Subject: UP-DATE REPORT

2-24-03 Calaveras/ Braunig, & S. Tx. Rivers

Greetings to all; South Texas is soon to start busting loose at all it's seams! It's great to report that the rivers are continuing to produce above average numbers of White bass, for the length of time we've been catching them. Water levels are still extremely high and most all of the river is holding whites in the deeper pockets. The past couple of days were beautiful and the numbers of fish was great. We are still averaging about 40-80 nice keepers per day trip. Using about 3 different techniques with all artificial, all are producing fish. From the progress stages in the fishes egg development; it looks as though these fish are going to still be in the river for at least 3-4 more weeks!

Red fish & Stripers; this is what most anglers are calling for and eagerly anticipating the start of spring season. Temperatures and water thermal positions are "almost" there. This week clarity was good, temperatures are close, and there is plenty of bait fish to hold the 'brutes' once the start moving out of the holding areas. New tackle is ready, the boat has been cleaned, motors are flushed and tuned; now all we need is to add fish and water and mix completely! Reservations are starting to get posted regularly through the coming months in anticipation of the spring start. March is almost here and so is the start of another incredible fishing season!

So, until your next nibble occurs; may screaming drags and monstrous fish romp in your dreams!!! Take care, Jeff

Subject: Report 12-30-02

Greetings; best to all in the New Year. May peace on earth and "no-nukes" be the Lord's way.

"Our special holiday gift (year 2003) certificate for our "premium" package is still available for $50 off ! Visit our web page for more info: < www.texasfishingguides.org/snyder/ >
Fishing! That's what everyone is getting anxious for. We are booking trips as weather permits and client time allows. Be aware; we're in a transition period with fishing getting better. Call for up dated info.
As for the weather and water temperature being the determining factor, things may be starting to change. We haven't yet had any severe freezes from the north. If the 'El Nino' pattern stays in charge, we might get the early surge of Red fish we had last January. We boated just over " 4000 " Reds this past year !!!
As of 12-30-02 there has been early action for ' white bass' on our river trips. They haven't filled in real heavy yet; last year they stayed scattered. We are working Choke Canyon area, between the deer hunts. It' been beautiful out, river has been calm and staying pretty clear; it makes for a great river adventure for those looking for something new. Yet, I really feel that we are going to see some 'reds' this next month.
The boats are getting cleaned, new electronics are installed, baits are being re-stocked, and lubrication of drags are being done to prepare for those "spring screamers!"
There are some stripers being caught bottom fishing with bait; good days and slow days; but that's typical in spring.
The year 2002 showed us "at least" four stockings of "Reds" from what I have gathered from the fisheries guys. Numbers look as though there were 3-4 times the numbers we normally get at Braunig and Calaveras.
Please stay in touch for your next great adventure. So, ..... may screaming drags and monstrous fish romp in your dreams!

......keep your worms frisky!

SOUTHWEST FISHING CHARTERS Report 9-23-02
Lakes: Calaveras & Braunig in San Antonio, Tx.

Greetings; Time not only flies when having fun, and fishing too!

No excuses; I wish I was able to update this report daily.

Summer was milder than usual, but still served up water temps in the upper 90's for about 4 weeks. The reds really fell off, the stripers disappeared, but the big blue cats hung in there pretty strong. Robyn Harred of San Antonio put the 'whammy' on one of the nicest blues of the summer. She may only be eleven, but this little gal really was taught properly on how to handle a rod. Her big Blue Cat hit a silver spoon trolling at about 25 feet. Leaving her about 30 minutes of rod bending time to think about it before she got her first look at old whisker face; 23 pounds of cat fish nuggets! The blues are still in deep water until the temp dips later in the fall.

The red fish bite this year has been none like I have ever seen in the last 15 years of guiding; to date we have caught approximately 1,170, this year alone. They started early in February and stayed strong till the summer heat topped the 98 degree mark in August. Then the rains came. Boy did they! After all settled down, temps dropped, water cleared, and the action was back.

Stripers were slower than normal this year. The rebound looks as though we're in for a good fall pattern. On the better days, we're seeing up to 20 on a half day trip. Most of them have been keepers, being the good thing. As for the smaller fish; hope this absence isn't a sign for next year. The fisheries crew reports that their gill net studies shows numbers "UP" above normal in the lake. The striper bite has been good this past week and looking to really get good since temps are coming down. I was told striper stockings were down this year due to new hatchery systems being re-built. With all plans on time, we should be back to above normal striper stockings come spring.

Reds! That's what most clients want to hear. We have caught more reds in the past week than we have caught in the last month!!!! It's a shame the reds can't pull off a real spawn in these lakes. Due to the lack of salinity in our lakes; the eggs won't fertilize. This is why we get those wonderful stockings of juvenile fish each spring. Fall brings all the reds into a 'hormonal' pattern beckoning for them to due what nature guides them into each fall. The school sizes we are seeing has been terrific! The females eggs appear to be about 70-80% developed. This is the good news. We should have these fish schooling for maybe another month! The males are starting to really drip with milk when boated. This pattern has these fish in an extremely finicky (hormonal) mood. We have been trolling through the school 2-3 times with no hits, then the next pass may yield 2-3 hits at the same time. Last week, Dr. Rocky Mariscal fished a 5 hour trip; yielding 19 hook-ups, boating 10 reds from 8-16 lbs. with up to 3 on at a time. Keeping three reds for 45 pounds sounds like a fish fry to me. Then, Michael Swetman with two buddies took the boys out, ending up a 4 hour trip with 10 reds that went 8-14 pounds. This is where the "no upper slot" in fresh water adds spice to a trip.

To sum it all up; falls here, temps are in control of the patterns we are seeing. It's been pretty good the past week, with projections of these patterns to last into early November, as long as we don't get hit with multiple harsh cold fronts before then, driving lake temperatures down too low.

Electronics is the big key to locating these fish. Bait fish have been schooling tight and moving out into the deeper water. Watch for structure changes and fish below the thermocline. With temps dropping; remember to reduce lure speed, size, and line size. Your drag will make or break you this time of year. Don't go at them as a muscle man, think, soften your technique, and enjoy the fight! Most clients think my equipment is too light; until they slow down and get a real experience of a great fight where you need to "think" about what you're doing. I have broke most of my clients of this "deep sea pumping stuff" they think you have to do. Let the equipment do what it's designed for and leave that TV garbage at home. You'll feel more, experience more, learn more, and really appreciate the power these fish have to offer. Memories last longer than the fight.

So until the next nibble occurs, may screaming drags and monstrous fish romp in your dreams!

Take care, start winterizing your boat and equipment, and don't forget the kids in your outdoors adventures!

Subject: Fishing report 12 june 02

Summers here; so what's happening?

Lakes : Calaveras/Braunig in San Antonio, Tx
Water temp : 88 degrees
Water clarity : Good-slight green

Been feeling 'Blues' and seeing Reds! 13 June 02

No, it's not an old folk song or an emotional state, unless filling an empty cooler plays a tune you want to here. Again, these wonderful warm water power plants have been putting a strain on our tackle and most clients backs.

June is nearly half over with 3 of the best months of the year still in front of us, for fishing. The temps got an early jump on water conditions due to the shortage of rain. Our normal summer patterns are setting in early and the fish have started the heated transition to deeper water. There are good points and bad points to this. The shortage of rain and addition of high pressure has allowed temps to rise early, causing some of our late spring patterns to be omitted this year. Oh well; guess we'll just have to put up with the bigger fish, sooner than expected.

Patterns have shown incredible numbers of quality fish, mainly being the keepers size Reds and an early stacking in the river channel of the Blue cats, we see through the summer.
Cats are being found with sonar units, suspending off the edges of deep structure. Making a fun time of it using lighter tackle and dropping bait down into these schools. The better Blues are running about 8-15 lbs. with the big boys expected to arrive soon. Bait of choice has been mainly cut bait and "Magic Dough Bait."

Reds; oh what a year! I have been keeping a rough tally of fish 'boated' this year; this is not fish kept! As of yesterday, my main boat alone I stand close to "860" Reds this year, with no more than about 50 being under sized fish, so far! Most keepers have been 23-31 inch fish, with the better ones up to 23 lbs. We're still counting, if it continues, I'll have to take my shoes of to keep good count.

Thank goodness for the stringent limit of 3 Reds, which has allowed the population of these beauties to have grown into what it has. It's a shame the "Exotic Corvina" program was never regulated or the fisherman themselves didn't respect it's possibilities and try to nurture it when they were still in the lake. Instead it was usually a 'greed-fest' and the un-educated few, pillaged the schools in massive numbers and continuously stripped the lake of these fish in a short period of time; possibilities would have allowed this fish to maybe reach weights of 40 lbs. Plus! It would have been hard to take...
Back to the Reds; Thanks to our Texas Fisheries workers who have managed this program so well. A second thanks for the "ADDITIONAL" stockings of the donated Reds which looked to be in the 5-10 inch range instead of the normal fry size. Our next two years look as though they are going to be better than this year. Reds have been very consistent in hitting the same lure patterns as in the past; Shad & Perch imitations. They have been tight on the thermals when moving and a narrow window of 2-4 feet has produced the majority of the fish. Thank God for Texas, Shimano reels, Lowrance electronics, and Cannon down riggers.

Stripers, now you see them, now you don't. In the past week, we had two days where they showed up, producing 27 keepers, then they were gone again. As for the future; looks as though Texas hatcheries are back on line and future stockings should show greatly increased fry availability.

Service, parts, down riggers, electronics, superior polarized eye wear, and unit installation is available through us. If you need any help, just call.

Summer's here, we've all waited for it. Don't forget to take the kids fishing and make it educational, also. Please let's all try to put more of the ethical ways and abiding to the laws into practice in front of the kids. It breaks my heart to see what a lot of "ADULTS" do and knowing violate the laws in front of their own and other children. I hear so often; "It's ok if you don't get caught!" Then people wonder why kids are doing on the streets all they do now a days. Maybe read the regulation book closer, examples are like the daily bag limit is "3 Reds" and ""NO"" it is not legal to take the guides limit home. That would put you above 3, right? Laws are tough, maybe, at least most people can live with in them. Make this year a safe one!

** look out for your pets and childs safety this summer
** Use plenty of sun screen; it's the 2nd application at least 20 minutes after the first that protects!
** Keep your line fresh and teach a kid to tie a "Palomar" knot, it's all they need
** Keep your live Shrimp cool with ice in zip-lock bags so you don't dilute the salt water level in the tank.
** Periodically, wash your transducers face with dish soap for sharper pictures
"" Clean your sonar screens with Meguiar's auto polish/cleaner, in the maroon bottle.

Till next time, may monstrous fish and screaming drags romp in your dreams, Jeff

SWFC fishing report 7 May 02

Water temp: 85 degress
Clarity: slight stain
Action: good
Species: Red fish & Hybrid Stripers

This is going to be brief but potent.

Summer has seemed to set in rather fast this year. I'm praying for some relief from the heat and hopefully a little rain for the fish and my hay fields. The dryness has left the dust piled high and my cows are all carrying their own water bottles with them down in the pasture. Heat makes things happen; hot fish action has been the main thing. The spring Hybrid run was short with 2-3 weeks of serious heavy weight stripers sizzling the drags of our light tackle outfits. Plastic grubs delivered the menu with a variety of colors working from day to day. The Hybrids have dispersed to deeper water and will be readily found using electronics searching deep structure. This is a prime situation where our experience using our "Cannon" down riggers for delivering lures to these deep targets really pays off. Those wishing to bait fish will find shad and chicken livers still very productive on the "edges" of deep structure.
Reds!!!!! What can a guide really pray for????? The Lord's bounty this year is delivering an incredible abundance of beefy and hell-bent for leather red fish, ripping the drags extremely consistently. Limits of reds are pretty regular right now. We may complain about the heat and lack of rain, but it has kept the Reds in a predictable pattern. There is a great number of 5-7 lb. fish showing daily; with brutes up to 22# beating at the doors. Summer is coming and believe it or not, things are only going to get better!
As the heat sets in, the Reds are moving more to hard baits and at a faster presentation. In the past 14 years of chasing and studying these marvelous creatures, I feel I have taken the down rigging business to a new dimension. With the aid of incredible electronics and application of strict attention to detail; we are venturing into the fishes world and domain as no angler has ever done before!
Different? I'm definitely different and enjoy exploring, inventing, and developing new techniques and lure presentations, to be your connection to one of the greatest fresh water red fish adventures you'll most likely ever encounter. As I've been told many a time; people haven't realized the that there was such a difference in what guides have had to offer. My techniques and talents show through once they have tried another in order to compare. We offer two guides and boats with the best in state of the art electronics to try and fulfill your dreams and angling adventures.
With the good Lord willing and hopes that the creeks don't rise; we'll do everything we can to make your dreams come true in 2002. Good fishing, good luck, and bless the children..........

Till the next nibble occurs, may monstrous fish and screaming drags, romp in your dreams........ <*)(((((>< Jeff

Subject: SWFC report 4-01-02 Lakes Braunig / Calaveras, San Antonio, Tx

Greetings; Spring has dealt us a full house and the "screaming " wouldn't stop!
No it's not the kids or the car's tires. Drags, reels, smoke, and line blistering off the Shimano Mag 50 reels! It's been making me see 'red' and fortunately it's not just the wind in my eyes.
The wind has been blowing it's share, the thermometers had forgot which way was up, and the '3-in-1' oil can got a good squeezing that lasted almost three weeks. Ok, ok....... what am I babbling about this time? Reds and I don't mean just a couple of them. Why they started as early as they did and stayed as aggressive as they have been; has been confusing, but sooooo soothing. To sum it up; only 3 stripers (undersize) and easily well over 200 Freshwater Red fish; "NONE UNDERSIZE. " Average weights were 5-14 lb. each, feeding through out the day, daily for almost 20 days straight! Yes, don't ask; it really was fantastic and none the less, most enjoyable.
I pinched myself more than once, and yes; they didn't stop!
Roaring in as a lion and going out as a lamb generalizes our March weather. The early message the Reds sent this year was none close to any I've seen in the last 14 years. Granted, I didn't know then what I know now, but I would have still have caught some fish with them acting the way they did. Action suddenly started with the last warm period that February gave us and was almost constant until the winter blast on March 15th and the tornado's that rearranged southern Bexar county. Weather looks as though the spring rains are close to starting which in turn will help warm and oxygenate the water. Action will definitely transition into spring spawns and thermal stacking of the fish. The new Lowrance "X-15" sonar will make your knees weak with anticipation looking at the structural detail and fish concentrations lurking below the surface.
( Check out the new picture at top of web page.)
Talking with the Texas Fisheries crew at the lake; reveals they did see an above normal number of Hybrids on their spring samplings. Should be promising for summer patterns. The story with the Reds is a chapter about to be written that will go into the memories album and probably be talked about for many years to come. It started with the abundance of 'f'ry' stocking fish at the hatcheries a couple years back. Information from the lake rangers then showed about "2 1/2 times" normal number of Reds were stocked. Last year I had 1/2 day charters that some were catching 40-60 fish a trip with 1 out of 10 being bigger keeper fish. This year, all of those fish barely short in legal length last year, are about 3-6 lbs. this year. Yes; just terrible. But hey, somebody has to catch them. A patriot I am; I willfully volunteer.
Big fish; haven't seen them yet; a few about 16#, but no "Hogs" yet. The deep schooling fish we seen last year with body weights averaging 11-24 lbs. each should be a "reel" treat this year. Settling for regular limits of these 4-10's has made it easier to cope with the situation; till the hog's decide to dance!
Yes, 2002 looks as though it could be a "Bengay" type year. We have caught more Hybrids in the last week than we caught in the previous 2 months. Hybrid action is ready to blow wide open and freezer stocking time will be here. Fish are just now starting to show any signs of grouping. Movement has been from bottom feeding patterns to some suspension, below the thermocline which will shift to above it with a jolt of warmer spring water and weather. Hard to accept that it was only March; seemed more like May action. Remembering to use light tackle, slower presentations, smaller lures and an arsenal of color patterns will get the cool weather Hybrids started. The Reds weren't real picky at first, now they're going through a selective color thing; really keeps you working till a color starts producing. That has to be the biggest tip to spring time fish, "change," anything and everything till something starts putting fish in the box. After harsh weather changes, it's usually best to go to bottom fishing bait if numbers of keepers are important in your day out. As summer approaches, go to bigger, brighter, and faster type baits. Give your lure a good variety of presentations, if the fish don't like them, you shouldn't keep using it. Lure presentations fit the old proverb; " there's more than one way to skin a cat." Experiment; then remember what works!
Cats; weren't forgotten.Channels are usually good with liver and cut baits on bottom and dough under a cork, along the banks in spring while they're spawning. The bottom fishing trips are showing as mix of Channels, a few Blues, and Hybrids with good action on the lighter tackle. The big Blues we catch will usually start their deep pattern in May-July, with warm weather co-operating.
Sorry, need to go. I do hope to be more consistent with these reports, but I'd rather tell you in person on the lake!!!!!! So till the next drag screams, may monster fish romp in your dreams! Jeff

P.S.
*** Check out Trilene's new "Big Game" line; the 'Hi-vis' blue color is fantastic; my only line.
*** Teach a kid to tie a knot; a Palomar, moistened before tightening is all they need.
*** Caution is highly advised against using "hi-octane" in an 2 cycle motors; settle for mid or reg.
*** When was the last time your checked your prop hub for line or lower unit for water signs?
*** Marine wheel bearing grease ""IS"" different from regular grease; use a "Buddy."
*** Want to keep grease splatters from axles off your boat, carefully cut the bottom off a soda can, punch a small hole on the outside edge and slide over the wheel hub as an exterior cover.
*** What's a monster fish worth? Only costs about 50 cents to fill a reel with fresh Trilene.
*** Kids are unknowingly rough on fishing line, they need 'high abrasion," like "Big Game"
*** Teach them about a proper drag; keep the "line size to hook ratio" in balance and the drag will save them that next big fish.
So, till the next nibble occurs. <*)((((>< Jeff

Fishing Report Saturday, June 09, 2001 Lakes: Braunig and Calaveras
Location: 20 minutes Southeast of San Antonio, Tx.

Greetings from "Back Achers Ranch" in San Antonio; this is Jeff. The saying about , "how time flies when you're having fun;" really does apply to this current phase we're in.

REDS, WHITES, & BLUES!!!!!!!
It's not even the 4th of July yet. Reds have been the main action with the start of our Blue cat season, beating down the door with a close second. In my last report I mentioned on how things we're only going to get better and believe me; the're much better than I had expected!

There are many great days to come, unfortunately also having some not so great ones mixed in. Fishing trips aren't just about filling an ice chest, though enjoyable. Take time to share some knowledge, trade some tactics, check over your gear, but most of all; do it with some kids or our seniors!

I have found over the years that it's not a disability that keeps anyone from fishing; but rather a lack of help or one's desire. I believe strongly; that if there is a will, there's a way!!!!!
The survival rate of our stocked reds last year appears to have exceeded any that we've seen in the past 6-7 years. There is an incredible abundance of rat-reds scattered all over the lake. I have actually been estimating our number of fish per "hour" rather than the number per "trip." Catch rates the past couple of weeks probably average out somewhere around 10-25 fish per hour!!! The better reds have been in the 9-14 lb. range with the big fish ranging from 18-24 lbs. With the heat coming on, I'm greatly looking forwards to June, July, August, and September; and the "Monsters of the deep," that I specialize in. Namely, the big reds and blue cats as they search for cool water pockets. The stripers had laid off for a week or so, but have been picking up this past week, with some big fish being found from time to time; keeper fish average 4-6 lbs. Seeing blue in a great way; deep schools of Blue Cats have started showing with some terrific action getting more and more regular with the better fish from 6-24 lbs. With water temps above or around the 90 degree mark, a good electronics pattern will put you on some great schools of all these fish.

Subject: "SPRING STRIPER AND EARLY REDFISH SPECIAL"

**SOUTHWEST FISHING CHARTERS**
"SPRING STRIPER AND EARLY REDFISH SPECIAL"
Special package price, good through 15 Feb. 2001
January 2001 Up-date: Jan. 11, 2001
Spring is banging at the door, blowing in the wind, nipping at our noses, and has started our drags screaming! This report follows a really fun day this week out at the lake, with the "Sanchez family" of San Antonio.
Seasonal weather looks as though it may be advancing more in our favor everyday. The first week of January has brought some good Striper action and even a few early Reds thrown in. The fish are scattered in their early spring pre-spawn patterns, riding the thermals, with the sows really showing an advanced stage of egg maturity for this time of year. The males have already started dripping 'milk' as their being removed from the net. Hopefully this is a sign of an early stacking pattern like we had start the last of January in 1999. That was a terrific year, with the Striper pattern holding till late in April.
The key right now, is all with the water temperatures starting to approach the 70 degree mark. Once it starts consistently staying above the 70 mark, things should really take off. I've always refered to the 70-75 temperature range as the "witching temps;" as from day to day, you could expect the 'ballistic' period to begin. So, from this point on, with the weather service showing our storms coming from the southern Pacific rather than the northern Rockies, everyone needs to start tuning up their fishing gear, preparing for spring Stripers!

Now through the middle of February we are offering our "deluxe" half day packages for 1-5 people for $150 complete. This special includes the purchase of "advanced trip certificates" valid anytime in the year 2001.

So, until the next nibble occurs, may screaming drags and monstrous fish romp in your dreams!!! ....................your guide to future adventures: Jeff Snyder <*(((((((((((((><
