he flared his dorsal fin, and showed us his beautiful sail—Then he was gone. Recently, another area captain reported siting a wahoo in local waters too. These are surely unusual in our area. Saturday, on a catch & release trip with Dick Wilson and friends Albry and Jill, we braved some heavy rain and stormy seas for a while. We released mangrove snapper, porkfish, triggerfish, grunts and red grouper shorts. We also caught blue runners, which we used for bait to catch a 5 foot nurse shark, and we fought goliath grouper twice. Check our Bonita report too. The photo attached is of one of the 23 inch red groupers.

I fished Monday, 7/5, with Gregg Bedell, 28 miles off Naples. We spotted a school of about a hundred little tunnys about 20 miles offshore, dropped a couple of live shrimp over, and caught two of them, estimated at 8-10 pounds. We headed out another 8 miles or so, fished with Spanish sardines, and caught three limits of mangrove snapper to 16 inches, keeper lane snapper, and a 28 inch, 14 pound red grouper (see photos attached). We released a 3 foot lemon shark and a 4 foot lemon shark, along with two limits of mangroves, then headed in through the afternoon thunderstorms. Tuesday, I fished 10 miles off Naples with Mick, Katie & Kevin Moritz. We caught keeper mangrove snapper and triggerfish, Spanish mackerel to 24 inches, and porkfish. The Debbie Mares party fished with me Wednesday, in 45 feet off Naples, with live shrimp. We caught keeper mangrove snapper, triggerfish, jolthead porgies, and grunts. We released red and gag grouper shorts. I fished Thursday with David Manning and his two sons, about 10 miles off Naples. We caught three large triggerfish, a 24 inch Spanish mackerel, porkfish and porgies, and released lots of small fish, including a hogfish and a moonfish. That was the second moonfish I caught this week. I had always thought these were more common on the Atlantic side. Bob Yoder and sons, Dave & Jim, fished with me Friday in some unpredicted rough seas. With predictions for 2’ or less, we faced 3-5 foot seas all morning. We caught three large triggerfish, a 24 inch Spanish mackerel, porkfish and porgies, and released lots of small fish of various types. After a couple of weeks fishing the Florida Keys on a busman’s holiday, Captain Dave Hanson returned to local waters Monday, 6/21, when he fished with the Tim Malley party at the 240 ledge off Naples. We caught keeper mangrove snapper, a hogfish, porgies, porkfish, grunts, and released red grouper shorts, all on live shrimp. Porpoise were everywhere out there, which is scenic, but disruptive to fishing! Check out out report for Bonita Beach, where the permit hit for a short while. I fished Wednesday with the Dick Leonard party, around several ledges and about 29 miles off Naples in 70 feet. Conditions were much improved over our recent high winds and seas, but still a bit sloppy out there. We used live shrimp, and had a great time catching several banded ruder fish (similar to amberjack). We also caught keeper mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, and lane snapper, triggerfish, porkfish, and porgies, until a goliath grouper showed up to eat everything we tried to reel in. I fished off Bonita and Ft. Myers Beach for shark this week too, so check the report there too. For full info and fish photo-album, please visit www.fishbustercharters.com

Winds and seas were again kicked up all week. Tuesday, the Jim Cayeves party fished with me, 17 miles off Naples in three to four (mostly four) foot seas and a stiff wind. There were so many blue runners out there that it compromised catching the good stuff somewhat, but we managed nine keeper mangrove snapper, a few nice porgies, and released small gag and red grouper and Spanish mackerel. I deferred a couple trips at the end of this week to next week, hoping for calmer conditions, but I did head out Saturday with the Grant Wise party to the ledges off Naples. We stayed closer in the first part of the trip, as seas and swells were still pretty rough, but we moved out toward the 240 ledge after it calmed a bit. Fishing was slow most of the day, but we caught mangrove snapper, triggerfish, porgies and porkfish. We released lots of short gags and blue runners. I fished a couple days off Bonita Beach this week, with some better luck there, so check out that report too. For full info and fish photo-album, please visit www.fishbustercharters.com

I fished Friday, 17 miles off Naples with Howard & Judy Thompson. Baiting with live shrimp, we caught and released a 31 inch little tunny, which spooled the line twice before we finally got it to the boat. In the midst of landing that little tunny, a flying fish, in a frenzy to get away from the bonito it thought was chasing it, slammed into the side of the boat, knocking himself out. We did our best to revive the little guy, and got a good look at this very interesting bird-like fish. We were broken off twice by big fish, and we also caught keeper mangrove snapper, large triggerfish, and a couple of 14 inch whitebone porgies. Saturday, I fished 19 miles out New Pass in 51 feet with Harold & Rhonda Bolin. We caught nine mangrove snapper, triggerfish, porgies and a 14 inch porkfish. We released lots of gag grouper to 19 inches. The big sheepshead we saw abundantly last month have quit biting. Attacjhed is a photo of one of the last ones we caught, weighing 5 lbs. The 2-3 foot seas predicted for Monday were actually 4-5 foot. I fished in rough waters 20 miles off Naples with the John & Carla Bolan party. We caught keeper mangrove snapper to 17 inches and large porgies. We released 15 gag grouper to 21 inches (see photo attached), along with loads of blue runners. The Bolan party had originally planned to fish Tuesday also, but decided they’d had enough of those rough conditions on Monday. The winds and seas persisted through Thursday.
