Spark plugs do snag more so you lose more but do have an advantage too. Tie them to the outer contact using a small loop in the line or use a small snap, and lightly hammer the contact to close the gap. If the plug snags, a little extra pressure would reopen the gap and your line would become free of the sinker - especially useful if you have a fish on. I personally never use spark plugs but this is one positive side to using them as sinkers. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi Charley, good for you. But not everyone can afford to hire a charter. some of us might have the resources to do that, while others would find it a waste of money. I'm really surprised that you caught emperor Snappers here in the UAE. I didnt even know that they were around. I hope you released it as they are more like aquarium fish.....Or was it Spangled emperor (sherri) ??? Why dont you post some pics of your trip instead of just sending us the link to the charter service ? Desmond.....spark plugs are ok....I have seen quite a few people use them, but I wouldnt recommend them, as they are more likely to get caught in the rocks. Using a sinker with a roundish appearance is less likely to get caught in the rocks. The number of hooks & the shape of the hooks also makes a difference to the number of times you get snagged in the rocks. Practise well & learn well.....fishing is 5% art, 5% common sense & 90% luck......its upto you to try & make the most out of any given situation. |

Hi Dezz try using a pulley rig system with a rotten bottom, as the fish takes the bait it will pull the sinker with it, if the lead is stuck it should snap at the rotten line link. Use nuts and sparkies as weights and light line (10lbs) for weight leader. Hope this helps???? |

Hey Ijal, Thanks a ton sir. I got some sparkplugs which i think i can use as sinkers. Is that ok? I tried both squid as well as sardine but i did not use the whole of sardine i cut them to two and used two hooks on one line. by the way what number hook should i be using if i were to use bait like sardine or shrimps fishing hamour or queen fish etc? |

Hello Desmond, As King put it everybody will lose tackle to the rocks. A newbie would lose more, but take courage from a baby's initiative of learning to walk. Sooner or later, you would get the hang of it. 'The feel' comes with experience but this is one thing you cannot buy at a market, however you can spend a few extra Dirhams on sinkers and hooks. Perseverence is the key, so keep at it! As for bait, squid works fine with both groupers and queenfish, and so do shrimps and sardines; however, nothing beats a fresh, whole sardine for hamour. Have a great day! Ijlal |

Hey ya Fishing King, Thanks for that piece of advice. I was using the "drop" like sinker. Have been to this location (Looks like a perfect fishing spot with structures like harbour which is close to Ajman Kempenski.)Like you said I later tried giving a yank and reeling at a speed where it was suspended from rocks adn had no probs but once i cast there were more chances of it getting stuck. But I believe expereince is what matters here as I saw others were also fishing and I was the one having more difficulties retrieving the terminal tackle. Well what more can me expected from a rookie like me By the way what bait do you need to use for hamour and queens? I was using squid as bait. Any suggestions on the bait as well as the locations is highly appreciated. DeZZ |

Hey Desmond, everyone fishing near rocks will loose their sinkers & hooks from time to time. The trick is in reducing the times you lose your terminal tackle. You will have to change your style based on the approximate shape of the rock formations. the rocks could be V-shaped, sharped edged or just round. Different shapes of sinkers, different height & position of tying the sinkers & hooks does help a bit. The most important thing is how you retreive your line. Most people lose their terminal tackle as they reel in without giving the initial yank which is required to lift the sinker off the bottom. Bottom fishing, mid water level fishing & float fishing is for different species. Eg: Queens are mid water to top water feeders, hamour are bottom to mid water level feeders. so just changing from bottom to float fishing will not solve your problem. However, since there are more than a few maestros here I'm sure that like always, others will profess to better solutions. |

hi udupa, good catch, and your comment about the mullet on the cornice. even i have seen many times on the other side, that fishes are jump not in panic.they jump in one line and looks to me that they were playing.and one times i have seen around 20-25 numbers at night and they are huge around 2-3kg one piece.but they are not interested in any bait.i think mullets are tough competitors on the bait. regards.......shaz |

Udupa, I have seen this spectacle, probably a hundred times at the Corniche. Stopped for a while this evening also and saw it again, but I think they are small queenies and not mullet. I cannot be sure and may be wrong, but the ones I saw today were certainly queenfish. I am as much at a loss as you are what might be chasing them. Is it possible there are giant grouper over there??? Take care, Ijlal |

Hi Ijal, Well returning empty handed does not mean you have failed, its just that you are getting better by adding it to your experience and who says that you have to have a catch everytime you fish. In fact I will teach my kids to fish as it teachs you about patience (Eh and my wife as well as she requires it more that anyone ;) I have been fishing in my home town way back in maharashtra, India and many a time have returned empty handed but I have learnt a lot and infact learning more thru these forums. With regards to the license, you can apply for it online on the dubai gov web site and its not a big deal as you have to upload a few copies and you are done and they will contact you once it is ready. I can send you the link to do so if you wish. With regards to you being so active, let me tell you something if there are pros and not replying to the forum then take it this way, its just that they dont have enough time to reply or suggest tips to rookies (like me), but I find there is a lot of activity on this forum and you being the most active one, thanks for everything sir. People who nag about their skills or rather believe in pointing a finger at others simply have developed a feminine behavior and often forget that this is a fishing forum. They say when a Elephant walks a lot many canines bark but it does not matter the elephant, so be it that way, let the dogs bark and you know what you should be doing, "JUS KEEP UP DA GOOD WORK". If the elephant had to run after the dogs he would make a fool of himself. No now you know what you should be doing next. "If we knew where the fish were, there would be no fun in fishing. Might as well called it Phishing". Adios Amigo - DeZZ About |

Des and Tim, Thank you for your kind remarks but be advised I have been branded a 'sucker', a 'know-it-all' and a 'moron' many times on this forum. Really, I have a lot to learn, but you may be right about the fishaholic stuff; I really love fishing and everything related to it. This is the reason you find me more active on the forum than most members and ready to help anybody on anything I have learnt along the way. There are many other anglers on the forum who probably know more, but I just hope they throw away their miserly attitudes and come forward to share their knowledge and experiences with all of us, participate in debates and not shy away from being opposed. Fishing is lesser of a science and more an art form; there are no universal truths here. Fish are as unpredictable in behaviour as are we. I may have a different opinion on the choice of bait than you do. I may learn something from you just as you would from me. Just my two cents in trying to make the forum a more interesting place to be a member of. Thanks once again. Ijlal |

Hi Desmond, The type of leader one should use depends upon the tackle one is using and species of fish targeted. I do not go higher than 40 lb leader on 20 lb line on my surf rods - Used as shock leader, this ensures the main line does not break due to the initial shock of casting heavier weights and the inertia of the stationary line. On one of my trolling rods on which I am using 40 lb line, I dont use a leader at all. Of course, if I was going after big game that would be a different proposition altogether. When rigging a sardine, I normally add a short wire trace to ensure the line does not get cut off by toothy creatures such as barracuda and kingfish. Hope this helps... Thanks, Ijlal |

Welcome aboard Folker! Squid is a very good bait but not the best one. Some of the fish found here, especially of the bream family will very seldom bite on squid, if ever. The bait that any fish would eat is shrimps; however, the drawback here is all the small fish will finish it off before a bigger fish gets an opportunity to take it most of the time. Also, due to smaller size, many big fish may not be interested in the first place. Another excellent bait, especially when fishing for larger species is sardine, locally known as 'ooma' but the choice of bait would depend on the species you are targeting. As for the line selection, check the rating of your rod and use accordingly. On a rod rated for 10-20 lb, I would go for 14-16 lb line. Just my two cents... Cheers, Ijlal |

Hi guys! Another newbie... I used to go fishing back home with my dad, but things are most likely a bit different around here. I had planned to go fishing next weekend, as I have a nice and pleasant 3 days off. I went to Carrefour to get a rod and as usual, I do things without thinking it through in advance. - I had no clue what rod to get (got a Mitchell T350 in the end, no clue if it's good) - Same for the hooks, lead, floater etc. - No clue what bait to use. I've seen some guys fishing on a pier-like thing in ajman, close to the Baywatch Club, so I planned to go there. I've understood from this forum that the best bait is squid? What line do I use? Is a 4/100 ok? And what fish to expect, if any of course... |

Gautham, Welcome to the forum! Try whole or cut sardines (Ooma) and Indian scads (Seema), and squid (Nagar/Habbar) for grouper. Ijlal |

Sorry Sonny (Udupa), I wouldn't have said what I did had I known you were not an old miser as your profile seemed to suggest. There really are no hard feelings, never were... but why did you not introduce yourself then??? Seeing you two boys with Rapalas, I thought maybe you two were Jeen's sons (remember Jeen's post about groupers his sons had caught at the Corniche?) Your Cardinal reel should have given you away had you been alone but seeing two boys of similar age with almost identical tackle gave me the impression of two brothers fishing together and I was going to ask you but you disappeared. Anyhow, I may not be able to recognize you so next time we meet, do let yourself be known! Nice picture of mangrove jack you have posted - Keep up the good work! I did try a few times near the sewer outlets, and when water did start flowing out from the second one from where you were and generated a decent current, a pair of MJ's did follow my Rapala many times but did not take it. As I was tired from a night-long (and fishless ) vigil at Mina, I did not stay very long either. Here's a an MJ I caught last week while on my way home from office. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z156/Ijlal2/Image122.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z156/Ijlal2/Image120.jpg Take care, Ijlal |

Hi Guys, I am a bit of a newbie to fishing. Don't know too much but have been fishing a few times. I want to make this more regular. I don't have a boat so shore fishing it is. A couple of questions: Is the Ajman Port area (near hamriya free zone) any good for fishing. What bait would you recommend for grouper? How should it be cut (I have heard squid is good but do I put the full squid on the hook or just tiny piece.) Any information would be really appreciated. Secondly, I would love to join an experienced shore fisherman next weekend. Cheers, zetaxi165 |

Hello Dave, Masaood Marine only has a very limited inventory and their prices are quite high; however, they are offering 15% discount so you may find a good deal. Ijlal |

Guys, there is a place called Knotika marine mall near junction 3 of the sheikh zayed road. A little pricey but they sell williamson lures etc. Had a good thursday in Khorfakkan, lots of Dorado, small tuna. Unfortunately the boat broke down but it didn't spoil the day. |

another goodish tackle shop is Picnico. I think its at the Epco petrol station on Beach road. Theres also a kite sailing and surf shop attached to it. Mainly does good camping gear and resonable fishing tackle. Worth a look!!! |

The Al Hamour Marine shop mentioned has a good selection of terminal tackle and lures, not much else, usual rods and reels from Penn, Daiwa. Think they can arrange boat trips from there???? not sure though.!!! |

Hi All, Sorry I haven't posted in a while - been very busy business-wise. Anyway managed to get a bit of free time on Friday and headed out to Abu Dhabi. Mostly we did some water-skiing, but decided to head out for a spot of trolling in the last hour of the day. We caught a 23lb Hammour after about 15 mins trolling off of 'Bahrami' or 'Baharini' (Someone please correct me) Island. Caught on blue/silver rapala, Daiwa trolling rod and Mitchell reel. Lovely fish, yielded a lot of good stuff for many dinners to come! I don't have a picture but I did take a crap one with my blackberry - I'm happy to email to anyone who wants to see it. All the best Dave |

As mentioned by Joerg, there are about three to four tackle shops in Diera. You can take Baniyas street and keep going straight passing the Sabkha Abra station after which you would come to a Public Library. All the shops are behind the Library. |
