I'm going fishing at Weybourne Hope next weekend, May Day weekend. Does anyone know what I'm likely to catch, or what I should be aiming to catch? Apparently it's a shingle beach that gets deep very quickly with a strong current. I'm a complete beginner at fishing.

Thanks

Chris

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT
Fishing remains good, however the catchword is still patchy, some days good others not. Often from the beaches in Suffolk, anglers have had very good days followed by days where almost nothing has been caught, this more of course during daylight hours. It mainly fits in with the state of the sea, in the calmer weather fish have been much more difficult to catch, with even the smaller whiting not showing.
Another point of interest is the very early showing of the very small codling around 3-5 inches, normally these fish show much later in the season, due to their size do not show in the nets. It could be a sign of greater numbers of these fish, note only a possible sign, which could be good news if true.
Southend boats for whiting, dogfish and some codling. A charter boat of Canvey landed 400 whiting and 27 codling to 7lb, good enough by any ones standards. The fish fell to lug, mackerel and squid Southend beaches for good catches of whiting at night, best time to fish with a high tide around eleven to three at night. Lug and mackerel strip the best bait and you just need to get beyond the breakwaters. Russell Clark almost won the Golden Peg match at Fambridge with a catch of three whiting for 1lb 3 1/2oz. Overall winner was Tom Barker with four whiting for 1lb 12oz. More match news is that Kent angler Dave Macken won the Essex Summer League. Terry Knott won the last match at Tilbury with 743cm, which included 14 flounders, 13 whiting and even a sole. Dave’s final count was 631cm. And Gary Lloyd came in third with 620cm. The Essex team again with a combined length of 590cm won the Thames Estuary Research Experiment fished at Gravesend. Fish such as eel, flounders, whiting, bass, sole, rockling and pouting were caught measured and returned.
All known marks westwards from Canvey will fish for whiting at the moment with the chance of some codling mainly at night. More news from Barry at Stanford Tackle on 01375 676739. River Crouch anglers can expect whiting from the shore maybe a codling if you are lucky. Boats staying mainly in the river where whiting, and the odd roker, codling and dogfish can be expected. One or two private boats finding more in the way of codling if they travel to the Clacton coast.
Boat anglers out from Bradwell are catching bumper loads of whiting with up to 50 whiting per session mainly on lug and mackerel strip, although these hungry fish will be caught on anything. Another couple of weeks or so and the numbers will start drooping off a bit. Cod catches are up to 15 per day per boat, some of the fish are around 5-6lb. Again the best catches coming from marks of the Clacton and Jaywick coast. Offshore some roker up to 8lb are being caught, not to many cod offshore but the ones that have been caught are in the 6-10lb range and in very good condition.
The normally successful Martello Tower end of Clacton has been rather slow of late so head for the Holland Haven end by the Sluice gates, where fishing has been good at night for codling and whiting. Victoria Road has fished better than others in the day and also Clacton Pier in the day. Halfpenny pier at Harwich is fishing for whiting and codling, lug and squid for best results. John Easie has the local gossip here on 01255 425992. Peter Costin managed 3 whiting and a dab for 2lb 2½oz to claim the Alf Huit Cup for the Braintree SAC in their latest club match. They fished on a poor day at Orford along with many others where nothing apart from a 8lb cod was caught that day. Colchester angler Peter Sorris landed a 12 and 7lb cod from the Narrows on Orford on one its more active days with many others to 5lb being landed along with whiting and lots more dabs now showing. Get yourself across to the island on 01394 450169.
Breakaways boy Dave Brown tells me that you need to fish at night for the best results with cod, whiting pouting and even the odd soles still to 1lb 6oz. Tim Adams won the southern sea league with 7lb 12oz at Aldeburgh. The match was won overall by Viscount Tackle and Lowestoft, with 120 anglers fishing weighing in 315 fish, the most surprising fish a 1lb 9oz sole. The northern section was won with only 2lb 9oz at Yarmouth. Dave can be got hold of on 01473 741393. Jason Amies at Gorleston Angling reports of whiting from all marks and a few dabs, not forgetting the numbers of small bass as well. Top marks are Southwold Pier, Dunwich, Orford and Aldeburgh. A rumour of a 20lb cod from Dunwich has reached my ears, also a few other cod around 12lb mark, as normal only rumours though.
Walcott and Bacton for best results but at the moment not to many codling from up here.
Some bigger whiting have now turned up at Mundesley Trimmingham, Cley and Weybourne, the first two marks provide more fish on the flood with the latter two best on the ebb. Some flounders and more dabs also are the re to catch. A 5lb cod was landed from Weybourne and lots of small bass mainly undersize from almost all beaches. Best baits are lug and rag tipped with squid or mackerel. Further up to the top of our region whiting can be expected from almost all beaches through to the Humber Bridge. Some more chances of codling from the Yellow Cross at Immingham, best reported so far is a fish of 5lb 8oz A match up here involving 30 anglers produced a win for Jimmy Blake with a catch of 18 fish for 7lb 4oz, with 16 fish for 6lb 10oz for runner up Les Andrews. Chapel marks are still producing some smaller bass to 2lb 9oz., with one angler taking 4 fish to 2lb 8oz from Huttoft. The Humber is full of whiting with some of the boats venturing further out finding more in the way of codling. Lug and ragworm are catching most of the fish. A competition from Suggits to Fuller Street Bridge on Sunday was won By Nathan Milne, with a catch of 23 fish, mainly whiting.

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT
Funny old thing life, the other week we were talking about record temperatures and all of a sudden we are talking about codling starting to show on some of our beaches. However these fish are not the beginning of the main run they are just a few of the fish living close by all summer. Look out for the main whiting run soon though.
Some boats from Southend have found some reasonable numbers of bass, locations as normal kept quiet, a few roker, eels and dogfish also being caught.

The bass have returned to the river Crouch. Most however are small but with some better fish in amongst them, fish light and have some real fun, some anglers catching over 20 a session, both rag and lug are taking the fish.
An excellent catch of bass was landed aboard the West Mersea boat the Enterprise, around 60 fish, with the biggest just passing the 7lb mark, the successful bait were artificial lures fished near an inshore wreck. Both the Vicky Emma and the Kingfisher produced a 8lb 8oz bass last week. Dave Smith and Norman Thompson respectively landing the fish, Dave Smith also landed one of the best smoothound of the week with a fish of 25lb 8oz. If the water temperature drops quickly this autumn expect these fish to quickly swim beyond our shores. Whilst the roker move in to replace them, add the incoming codling to them and we should get a really good autumn of fishing this year. Trips out from here can be booked with John Rawle on 01621 776445.
Clacton beaches have lots of small fish such as whiting and pouting, the odd cod to 3lb 8oz, worm baits taking most of the fish as there are very few peeler crabs about. Lots of small bass about as well, fish squid and you stand the best chance of a bigger fish. I did here of a rumour of one angler landing two cod around the 5-6lb mark from up this region on squid. Brian Deans man John Easie has the latest news on 01255 425992. Walton pier gives the chance of some early codling with a few being caught already, mainly just sizeable fish. Otherwise it is some sole, bass, whiting and pouting. The crew at Metcalf’s will guide you in the right direction on 01255 675680. Ray Wiggs my Morris dancing friend took a trip to Holland Haven the other day, looking for early codling and hooked into what he suspected was a stingray or roker. However after several minutes of pumping it was one of those moments we have all faced, no fish only one of those embarrassing moments, he actually had landed a kite!!
Felixstowe marks have some bass to 4lb with the odd better fish to 7lb plus some flounders and eels. A 5lb cod was caught from the Fludges so Viscount Tackle man John tells me, want to know more then ring him on 01473 728179. Moving on up from here the fishing has improved with Thorpeness Point providing some more bass, Paul Harrison landing an 8lb bass on rag from Sizewell. Two large bass were landed from the river Alde, one of 12lb this week and one of 11lb last week on ragworm, also another 2lb 12oz sole to Bernard Miles. However as with earlier report of mine most fish still seem to be coming from that just before dusk time. Dave Ward at Saxmundham Angling has lots of information on 01728 603443.
North beach at Lowestoft for soles, whiting and schollies, a 6lb bass was caught from Corton on squid. Gorleston Angling man Jason Amies reports that there are some whiting on his home beach, the pier there has a few bass to catch. More information from Jason on 01493 662448.
Chapel St Leonard’s , Sutton and Mablethorpe are worth a fish, rumours of some bass to 4lb 8oz have shown up. Cleethorpes region where some pin whiting are now showing night and day, flounders and small bass. Much the same can be said for Immingham sea wall. Going north bound to the York’s coast for your information at Dimlington the big whiting and some codling have replenished the shores here, best on the smaller tides. Any news from this part of the world call Bob Tarvet on 01472 602002 at Cleethorpes Angling.

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT

The dedicated anglers tend to fish when the majority doesn’t, at this time of the year. Very early fishing at this time of the year often gives very good results, while it is still quiet. Mullet and bass are the main targets, with float fishing giving very good results. Creeks and small rivers along with marinas and rocky breakwaters that are used in many places to break up the continuous eroding tidal run, these all give back eddies, with still water where food is often trapped and drops to the bottom, where hungry fish are waiting, along with the educated angler.
Most marks are slowing down now from the summer fishing and awaiting the first influx of whiting, which will be very soon on the east coast marks such as Orford and Aldeburgh where there is some deeper water, night tides will soon produce these fish being mixed in while sole fishing.
Ron Clark won the Jetty Anglers match the other night at West Beach, Shoebury with 3lb 1oz, second place went to Stuart Tanner who has five eels for 2lb 6oz. The interesting point is that Jetty’s golden peg money now tops £400, so watch out for their next match. Most fishing has taken place at night where some eels and small bass have featured in catches. Thirteen year old Craig Morgan won the Southend Pier junior fish of the week, and then proceeded to do it again the next week, well done Craig. Canvey marks such as Thorney Bay and Southfalls are giving small rewards of bass and eels, with crab for bait, George at Canvey Angling is worth a call on 01268 691542. Just up the line rewards are just a little better with a few more soles and flounders to mix in. A couple of good sized bass have been reported to have been lost at the wall at Grays. Brainwoods man Mick Gridley is your port of call up this way on 01375 374080.
Anglers taking a walk along the river Crouch or Roach can expect a few bass mainly to ragworm baits although you will be attacked by crabs, so fish over low water and fish a rolling lead. Boats fishing out from the river Blackwater can expect some hounds to about 18lb, roker and bass from offshore marks. Closer to home plenty of bass will be in the river itself, although ebb tides are creating plenty of weed as well. A 9lb bass was landed from Jaywick on squid, mullet at Victoria Road and Brighton Road in Clacton on float tackle. A few bass on the pier here and a few soles at night from almost anywhere but not in numbers. All this info and more can be gained from John Easie at Brian Deans on 01255 425992. Walton beaches have some small bass and a few soles mainly on ragworm. Languard Point you can still use lures to tempt some bass, otherwise normal ,bottom tackle will get you small bass and soles. Head towards inwards in the rivers up here and there are more in the way of small bass which you can catch on very light tackle indeed. Always expect a bigger fish turn up, the best I heard of last week was a 6lb fish from Shotley on rag and squid. Tackle Up boys Rob and Ray will guide you on 01394 274600.
Orford Island continues with the quieter tends with a few small dogfish and smoothounds, however expect some whiting to start showing soon at night. Lowestoft south pier has some soles to fill your plates up on worm bait, one or two better bass can also be expected, general beach fishing for soles, bass and eels is fairly slow. Gorleston Pier for some bass, Hopton for dabs, bass and eels on ragworm and crab. Jason Amies at Gorleston Angling has more news on 01493 662448.
Trimmingham beach and Cromer pier are the top spots on the north Norfolk coastline for bass. Rag and crab are the best of the live baits, but take some squid and chunks of mackerel as well. River Humber fishing at Barton has a few flounders, bass and eels on lug, rag and crab baits. Cleethorpes sea front also has much the same, not to much to get excited about. To see if things have got more exciting, ring Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes Angling on 01472 602002.

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT
Fishing has taken somewhat of a less interest in many anglers eyes with the record breaking weather we have had recently. Beaches not only inaccessible due to tourists, but water so warm they are almost already cooked before they come out of the water. Most beach fishing has taken place early or very late, again though many tourists have stayed very late on the beaches due to high temperatures, making fishing very difficult. I know its not in my area but one of my friends took a visit to Dover to find some bass, caught none but landed fishing straight down the wall a 1lb 8oz codling!! However there have been cod caught in our region, more on that later though.
As mentioned a while ago, the more conservation minded anglers are having an effect on the fishing. Having said that I did hear the other day down in Devon that one netter had three and a half ton of bass. Whilst releasing that everyone has to earn a living surely these sort of catches must be regulated. Back to our local area, the catch and release policy of anglers and netters over the smoothounds, which in my mind fight far better than bass in shallow water is having a real effect the catches. Not only has the fishing of the Essex coasts on the boats been excellent again this year, but up of the Lincs coast, a comment I heard the other day is that now they have the peeler crab availability there are tremendous shoals of smoothounds there, providing some superb fishing. I would say that it is possible the fishing you will get all year.
Southend boats taking some numbers of fish with Rob Smith and Barry Tilson taking 24 smoothounds and 14 bass on their private boat. S Lee with a 2lb 8oz bass, and C Morgan with a 14oz mackerel won the fish of the week competition on Southend Pier for the juniors, they both receive a Penn rod and reel. Mullet and bass keeping end of the pier anglers active. The SAAS club held a club match on the 10th July, fishing was poor on the hottest day with Rollo Rollings taking the honors with a 10 ½ oz eel. All marks west of Southend can expect a few eels, flounders and small bass, nothing much else. River Crouch marks offshore where anglers can expect smoothounds and crabs on rag and crab baits.
Lady Lucy out from Wallasea has again been in the thick of the action. The best fish topped at just over 20lb, with up to 40 fish per day most over double figures. Alan Foster landed a 18lb 8oz smoothound on the Predator on a 2lb test curve carp rod on his first trip out. Not to be outdone skipper Dave Godwin’s wife went one step further, using a 40-gram spinning rod she landed a 14lb specimen.
John Rawle reports less smoothounds out from Bradwell, but more in the way of roker and bass. More in the way of 3-8lb smoothounds and some parties getting up 25 roker per day. Squid and crab will take most of the roker at the moment, these fish will over the next couple of weeks move further inshore. One of the trawlers landed two stingray with the biggest estimated at around 80-90lb, both fish were put back alive, so you never know that next fish just could be!! Dave Weaving has at last ventured out to his favourite wreck marks, with some good results. Paul Breed took the best cod of 18lb, Keith Delworth took a ling of 13lb and Bob Kyper took a lovely black bream of 4lb 5oz.. The Dunmow club took 22 cod to 18lb and 18 bass to 4lb as well, adventurous trips to wrecks with Dave on 01206 735699.
Steady as you go at Clacton with lots of small bass with the odd bigger one to 7lb, worm and crab baits are taking the fish, towards the Holland end more mullet are being caught. Walton marks taking a mixed bag of fish including bass, eels, flounders and soles with ragworm the best bait. Orford Island for some bass to 4lb in the river Alde and of the island itself often on lures. A 2lb 8oz bass was caught by Aidan Byfield aged 9 (sponsored by Viscount Fishing Tackle) at Suffolk Beach Anglers' Association B-B-Q match last Saturday at East Lane, he beat the adults with that fish. Benfleet’s Ian Reynolds won the Sizewell NFSA match with three eels using rag and crab, which really shows how it is fishing up there
Some big soles turning up in the river on the Suffolk coast with better size bas as well, away from the crowds. The whiting bank where Mick Cobb tried his luck managed 5 cod to 5lb plus a roker and a bass. Not bad in 35c in the middle of August. Some small smoothounds from the Dirty Wall at Aldeburgh. Lowestoft beaches have some bass to 3lb from the Birds Eye to Ness Point, the pier for bass to 6lb and a few eels and soles. Gorleston Harbour where a few more bass are showing, on ragworm or take that spinning rod with you using lures or spinners.
Head for the marks of Weybourne and Salthouse for some fun evening fishing for mackerel, you will need an evening high water and use feathers or Sabiki feathers. Cromer Pier is still producing the bass, best one last week was a 8lb specimen, mackerel can turn up at any time, so keep feathers in your bag and for the serious angler some reasonable mullet also featuring. Go and get some plugs from your local tackle shop and towards Cley and West Runton, expect some bass for your efforts. By far the best fishing in our entire region is the Lincs coast, most marks from Chapel St Leonard’s to Mablethorpe and more. The smoothounds are quoting one of my contacts waving a white flag. Two anglers had 23 smoothies between 5 and 15lb 8oz. That must be some of the best fishing in the whole of the UK. Best bait is crab, fish will be caught on other baits, but action will be slow. Towards the Humber River itself fishing is fairly slow with just a few flounders, soles and eels. A match fished by 67 anglers at Immingham was won with 7 eels for 210cm. From the boats still the odd tope to 35lb, mackerel and even the odd codling, but near the river fishing is still slow, head out for the tope.

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT

The weed problems have not abated in the southern region, with your lead only needing to be down two minutes before the weed takes you into mid water. However it is not on every tide and not every mark. Young seven year old Chris Austin landed a quality garfish of 2lb from Southend Pier on mackerel strip, I am sure that will make Chris even keener than he already is. Mick Capp with 1.31kg winning weight won the Leigh & Westcliff open match, Alexander Angling Centre boss Terry Knott came second with 1.29kg. The junior winner was Ian McCain with 0.68kg, 58 plus 15 juniors fished. Miss the weed and jellyfish and the fishing stays reasonable with garfish, mackerel, flounders, small bass and the odd eel.
Some flounders and small bass from all marks on Canvey, 01268 691542 will get you George at Canvey Angling, have a yarn and see what you can learn. Bit of a mixed bag at Stanford with flounders, eels and small bass on all baits. A better chance of some soles at Grays with the odd fish to 2lb, a 6lb bass was also reported from here. Worm baits will normally give the best results from marks towards the Dartford Bridge, although crab at distance will pull in a good eel or two. Mick Gridley will tell you where on 01375 374080.
River Crouch angler Sam Cox tells me that shore anglers here can expect steady fishing after bass and with some more settled weather on the way take a chance for a mullet or two. However Sam fished board his friends small private boat and topped with a 5lb 8oz bass. Boats anglers venturing out will find roker, bass and smoothounds on crab and squid baits. Gary Kempen’s the Prelude managed some of the said fish on crab baits. Bradwell boats are finding numbers of roker and hounds and news of a 77lb tope, more details on that next week. Terry Batt reports bass to 7lb, roker to 18lb, small tope and even a gurnard to 3lb. Contact Terry on 01621 786170.
Clacton’s best known mark Brighton Road has been producing some bass to 5lb, with crab and rag giving the best results. Bass are falling to lures and gills on Clacton Pier, also the rocks around the Martello Tower are fishing for bass. Local man John Easie has the local hot spots at Brain Deans on 01255 425992. Red gills are also taking the bass on Walton pier and a mix of lures and gills from the beach. A report of a small turbot also taken, more news on that and more from Metcalfs on 01255 675680.
Felixstowe marks have some bass, some soles from the harbour area, boat anglers taking bass, roker, hounds and doggies. Best baits will be rag and crab fished, distance will depend on where you can locate the fish, another place where 20 yard casts will often pay off. Orford Island has doggies, bass, the odd smoothound and some eels from both front and the back of the island. The wrecks on offshore marks still producing some cod to 15lb. The dirty wall has plenty of doggies to catch, a few hounds, the odd sole, Sizewell has sole for the angler as well. Dave Ward at Saxmundham Angling has all the news on 01728 603443.
Mr. S Cook landed a 4lb 7oz bass from Ness Point, Clearmont for schollies, sole and dabs, north beach at Lowestoft along to Pakefield has a few soles along that stretch, all this and more from Gill Page at Sam Hooks on 01502 565821. Jason Amies from Gorleston Angling is selling rag, crab, squid and lug to catch bass, eels and flounders. His anglers are going to Hopton, Gorleston and Aldeburgh.
Martin Steward from Marine Sports says that Cromer Pier is the place to fish with bass to 8lb, Weybourne and Salthouse for dabs and flounders and try Walcott for the chance of some smoothounds. 01263 513676 gets you all the local gossip. Great news for boat anglers in the north of Norfolk, Roy Tipple who runs the boat with an aptly named boat called Hueee. They had 11 tope between 20 to 62lb over two trips. The successful bait was fresh mackerel on the flood in deep water.
Private boats out from Skegness have reported the first of the small tope with the odd one up to 30lb, also bass, skate and some hounds. Mablethorpe and Sandilands will produce some flounders and bass. Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes Angling will point you as my highly recommended tells you towards Killingholme, East Halton and Immingham where flounders, soles and eels will keep you active. Head for Humberstone Creek for flounders and eels. To the north of the Humber the Holderness coast is producing flounders, schollies and even some thornbacks at some marks. Spurn also holds flounders and schollies.

THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT
At the time of writing we are just finishing our best spell of weather this year so far. One thing that we have had here in the Thames is a glut of jellyfish over the last couple of weeks. Now we have been swamped with the good old summer pain green weed, making fishing very difficult at times.
Bass to 5lb, dogfish, hounds, roker and mackerel are the main fish being caught from boats venturing from the Thames, as mentioned above weed is becoming a problem. The weed will hamper any fishing over the Maplin sands, in fact one angler gave it around two minutes before you are weeded up. Southend pier results have also been hampered by the weed and jelly fish, but a bags of bass, mackerel, garfish, flounders and scad can be expected. Some flounders of the beaches at Southend also with some small bass. Crab and worm baits as normal will work best. The Thorpe Bay club match produced a win for Stuart Christie with two flounders for 75cm at Shoebury East Beach.
Terry Knott of Shoebury won the Jetty Anglers Hole haven match on Canvey the other day. Terry won with 5lb 15oz with six flounders and two eels. He beat Bob Grady into second place, Bob had 3lb 9oz made up with four flounders and two eels. Stanford marks producing flounders, eels and small bass on rag, maddies and crab, more info ring Barry on 01375 676739 at Stanford Tackle. Moving towards London at Grays where flounders, eels and bass will be caught on mainly worm baits.
Shore marks on the River Crouch, where bass are becoming more commonplace with fish up to 4lb 8oz. Again though weed is increasing in problem factor in the river. Boat anglers finding fishing difficult in the river but still finding tope to 5lb, bass to 6lb, dogfish, eels and small smoothounds. A 25lb smoothound was landed from a private boat called Lorna, this fish was caught on a bass plugging rod, so must have been extremely good fun. Offshore marks for smoothounds, bass, dogfish and lots of mackerel showing. Another contact told me of several shoals of mackerel and bass around to improve sport even more. Trips out from here can be booked up with Steve on the Sea Breeze on 07831 363629.
Bradwell boats are landing good numbers of smoothounds, bass, roker, large numbers of mackerel and even a gurnard and two turbot to 4lb. Another note of interest is a lot of very small tope and smoothounds are also being caught, some of which appear not have been swimming that long.
Brighton Road at Clacton and Jaywick for some bass and small eels, try for a monster, stingray that is at St Oysth, especially in the hot weather. Walton pier and the Naze have bass on rag and crab baits. Boats fishing out form here will find roker, smoothounds, dogfish and bass, take with you rag, crab and squid. Richard Holgate at Metcalf’s is your man on 01255 675680. The river Orwell where not only flounders and eels will keep you active but bass are also making their presence felt, most fish to 3lb, rag is very popular here. Woolverstone Marina also has bass to 2lb nearby. The Fludges and the Dip at Felixstowe have had the odd bass to 9lb being caught on lures, Languard for the odd few soles, eels and big pouting. Gerry Bell at Castaways has more news on 01394 278316.
Orford Island for some dogfish and hounds in the river, with some bass to 8lb. Wrecks offshore from here have some tremendous cod fishing at the moment with most fish up to 5lb on gills. North of Sizewell power station for some soles, the dirty wall at Aldeburgh also for soles and bass. Dave Ward from Saxmundham Angling is your contact for up here on 01728 603443. Bass a plenty at Covehithe, with fish up to 6lb, the south beach at Lowestoft for small bass, the north beach for soles, mixed species on the pier and Pakefield for dabs and bass to 3lb 8oz. Gill Page at Sam Hooks has lots more info like this, ring her on 01502 565821. Bass and flounders predominate at Hopton and Gorleston.
Martin Steward recommended Trimmingham and Doverstrand beaches for some bass, but for a really good chance of a double figure bass try Cromer Pier with crab and lug giving you the best chance. Give Martin A ring at Marine Sorts on 01263 513676.
Mablethorpe has mainly flounders for your efforts. Rumours of some tope, smoothounds & skate are being caught from the boats around the north Lincs coast. As always Humberstone Creek has steady fishing with flounders and eels. Barton for flounders, eels and a few soles or go to Immingham for flounders and a few small codling. All the Humber news can be plied out of Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes Angling Centre on 01472 602002. North of the river at Hilton where dogfish and roker will be caught and the Holderness coast for a good chance of bass and hounds. Local match man Dave Dobbs also recommends many of the Humber River marks for flounders and eels. Ringborough was fishing well but several lads fished there the other day and only managed one bass between them, however it was only a few metres out. Also rumours of boats taking large catches of bass from just offshore from there.

Subject: Reports from the Thames to the Humber

THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT
The summer bass hotspots are beginning to show their form now as we move into June, with the bass starting to hunt in their favourite marks. A spell of settled weather has come upon us at last lets hope that it lasts and we get some summer weather after our miserable May.
Southend boats are finding some roker, doggies, bass and flounders to their efforts, best baits will be squid, crab and ragworm. Still worth a try for plaice of the flats of Thorpe Bay and numbers of mackerel from almost anywhere you hit the shoals. Southend pier along the stem for mackerel, garfish, shad flounders and at the end for bass, eels and with the settled weather a few mullet show soon. Nothing changed for Canvey anglers with flounders, small bass and some eels. Tilbury, Stanford and Grays read much the same but with the added bonus of a few soles from Grays. Mick Gridley is your upper Thames contact at Brainwoods on 01375 374080.
Shore marks in the river Crouch are producing some small bass to 2lb 8oz. Fish close to the rocks with either rag or crab baits and light as conditions will allow.

The Vicky Emma landed one of the first reported tope of the year with a fish of 40lb on the ebb tide. Terry’s boat has also had some good numbers of roker to 18lb. Bass and hounds make up the numbers, again best baits will be squid, crab and rag. The Vicky Emma can be booked up on 01621 786170. Shore marks on the Blackwater should also see the first of the stingers soon.
Holland on sea so John Easie tells me has bass, eels and the odd roker, St Oysth for some eels and it wont be long before the chance of a sting ray or two. Baits to take with you are crab and ragworm. Brains Deans boss John Easie has more news on 01255 425992. The Naze at Walton has some bass feeding there now as well as the pier where garfish will also feature in your catches. Anglers aboard the boats of here are targeting hounds, bass and roker where squid, crab and rag are the baits to take with you. Richard Holgate and his crew can advise on 01255 675680 at Metcalf’s. Viscount Tackle man John reports a 5lb cod landed from the Orwell and tells me of some hounds from Orford Island. Give him a call on 01473 728179. The Manor, Languard Point and the Dip are fishing for soles and bass on crab and worm baits.
Anglers venturing out on boats from the Orford region have been landing cod to 10lb from offshore wrecks and some bass. River marks have some eels and increasing numbers of bass on ragworm. The Sea side of Orford Island will give you hounds to 6lb, dogfish and dabs. Trips to the Island on 01394 450169 arranged with Peter Merring. Breakaways star angler Dave Brown recommends Sizewell and Bawdsey for eels, soles, doggies and bass to keep you active on an evening. Dave can be reached on 01473 741393.
Minsmere, Thorpeness and Sizewell have a few bass swimming by to around the 4lb mark on ragworm, still the odd codling being landed to 5lb. Remember that Thorpeness often produces some very good sized bass and often close to the shore. Dave Ward at Saxmundham Angling Centre has all the news on 01728 603443.
Cove Hythe and Kessingland where schoolies will keep your rod tip active, the south pier at Lowestoft for soles and the north pier for a few left over codling. The river at Gorleston still has a few codling in it to 5lb mainly on crab baits. The beaches at Gorleston and Hopton have dabs and flounders to aim for, Jason Amies will keep you up to date with the news on 01493 662448.
Cromer pier, where some bass to 8lb have been reported along with some good bass at Trimmingham, Runton and The Old High at Sherringham. Crab seems to be the best bait at the moment. Cleethorpes Angling boss Bob Tarvet governs the top of our region, where his local prom will produce some eels and flounders with crab and worm baits. Humberstone Creek has much the same results on all stages of the tide. Some small bass, pouting, flounders, codling & small whiting to boat anglers of around Cleethorpes. Ringborough on the north side of the Humber, continues to fish well for the rays with squid showing as the best bait. Further up the Yorkshire coast fishing is good with rays, spurdogs, cod, doggies and bass from the coast and the boat.

THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT
One point of interest already this year has been the number of mackerel been caught from the pier at Southend and boats fishing around the Thames to Blackwater. It is very early for these sorts of numbers, which means it’s just an early run or this summer will be a vintage year.
Southend Pier had some very good early catches of mackerel with up to 20 being reported per session on mackerel strip and three hooks up the line. Garfish, flounders, shad and bass also being caught from various marks on the pier. Colin Bond aboard the Skerry Belle also reports many mackerel about along with the normal good catches of roker and more hounds, doggies and bass moving around, call Colin on 01702 390842 to book a trip or two.
Southfalls and Thorney Bay are reported to be fishing steadily for flounders and small bass, look out soon for a few eels. Stanford for flounders, eels and small bass on rag, lug, maddies and crab baits. Always the chance of a bigger bass on crab. Stanford Angling man Barry will give you his latest news on 01375 676739. Grays Wharf will give you flounders, eels and some soles on worm baits. The other side of the river at Gravesend has reported some very good sized eels on rag and crab. So be prepared for that rod being pulled over with a big slimey.

Anglers fishing the river Crouch, afloat and on terra firma are finding catches of small bass in reasonable numbers.
The Blackwater boats taking some roker to 15lb with some bass mixed in as well. Dave Weaving also reports roker, the odd bass, schoolies and mackerel. Call Dave for these and wrecking fish on 01206 735699.
The Martello Tower and Holland on sea using rag, lug and crab baits for a few codling, bass and eels. Victoria and Brighton Road where the chance of a bigger bass will keep anglers going there. Remember these fish can be very close to the shore. More news from Brian Deans man John Easie on 01255 425992. Walton pier is providing bass for anglers with a few for beach anglers as well. Dogfish feature more on the ebb with rag and crab. Eels and pouting are also being caught with bass, roker and hounds for anglers fishing from boats, Richard Holgate and his boys from Metcalf’s on 01255 675680 has all the news and more.
Roker, bass and dogfish are the main targets for the boats from offshore at Felixstowe, lug, squid and crab will get you the best chance. Tackle Up boys recommend The Dip for whiting, dabs and sole, best time I am told is the low water state of the tide with rag being the best bait. Give them a call on 01394 274600. Orford Island is fishing best on the overcast days with lug and crab, the fish will include doggies, hounds and a few codling.
Gill at Sam Hooks has plenty of news for us this week. Pakefield seems to be on top of her list, here you will catch dabs, doggies, the odd skate, whiting, codling and bass. Similar types catches from North Beach at Lowestoft plus some sole to around the 2lb range. Phone Gill on 01502 565821 at Sam Hooks. A few codling, flounders and dabs from Gorleston beach and pier mainly on lug and crab.
Head for Trimmingham to Doverstrand beaches for a mixture of flounders, bass and dabs, Cromer Pier is starting to show some of those bigger bass mentioned the other week with one or two fish reported to around the 8lb mark. Crab is the leading bait and flood tide the best. Humberstone Creek for the trusted flounders with worm and crab for bait. Cleethorpes Prom for flounders and schoolies, Immingham has flounders and the odd codling to around the 3lb mark. More news from the main man at Cleethorpes Angling Bob Tarvet on 01472 602002.

Subject: THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT

01/05/05
One of the main interesting points to come out of this last season is the reliance on lugworm for codling fishing. Not only has squid became a top bait for anglers but ragworm has surprised many people for catching some extremely good hauls of codling over the last few months. Look out next season to see if the larger codling have the taste for those juicy red creatures. As each week goes by the codling catches on average get smaller and more reports of summer fish start to be heard down the grapevine. Now the wind has swung round to the southwest, things should start to change for both sea and freshwater anglers.
The main spring run of roker has moved into the Thames with plenty to share for everyone. Some fish up to 13lb, a few codling left with more dogfish and the odd bass. Southend pier has more garfish falling to float tackle and mackerel strip. More flounders also being reported. Terry Knott at Alexander Angling has more news on 01702 436006. Canvey marks are just producing some flounders and small bass. Smelt, flounders and small bass are to be caught at Stanford, Tilbury just the odd few flounders and small bass. Several soles have been reported from the Grays Wharf area, not every tide but showing that summer is on the way. Flounders also showing and eels should be close by, worm baits are the top baits here. Local man Mick Gridley will point you in the right direction on 01375 374080.
Some more small bass moving into the Crouch with Jason Nie taking three to around the 2lb mark on the north side of the river. Well Burnham now has a new charter boat, The Prelude run by Gary Kempen, took to the water and landed 12 roker, 8 hounds plus several other bits. Fancy a trip then phone Gary on 01621 786124. A couple of reports of small smoothounds have ventured into the Crouch, offshore boats are being rewarded with codling, roker, bass, smoothounds plus smaller fish. Next river up the Blackwater for some roker to 13lb, a few more bass showing up to around the 6lb mark, dogfish also showing in numbers.
Holland on sea has a few codling and reports of the odd smoothound to keep up the excitement, Holland Haven carries on with a few codling, but don’t be surprised to get some bass soon. Codling also feature at Brighton Road, lots of tips from Brian Deans on 01255 425992. Walton pier still is managing to produce some codling as are some beaches but spring fish are begging to wake up now with dogfish, eels and bass.
Felixstowe boats are finding some codling, whiting, dabs and roker. The Dip seems the best mark from the beaches around here with a few codling, whiting and the odd bass. Gerry at Castaways has all the news on 01394 278316. Shingle Street and East Lane will produce codling with lug and crab baits.
A nice 4lb 8oz was landed from the south pier at Lowestoft, a few codling from the north beach. Take a trip to Pakefield for a mixed winter bag of fish including whiting, dabs and codling, contact Gill at Sam Hooks on 01502 565821 for all the latest gossip. Jason Amies is more upbeat this week, Pakefield has some codling, bass and flounders to catch, Gorleston River for codling to 5lb mainly on the ebb, bass should not be a surprise very soon. Contact Jason at his shop Gorleston Tackle on 01493 662448.
Martin Steward has news of some bass and dogfish from his home stretch at Cromer Pier and also recommends a trip to Trimmingham and Weybourne for the last of the codling and the early bass to 5lb. From now on though there is always a chance of a big bass being landed. 01263 513676 will get you directly to Martin. Avoid holiday time but try Skegness for a chance of flounder and dogfish. Cleethorpes front for bass, whiting and flounders at all states of the tide, the Yellow Cross has some codling left to catch. Humberstone Creek for flounders and some small bass on worm baits. Top tips can be prised out of Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes on 01472 602002.

THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT FOR 28/04/03
I note with interest Colin Davidson’s article in this magazine on the effects the full moon has on fishing, especially for carp. However does it work the same for sea fishing?
One might think with all this lovely weather we have been having that the summer species will come springing in. However it might have been really arm inland but on the coastal strip the temperature has often not been over 13c. The seawater is still under 8c with these cold easterly winds making life difficult on our part of the coastline.
Southend boats finding a mix of codling and roker as well as small stuff. Southend beaches for flounders and small bass and the pier have flounders to catch from the stem. Rumours of the odd garfish being caught but none confirmed. Chafford Hundred angler Jamies Rethven, managed some flounders and small bass from around the station area on ragworm. Another note is that the shelters on the stem have been taken down. They will be rebuilt over the next couple of months, but be warned that there are no shelters along the stem at the moment. More local pier news from Terry Knot at Alexander Angling on 01702 436066. Canvey Island marks for just a few small flounders and bass. Stanford for flounders and smelt on lug, rag and maddies, give Barry at Stanford Tackle a wake up call on 01375 676739 if you have more news. Plenty of sole in the river down the Grays end of the river, a few rumours of a few turning up on the shore here. Not long to wait now. Another piece of local gossip is that no matter how much you think a place is good, you have to fish it first before telling everyone to fish there. This happened to good old sea dog Rollo Rollings, he told everyone that there was lots of fish at Tilbury, however when he finally persuaded someone to take him there, there was only a few flounders to be caught, lesson learnt.

Southend Angling Centre worker Geoff Smith fished aboard Dave Godwin’s Predator out from Wallasea. Geoff convinced of a good size fish, brought it to Dave’s attention. On surfacing, all was revealed, a house brick with a large fisherman’s ****hole on it. Needless to say he won’t live this one down. Apart form this, the last weekend boats were stuck in the river due to the east winds, but an influx of small bass plus some whiting saved the day and kept anglers active. Next river up where some roker up to 15lb have been landed on the boats until the east winds took effect, but the main call has been less codling, and more dogfish. Best roker from Dave Weavings Jenna D was a 15lb roker, trips out with Dave on 01206 735699.
Holland Haven continues to produce some codling, as does Brighton Road in Clacton. Try Clacton pier and dogfish, pouting, dabs and whiting will be your reward. John Easie main man at Brian Deans will let you the latest news on 01255 425992. Walton pier has a real mix bag of fish with pouting, doggies, whiting, codling and eels, some codling on the beaches and a few sole showing at Frinton. Boats finding more in the way of roker.
Felixstowe’s The Dip produced an excellent session of fishing for Steve Atkins with rag and squid proving the successful bait for 14 codling. To add to that more codling, bass, pouting, whiting and flounders are all being caught for a real mix bag of fishing from all marks. Gerry at Castaways will tell you all the local gossip on 01394 278316. Dave Brown at Breakaways also backs this report up and adds big pouting and some dogfish to the mixture of fish. The harbour for more in the chance of dabs and soles, the river Orwell has more flounders in it. For a good yarn phone Dave on 01473 741393.
Orford Island for doggies, codling and dabs from the seaside and codling and whiting from the river marks. Aldeburgh has been a lot slower over the last week, with just a few fish caught. Lee Shaw took a trip to Shingle Street for three codling to 3lb, but had to leave just as the fish were starting to feed on the ebb.
Kessingland for some whiting, the Links Road for flounders and again reports of some small smoothounds. Some codling to 4lb from the north beach at Lowestoft, Sam Hooks is your contact here on 01502 565821. Southwold and Gorleston beaches have rumours of some bass being caught. Top of the Norfolk coast we have some codling from Mundesley and Trimmingham. Weybourne for the flatter things in life, such as soles and flounders. Cromer pier for some dogfish and codling, some bass will also feature here very soon. Last but not least on upwards to the top of our region we have Cleethorpes Prom for eels, flounders, bass, whiting and smelt to keep you guessing which fish will be landed next, Immingham has some codling for your travels. Bob Tarvet has more news on 01472 602002 at Cleethorpes Angling.

THAMES TO THE HUMBER FISHING REPORT
Further to my mention last week that some good codling catches were being made from the Medway last week. This has continued from the boats, however some roker were also caught from the shore off Sheerness. Some eels, whiting and dabs are also to be caught, inshore of Thorpe Bay a few plaice showing. The same fish have made a small appearance from Southend Pier but as yet no garfish reported, not surprising considering the last few weeks weather. Although when you read this it will have been extremely warm for April. The Stanford Open was won by hunky fireman, Martin Lee with ten flounders for 329cm in a catch and release match, Dion Macfayden came second with the same number of fish but with 302cm. Stanford Le Hope angler Steve Dickens came second in the Kent flounder league with our Canvey duo Jason Speller and Dion Macfayden coming eight and nine over the four matches. Just to keep you Kent boys on your feet.

Small tides and easterly winds has slowed the action down in the river Crouch with just a few codling and roker. Top catch of the week was a 5lb bass, there are however several small bass and whiting around as well. Another interesting point is the sighting of several porpoises up as far as the Burnham moorings. Trips out from the river Crouch can be arranged through Dave Godwin on 01702 308043, also porpoise sight seeing trips. Bradwell boats for codling mainly to 6lb, roker to 12lb 4oz, this fish landed on Terry Batts boat the Vicky Emma. Also from offshore two very early smoothound of 3lb 8oz and 5lb were landed. A little whisper of some good size bass being landed.

Last weeks highly recommended proved its point again with several codling to 4lb 8oz on rag and crab baits. Roker and codling out from the boats, Brian Deans John Easie is your contact here on 01255 425992. Brighton Road for codling and whiting tops the Clacton beach marks. Walton pier continues the theme with codling and also dogfish, whiting, pouting and bass using lug and squid for bait.

Breakaway man Dave Brown tells me that the river Orwell is still worth a try for some flounders, give Dave a ring on 01473 741393 for more news. Tackle Up boys Ray and Rob in Felixstowe tell me that the Manor End is producing some codling to 2lb 8oz on lug. Roker and codling are keeping the boat anglers happy out from here. Where as Languard have a mixed collection of bass, codling, whiting, flounder and pouting. 01394 274600 gets you to Tackle Up for the latest info.

John Irwin from the Bedford Sea Anglers ventured out again from Felixstowe at the weekend. He fished from the river Deben on Saturday and Sunday with his friend, John Childs, on his boat 'Ganesha'. On Saturday, in relatively light easterlies and glorious sunshine, they fished about a mile off Cobbolds Point where he had 8 nice plump codling to 4 lb with John catching 3 himself. On Sunday the wind was a bit stronger so we fished much closer in, no more than 300 yards from shore for some of the time. Despite the unfavourable conditions they still managed 7 codling to 3lb plus.

Just to prove that codling are not as plentiful as before, super star James Swinford-Howe failed to catch a codling on his recent trip at Aldeburgh, one does note that this was a rare occurrence. However there are some codling and dabs there for mere mortals, Orford for some codling and quite a lot of dogfish turned up. Southwold is producing some dogfish as well as codling. Saxmundham Angling has all the news in this area on 01728 603443, Dave’s the man to ask for.

The south pier at Lowestoft produced a 6lb bass on ragworm, flounders and dabs. The Sparrow nests end of the north beach has some codling to 4lb on lugworm. Take a trip to Pakefield in front of the Jolly Sailor for some tasty plump dabs, codling feature here as well. Gill has more info on 01502 565821 at Sam Hooks. Lowestoft beaches, so Jason Amies from Gorleston Tackle tells me that some codling to 8lb have been reported and as in my highly recommended Gorelston river for codling to 5lb. A few hounds have also been mentioned from the beaches, not to much info on that at the moment though.

Trimmingham and Overstrand for codling to 3lb 8oz, to keep you in the mood. Talking about moods, summers ones that is a 5lb was landed from that bass hot spot Cromer Pier, this early fish was caught on lug.

The yellow cross on the Humber wall is worth a try for codling to 3lb, careful of the tackle loss though, lug and rag proving the best baits. Cleethorpes Prom is fishing for flounders, codling and small bass on rag. Humberstone Creek for flounders and some small bass also moving in again on rag. All this and more from Cleethorpes Angling on 01472 602002. Under the shelter of the York’s coast with yet another north easterly, the Humber Cruising Ass fished a boat match to prove there are still enough codling left in the Humber, with John Frost winning with 32lb and Tim Burgess runner up with just over 25lb. In fact they weighed in 245lb of fish between 17 members, all fish were caught fairly close to the north shore.
