Hi Abu Catcher, Once you are out of The Buteen, head for the Shiping channel that leads into Abu Dhabi M eena. You might find some fish in the general area around the red Bouy marked 10 or 11. It is pretty warm out there . Take a lot of fluids and keep yourself well hydrated. Jeen |

Hey Chris, Take it easy pal. If you believe you are right on something than take a stance and fight it out, like a man. Running away won't help you or anybody else. I have seen a lot of people do the same over petty matters, but in the end who were the losers? I bet people like Angler13 do privately peek into the forum now and then to see what's going on, but cannot overcome their over bloated egos to write again. I even suspect some may have rejoined by other names! I don't even know you, so your leaving wont really make any difference to me, but I think this forum needs a few who can speak out their minds, and then again, think of it man... this forum is not owned by you or I or anybody else who writes here; nay, it is not even moderated by one of us, so why do you want to be a sissy? Come on man, let's get a healthy debate going! I have said enough... the choice is yours. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi guys, this is getting rather interesting here.....I might add......seems like a hot spicy Indian curry :o) Btw, Thanks to some anglers we get some good advice to follow up on. It is rather unfortunate when people fail to understand what is being said & take this to be a personal battle. This site has seen quite a few of those messages & I do hope it stops (I know it never will). Just a suggestion.....if anyone can give better advice than what has been given please feel free to do so. Else please dont run down someone who is being helpful & giving advice. A lot of people are already discouraged from posting anything here & that includes myself. the new comers here & everyone will lose out if people keep on letting their pride & ego interfere. the choice is yours !!! |

Hey Chris, Sorry man. My apologies. you are right. the first fish( the lighter coloured Grouper) was caught on daiwa sealine reel loaded with 12 lb line and the rod was a 6.6 feet shimano rated for 20lb. Well the second darker fish and the last picture of the bigger fish was caught with the tackle I described to you earlier. You may be able to see the rod and reel resting inside the cornish hand rail / fenncing. However I was generally making a comment on big fish on lighter tackle and my replies to you were made in good spirit and in a very adult man to man banter that anglers like you and me should generally be comfortable with. Also A forum like this, does not I hope, generally require too much of formal introductions. All members are deemed to be old friends, no matter how long they have been on the forum. I apologise once again if I have offended you in any way . And PLEASE DONT DROP OUT OF THE FORUM. My best friend has always been my worst critic. Regards, Jeen |

hey everybody dear chris seems u are quite the hothead just like the popular rapala colour.just take it easy man like in the eagles song.all jeen was tryin to do was enlighten the local fishing community that sportfishing is an artform n not the mindless killing of sportfish. catching 5 pound fish on 50 lb tackle is as bad as netting or dynamiting.also such excellent catches by such young anglers are to be encouraged instead of being derided immaturely.as an answer to your previous question i have caught quite a few groupers on light tackle. To me trolling in the uae requires tackle of maximum 20-30 lb unless you are fishing more than 15 miles out. and u seem to be all of 15 yards.let us hope ur further posts if any are of a less vicious nature. happy fishing to everyone else |

jeen, first of all my friend I did not insult your kids, I didn't even insult you. second of all I'm not dumb, c'mon man that reel in picture only loads 150 meters of 10lb mono? who are you kidding?! thats a big ass reel, its bigger than the person's hand. unless that person is a midget, you won't make me believe thats a small reel. And don't get cocky on me man, were just discussing facts here... So you go fish with your kids, maybe you need some lessons from em... I'm outta this forum... Hi Chris,Keyur, Keyur all fish were caught from the Abu Dhabi East road cornish. And Chris my friend you insult my kids, these guys were fishing from age 5 . My younger son makes his own spinners and spoons since age 10 and has given many a fish a bad tooth ache! As for the tackle used. The line was 10Lb berkley, the bite piece 3' (leader) 40lb and the plugs used are rapala floating plugs about 4". The guys start walking along the cornish and start casting and retrieving non stop till they get a hook up. The fish normally hit the lure on the surface . They maintain a breaking strain equal to almost the limit of the line and do not let the fish dive back into the water . THe flexibility of the rod is used to tire the fish . THe drag almost never comes into play. The reel is a cheap 40 dirham taiwanese reels that can load about 150 meters of 10 lb mono. Talk about big fish on small line well, forget it. I think my kids should take you fishing some time. Tight Lines, Jeen |

Dear tayeb , I would suggest you to get out for fuj /kof today night by 10 . Because by the time you reach there and find a suitable spot it should not be later than 1 o clock because tomorrow high tide being 3.20 . So you can hope to get some good ones before high tide comes in . As you travel along the east coast from dolphin round about towards baidhya mosque you will find several piers and you can select any one of them . The fish variety is really nice in these areas . In fact i would have loved to join you on the trip but my car is giving me some trouble so cant risk such a long drive . By the way take fresh bait with you . If you want to buy the bait locally the good place is fishing port of omani dibba where you can get it real cheap . If you are intersted in boating trips let me know i can fix you up with some boat man in dibba for decent charges . regards 0506789546 |

Jeen Raj, You put a big smile on my face my friend... That's a "light" tackle to you?! Seriously, if you call that rod and reel combo in the picture light tackle, I'd hate to imagine what you'd call a medium outfit... Sorry my friend, but that outfit is bigger than my damn large spinning outfit and I consider it already a "heavy" outfit. And also not to be distrustful, but I don't believe your using 10lb test line on that outfit. The length of a rod doesn't make it "light" my friend, and a size 5000 up reel (which I think your using) isn't "light" also. Hey I'm pretty impressed with your catch, but "light" tackle on such a grouper and that close to rocks?! You must be one hell of a skilled angler or a very lucky one... Again, please check you description of "LIGHT TACKLE" before making any claims... Tight Lines! |

heyy chris grouper on light tackle is not really a big deal.i personally have caught quite a few and even my kids get in on the action sometimes.tackle are 6'6 rods and light reels with 10 lb line some pics to illustrate |

Hi Everyone, These days since its very humid and hot, most of us do not go for fishing and the few who venture outside – get disappointed. Don’t get disappointed, at least the new comers can practice your throws, and even if you don’t catch anything – you still learn something out of it. It was nice to see at least one of them with rather good catch. Good luck to you all. Waiting for winter season, so that we all can enjoy our fishing, and this forum too. Any news from you guys, any catch, any advice. Keep it up. Ronald. |

Udupa, why is it a shame? I was trolling for big fish, therefore the heavy outfit. besides how do you know it fought poorly, have you caught a grouper while trolling before? also that size of a grouper on light tackle? I'd like to see you catch one on a light tackle... Oh by the way, my description of light tackle is a "light" outfit with 10lb test line or lower... I'd rather catch a 3kg. cuda on a light outfit than a 3kg. grouper on the same outfit... |

hello chris very nice grouper there. shame that it was caught on such heavy tackle though.Must have been a very poor fight im sure..these fish are best caught on light tackle so that they atleast pose a challenge to the angler..better luck next time. very nice lure though. is it a rapala magnum xrap 30 trolling lure.has it produced any other species in the past??? udupa |

Hi Keyur, Thanks! for the location. I took a look at the store. The prices were really really great. They had some wonderful boat roads and one 3m Mitchel spinning rod. That was a bit longer for me. I can at best keep one with 2.7m.length. That is the maximum length that can be kept horizontally in my small car. They had a nice Mitchel Boat 210. I alomst bought it. Then decided to back out as I do not seeing me fishing out of a boat in the near future. In case you know some place where one get a chance to look for some good rod in Dubai / UAE, pl. tell us. udupa, there are fishes that school up with other fish specie...there are some instances where you catch several species at the same time on the same boat. he did catch a kingfish, but since the "monster" got away, we really cant verify for sure, so him landing one kingfish doesnt really validate the fact that the one that got away is also a kingfish...from the way it stripped line, it could have been a whale...or a whale riding a pick up truck. hehehehehehe... |

dear kit as per my reading of the account it is quite clear that our friend jim did actually land the fish and is quite sure of its identity.also considering that these fish are often in schools or groups of 3-4 individuals it is my opinion that all of the fish were kingfish. just curious but if anyone on this forum has actually caught a wahoo in the persian gulf, please do tell. cheers udupa |

so that wouldnt be wahoo if you were fishing form shore, there are only a few places in the world that you can catch these guys from shore...hawaii is one. could be a huge stingray...or a kingfish, which you caught. if you are land based, then i would say you didnt set your drag correctly. you can definately whoop a kingfish on 15lbs line...more so on 30...you just have to set the drags right. next time that happens jim, dont max out your drag...it will pop your line. palm the spool if you're using spinning gear...do that earlier on to get some more pressure on the fish...also, hold your rod as far back as you can...this should turn the fish. |

hi jim nice to see someone finally talking about fish in double digits.i am absolutely positive that the fish you landed was a narrow barred spanish mackerel, a close relative of the wahoo but definitely not the same species.i completely agree with jeen that wahoo are not to be found in the waters of the persian gulf but i have heard of wahoo taken along the coast of oman. also dear keyur could you post the pic of the baby kingfish..always wanted to see what the juvenile looks like.often the fry look quite different than mature specimens cheers udupa |

From experience, it is hard to collect lines if the fish is more than a 100m from your standing. Back the boat and walk the dog, (if you are on one) else you are likely to be exhausted from fighting the long length and the added friction/drag from the seawater, and above all your fish on the far end. If the fish is not stopping at the 100m mark, chances are you are going to get spooled. Once a while they win! |

1- Lock you drag tight. your loosing your fish anyway this way. 2- or, free spool you reel so the fish feels no tention on the line and your chances are higher to land the fish and not getting spooled. option 1. you lose the fish option 2. you lose the fish and have a big lump in your throat coz the line got cut...thanks to the backlash that happened when you flipped the freespool lever. point 1. set your drag correctly and guess what, you can add more pressure by thumbing the reel. if you are using spinning gear, you can palm the spool. there are ways to add pressure just by positioning your rod correctly so much so that even on 20lbs test line, you can land an absurdly huge wahoo...the key is point number 2. USE YOUR BOAT...BACK DOWN ON THE FISH IF IT THREATENS TO SPOOL YOU OUT. |

mitchell avocet - the avocet is an ok reel. i wouldnt really call it spectacular but definately something you could use. i had that reel and it caught me some fish casting on the rocks at the open beach. it can handle some good sized fish, but i would doubt it if it was a big fish since it doesnt have an alum. body and would definately break if you go head to head with a good fish. |

if you are on a boat and somethign big hits, dont wait until you get spooled out. there is such a thing as "backing the boat"...that would keep you from spooling out. hammering down on a fish works only if you still have a lot of line left as the arbor is thick and the drag settings are still correct. a diminished arbor means that your drags arent at 30% anymore, so naturally your line WILL BREAK. a wahoo is a wonderful fish...it will make you cry for your mother when you hook it... |

Hi Guys, Jim, welcome to the forum. Well guys ,the Wahoo and the "King fish" ( narrow barred spanish are two different fish) THe wahoo is not found in the persian gulf. However they are both Mackrels and are great game fish though I would rate the Wahoo a step ahead of the King Fish in terms of speed of the intial run when hooked, and the sheer agression while hitting the lure or bait. The Drag setting for the reels is generally 30% of the breaking strain of the line so if you are fishing 30Lb you set the drag at around 4 to 5 kg or 10 Lb. The "King Fish" runs for about 50 to 60 meters on the intial run and if your drag is smooth your knots right and you have a wire trace in front the fish is almost 100% yours. Iam attaching a couple of pictures of fish we caught in the past to show the difference between the fish. Hi Jim, Welcome to fishing forum. Its nice to have someone from another GCC……. Thanks for your story – it was interesting. 21 kgs…….great catch. It’s difficult to digest how you managed to bring her out……bravo. Keep us informed about more stories. If anyone of you don’t get fish, don’t panic or loose hopes……better luck apoz. after 2 months. Fishes also don’t prefer to come out like us. They too prefer air-conditioned zones. Best of Luck, Ronald. |

Hi Jim, Nice story, I agree with fishpals it must have been a wahoo and it's the same fish that hit both of your lines. If the fish is going to spool you and you think you might loose your fish. You have 2 options. 1- Lock you drag tight. your loosing your fish anyway this way. 2- or, free spool you reel so the fish feels no tention on the line and your chances are higher to land the fish and not getting spooled. Good Luck |

Hey Jim! You must have hit a wahoo, 21kg will require a pickup to haul it back. Unless you chop into 2.. fishpals |

HI Jim, welcome to the forum. Nice to have someone from another GCC......makes the fishing even more interesting. Asmi, Pranab is still sick. I spoke to him on yesterday after my fishing trip. It was ok.....not good as per my regular catch, but I did get a few fish. Managed 3 catfish (Al Seef), 3 snappers (Maktoum) & 1 kingfish also at Maktoum. I know that its hard to believe that I did get a kingfish at maktoum, thats why I have taken some pics.....its even harder to believe the size of that monster.... a whole 3 long.....yes, you read right.... 3 inch long......hahahaha ! I was reeling in while packing up & was surprised to find something at the end of my line...... I took some photos of it before releasing it. All fish caught were released as the snappers wer not of any significant size to keep. The summer months are really unpredictable. If you are lucky you will get a good catch or else return empty handed. One must take note of the tide & the time of the day while fishing. Open waters / break waters are the best during the summer months. Asmi, dont be dissappointed if you dont get anything in summer. The best months are from Mid-Oct to April. In case you need to talk about anything, feel free to call me. Sorry guys, I have hardly been posting any messages or replying to your questions. I am very very busy at work & it leaves me too exhausted to type up anything here. Will catch up with you all at a later time. Biju, sorry for replying so late. The rods were at sun n sand sports at citi centre. I picked up one rod, 80gm cast weeight & they have one more rod of the same type. check with them. |

HI all i'm from jim from qatar n was readin the posts on this page. Hats off tou guys for creatin such a strong fishin community in UAE.I see u guysr fishin in the summer as well. Would be nice to read ur personal best fishing stories. This is how mine goes Me and my buddy ahmed left on a cold december friday morning at 420 from home we reached the fishing spot around 5..It was really windy n lookd like a rainy day.I was in half a mind to go back to themrs n the warm bed but ahmed said lets hangon so we got our rods fixed. Our gear setupconsists of 2 rods 15 pd line for catchin breams n snappers on which we have 3 hookd rigs n the bait we use is squid. On other 2 rods we have 30 pd line with full mackrels rigged on em. So i cast my mack rod the bait hits the water i stick the rod in the holder..... i go up to ahmed to get a cig ahmed sez look at the rod the drag is screamin i run to the rod pick it up n strike FISH ON !it runs for 100 yards n ahmed gets a hit! both of us r fightin some monsters im almost spooled so i tighten the drag to max n tuk the freakin line breaks..... Soon the same thing happens to ahmed we both reel our lines in i've got most of ma line back but ahmed has lost most of his so we'r down 1 rod. I rig up another mack' n this time keep the drag almost full it starts to rain real heavy. I cast the bait hits the water 30 secs later the line goes slack i grab the rod n all hell breaks loose the drag screams the rod bends im slippin its a monster it runs for a 100 yards n looks like im gettin spooled but suddenly the basterd stops im pumpin him hes around 20 yards away cant see him in the rain n he does it again. He runs for it im dead tired my backs killin me he takes another 40 yards n hes done for i bring him in its like pullin in a dead bison .Twas a 21 kg King fish. We packed up n headed home. One heck of a trip.... Will never forget it.... |

My brother was mor lucky to get 2 nice fish at Fishing village and that was all. I don't know what is going on!!! is it the heat or the new constructions going on everywhere in Dubai water!!!! I'm thinking of going outside town next week end, maybe to Fujairah or Abu Dhabi. If any one of you guys knows where to fish there or would like to join me, please let me know. I got a new reel that cost me 200 Dhs, Mitchill Avoct Big Surf 7000, what do you think of it guys? Please let me know as I'm using a Silver Solid Dominant Rod. Pranab, WHERE ARE YOU???? Hi All I think due to sever weather conditions and increasing temprature of water is the main cause of less fishing. After two regular visits on week end when water was normal and good moon conditions still not manage to taste a single strong bite. So no news from my side atleaset, i think its better to wait for change of weather conditions. Thanks Tayyab |

How are you‘ll? Sorry I did not mail these days. Infact I did not go for fishing, except fishing on our forum. Thanks Sayed, Zahed & Asmi – these days I only see you’ll on the forum. Keep it up. Sometimes even the experts need rest, and some from our forum are down with fever, so excuse them, they will spring back in action very soon……give them time. In fact we should be thankful to them for giving so much information’s. Anybody with valuable catch? (Please explain – with location, type of bait, time day etc) All the Best Ronald |

Hi Zahed, We went to Corniche Al-Qurm on Friday morning; were there from about 3:30 AM and remained till about 8:00 AM but did not get a single decent bite. We returned to the same spot around 4:30 PM and fished till after sunset getting only a half kilo Goldlined Seabream and a few smaller ones that were released. Hey, is it possible we were fishing side by side but of course there was no way we could have known each other. I say this because where we were fishing in the afternoon, a gentleman came along with his wife and started fishing besides us. If you were the one I think you were, then there was an old man fishing right underneath you, sitting near the water on the rocks; he had caught a wonderful two-bar bream and a good Naqroor. We did not fish on Saturday as I had a guest to take care of. Earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday we had been to the same place in the evenings, and my friend Shahzad caught a Naqroor of about a kilo each on both the days. That's about it. Hope the action would pick up in the current week. Thanks, Syed |

Hey guys, Ive been trying to differentiate between the: - Goldlined Seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba) which reaches a max length of 80 cm. - Haffara Seabream (Rhabdosargus haffara) which reaches a max length of 35 cm. From what I read, both look similar and are found in the UAE (also known as Gabit). Haffara; however, can be identified by a bump before the eye in the head profile. Unfortunately from the fish I caught and pics I saw, it seems impossible to identify and differentiate. Anyone!!! http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5472/photo0278kd1.jpg |

Dear Asmi, Welcome to the forum - I think I missed your first post. As you say, you have learnt your lesson so don't be disappointed. It's all about awareness. It had not occurred to you this could happen but now that it has, you will always be more aware and as a result the same thing should not happen again. This is the thing called 'Experience' and you are all the more experienced out of a little loss. As time passes by, you will learn many things through experiencing them. I smoke a lot and cannot dream of not smoking while fishing; however, if you want to give up smoking in its entirety, then that is the best for you. Another suggestion is you buy a rod holder or two depending on the number of rods you use and place the rods in them once you have cast your bait. Not only will this free your hands for anything else you might need to do, it is always a good practice; a hand held rod tends to shake a lot, making the fish wary and spooked. Cheers! |

Dear All, I would like to thank all of you for the information you are posting here as I have learned a lot. 6 weeks back I couldn't set my fishing kit all together as it was my first time going for fishing, I didn't even know how to cast, thanks to some fishermen were on Jumairah who taught me all the basics I could catch my first fish ever that night. I just want to say that with all the help provided here at this forum, I could develop my fishing skills but still I call myself a very beginner. Last week I had one funny experience that I would like to share with you all, it was something that taught me that I have to concentrate on what I'm doing while fishing as the result was so funny and disappointing the same time. I was at the fishing village side that night trying to catch something, while I was waiting for some bites I went for a smoke and was holding my rod with my right hand the very same hand I was holding my cigarette, I was trying to use my other hand to treat myself with some soft drink. after 20 or 30 minutes later I couldn't feel any bites so I decided to pull back my line and change the bait, and it was the very same moment when I realized that my line was gone along with the hooks, weight and baits attached. It was my cigarette; I cut the line with it and couldn't feel that till then. I was laughing loudly at myself and was so disappointed as that wasn't suppose to happen if I was a little more concentrated. Now I have learned my lesson not to smoke while fishing as I might get nothing. Once again, thank you all and best luck for this week end. |
