hi chua ,
thanks for the advice chua , now i knw why i always say u hv lot of practicle fishing sence than these guys on net who dont even go near a fish and talk out of the hat .
i was thinking of griding the barbs a little so that it dont hurt the fish and smoothn it off

Hi All,
Just press on the barb of the hook to start with.
This will release the fish quickly without much damage. Occasionally, you loose one or two fish during the fights, that's ok.

Thanks for that post for the fish . I am sad i will miss a fishing buddy like you as u already decided to leave this forum . But it was really nice sharing my ideas with you .
I wanted one clarification from you if you dont mind . Which i thought of learnign from you if you come with me fising .
Here we all use barbed twisted hooks . I dont knw how can that be taken off just by jerking whn the fish is in the water .
Have you ever fished barracuda . Its its quite dangerous fish . It has long sharp teeths and they also have a taste for human flesh .
But i am sure there is a way of releasing this fish . But not the way you are suggesting . I have bought a long clipper like almunim die cast hook opener may be that can work if you take out the fish and then put your feet on the tail and try to unhook with that clipper .
But anways nice talking to you . I am sad that you are leaving this forum . I wish you had not left this forum .

Dear jammie ,
You can have your fishing lisence applied online at www.dm.gov.ae look for recreational fishing lisence . There are no fresh water fishing ponds here . Its either the creek or the sea . So all is salt water game . People normally use here spinning outfits . PENN 950ss is a good option . But again there are different brands .
Although i have seen few guys use bait caster . You can locally also buy tackles here in dubai but only the good reels like penn and shimono tends to be more expensive . But other items like hooks and rods and also lures are less expensive .
If you have glowing rapalas or rapalas with lights inside for night fishing please do bring for your self and also if possible for me . But mind you dont take deep runnes because u will loose them in rocks if u ar thinking of shore casting . Go for surface level only . I have heard in uk you have lighted lures for night fishing .
From shore swimming depth for lures should be ideally 2- 5 meters . Because mostly the shore line is like that depth barring few spots where its 11 meters.
Night fishing is important because in summer months when its too hot people like night fishing as day fishing is too hot then and more over in day time due to hot water fishes run away in the deep .
Small fishes normally come on live bait or shrimps,squid.macarel . Rapalas also do work but for bigger game fish out in the open sea .
The creek over here has got lot of rocks and there flows construction material derbis hence adviced even if u use rapalas here in the creek then go for surface level ones , not deep runners .
Fishes avail able in the creek are groupers and cat fishes mainly also queen fish and occationally barracuda and silver GT .
Out in the ocean there are lot of fishes a little deep . You can expect sharks , kings,durandao , sting rays , snappers , jacks , rock fish ( near the rocks ) .
But for surf fishing i would advice you a little stronger line . Say .50 to .50 with 25 lb test line . For creek 0.40 with 15 lb test line is perfect .
You can see my previous posts from the arcchives where i have given in details how to secure a fishing lisence . But you must have the following before you can apply one for .
1) COPY OF YOUR RESEDENTIAL VISA
2) COPY OF YOUR TENANCY CONTRACT
3) COPY OF YOUR PASSPORT
4) COPY OF YOUR PASSPORT SIZE PHOTO IN COLOUR
5) COPY OF DRIVING LISENCE ( OPTIONAL)

Hi Jamie,
It's good to know that someone willbe coming here to dubai & actually prepares himself before he gets here. I made a mistake of coming here & then getting my tackle together.
Anyway, The rod that you have is good enough to fish here. However, that too depends on what kind of fish you are looking to catch.
Most of us here in this forum catch fish to eat. Not sure of the others, but I usually catch just sufficient for myself & release the rest. The juvenile fish & the large fish are released back into the water.
Some of the species available here in Dubai from the 'COAST line' are Barracuda, Spangled emperor, khofer, silver grunts, queen fish, king fish, rays/kite fish, snappers, breams, grouper etc. There are different locations for differnt fish here. I have personally seen GT's, but have not been able to catch them.
I'm sure you are aware that there are different lures for different fish & sometimes we use live bait too. Any type of lure is available here. However, I have been unable to find poppers here, but have learned from another site on how to use regular lures as poppers, which I still have to try out.
I would advise you to use atleast a 30lb mono line as it is quite easy to lose your line if it is anything less than that, once the fish dive down it would shear against the rocks. The size of the fish we catch here varies from 100gms to 10+kg. So, one cant really predict what one might catch.
If you intend on going out by boat (which is quite expensive) then its a whole new scene.
Regarding the license, one will have to come here first, get your residence visa stamped in your passport, get your employment/labour card, get a place of your own (house) as you will require your house agreement copy along with the local water & electricity bill.
The minimum docs required for a fishing lisence are: (all scanned documents)
1) Photograph
2) Passport copy with visa page
3) labour card/employment card
4) Housing agreement
5) DEWA (water/electricity) bill
6) Driving lisence (not compulsory)
7) Car registration (not compulsory)
This lisence will be valid only in Dubai & not in the other emirates. People do fish without a lisence sometimes & get away with it. But if they are caught, they are fined, fishing gear confiscated & they could be arrested too. There are loads of rules / laws in the UAE & it is always a safer bet to know the rules or be with someone who is aware of the rules/laws of the land.

Greetings from East Swansea, Wales
I shall be relocating to Dubai at the end of this month and would like some information on the fishing options available in the region and also what tackle I should bring with me.
I was thinking of bringing my Shimano beastmaster travel rod and a fixed spool with 12-18lb line along with rapalas and general sea tackle (I guess the freshwater options are limited to people's koi ponds). Would this tackle be suitable for most occasions or is heavier beach casting tackle needed?
If someone could also give me some information on licenses required and also any books/websites recommended that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any replies and tight lines!

Pranab, thanks for the reply.
I bet you already have an instrument that would take the hooks off a barracuda. its called a pair of long nosed pliers.
to take your lure off you dont take the fish out of the water, you just grip the hook and shake it off the fish, and its done.
as for the stingrays you catch, you just cut as close to the hook as possible and set it free. the hooks will rust out in a week or so.
I know there are people under the bridge who take crabs, chinese or not doesnt matter...fine, its illegal and they should be stopped...i cant stop them, im not the authorities...there are guys who use nets as well...cant stop them either...but it doesnt mean that i'll follow them.
my contributions may be little, but at least i do my part...
by definition an "angler" is one who fishes for sport...so go figure.

dont get me wrong, if you can eat the fish you catch, go for it.
but your thing about exchanging it for more bait...i dont agree on. if you have money to buy a rod and reel, you have money to buy bait. simple as that...just as you can afford to buy fish when you want to eat fish. but thats just my two cents. doesnt mean you have to agree.
if fishing gets hard here in the UAE, its ok...for me it would make it more challenging and would only make it more fruitful for each release...and trust me...all of you wont be catching fish...but I will still be. :P |

Dear angler 13 ,
I am glad that you have voiced your views . In fact i was feeling bad when i pulled up 12 barracudas that day myself . I am always open to critisim . Because i feel if you keep your ears open you develop your self .
First of all welcome to the forum . Would you please join me one day in baracudda hunt and teach me how to unhook them without killing them . I really want to learn the art . Because the tools that are here if you use them they die automatically . Same problem with sting rays . If you have seen my earlier post you must hv seen i mentioned this problem .
Here at this part of the world people break the neck of barracuda because it has dangerous teeth than can bite off your hand .
May be you are more experienced than me in fishing and can give a little lesson .
So i open heartdly admit may be i was carried away because the fights were very very good so i caught so many of them .
But i must also add i did not take even one fish home and gave it to my friend . I do eat fish but all my friends know tht i will only take 2 /3 fish home because we are 3 members in my family .
Now coming to the point of over fishing . I am glad that you took interst to point me out about the no of fishes pulled up .
I will be glad if you can do somethign about over fishing here in uae . Every day night if you go under maktoum bridge chines guys take home may be 7 of them each 40/50 crabs in a basket .
Can you stop that please . Why dont u go up the authorities and complain to them and so some thing . There are people who are using net and they give big big advice and they dont havethem selves lisence to fish and use nets regularly .
I would be very glad to see if you can really do somethig about this problem .
By the way i am very open and straight forward . So dont take my words harshly . i wont change my habbit of eating fish . And i will keep eating one of them each day . Even if you critisize . I have seen hoards of white guys who talk big things like weapons of mass destruction then they them selves do the same nasty things .
That is not the way it should be . I see guys who buy so much of fish from fish market and talk big big lofty talks .
For your information i amd doing a research on fishing in uae . And i try to conserve them as much as i can . I am new to this sport . And because of that i do have some drawback which i am trying to recover . But one thing is there i do admit my mistakes . Would you also do the same . If you do you will be my best buddy in fishing . Once again dont take my words to the heart and hoping to meet you and do fishing jointly and learn a lot as i am novice in this sport . welcome to the forum.
hope you have a good time here. This group is all about sharing your fishing knowledge with each other.
so far this is the first trip that 4 of us ever went to the spot & only the 2nd time that I have met the others.
Its really good when you have a party planned & everything goes according to what you have planned. I have a barbecue party on thursday at Ajman beach @ 9:30pm. Right now the count is 37 people. It is just USD 125 per head, or you can take care of either fish or chicken or beef. I chose fish & managed to get sufficient. Feel free to join us, but let us know by tomorrow morning if you are interested & then we can dedicate some of the chores to you or you can contribute. We kept back some fish & the rest we exchange at the fish market to get more bait.

We don't consider ourselves sports fishermen. Oh no, we don't eat fish. We just decorate our living rooms with them. Either way, our fishing does no more damage to the environment than the "one big construction site on land and water". Thanks for the advice anyway. We really don't need it.

hi guys ,
was in dewa today morning near jebelali cant stop frm throwing the hooks seeing the calm water . Ended up with 5 queen fish . i never expected they fight like this . its prohibited to fish there but the security guards were happy to say some strong words to me and kept the catch for them . i escaped without any punishment .

That could be a cobia!!!!! But the guys there (Locals) told me that it is a sitchil and this was the first time i catch this type of fish. So yeah it could be. It took me more than 40 minutes to get out of the water, It was playing hard but in the end i won |

Hey lads!!
I am new to the forum here.. and was interested to know if any of u could advice me on how to get a fishing license in Dubai? I am currently fishing in Sharjah the area opp. the mamzar park...

That would be Sitchil as it is called here in the UAE. It comes once a month and comes in pairs (Male - Female) if you catch one of them you might be in a position to catch the other one, Because it will stay in the area until it finds it's partner. It is quite an expensive fish as weill the meat is white and very tasty. |

I have not been to Jaddaf to catch fish. I did go there on work, to meet some suppliers just yesterday. The place looked quite interesting, but I dont want to take any chances with the law in this country. As far as I know, we are only permitted to fish in 5 places in Dubai. The 5 spots are mentioned on the fishing lisence. They are Maktoum bridge, Garhoud bridge, al seef, Mamzar & Jumeirah beach. Anyone caught will be fined & proscuted by the law.

I was wondering did you get the pictures? I am planning to go to Maktoom Bridge. There is another good spot but i do not know if it is still allowed to go there (Jaddaf) we used to catch Sherri in big numbers, i am talking about 70, 80!!!!!! but that was during summer.
Have you ever been there, Jaddaf port? |

yes I go to Maktoum bridge almost every weekend.
In fact after catching the barracuda, I went to Maktoum & caught @ 30 Sherri (Spangled Emperor) in 1 1/2 hr.
The previous weekend I went with Heber from the forum & caught Nagroor (Silver Grunt) there. |

Thank you for your welcome.
I will send you two pictures to your email ID of the fish that i caught in RAK, but unfortunately as i told you i do not enjoy going there any more because of so many people go there, and i can barely have a space for one rod, so that i why i dedcided to shift to Dubai.
I used to fish on Maktoom bridge, but do not know if this is still a good spot to catch, do you go there by any chance and how is the catch?
Anyway will be sending you the pics.

HI Guys
I just registered on this site. And looking forward to hear your news about fishing.
I always go to RAK for fishing and sometimes i had few good catch, but it is getting very crowded there where you do not enjoy fishing any more. Would anyone recommend a spot for me in Dubai where i can go fishing and enjoy some fishing moments?

Hi guys as promised, my update
I had a pretty interesting weekend.
I went to Maktoum bridge (Dubai) & fished there for some time. I did manage to catch about a dozen sherri (Spangled empror) & was actually pretty dissappointed as I kept on losing a lot of bait. (Shrimp) This was rather strange as I couldnt even feel the fish nibble. I am still trying to figure out what was eating my bait. It could probably be crabs.
While fishing, the water was suddenly disturbed with schools of little fish jumping out of the water. I realised that there must be some larger fish preying on them. I tried my rapala without any success. I tried different lures, floating & sinking type. Silver, blue, orange, yellow, green colours, but didnt get anything. At one point of time the fish came right upto the water edge & with the sunlight hitting from overhead I could see a shoal of @ 20 - 25 GT feeding on smalled fish. This was a real teasing time for me & I felt helpless.
Anyway that was my story for Friday.
In the night I first checked with Heber to find out his plans for Sat since Pranab works on Sats. He mentioned that he planned on taking a trip for barracuda, not far from where we live. @ 10 - 15 mins drive. We dicided to meet at 5am since sunrise was at 5:48 and we expected them to hit around sunrise. later on in the evening I spoke to Pranab & learnt that he was coming fishing too. A Fantastic way to start your day :o)
We reached ther @ 5:30 & kept of spining till we got bored & decided to move to another location for Mangrove Jacks & hamor. I started packing up to move at @ 6:15 when Heber decided to spin for one last time. He instantly landed one and this was a good enough sign that they had now arrived. I immediately started unpacking my rod, while Pranab was shouting for me to start spinning. Knowing that barracuda feed in a particular area for @ 40 - 45 mins we then started landing them one by one. In that short span of time, the 3 of us landed 23 of them, though some not big.
I lost 2 rapalas, , but had a great time.
This was the first time in my life that I have ever caught barracuda & the fight was an absolute thrill. I should be going there more often now, but doubt that I will keep the catch. I dont want to empty the ocen of the thrill that I get this sport. I did keep the 6 Cudas that I caught as I'll be going for a barbecue this weekend :o)

The catch: 23 lined up, lost @ 10 by careless handling & 5 broken lines.

I dont really know what the weight of the fish was, but we were struggling to carry them all back to the car.
I then went to Maktoum bridge & caught @ 30 Sherii in 1hr 15mins. So in all it was a fantastic day for me. |

MY RECORDED TIME IS 4 THROUGH AND 4 BARACUDDA OF OVER 7-8 KGS BUT FEW YEAR BACK.AFTER 4 PCS MY SON TOOK MY FISHING ROD AND SAD LET ME TRY NOW LET OTHER CATCH TOO. AROUND 5 YEAR BACK RECORDED DAY WAS WHEN ALL OF US (OUR GROUP) CAUGHT 75 NOS OF BARACUDDAS EACH OF THEN WEIGHT WAS FROM 5 KAGS UP 12 KGS SO MUCH OF FISH THAT THERE WAS NO PLACE TO KEEP FISH AT A PLACE LIKE MAKTOUM BRIDGE WE HAD TO DISTRIBUTE FISH AS IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE FOR US TO TAKE THEM TO PARKING AS MOST OF THE TIME I CARY TROLLY WITH ME. 2 YEAR BACK RECORDED DAY WAS 35 BARACUDDA OUT OF 35 12 I CAUGHT. LAST YEAR RECORDED CAT FISH WE 4 OF US CAUGHT 32 PCS THE BIGEST MUST BE AROUND 8 TO 9 KG.
WELL KEEP IT UP BUT BAD LUCK FISH IS REDUCED AL MOST FINISHED FROM DUBAI BECAUSE OF DISTURBANCE IN THE WATER.

LAST NIGHT I AFTER I HAD THE PARTY AT AUH I RECEIVED A CALL FRM MR IFTIKHAR THT HE IS FISHING THERE . REACTION : I STEERED THE CAR FROM AUH CORNICHE AND I WAS THERE AT DUBAI BEACH BY RECORD 49 MINS . MR IFTIQUAR WAS SUPRISED TO SEE ME THERE SO FAST . I SAT THERE WITH HIM FOR 20 MINS THERE WERE NO SIGN OF BARACUDA AND MR IFTIQUR WAS TELLING IT WAS BETTER TO GO TO MAKTHOUM INSTEAD .
I FELT BAD BECAUSE I SUGGESTED HIM THE SPOT . I WENT BACK HOME DREAMING OF THE FEROCOUS BARRACUDA . I WOKE UP FROM A CALL FROM SALMAN SAYING HE IS AT THE SPOT .
I TOOK ONLY 7 MINS TO GET READY AND I HAD MY CAR KEYS AT THE IGNITION MAKING MY SURF CAR THROBBING . AS I REACHED THE BEACH IT WAS A MISTY MORNING . THE SEA WAS CALM . I SAW THE BEAUTIFUL HAZE HANG OVER THE SILVERY BACKDROP OF THE IRANIAN WATERS STREACHING TO THE BEACUTIFUL JUMERIAH COAST LINE . I SAW SALMAN HAD ALREADY PICKD UP THE FIRST BARRACUDA A SMALL ONE . HE WAS HAPPY .
AS I ALWAYS DO I TOOK TIME TO CHOOSE MY SPOT . AT THE CENTER OF THE HUGE STONE MOUNT . I SAW HEBER AND KEYUR TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROCK NOT GETTING ANY BITES . I TOLD THEM TO SHIFT NEAR MY SPOT . I THREW THE LINE TWICE BUT NO BITES .
I WAS THINKING THESE GUYS WILL KILL BE IF THE RETURN WITH ONE SMALL SALMAN S BARACUDA .
MY INSTINCT TOLD ME AFTER THE SILVER HAZE GOES OFF AND THE SUN HITS PROPERLY TURNING THE SILVER WATER INTO TOURQUISE GREEN THE GREAT KILLERS WILL ARRIVE . WHILE OTHERS WERE BUSY THROWING THEIR RODS I JUST LAYED BACK ON A BLACK PREHISTORIC STONE AND WAS RESTING MY SHOULDERS AS I CAUGHT 5 BARRACUDAS YESTERDAY MORNG AND I HV CASTED ABOUT 30 TIMES . I TOLD HEBER I NEED REST .
OUR ELITE TEAM WAS GETTING IMPATIENT WITHOUT ANY STRIKE . I WAS WONDERING AM I SO WRONG ABOUT THE SPOT . OR IS IT I THINK I KNW FISHING BUT I FORGET I AM ONLY 2 MONTH OLD IN THE SPORT .
I REMEMBERD ONE OF MY JAPANES FISHING BUDDY TAKAHASHI TELLING ME PRANAB U MUST KNOW HOW TO READ THE WATER BEFORE U START FISHING . I WAS DOUBTING MY OWN SKILLS AND FEELING BAD FOR THE TEAM .
BUT MY GUT INSTINCT TOLD THAT YESTERDAY I STUCK THE FIRST BARRACUDA AT 6.30 . SO WHY DONT I REST M SHOULDERS TILL 6.30 .
I STILL REMMBER AS I INCLINED ON THE ROCK WITH MY BOTH HANDS MAKING A CUSION ON THE ROUGH BOULDER , MY CURIOUS EYES CAUGHT A GLIMSE OF THE SILVER STEAK IN THE TOURQUISE WATER .
I SCREAMED OUT TO HEBER ITS TIME NO MORE RESTING OF SHOULERS . HEBER AND KEYUR WAS ALREADY THROWING RODS . IN FACT KEYUR WHO GOT IMPATINET HAD ALREADY PACKED UP TO MOVE TO MARINA .
NEXT WHT HAPPNED WAS PHENMENON . WITTNISSED BY A GROUP OF PHILIPINNO FISHER MEN WHO WERE STANDING BEHIND US .
OUR ELITE TEAM SET ABLAZE THE GULF WATERS . YOU CAN ONLY HEAR THE WHHOOOOOP OF THE CASTING RODS AS OUR RAPALAS WIZZED PASSED THE THIN AIR AND DIVED DEEP IN THE BEAUTIFUL GULF WATER .
AND ALL OF US STARTED TO PICK UP THE KILLERS .
THERE WERE A APOINT I FORGET MY SHOULDE PAIN AND I WENT CRAZY CASTING . ONE OF THE BIG BABYS TOOK AWAY MY OWN RAPALA BUT THERE WAS MY FRIEND HEBBER TO GIVE ME A SPARE ONE .
WE ALL BLASTED THE SURF AGAIN AND AGAIN . IT WAS A FIGHT WITH NATURE AND MAN . THE KILLERS FISH TOOK 3 RAPALAS BROKE SALMANS REEL .
BUT AT THE END WE HAD THE LAST LAUGH .
OUR ELITE TEAM PICKED UP AROUND 25 BARRACUDAS . SOME OF THEM HUGE ONES WEIGHING MAY BE 3/4 KGS LENGTH ABOUT 4 / TO 4 1/2 FEET . AND I TELL YOU THEY ARE LOVELY . WITH PINK STREAK MIXED WITH THEIR GORGEOUS SILVER AND ASH STRIPES .
AT ONE POINT OF TIME WE RAN OUT OF BAG TO PUT FISH . I REMBEBER AT ONE POINT HEBER TOLD ME PRANAB GIVE TIME TO UNHOOK DONT CATCH SO MUCH THAT WE CANT UNHOOK AND RELEASE THE RAPALAS .
OHHH BOY IT WAS A GREAT DAY AS ALL OF US SCREAMED WHEN ONE AFTER ANOTHER FISH WE STRUCK , THER AIR WAS HEAVY WITH CHANTS OF COME ONE BABYYY BE ON THE SHORE .
WE WERE IN SUCH A FRENZY ALL FOUR OF US WHEN I LANDED A FISH IT ALMOST BIT HEBERS BUTTOCKS . LUCKLY HE WAS IN JEANS .
HEBEBR LOST A HUGE ONE WHICH HE PICKED UP WAS OVER THE ROCKS AND EVEN HEBER WAS TRYING TO CATCH THE FISH . BUT THE FERECOUS FIGHTER SLIPPED BETWEEN HEBERS HANDS AND THROUGH HIS LEG SLIPPIED THE GEORGEOUS CREATURE WITH THE SIGH OF THE PHILLIPINO GUYS STANDING ON THE ROCKS AS IT SKIDDED OVER THE BROWN ROCK AND RIGHT INTO THE WATER .
HEBER WAS UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED . AND WHO WONT BE IF IT WAS MY CASE I WILL BE IN TEARS MAN .
OVER ALL AMONG 4 OF US WE MUST HV MISSED ABOUT 10 BARRACUDAS TODAY AFTER HOOKING THEM . AND YET AT THE END IT WAS 25 OF THEM .
OUR CAMERA MEN KEYUR HAS ALL THE LOVELY PICS OF THE CATCH I HOPE HE UPLOADS THEM FOR OTHERS TO SEE .
I WISH THOSE GUYS WHO BOASTS OF BIG FISHING BOATS SEES OUR CATCH . WHO WOULD SAY SHORE FISHER MEN ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THE BOAT FISHER MEN WHO TAKE THEIR PRICEY BEAUTIFUL BABES ALON GWITH THEM IN THE SEA TO CATCH FISH .
IT PROVED ONCE MORE A DETERMINATION AND LIMITATION OF MEN MAKE HIM REACH AND CROSS EVERY HURDLE .
LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST I WOULD LIKE TO THANK HEBER ,KEYUS , SALMAN FOR PUTTING FAITH ON ME AND TRYING THIS WONDERFUL SPOT ALONG WITH ME .

THE BARRACUDA AT LAST
I HAD BEEN TRYING FOR BARRACUDA WITH OUR GREAT FREIND MR IFTIQAR . ALTHOUGH HE DID CATCH ONE INFRONT OF ME BUT I NEVER DID .
WE HAD WAITED THROUGHY OUT THE NIGHT FROM 12 O CLOCK TILL 4 EARLY MORNING ONE DAY LAST WEEK BUT WIHOUT ANY LUCK .
I THEN READ AN ARTICLE THE BEST TIME FOR BARRACUDA IS EARLY MORNING FROM 4 TO 6 DURING THE SUNRISE PERIOD AND ALSO DURING SUN SET .
SO I TRIED TO CHECK THAT THEORY AND WENT FOR THE BEACH . I GOT UP AT 3.30 TODAY EARLY MORNING . TIED THE HOOKS WITH THE STEEL LEADERS AND HEADED FOR DUBAI BEACH .
WHEN I REACHD THERE SOMEHING TOLD ME I IWLL GET THEM TODAY . SEA WAS CALM . IN FACT SO CALM IF U SCREAM OUT MAY BE OUR IRANIAN BROTHERS CAN HEAR ACROSS THE OCEAN . I LOVED THE SMELL OF THE CLEAN SEA . AT THE SPOT ONE PAKISTANI GUY WAS ALRADY WITH THE ROD . I WAS THE SECOND TO ARRIVE THERE . GUESS WHAT WITHIN FEW SECONDS I HAT THE HUGE BARRACUDA HIT . THE HIT OF A PEDATOR FISH AND I STARTED TO REEL IN . IT WAS A BIG ONE , THE FIRST BIG BARRACUDA FOR ME . WHEN I KEPT IT ON THE ROCKS IT SUDDENLY STRUGGLED FREE AND WENT INTO THE WATER . I HEARD THE HUGE DISAPPOINTMET OF THE IRANIAN CROWD BEHIND ME .

FOR A MOMENT IT SEEMED I AM IN A CRICKED FIELD BACKED BY CHEERING SUPPORTERS . I REELED UP THE FISH AND JUMPING CAME TWO IRANIAN GUYS IN FULL GLEE . ONE CAUGHT THE TAIL AND THE OTHER GRABBED IT BEHIND THE FIN AND UNHOOKED MY LURE .
THE GUY TOOK OFF THE FISH AND RAN AROUND THE SMALL ROUND ABOUT BEHIND ME AND POLITEY ASKED ME IF HE CAN HAVE IT . WHT MORE COULD I HV SAID BUT AGREED WITH HIS DEMAND .
ITS NICE FISHING IN THIS KIND OF ATMOSPHERE WHERE PEOPLE SUPPORTS A FISHERMAN LIKE A REAL SPORTS PERSONALITY . I WAS TOUCHED .
AND THEN STARTED THE BARRACUDA FIGHTS . I CAUGHT IN ALL 5 BARRACUDA IN ONE HOUR . I DISTRIBUTED 3 KEPT 2 FOR MY FAMILY .
I REMEMBERED MR IFTIQUAR WHO IS MY GURU FOR BARRACUDA TRANING , WHO TOLD THE FIST DAY WE MET AT MAKTHOUM , PRANAB YOU TALK LIKE YOU HV BEEN FISHING FOR YEARS . WHEN I TOLD I NEVER CAUGHT A BARRACUDA BUT HV READ HUNDRED OF PAGES ABOUT THEIR BEHAVIOR THT THEY FEED VERECIOUSLY FOR 45 MINS THREE TIMES A DAY AND POUNCE UPON SILVERY MATERIALS THTS WHY LURE FISHING IS BEST FOR BARRACUDA .

Keyur: Certainly not the emperor coz. he is spangled. Can't be the queen as the king is alive. So it should be the king. Funny that both the male and female are called king. But why is the (talang) queen fish named so though it belongs to an entirely different species??
I remember a few years(5) back there used to be guys at the breakwaters fishing for the king and then sell it at the Karama fish market. This was their part time job.
It is getting hotter and though there will be fish in the ocean, it will not be possible for us to fish. Moreover, fish will move to deeper waters where the temperature is just right for them. Normally there is less fishing activity from June to September and the forum goes silent. This summer I do hope to see atleast Pranab at Maktoum or Jumeirah quite often. Guess we should all meet atleast twice a month to fish even if it is just pulling out empty hooks.
Would like to hear from Mr. Ifthkar about barracuda fishing during summer months. Guys who did fish last summer could you please let us know what we could expect this year?
Pranab: Guess something needs to be done about the crabs. They're overdoing it. Think we need to tell them that it is illegal and they could be prosecuted.

The king fish & the queen fish are two entirely different species, something like an orangutan & a baboon & the emperor is the smallest of the lot (which you call babies)......now now now......theres a lot of confusion......lol |

Thanks Keyur for the advise. Guess you're right. True to the saying "Fish & tide wait for no man" Keyur, also remember, 'whereever there is a Queenfish, there is a Kingfish. So there must be Kingfish at Maktoum. Otherwise how can you get all the small fish there??? Think...
Cleo, as you said catching 4 big kingfish at Maktoum is indeed unbelievable !!! Your friend must be a lucky expert.
Its absoultely crazy the way the guys are netting crabs at Maktoum which is completely illegal. And why do they need 50 crabs per day??

yesterday was not good fishing . i reachd the spot with ronald , had no intention of fishing just wanted to show the spot to ronald who is a new member for the forum . there was this arabic guy who was fishing from 5 evening and two chinese as usaual they are dumping crabs in their buckets which i really dont like .
i threw the line just to show ronald , first hook we lost to the rock very unusual in makhtoum .
so when later salman arrived and lend me a hook i thew again . arabic guy got only 2 big cats from evening . i ended up with a big cat this time giving a good fight . i left after one and a half hour . But no other sign of any fish . I think if u stay for 1 and a half hour and only one big fish its a bad day then. anyways catch you later. |

I know the problem. Didnt you read the the good time was between 6:47 & 7:22 ?? I'm sure you must have reached there a little after 7 & by the time you prepared your rods / line & cast it, it must have been 7:23. So you just missed the fish. Remember, this is Dubai & not India. Everything here happens on time. Does a bus wait for you here ? NO ! Same with the fish. They have their fixed time. Next time dont be late & you will get plenty of fish. :o)

are you sure that your friend caught kingfish ? I have not seen anyone catch kingfish or even heard of anyone seeing kingfish at Maktoum bridge. This is really surprising, knowing that kingfish prefer the open waters. Kingfish usually break the surf while swimming & are very fast movers. They grow upto 2.5m (over 8 feet long) & over 70kgs (over 155lb)
I have seen them enter the breakwaters in Sharjah, but nothing here in Dubai, especially since Maktoum Bridge is so much inland.
However, if this is true, then it is absolutely fantastic. Catching one is a feat & if he caught 4...WOW ! that is surely some kind of record.
Could you tell me the size of the fish that your friend caught ? what bait was he using ? What lure? As far as I know or have heard, kingfish can only be caught with live bait or lures.
I have seen 'Queen fish' at maktoum & I have caught it myself.
It would be great if we could meet your friend. Maybe he can teach us a thing or two ? |

Was at Maktoum from 7 to 9 pm last night. There were about half a dozen people fishing and the total catch was 3. All three catfish. I didn't get anything except frog fish (plenty of them)taking the bait everytime and small ones which were returned to grow bigger. My wife got a medium sized catfish. Maybe fishing would have improved after 9 pm.

As per the knowledge from one of my very close friend , who is fishing expert in Dubai Today Evening between 6.47 and 7.22 is the best time to catch Big king Fish from near Maktoum bridge. yesterday night he got 4 big king fishes and 3 Cat fishes between 8.30 pm & 9.20 Pm. Really this is un belivable.May be I will be there today around 9.00Pm

YESTERDAY REPORT
IT WAS A GOOD DAY AT MAKTHOUM . I WATCHED EVERY ONE PICK UP LOTS OF FISH . AND THE ICIING ON THE CAKE WAS WHEN A SILVER CAT PULLED AWAY THE ROD AND REEL OF ONE OF THE ANGLERS . I ALWYS WARN PEOPLE TO LOCK THE ROD TO THE RAILS IN MAKTHOUM AS THE BIG CATS WILL PULL YOUR GEAR BEFORE YOU CAN IMAGINE .
WE ALL HEARD A HUGE THUD AND THE NEXT THING WE SAW WAS A HUGE SILVER CAT FISH PULLING AWAY A 11 FEET BLACK ROD WITH THE REEL . WE TRIED TO CAST ANOTHER ROD TO TRY TO RETRIVE THE FLOATING ROD BUT WITHOUT VAIN .
THE EXCITMENT AT MAKTHOUM WAS SO MUCH THAT OUR SINGAPOREAN FRIEND CHUA WHO IS AN EXPERT CUSTOM ROD BUILDER , WHO CAME TO HELP ME WITH ONE OF MY GREHOUND RODS TOLD ME HE MUST JOIN TOMORROW FOR SOME CAT FIGHTS WHICH ARE BLAZING THE WATER S AT MAKTHOUM . AVERAGE FISH TAKEN BY FISHERMEN YESTERDAY WAS APPROX 8/10 FISHES . WHICH IS REALLY GOOD CATCH PER PERSON ANY ONE WHO STAYED 1 HOUR OR MORE.

Thanks for the invitation . Yes i am doing a self motivated research of per hour catch in coastal regions of uae and in the dubai creek . So i regularly visit fishing spots of uae and save the data in my laptop . So many a times u will see me at fishign spots not always fishing but looking at the colour of water and watching tide change and effect of marine activity accordingly .
Secondly i dont fish in office hours . But when ever i am near the water i watch it .
I am very new to this sport and want to develop a infracture of this sport in uae . I want to cut down overfishing and want this to remain like a sport . Its very sad to see people using nets which is forbidden and catching juvinile fish . I always try to educated people of not doing it .
I am into this hobby for 2 months now . But i am a very open minded person who is trying to gather knowledge . I talk to different fisherman and learn things from them . I dont have an ego to gather knowledge . Like when i met people like Mr Ifthar ,keyur , heber or moh tajiq i learn immensly . What ever i write here on the forum is just to share my knowledge with my fisher friends .
About the rods and the reel which i put for sale on this forum . They are really very expensive and good quality reel which i want to sell because i am now looking for a saltiga daiwa . Hello Iftkhar,
I too wasnt happy with the fishing on Saturday. Friday was good, as most of the fish caught were big ones. The big silver fish with small spots is called 'Silver Grunt' in english & 'Nagroor' in Arabic. It is a very tasty fish :o)
We could try & meet up this weekend. I should be out fishing on friday & saturday, but I am not sure of the time as it depends on the tide. I will let you know the time, once I check the tide table. I usually dont fish in the nights, as I prefer spending some time at home since my day at work is very hectic & tiring.
I will check with Pranab too & find out what his plans for the weekend are.
