Hi All,

Jeen we need to get together again soon, been to long now. To "The Skinny Late"Are we still going to have that beer sometime or not!!

I have not made any post now for a loooooong time and sorry about that. We are at the beginning of a new fishing season and I would like to wish you all a great one!!!

Let us all try and protect, and conserve something this season. We have an obligation to our children to protect nature so that they to will be able to enjoy it someday!

Always leave a fishing spot cleaner than you found it. It is sad to see the state of some of the beaches around here and to think that it was "fisherman" that left them the way they are ! Hooks line and used bait all over the place.Does this still surprise anyone if the goverment then get Sticky issuing license's?

Let us all stand together to protect the SPORT we enjoy so much.

After all it is about the hunt and not the kill .....

Support catch and release !

Hey Guys,
Been a while, but now have settled in Ras Al Khaimah managing a diving centre here.
Aswell as diving we are operating deep sea fishing trips, at the moment we are using a small 27 foot localy made julphar craft, but next week we are getting a gulf craft super deluxe 33 foot with toilet, freshwater shower with 2 x 250hp outboards, the boat has 4 rod holders at the back and have had outriggers installed, I'll keep you up to date when the boat is finaly in RAK.
Went for a cruise and a spot of fishing in the Musandam yesterday, couple barracuda and sultan ibrahim, but nothing compared to my big boy, see pic.

Hi All,
It's been a while before we saw any reports??? I guess it's summer time and it's too hot to fish and most fish are offshore.
I have a couple of questions and if anybody can help me, that would be great.
1- for people with boats...what is the Avrg. Depth of water? doesit exceeds 300ft.
2- How far (KM) and deep offshore can we go ?
3- Anybody uses circle hooks? and how is the availabilty in the market and prices ?
Thanks a punch.
the reason i am asking because i'll be relocating within a month or so and i need to prepare.
hope to share some fishing with you guys soon
take care

HI Abdallah,

All the best man. I have always appreciated your frank and innocent questions and your joy to fish.
Well you are going to some great fishing believe me!. The fish you catch there would be mostly fresh water like Salmon and trout. These are the best sport fish. Techniques same as salt water spin fishing. You can use spinners and rapalas. You walk into any sports shop and get hold of required eqipment. Log on to Angling or fishing sites for the area try Yahoo or Google for " fishing in Ottawa". You will get all the information you need.
Iam sure you will develop into a great sports fisherman and really enjoy the great outdoors of Canada. But you must promise that you will visit this site and post us on your angling adventures there.
Regards & all the best

Abdulla,
All the best mate and thanks for your input to the forum. I'm sure the fish around here will miss you.

The only tip about fresh water fishing at Canada I can give is : Check with the locals there. Fishing differs from place to place.

Take Care

Abdullah,

I don't understand why you are interested in using a net, no matter how big it is. Firstly it is illegal to net so close to the shore and secondly the pleasure of cathing fish is in the fact that you have to use skill to catch them. Netting is bad for the environment and involves no skill at all. Plus you will probably catch and kill plenty of undersize fish in the process.

Forget the nets.

I have fished Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quawain for years now. I suggest that all those wanting to fish these areas get together and fish together. I'm busy for the next few weeks but after that I am happy to meet up for a nights fishing.

The part between Dubal and Dugas, a small part is the part you are talking about? Find it hard to fish on such a stretch. Where else can we fish for proper space to fish, the space thereon is Jebel Ali Palm, shallow, long stretch, and probably no fish, so where are the fishes?

Anyone knows of any spot thereon?

One night in the shoreOne night in the shore

The moon is on it's full, the tide is beginning to rise, the weather is good, the water is calm when we arrive that night. Peter, Jolits and Me started to set-up our camp at 9:pm. When we are about to set our first cast in our favorite spot-the jetty, some guys approached us, they are chinese nationals and we were informed about their 2 nets stretched along that place. We have no other choice than to move out from there. We casted our lines far from the nets perimeter unluckily, there was no single strikes for hours. We decided then to take a nap.

On the early morn'n we tried to cast on the same spot when my first strike came and landed a 2 "silvery porgy" at the same time as shown in the photo, and every minute from then strikes were coming.

It seems like there is no need from the Sharjah Muncipality to get fishing license from them. maybe should check sharjah muncipality website for details.

Hey Guys,
Know what.. the Dubai municipality guys rejected my fishing license application. The reason ... cos my telephone bill and tenancy contract have sharjah address. I called up them up and the guy says thats the rule. I asked him that it means, in effect, nobody living in Sharjah can fish in Dubai. He says thats the rule. I said I lived in Nahda and Mamzar is bang opposite my home, he says no can do.
Anyone have any ideas.

When it comes to bait, there's nothing better than a natural bait. I use shrimps or sardines cut into strips.

Helo Guys,

In between Dubal and Dugas, we always fish there with my friends during Fridays and we always catch fish of different varieties but now summer begins and fish there is expected to be less because of the hot water at daytime. Maybe we will try also at night time somedays.

The place is good and quiet. There are 3 break waters to fish from. You can go behid Dubal but not to Dugas because it is prohibited due to live gas issue.

There are lot of these kind, we call it as "latab" in our language (Philippines), I don't know the local or common name.

I finally got by drivers licence back and was slapped with a AED110 fine for getting caught fishing under the Maktom Bridge. Better than 2 months in jail. Glad I decided to leave my coloured overalls at home and wear a suit and tie instead. Guess equal treatment for equal actions is a principle not yet widely applied in Dubai.

Now its time to apply for a fishing licence. With all the luck I've been having around Dubai, have been wondering whether its worth the bother. Any recent inspirational stories from the group (real or fake) would be helpful to build up my enthusiasm.

Hi,

Got my licence yesterday. My application number was RFL 000001 2006 and I got it after a month. Went yesterday and they gave it to me. Valid for a year. My wife's licence is still pending. They wanted the marriage certificate and don't really know what that has to do with fishing. My name is on her passport and her's is on mine.

When I was there yesterday, they were threatening a poor guy (looks like a labourer) with two months in jail.

These guys must be crazy. Two months in jail for a tiny hungry fish???

have u been reading wat Emirates today is publishing ... its talkin bout Dubai beaches and wats happening to the marine life here....
I though of y dont we send them something .. a letter commenting on the fishing sport in Dubai ... maybe we could post here somewhere .. and call them to come n read it !! ....

Jeen wat u'r saying is true ... n bout me ... in summer i'll be either fishing at night or under some bridge :D !!! I missed the cold nights we used to spend fishing in Jumeira :D !!!

For people who come to fish in dubai, I dont advise u to do that ..... the weather will be f*****g hot !! n dont forget there will be no big fishes, so dont bother !!! :D ;-)
except if u'r planning to use a boat, thts somthing different !!

n-wayz .... gtg now .... n jeen it'll be nice to hear some tactics of fishing for specific species ..... ;-)

Guys,

Does anyone what's been happening to the fishing licence?? I did apply for mine online a month back and it is still in the "pending approval" status. For those who do not know the procedure for applying for a licence; here it is:

Log on to www.dm.gov.ae and register.

Then log on again and apply for a fishing licence. Be sure you have scanned the following and kept ready:

1. photograph (which will appear on the licence)
2. valid passport copy with visa page
3. licence copy
4. tenancy contract
5. dewa bill
6. car registration card
7. id / labour card

After you fill in the on line application form and up load all the above scanned documents (make sure the size of the files are small), you will get your application reference number.

After verification and approval, you will be asked to come over to the Municipality and collect your licence.

This is the new procedure. So all our old licences are not valid anymore. And do NOT fish without a licence.

Cheers

Other than the heat, is summer a terrible time for fishing here in Dubai? When I've gone out all the other luckless surfcasters I meet tell me the water is too cold and the fish are far off-shore. Logically then, the summer should be a great time for shorecasting. Is this in fact the case?

Hi Guys,
In the rivers of India there is a fish called the Masheer ( literally translated it means "BIG HEAD" ). The fish is probably one of the gratest fresh water game fish in terms of size to strength ratio. And talk about size, they have been caught up to 120 LBs!.
There is a river in the Mountians about 40 KMs from my home in south India which flowed through a stretch of lush topical forest . THe waters were fast and furious interspaced with deep still pools. Those were days where you couldnt find arificial lures like spinners or spoons in the market. whatever fishing equipmwent we had came from friends and relatieves living abroad.I got a Spinning reel and a seven foot rod loaded with 14 Lb line by Mail from the USA along with half a dozen small spinners suitable for Trout I persumed. I took one of These Spinners And sat down with a Black Smith/ Tinker to enlarge the spinner. THe end product was a 4 1/2 inch copper beauty with a buck tail contributed by one of our hens.
Armed with my equipment I landed up on the river Bank. It was about 7 AM and the sun light was filtering through the HUge Trees above . The monkeys were kicking up a racket. In front of me about 20 yards in front was a still deep pool and a shaft of sunlight penetrated the water like somebody was showing a torch beam into the pool. I tied my spinner and made one cast. THe spinner hit the water at the outer edge of the pool and excactly as the spinner entered the beam of light, every thing after that happened in slow motion. A Bronze Monster about 4 feet just materialised in that shaft of light and inhaled that spinner. I froze I couldnt strike or crank the reel or any thing. THe fish Remained suspended in that light also frozen . Then Every thing happened in a blur the fish just turned around with a flik of its tail , the line went cutting through the water and the line snapped without even a murmur from my drag.
I have been fishing that river every year since then, caught many a monster from there but still the memory is etched so clear in my mind and Every I time I cast into that River I expect that Bronze Monster to Materialize out of No where.

Tight Lines,

Hi Abdez,
Thanks for dropping the stone into the pool. You are right it shurely got kind of too silent for comfort.
I wonder ---. One of the main reason I suppose is the choppy waters we have been having for a while resulting in fewer people going out to fish. Also I feel as the season changes and summer approaches the interest level in the sport and the intial fever that grips every one by early October stars to wane. Then total silence would prevail till SEpt - Oct .
May be we sholuld Talk about our Fishing Experiences during these summer months. I will start with one of Mine tomorrow and see where it Goes.

...the answer is in your question...you were using a spoon. even at low boat speeds the spoon doesnt WOBBLE...IT SPINS. wire kinks...and when folded back against the kink or bend (be it in a single strand wire or multi-strand cable) it breaks. even if you have a swivel.

a good way to lessen the spinning effects is to use a good ball bearing swivel...doesnt matter if ur using a downrigger or not. im willing to bet that you have a lot of line twist on your lines...proof that im dead right on this one...remember that IT only lessens the effect...and not totally solving the problem.

there are specialized spoons for trolling, like the bigger sizes of the tony acetta pet spoon...kimberly spoons by halco and so forth...good luck and tight lines.

Hi Graham,
Quite interesting. A few questions were you using a downrigger? If yes the trace would have snagged on coral or other structure like sunken barge or vessel and the line release clip would have not released the line ( jammed ) ??. If no down rigger was the lure trolling on the surface or deep diving . what was your trolling speed ? What size lure and what weight of lure. When trolling for King fish at high speed if you do not use very heavy shock leaders like 120 Lb Mono filament or Very heavy trace . When the fish hits which it does at high speed the suddeness of the bite and resistance due the boat speed causes the terminal tackle to give way like a flimsy thread and the drag will not release any line . A simple experiment would be to put some ten pound line on your reel , set a REASONABLE DRAG AND pull steadly . tHE drag will release the line. Now with the same drag try giving a sudden jerky strong pull ( please wear gloves or tie the line end to a window or something). You will see that the line breaks without the drag releasing any line. These are only assumptions and what makes fishing so exciting is the fact that you cannot sea whats happening under water and we are free to let our imagination run away like a reel stripping king fish.

Hi Guys,Bought a boat recently and have been doing some bottom fishing off the coast of Azman.Had some success caching medium size Shery, but have had a strange problem while trauling the last two times out.On the recomendation of a local fishing shop i used red and white steel spoon type of lure on one of my lines. The drag was a little tight the first time so last friday i set two lines with the same type of lure with a lighter drag. The strange thing is both with the first lure and secondly with the two lures on steel 70lb traces (line 40lb)the lures got taken, the steel trace cut clean and not a murmer from my reels.Any idea's.

If you're leaving Abu Dhabi towards Dubai .....Just before Karama ..turn left and follow the dirt road or it used to be !!!!! once u see the channel follow it until u get to the first spot.... be prepared for monsters in there ..all kind ..Hamour ...Rays ...Baracudas and kings ..GT ...Sheari ... the second spot in kinda slow ...but once it hits ...WOW ...I battled a hamour for 4 hours on a manual line he was abouit 15Kg Huge monster ...i made a mistake of giving him some slack and he went into the rocks ....that's why it tookl so long ..
anyway ...i hope this is helpful ....
Hope to get back to UAE soon ...as i miss the fish downthere ...it was 5 years since i was last time there.
Good Luck

I go fishing inside creek park, under two bridges of dubai, Hamriya port breakwaters and the jetties of the 2 fish ports of Jumierah.I also went fishing twice at the Al Alkahn area in Sharjah and during long holidays..we will go to the northern emirates and Oman provinces

I’m very glad to find this forum and hoping that one day we will be seeing each other during fishing

Have nice day to all of us. May the fish be with you!!!

Newbius Maximus,

Yes, fishing in Dubai is not as it used to be a couple of years ago. The Palms and other projects have had a very negative effect in terms of marine life and it is very obvious to those of us who have fished here over the years. Once these projects are over, it is going to take years from then on to have some repair damaged, though it will not be like the earlier days. The rocks near the Burj do have hammour and nothing else. Maybe you can try surfcasting from the beach. You should be able to get some small or medium breams, sheri etc. The problem with the eastern coast is if the sea is choppy, your travelling so far is a complete waste of time and money as was last Saturday. The beaches at Ras Al Khaimah still hold good fish but during the very early hours.

I still don't understand the Environmental section picking up on small timers at the Maktoum Bridge while projects are screwing up the environment wholesale.

Cheers,

Heber

For those of us unlucky enough (in terms of both time and/or money) not to have access to boats, shore fishing around Dubai has been producing some very poor results. Last week I was reduced to catching (and releasing) bait fish among the rocks at the beach next to the marina before the Burj. How pathetic. My fellow luckless fishers tell me the water is too cold. Is this true or have the various off-shore mega projects around Dubai turned the waters into an underwater desert?

Went to Mike’s Manta Dive Centre on Friday and Saturday. We hired two boats on both days from 9 am to 4 pm. Friday: Fishing was good and we got sheris, hammours and trigger fish. Saturday: The sea was choppy and very little fish. Neverthless, we enjoyed the boat rides and the biriyani which Mario had brought along. We didn’t get any fish trawling though we saw tuna and king fish. A dolphin decided to play near our boat for some time. Had plenty of good fighting with don’t know what at the end losing each time. But the fight was exciting, It could be some big hammour or GT??? Planning to go on a night fishing trip sometime next month. Mike has left the place and Mario now runs the dive centre. Fishing should be good over the next two months (provided the sea is not choppy).

Planning some local fishing trips over the next two weeks as well.

Hi All,

Whats happening on the waters? Hows the king fish action. Been running around between Abu Dhabi & doha. Its been ages since I went out.Love to go next weekend.Lately been checking out some stuff on GT Popping ( Giant Trevally ) popping is casting surface plugs. Check the net out for "GT Popping". I know most of the guy know what Iam talking about but just wanted the new guys to share the exitement and ponder the possibilites along our coast. THe ideal spots for this tye of fishing is ofcourse on the east coast. I have seen this fish on the Dibba fish market ranging from 45 to 15 pounds. The modus operendi is drifting along the crags and rocks along the shore ( where the hills meet the water ) stay about 50 to 60 yards off the shore and cast into the rocks ( use popping plugs ) if you dont have them use floating Rapalas. Use large spinning reels with 20 LB mono. Use 60 to 80 lb Monofilament leader . No wire please.
THis is what I wanted to do but since I dont seem to find the time and the season is fast receding I thought may be some of you folks out there would try this and post some pictures if it works. Mike Ralph at dive Manta can arrange the boat and he would have the perfect knowledge about likely spots

go get em big ones!!

Guys,

The area I am talking about in on the breakwater at Ajman. I don't fish from the beach. You can drive as far as the sea level at the rock but then you have to walk right to the end to fish the point. Have been fishing here since a kid, not as good as it used to be but better than the beach. Make sure you leave about 20 mins to get back before dark as it is difficult to navigate in the dark. Havent been able to get much fishing in at the moment, always seems to be busy at work when the fishing season is in.

tight lines

Abedz,

Try one or two rigs just 3 feet below the water surface. Especially if you're baiting them with bally hoo (half beak)....This will work.

Hi Abedz,

You have to keep the float for a couple of hours or at least two to get some bite. 30 minutes is too short a time. But make sure you have some good fresh bait which does not get off the hook easily. Fish too like fresh bait...

Heyy,

Heber, we tried tht ... it was'nt bad ... but the problem is that it went to slow ... and its not as strong as the kite, so we dropped it. !!

we're facing a problem with the lines going down (rigs) as shown in u'r diagram ...
how can we solve this .... we're planning to make these rigs reach the ground for big catches ... how long shud it be ?? n shud it be a car cable rig for the live ballyhoo to swim freely

The guys around here use something similar to kite fishing, except there is no kite and this is very simple and made without any expense. All you need is a box made of thermacole, the size that can fit a jerry can in. Put the closed can inside the box and on one side of the box fix a sail made of thermacole or plastic. Right from the box comes the main line and floats on regular distances with as many rigs as you like. Bait is usually live ballyhoo. Once the float is ready and the wind blows into the sea, set your float on the water and it goes as far as you let it go. There are plenty of guys using this in the Jebel Ali area. I've attached a drawing of it.

Cheers

Heber

Hey guyz, how r u ??
Last week i promised da guyz to post some pictures of a new fishing method in UAE. but i guess i was too lazy to upload them .... n-wayz here's da story:

Da guyz and i once saw a picture of the great fishing method on the net, that is called "Kite-Fishing" ... we wanted to try and get one, but we discovered tht it'll cost us over 1500 Dhs to get it from newzealand to Dubai.. so what we did is, we built our own fishing kite, we bought hooks, sinkers, and 500 meters long (line)...
Our fist try was succesful but with no catches ... we will have to do some other changes to it ......

In order to use a fishing ktie ... u have to check for the weather (wind), open sea, no nets or boats close to you.. not closer than (1000 metre) ..... n-wayz if u saw any fishing kites in the skies ... then thts us :-) .... Keep da boats and the damn nets away !! :D ....

here r the pics ....
