yup operator in dibba..same guy who took mr.ijlal out some time back.dont really kno the details....some excellent fishing in dibba...i'm the one with the kingie n the gt is on my brother....dad and brother on a trip rite now in the maldives...will post pics when they're back..

Cheers for your comments, I will try them out next time I'm on the water unfortunately have a bit of engine trouble at the moment so (knowing Dubai and warranty work) it could be a few weeks ..... arrggghhh
Don't suppose you or any of the other guys know where I can get a good set of outriggers do you. I have tried the Chandlers at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club but they are just a rip off as there prices are more than double that from what you can buy online.

Some great catches there Udupa and Joerg, nice one! And good to see a decent fish caught in Dubai for a change! Udupa - obviously you were out in a boat..was it with an operator based in Dibba, and if so, who?!!
Ian, re: your qs, there are a lot more experienced boat handlers than me who fish these waters,who hopefully will come on and post but in brief - @ 6 knots is fine for trolling here, and is the speed the operators I know generally troll at; re: jigging, I would get your bait/lure down to the bottom, then pull it up a metre or so and jig it in the bottom couple of metres. If near a structure you could jig it at all levels in the water column and try to 'find' the fish. Use a jigging lure, or if you want to jig bait, a sardine/mackerel/half mackerel seems to be what others use...a friend had a very nice queen the other day jigging a half mackerel here in Dubai. Those 'hamoor' feather rigs...yes, I know what you mean, I've seen them too, I see no reason for them not to be effective. Having mono traces might be a problem if you get toothy chaps such as barracuda/kings having a chew on them though. Re: lines crossing when trolling, never turn the boat more than 90 degrees...allow the lines to straighten before turning again. So if doing a U-turn, turn 90, straighten lines, turn 90 again. Hopefully someone will come and help with your downrigger issues. If you have one, then I'd definitely use it. I don't have one, I've had days on firends' boats when several lines trolling lures 'normally' get nothing or just small barracuda, whereas the downrigger gets some really nice fish.

You get to here and you will see the breakwater :-)
And as for the shop? I am sure it is again Marine & Agriculture Supplies and if you go towards the corniche from Al Mulla Interchange it is in the first couple of buildings on the left it is quite a large shop on the corner and again has Mercury Outboards in the window. Hope that helps if I can find the phone number I will post it here ok.

Hi Collin,
Don't know of any good shore fishing spots in UAQ (mind you don't know any good ones at sea either ... lol).
But when I go in and out of the creek there are always a lot of people fishing the breakwaters? Always seems to be a good spot. The only place I could think of which might be quiet is the breakwater at the end of the Hamriya Village? The best way to get there is to go on the beach road to UAQ / RAK and after the Hamriya Port you will see a big inland creek which is primarily used for water sports. Turn into Hamriya village after the creek and drive until you hit the beach then follow the beach along (to your left) until you come to the breakwater!! Have seen some good hamour of there when snorkelling a few times???
Try using the black sea urchins as bait, but be careful when opening them up as those spines are really sharp. The fish seem to like them when you break them getting in and out of the water so must be good bait on the hook also???
Oh yeah Hamirya is a fishing village so you will see all the pots and nets on the beach and watch of for the goats there are hundreds of them roaming free around the village so go slow ok.
If at first you don't succeed ...... go fishing!!!

I did not buy the combo. I bought a Mitchell blue 6000 reel and a Mitchell AmiBlack 240 rod. Hope I don't have issues with the reel. Best I take my fly rod with as well just in case ;)

Hi Collin,
A few places to get tackle from in Dubai are:
Picnico, which is on the beach road next door to Al Boom Marine in the emirates petrol station. They are very helpful and as a lot of local fisherman go in there they know what lures etc are catching?
Also there is Marine & Agriculture Supplies at the end of the gold souk in deira near the Hyatt. The best way to get there is to park your car in the Fish market car park cross the foot bridge to the gold souk, carry on walking past the souk on your left and after the bus station and car park the road turns to your right to go back towards the hyatt the shop on the left at that bend is the one you want. They sell rods, reels, line, weights well everything basically. They are also the agents for Mercury outboards so you will see all the engines in the window. They also have a shop by the Al Mulla plaza r/about but it too hard to explain how to get to :-).
Knotika Marine Mall at junction 3 also have some tackle but its a bit more expensive than the other places, and they only really stock lures and lines not everything else.
I also noticed you bought the mitchell rod and reel set from carrefour, just a word of warning the reel is very prone to line tangles.

Hi guys,
First of all Eid Mubarak, Merry Christmas etc to everybody :-)
And second thanks for all your info :-) its all very helpful. We went out to Jebel Ali shipping lane today and had a couple of hits on small blue rapala but came back blank, mind you the waters were quite rough. We also seemed to be the only ones out there.
So a few more questions?
1. What is the ideal trolling speed? I have been told around the 5.5 to 6.5 knots? Maybe its our speed where the problem is?
2. If Jigging is it best right of the bottom or a meter or so off?
3. When jigging is it best to use whole squid, shrimp, sardine etc or just cut pieces up?
4. Are these Hamour jigs I see in fishing shops, carrefour etc really any good?
5. I have a dowrigger installed but have a real problem keeping the line on whilst getting it too depth? I have heard it might be an idea to use a rubber band but how do you tie it?
6. (Last one I promise) When trolling all my lures seem to want to come in too the centre line of the boat? I have all lines at different lenghts from the boat but still seem to get big tangles???

Hi All,
Just found this forum and think there are some great contributors here. I have spent many years fresh water fishing in South Africa and a bit of Salt Water fishing as well. Spent the last few years in Dubai with no life other than work so have decided that next year I want to hear a reel screaming again. I am based in Dubai but see a license is required to shore fish here. Any tips of places to go outside of Dubai where I do not need a license would be appreciated. I bought a Mitchell Rod and Reel from Carrefour but need sinkers etc as well. Can someone please tell me where I can buy tackle and bait.

I agree with you richie on the rapala size . Thats the reason i posted few days back about rapala compatibility and their size . No one came back with any answer . It shows no one here is using that much rapala or lure . I see most of the people going for bottom fishing who are success ful with the catch . And the pics that i have seen with a lure catch most of the time except barracuda its the small lures that are effective . As you rightly said the size of the lure must match the colour and size of the bait fish . And here the bait fish are small compared to other parts of the world . half beak and sardines are both smaller size fish which moves in groups attacked by larger pedators . Thats the reason i wrote when ever i caught a fish on lure its clour have been either light blue or silver in colour . Because silver for sardine and light blue for halfbeak .
We must all use our experience and find out compatibiity of lures to diff kind of species which are avail able here . May be now as you got your own boat you can see with trial error basis what works better here . Most of the time people are hiring boats frm locals who only know handline and bottom fishing . And more important people who go out paying dont want to experiment as they settle for what the boat man wants and just are satisfied with a good catch . Dosent matter if its lure catch or bait catch .

Hello Ian,
I agree with Richie on lure selection. Yet another point to consider is when you see bait, it indicates surface activity. When you are trolling deep-diving lures, you are missing fish that may be just under the bait. In such a situation, try trolling floating Rapalas (with plastic bib)and keep a few different sizes handy; as Rich says, match the size with the bait. As you have your own boat, you may as well install downriggers and try fishing as close to bottom as possible to get a hamour (grouper) or two. Try fishing over the 'edges' where shallower water suddenly gives way to deeper water, and wherever possible try trolling with the current.
Fishing is all about improvising and adapting as per available opportunity. Long time back home, I and a friend had once gone fishless from early morning and it was almost evening. It was winter and back there the fish usually keep low when water cools down. The deepest trolling lures available to us in those days were the Rapala Count-Downs. Even though we had trolled CD18's in relatively shallow water, but with no results. I then thought and took out all the ball sinkers I had, beaded them onto a foot or so of wire line, and made a make-shift trolling weight quite heavy; used this in between my fishing line and wire trace and was immediately rewarded with a 7 kg grouper on the same CD18 Rapala I had trolled all day long.
The problem here in the UAE is natural underwater structure such as reefs and rocks is almost non-existent. Do mark any structure you find on your GPS for future use, and concentrate on trolling over those spots. I am sure with time, as you gain more experience about your area, you will start catching more fish.

Another point Ian - if, as you mention, you find bait fish schools near the surface and predatory fish hitting them....see what the baitfish are, and try to match the baitfish with your lure. Often these baitfish are small (from my observations here), and fishing a large lure gets you nowhere. The predators seem focused on one type of food, and if your lure doen't match, it will be ignored. I've found a yozuri sardine or a sabiki rig often the perfect match (though a multi hook sabiki rig will be problematic with a few decent sized fish on!!)

I have recently bought into a part share in a boat in RAK, and we have had similar results to you - ie very disappointing, just small barracuda. The key is - IMHO - local knowledge, but this is hard to get as there is no real 'sport' fishing scene in RAK or UAQ, it's all commercial fishing with nets or fish traps. As Pranab notes, checking out wreck GPS positions is sound advice, structure (rock/reef/wreck) = fish.
We have only taken our boat out a few times in RAK and trolled inshore - until recently, quite good catches of barracuda and kingfish etc were possible by those who regularly trolled inshore around the breakwaters etc, but recent development and construction has really hit fishing in the area....like Dubai. So we will get out the GPS and head for a wreck next time and jig/troll over that. If you find anywhere good, give us a shout...as we will do!! |

By the way i fogot the area near the tourist motel by the beach is a good spot and also off the port side . You can try those places .
For tuna in this region use reesh and for queens you can use sabiki as well as spoons . But bigger ones can be hooked up by rapala . For bait shrimp and squid are best in this areas .

Dear Ian ,
The varities that you can expect in uaq are as follows . Kings, queens,sherri , sea bream , cobia, jesh , . For big kings use yuzuri dive boards and troll the bottom . For smaller size kings best is laslas ( half beak ) hook the tail and reel them in . besides that there are a local hooks for kings known as rish . If you go to a normal tackle shop and ask for these hooks they will give u and charge you 15 dirhams . Blue and silver yzuri rapala are also good for small kings in the surface level .
There is a book by the name UNDER WATER UAE is basically a diving book frm EXPLORER publications and avail able in all petrol pumps . You can get hold of it as it gives locations of major ship wreck in this region . Can then venture out for these areas . I dont go out much at sea as i cant affor it every time . So this is the best i can offer you .
Me and chua went out today at sharjah and got a few sea bream , few coral fish and sheris . will post the pics later tomorrow .
By the way can i join you if u are going in between the holidays for fishing .

Hi All,
I have recently bought my own boat and have it berthed in Umm Al Quwain. We have been out every friday for the last 4 weeks and all we seem to catch are barracuda? Although catching anything is good we want to catch other species especially kings, queens & tuna. Can anybody give us tips on places to fish in UAQ???? We have been as far as 9 miles offshore to no avail? We have followed the the birds feeding on the smaller prey fish etc etc but nothing ..... please help???

Wow thanks for taking the time and effort for that post. really explained alot and was very helpful. i agree with the stuff you said aswell! I think i need to sort out permission to fish the omani side of Dibba. Do you have any idea about how to do this?
Untill then im stuck in fujeirah. Gues ill stick to the anchorage and surrounding areas for now! The deep water is sumthing new, as the Dubai side is shallow so it will def take some time to get used to!

This is the best post that you have yet made to this forum . I totally agree with your obsevations . Only i like to add that when me and chua went once for the same area we did discuss because of the huge depths in the area metal jigging can be a very good option on bread . Once again thnks for this wonderful post and for the nice observation . i spoke with locals they also told me bottom fishing is best in the area but for jesh GT its best to use poppers near the huge drop offs . And the point to get GT is after ras sakran across the caves some place near the lima stone . They say if you are lucky you hook up GT weighing 25 kgs + upward .

I am sorry for a late response but your question required more deliberation than normal posts and I have been a little short on time.
I have gone out of the East Coast but barely three times, so I think a person like Dave will be in a much better position to tip you off in the right direction. In addition, all the times I have been out of Omani side of Dibba so if you intend taking your boat, you may not be able to take advantage of the Musandam waters as these lie within Omani territory. If, however, you are able to arrange authorization to fish there or are willing to hire a boat, following are some observations I have made:
The sea is quite deep, very close to the shore; just half a kilometer or less out from the cliffs, the depth seems to be around 50 meters. I cannot be sure as I have not had access to a fish finder, but the line goes down and down a long way before touching bottom when bait fishing or jigging. This probably is the main reason why we have not been very successful trolling the area. I have tried lures that dive to more than 30 feet deep but with no success. Recently I bought some that would dive to 50 feet on 30 lb mono (possibly more on braid) but have not had the opportunity to try them out yet. I feel if you are on a boat with a fish finder and downriggers, you could have great success in the form of grouper, kingfish, barracuda and probably giant trevallies.
Bottom fishing is excellent, especially in the deeper water, and you can expect to haul in some real monsters. Sardine (Ooma) and Indian shads (Seema) rigged cut or whole as bait is the order of the day here, though squid works great too. On my last trip, I lost a few fish that were able to load my 20-50 lb Penn Powerstick completely. These fish were probably not hooked properly due to the depth and the stretch in mono that comes into play under such conditions. On one occasion the same day, while reeling up my hook to check if the bait was still on and when the bait was about 20 feet below surface, I got shocked as I saw a big shark, about five feet long come up towards my bait. I stopped reeling, and the fish froze just near the sardine. It stood there a few seconds, then lunged, took the bait and wheeled off towards the bottom at an angle! For a few tense seconds, my rod bent and my reel screamed, and then everything went silent; the fish had spit the hook out!
The currents are usually strong, and on a drift, you require heavy weights. Even a 12 oz weight seems to lift off the bottom. Braided line should reduce the need for very heavy sinkers and improve your hooking ratio.
Small longtail tuna and kawa kawa seem to be resident in the area, as we found them breaking the surface whenever we went. These fish do not seem interested even in the smallest of Rapalas, spoons and other tins. The only lure we have been able to catch these on is a small feather jig you can buy at the port shops there. Of course, there is a lot that can be tried, of which chunking should produce results.
You can also try popping for GT’s near the cliffs if you are up to it, or butterfly-jig if you are adequately equipped - There is a lot to be explored in this anglers’ paradise.
This is about what I can advise you; however, as I said in the beginning, it applies to the Omani waters off Dibba and may not apply completely to the fishing off Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, of which, I have no experience. Hop it is some help, though.

Ciguatera Poisoning does occur by eating not only infected barracuda but also a lot of other species such as grouper (the famous hamour), trevallies, snappers and even kingfish! Ciguatera has been attributed to occur in fish in areas where there are dying coral reefs. Smaller fish in those areas eat the dead coral containing the Ciguatoxin, and are in turn eaten by larger predators mentioned above. These predators over time accumulate the toxin in their flesh and may cause severe symptoms in humans when affected fish is consumed. Even in such potentially dangerous areas, you are more likely to get the desease after eating larger specimens of the fish prone to carry the toxin, as these big fish have accumulated higher levels over the years. The phenomena is mostly reported in and around the Carribean, and in Australia.
Here in and around UAE, there are very few coral reefs, if any, so there seems to be no risk of getting this desease. Even back home, where pollution levels are usually greater than over here, and coral reefs are more abundant, I have heard of no such incident where a person got ill by eating barracudas.
I personally do not savour the cuda very much but do eat if I catch any. Honestly, the flesh is quite good when fresh, but I have over the years become more selective after catching and tasting so many wonderful species.

Well my fishing knowledge goes back only a year My dubai lisence was issued 7/3/2007 . And i started fishing few months back than that may be 3 months back .
Yes i did a lot of reading over the net about cudas . All i have come to know they are posinious in the us and american coasts as there are mercury deposits in those oceans . And as cudas love shiney objects they gulp these mercury over there . And there have been also some reports of death for eathing them its true .
But this part of the world there are no such mercury deposits in the ocean . Hence i dont think that they are poisinous . If they were GURUJI who has been eating them for the last 25 years would not have survived . I think he is now 52 + and still going strong hunting cudas and eating them day in and out .
Yes i dont eat them so much but at times i have taken a few for the table . I used to eat them more before kit one of the forum member who dont write here now taught me to be a better fisher man we should start releasing the catch .
And i am ever grateful to him for educating me in this area . Because there have been a day when some of our forum members hooked up around 24/26 cudas in 45 mins around jumeriah beach . And there was a huge uproad in the forum regarding this picture , rightly so .
But after kit took special interset to make me understand the joy of releasing the catch i hv tried to practice accordingly .
I dont say i release every thing that i catch . I do still take a few for the table when i feel like .

You can eat just about the same amount of barracuda as you eat hamour.
Both fish are scavengers & eat anything & almost everything. It is not so much about the poisioning, but its the levels of toxins created by/in these fish that are harmful to man to eat.
Large amounts of anything is not good for man as he must have a balanced diet .....hahahaha !
Eat too much sugar = diabetes
too much salt = puke
too much apricots/prunes = run to the loo (laxative)
too much water = low body salt
too much fishing = jobless
too much work & no play = makes jack a dull boy |

These i caught frm land and they are smaller for sure but if u go to sea u get bigger ones 14/18 kgs but unfortunately i donthv a regular access to boat . This is the best i can do from land .

Nothing to laugh about pal! My own first experience with fishing when I was 7 or 8 years old was a flexible stick from a tree, to which was tied some twine, a reed foat and a very small hook with earthworm as bait on which were caught many minnows. That setup would not have handled a half kilo fish, but tell you what, it was good enough to hook me up for life!

Once i caught one around 10kgs from sharjah corniche four months back really gave tough time to gave up......yes they dont stop if hooked for quite a long and try to stick there body with the bottom of sea which makes it more harder to pull them out.....

You are right, stingrays do pull hard. One took more than 100 m of line out of my reel even though my drag was spot on. Managed to bring it to the beach and it was huge. Didn't use gaff on it as I did not want to kill it so broke the line and let it go. Must have been around 15 kg.
Once a manta ray took my trolled lure and took lots of line out. It jumped out of water at least 10 times (didn't count though), and did somersaults on each jump. Weighed in at 17 kg and won me a prize in the 'special catch' category - Caught it during a tounament.

Hey boys, this is not my ad. I think that this is something to laugh but as I was a kid I fished with some stiks like that or just with hand or bamboo. Result: Some nice trouts and a good feeling for fishing.
For that ad a lot of work to buy a shark on the fish market and only use him to sell a pice of sh.. :} haha.
I figure out that we got amazing stingrays here around. What are youre expirience on that fishs here?
I can tell you they bite and run away like a train, don t stop for minutes....... |

A few comments about the auction (hope it is not yours!) 
1. The rod-reel combo being sold is no more than a toy worth 20-30 AED.
2. The shark has not been caught on this combo - I would go as far as to say it is not even the seller's picture but has been taken off the Net.
Of course, these are my thoughts only and everybody is free to believe what he feels like.
