Hi all.

Ijlal: Nice catch. How have u been.
Pranab: Whats up. Why havent u been active like before.

Anyways Im back, missed fishing. Caught this during the weekend. Its not that special, but is my first Barracuda. A Pickhandle Barracuda.
Actually, I caught 2 and missed another 2. The one in the pic was caught with Sardine bait and my second with a Rapala.

http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=photo0188ld5.jpg

I also got a strong bite on another Sardine bait and lost the fish between the rocks, believe it was Grouper or Snapper.

See u soon.

Hey Shahzad,

Cool down yaar! I believe it is his first ever king, so let him be excited, and let him be the Scrooge himself. Who cares? Are we not catching good fish? I also believe he has never seen a 10 kg kingfish, but I can tell you from my experience, his fish is under 5kg. It is definitely smaller than the one you caught from Musaffah, and we did weigh that fish at 5kg.

I have been trying to be nice to him and did congratulate him on his recent catches but he never had the decency to say a single kind word when I posted mine. Why should you expect anything nice from a person who does not display any traits of being a gentleman, huh?

Cheer up pal, the weekend's coming up soon!

Guys,

Apologies for the delay in posting as I have been a tad busy

It seems that you all have different views on my pricing. I simply do a few charters to keep the boat running and do not treat it as a business. There were a few questions about yellowfin tuna. Thay have not started running yet (fujairah) but last year we started catching them around end november. However there have been a lot of Dorado and a couple of Sailfish caught aswell a 2 Marlin.
Hopefully I will have the boat at Fujairah marine centre next week.

The fishing off this coast (Ajman, Dubai etc) is pretty poor although there are a few kingfish around.

If anyone fancies a trip out then I'll do a trip for 400 per person max 2 people. Don't expect to be going out on a Hatteras!!

Hello Amir,

No, I never went to the "khadda" (continental shelf) back in Karachi as it was beyond my resources at that time, so never had a go at the billfish or big tunas. The fish I did catch on 20 lb line was a cobia weighing 123 lb and I had posted a link to the photo on this forum a few months ago.

Thanks,

Dear Owais,

I do pull peoples' legs sometimes for the sake of adding spice to the forum and I do fight back when somebody tries to be over-smart, but in reality I am a very humble person.

I hereby declare publicly this fish and any other fish I have caught in my life have all been gifts from God, and no achievement of mine. Ask people who have fished with me...

I appreciate your post but the fact remains I am not anybody's guru so please do not embarass me by saying so. The fact is I continue to learn everyday and still feel I know very little. I may have had more experience and based on that I shall continue to help you or anybody else on anything I know about but will never accept that title as it makes me feel an imposter.

hope you and all others understand what I mean.

Best regards,
Ijlal

Hi Ijlal,

My cousin Ali was telling me that you were one of the few persons in Pakistan who had caught a big marlin or tuna with a very light tackle in think a 20 lb line or something like that.

Can you share this story in details with us.

Rami,

I am not sure if this one touched 40, more likely nearer to 32-34. Since we had a long way to travel back to Abu Dhabi, and one of our team members had to go to Sharjah, we took all the fish to Dibba fish market and got it cleaned and cut. We did try to get it weighed but their scale was good for 10 kg only. when we put the fish on it, the pointer moved to 9kg again after completing its first round. It was getting late, otherwise we would have cut it into smaller pieces and weighed the individual pieces.

As for the fight, you know these fish are not the strongest of fighters but the first runs are blistering fast. I think I had it by the side of the boat, ready for gaffing within 2-3 minutes. I was using 20 lb tackle, and a 5-6 lb of drag is good enough to break the back of these fish on the initial run.

If you think this was a tournament winner, you should have seen the kingfish lying at the Mina that morning - Probably brought in by some commercial fisherman, man it would have tipped the scales past 80!

Thanks,
Ijlal

Hello Casper, Dave, Rami,

Thank you for your compliments.

Actually I did post a report on Sunday regarding my Dibba trip; apparently, nobody noticed, probably linked it to previous (last year's) pictures that were posted in response to Udupa. Kindly scroll down the page to my post of November 4 and you will get all the details.

Best luck to you all on the coming weekend!

by looking at the picture i can say it's in 40lb range if not evern more. this fish is a tournament winner for sure.

I must have caught the Daddy Mac of all Needlefish as my one was roughly 1m50cm in length. Caught on bright yellow rapala by the way.

Dave,

Think you mite be reffering to one of the larger species of needle fish (or gar fish?!)found here... check the link if its the same one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needlefish

ive seen them grow big to around 5 kg further offshore... theyre quiet aggressive and careful handling them coz they can swing round and give you a nasty bite!

haha looks like Rami has proved me wrong about the lure! do let me know if u get some good results with it please...

tim both the fish you caught are good fighters but as far as i know their not great eating fish... just my personal opinion though and im sure some of the guys mite disagree..?

Lads years ago I caught a fish in Bahrain which, to this day, am not sure what it's called!
It was about 1.5m long and very much looked like a barracuda. The difference is that it had 'needle-like beak' and not the usual barracuda thick-set lower jaw. It was a heck of a fighter though, and jumped up several times. Probably the most beautiful fish I ever caught, and I almost felt guilty afterwards.
Any of you know what I'm talking about?
D.

Hello Tim,

The second picture is one of the sting/whip rays; however from the picture you have posted, it is difficult to identify the exact specie but be careful when handling these fish. The spike on the tail is poisonous; a sting is very painful at best and fatal at worst. Remember Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter?"

The first fish as pointed out by Bart is the common sea cat we get over here though I am not sure about the exact name.

Just my two cents..

Hi Rami,

Yes, that's exactly it (Williamson not Wilkinson). I really look forward to testing it now that you say it's effective for Kings. Any other tips related to that are, of course, welcome.
Cheers mate.

Dave,

Yep, all of the fish listed are top quality table fare. Just finished having a mixed plate of fried kingfish, grouper, grunt and goatfish, yummy!

Cheers,

Dave,
That lure is a trolling ribbon fish made by williamson. it's very effective for kings.
While fishing for smoker kings, it's alway better to use live bait. and the best is a live ribbon fish using wire and tribble hooks. If ribbon are not available, Then I'll try the lure. But the action on the live one is much much better. During tournament season, the price of live ribbbon fish sky rockects by live fish dealer selling to tournament anglers.

Good Luck

Ijlal,
I might be visiting Abu Dhabi in 3 weeks or so. I'd like to go fishing with you.

Tim ,

The silver fish was a catfish! duno the exact species name but i bet sum1 will let you know. In my opinion one of the hardest fighters in the sea! Ive seen them get well over the 5kg mark and im pretty sure they get bigger. Abundant in the local waters ... careful for their spikes though. One on either side and one on top ... they can be nasty!

Shahzad and I went out of Dibba alongwith a couple of friends yesterday. The sea was choppy with intermittent light rain and there was little surface action in the morning apart from a sporadic burst of small tuna breaking the surface. We, therefore, resorted to drift fishing and caught four Groupers (Hamour) two weighing 2 kg plus each and two about 1 kg each, one Silver Grunt (Naqroor/Nagroor) of 3 kg, one flounder and many goatfish (Sultan Ibrahim.) Later in the afternoon, aound 3:45 – 4:00 PM greater bait activity was observed and a kingfish weighing around 13 - 15 kg struck my Rapala CD-14 (RH), which was brought to gaff within 2-3 minutes. All in all it was a good days fishing considering the conditions were far from ideal with the prevailing low pressure and all.

Will post pictures soon.

Thanks,
Ijlal

Udupa,

Everybody has seen a barracuda or a grouper; what makes it interesting is the angler holding it, which also provides some perspective to estimate the size of the fish. Now I don't know why people shy away of showing themselves to other members on this forum. I am member of many forums and everywhere people are proud of showing themselves off along with their catch.

Here's what I mean:

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z156/Ijlal2/6122301-PB.jpg

or this one,

and this too...

Hope you understand what I mean...

Cheers,

Hi Ijlal,

No it's a 'ribbon fish' and I think it's made by 'Wilkinson' or some such name. I haven't got it with me but I'll double check tonight. Either way it looks pretty convincing! We'll have to see though.

Hey Bart,
Yes I know what you mean about it being 'soft rubber' but it looks pretty darn solid - as you say, we'll have to see what happens.
Barracuda was about 5lbs so no monster I'm afraid.

Are you referring to the Mann's Stretch 30+ Sea Snake?

Haven't used it but should be able to induce a strike - Just as any other properly made lure would.

Hey Dave,

Yeh I know the lures you mean. Havent tried them myself as they seemed rather big and sumhow just didnt seem like they would work to well... but I may be wrong so let us know how it goes! Another thing that comes to mind is that thier soft (rubber?) right? A king or cuda will destroy them after one strike and if i remember they werent cheap... however mite be wrong again haha so try them out and let us know how it goes....

Cheers, Bart

Hi All- Question!
I bought 2 rather special looking lures yesterday. Basically they are long, plastic-made 'ribbon fish' with obviously a number of hooks attached along the body. They look a bit like long eels, but these are made of soft plastic and blue and white, about 45cm in length. The idea is to troll them at medium speed (say 4knots) and they are supposed to dive deep and swim in a snake-like fashion.
The manufacturer really recommends them for barracuda, YFT and others. It's made in the USA.

Has any of you used this sort of lure in the past and is it any good? Personally I can't wait to try it!

Hey All,
Went out with the boat on Friday afternoon for a spot of trolling. Grey skies and fairly choppy seas meant we were in for a bit of hard work. Managed to bag a barracuda which I guess wasn't bad considering the conditions. Caught on Rapala Magnum (blue & silver) 2 miles out of Mina Zayed.
I have to say I didn't take a camera with me, but I'm sure you'll take my word for it.

hey guys. i went to kalba today morning at about 3am and fished at the mangroves over there. its really a very beautiful place to camp. on one side yo8 have the beach which is very neat and clean and looks almost untouched by man. the sea is very clam mostly but i still dont recommend to swim there. how ever its an excellent place to fish. on the other side there is a river that runs from the sea into the lagoon. its truely a spectacular place to be. if you are interested in visiting that place do call me for directions. 050-5397283. oh by the way the distance between the river(mangroves) and the sea is roughly 200m how ever due to sandy terrain the walk is a bit tedious. you have proper roads in between the sea and the lagoon to travel as its a 2way lane.trust me its a really cool spot. and oh yes about the fish i didnt catch much my self but there were others there catching baracudda and good size sherris...

nice fish, but i have a few questions...
where did you catch it?
when did you catch it?
how did you catch it?
what rod is it?
what reel is it?
nice catch bro. i would say it was caught in deeper water, because the swim bladder expanded, but judging by the pic it was from land somewhere...
was it caught on bait or lure?
i recently caught three in abu dhabi with a rapala taildancer HT color from the corniche, but they were only baby hamour.

tight lines
