hey guys... how are you all... havent been at this forum for a very long time .... i got my self an intex excursion 5 and also a challeger 3
they really are good inflatable boats... nice and sturdy... did take them to fujairah and had a blast... well if u guys wanna get a low budget boat for fishing, you could buy it off from dragon mart. they cost excursion 5: dhs.500 and challenger 3: dhs. 180. just bargain with the sales guy over there and they will reduce it .... both these boats come will all the accessories; oars, pump, cushions, and rope. they are also repairable if any damages occur. the shops number at dragon mart is BAL 03-10 and its called Mobile Man Trading.

Syed Ijlal,

Fishing is quite a craze now in Brunei. Almost everyone is doing it during their spare time. Fishing is quite terrific overthere with lots of strong fighting fishes which will put all your gears and strengths to the test e.g Amberjacks, GTs, King Fish, Golden Trevallys, Samsons,Yellow Fin Tunas, Ruby Snappers, Red Snappers etc.

Offshore fishing charters are also much cheaper (than here). Didn't do any fishing due was on a very short trip (only 02days) to attend a meeting additionally the weather is not that favourable nowadays. Only managed to go to the tackle shops there to check out and pick up few stuffs for myself and for Pranab.

Phewwwww! Almost picked up either a Daiwa Saltiga 4500 (Retail for about SGD1000, was offered for SGD800) or Shimano Stella 20000SW (retail for about SGD1600, was offered for SGD1100)......it was so tempting! My worry was that, should I had picked up any of these reels, I would have to match it with a much better rod than what I already had.....which will cost another SGD600-800! SGD1 = AED2.6.

Anyway, someone had offered me to tag along for the Musssandam trip. Will check it out if any vacant slot and will let you know.

Cheers!

Hello Si Kim,

If this board had all those nice features, there wouldn't be a Fishemirates forum, but that's just my personal opinion.

By the way this needlefish does have a mouth full of long, thin, sharp, needle-like teeth; not as strong as a barracuda's, it can still inflict some real pain, so be careful if you catch one. Within our group, we have nick-named it 'rocket'

Take care,
Ijlal

Any fishing over the weekend Kim?

Just can't wait to try out my new gears. Additionally had been equipping my self (while in Brunei) with few stuff for the Mussandam Trip....e.g jigs, custom made poppers, assist hooks, kevlar strings, split rings, solid rings, mono shock leaders etc

Cheers!

To Abdul,
Thanks for the reply. Welcome back to Dubai.

To Islal,
Well, maybe you are right. I could be needlefish.
But there were so many little fish being chased on the surface,
it could also be barracuda.
By the way, the needlefish doesn't have teeth?

Regards,
Si kim

Hi Si Kim,

There is no problem casting poppers with a short wire leader; however, poppers are not normally used for barracudas. Better to use plastic lip Rapalas that dive only a few feet.

Now don't get me wrong but is it possible you made a mistake in identifying hound-needlefish as barracudas?

Here's how it looks in water...

http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/PicturesSummary.cfm?ID=977&what=species

I ask this as I have never seen barracuda floating on the water as you describe (not saying it ain't possible, though.)

Cheers,
Ijlal

Kim,

Popping with a steel wire leader? I dont really think it would be necessary due the popper wouldnt be swallowed whole. The baracuda will get stuck to the treble hook(s)when attacking the popper. thus it wouldn't have any contact with the leader UNLESS its CROSSEYED and missed the popper and hit the leader.....unintentionally. A good strength shock leader e.g 100lbs rated mono leader should be adequate.

Cheers!

A couple of days ago, I saw big barracudas floating around at marina.
I believe popper will be effective for them. But I think the fish is toothy..
and wire leader is needed, otherwise we just present the popper to the
fish as a trinket on its lips.

But wire leader to popper? The casting may be awkward..
How do you use poppers for barracudas? with wire?

Yes today i was in jumeriah 2 along with one of our long lost friend heber for fishing . There were no sight of barracuda but we did have huge fights so much so four time some monoster straighted the hooks .

We enjoyed the fight but yes we could not bring it out . So we will try again to find out wht is this which can straighted the hooks so many times . Will keep you posted if we get any success .

Pranab,

Reel prices as follows;

Shimano
Navi 8000PG - AED550
Ultegra 4000 - AED580
Ultegra 5000 - AED600
Ultegra 6000 - AED600
Technium 5000FA - AED590
Sahara 4000 - AED300
Tica Taurus - AED600

Got myself a NAVI 8000PG and a Relix 5000, so won't be laughed at by others for using the BIG and HEAVY DUTY Spheros 12000FA and the Daiwa Opusbull 6000 during light fishing.

Self also got two rod cases (4" telescopic Flambeau Bazuka + Twin popping rod carrier from Pack a pole - COOSTAR vii) from someone who is trying to clear his equipments. Just missed the Jigs, poppers and fighting belt....by a mere day!

Best Regards!

Thank you thats all i can say to the best rod builder of the middleast . In fact was expecting a little more from you . You are becoming selfish day by day like all great fisherman in the uae . Dont become like the man in abudhabi . Come on people need not only a website but wanted your valued comments .

Because people who dont understand rod building you could have enlightened them with you vast knowledge on this subject to make the thing simpler . But any way i dont have any authority to ask for more so we will be satisfied with the seekers web site . In fact i remember we saw this video on dvd at your home .

Thanks once again chua for your inputs . But people like you if shy away then how will the newcommers learn . But i cant blame him the most humble fisherman i have ever seen , might have gone to a shell because of so much controversy .

And for that we are to blame that i fully agree .

Hey by the way what time at the boat show pls give me a shout before you get out of ganthoot . You are nearer to the show . I am far away . Can you manage one more pass rayan is in town he wanted to come if he finishes his meeting early . Please try for another pass if u can chua.

Pranab,

I already knew Masaood Marine was one of the exhibits as I regularly visit their showroom in Abu Dhabi. The guy recognized me and was willing to give me good discount, but they did not have anything new; only the left out rods and reels from last year probably.

There was another stall by Manal marine, if I remember the name correctly. They had Penn Slammer spinning and casting rods. The 7' 1-piece spinning model rated for 15-30 lb line is a good choice for someone on a low budget. It is a multipurpose boat rod, which would allow one to use existing spinning reels (sizes 6000 and up), so at AED 285.00 (they'll probably give some discount too,) you get a setup you can use for trolling, jigging and even popping. It is a powerful rod and in the hands of an experienced hand, can be used to pull out GT's of decent size. Use of braid is not recommended with this rod as the guides would not last too long.

I also met with Nick Bowles of Ocean Active - A nice gentleman he is. He has an array of some nice fly rods and reels in case sombody wants to get into this sport. He also has has high quality Accurate Reels.

There are two other exhibitors with Italian brands I have never heard of. One of them had a good variety of rods that seemed to be nicely built with Fuji seats and guides, but at the price, I would prefer going for a well known brand.

Lastly, there was our friend Mr. Alex from North West Marine with low priced Chinese stuff.

All in all, I was quite disappointed as I had expected a good variety of quality stuff.

My 0.02...

OK, let's finish this story.
Here is my DECLARATION!!! I, si kim (Eunbitsae), hereby declare that "sikim(sikim)" is also my username. The reason why I made another username? It was not to fake my ID but because of the recent suspecious popup of "Connect to .....". I doubted that my first username si kim (Eunbisae) could be hacked. So I simply registered again with another but similar username. I didn't think that it could cause this serious(?) problem. And I also declare that I will continuously use both my usernames, si kim(Eunbitsae) and sikim(sikim). I hope everything is clear now. (Sigh....)

To Ijlal,
I appologize for causing you misunderstanding if any. I appologize if you were offended by my words, "don't get strung..." (though I never had any intention to offend you). And thanks for your defending "Real si kim", if it was your intention. Someday let's meet and have a cup of coffee talking about fishing.. OK?

Hey Guys,

I am sure you all know, so this is just to remind you that Dubai boat show is beginning today. I have never been to one before but have heard many tackle companies will be displaying their products. This should be a good time to get a good bargain on some nice gear.

Cheers,
Ijlal

Dear Abdul Latif,

I have nothing against Si Kim. All he has to do is come forward and declare as you did about his two ID's, but that should be done from his original ID. In the current spate of events, what else would one do but doubt any suspicious post?

Thanks,

I would just advise them please lets be togather . I would be organising a small get togather at my house , where every one is welcomed who loves fishing just to know each other which will help people to avoid this kind of unwanted controversy .

I am doing this only to give the opportunity to those members who are nurturing an existing ill feeling inside them which was born out of simple misunderstanding .

I know i cant satisfy every one because some one would say if he comes i wont come . But dotn expect me to purposely say no to a particular member . I would announce the date in my later post which is convenient to every one .

Si Kim or whoever you are,

If you are Si Kim (eunbitsae) then you should have answered using your previous (eunbitsae) ID to clear up the controversy.

If you really are the original Si Kim, then it is you who is being high strung, not me. You should realize I was adressing an imposter who in my opinion was trying to fake your ID. So I was actually defending the real Si Kim. If you are him why then are you being so aggresive? Do you realize I can make a new ID as Si-Kim and start writing as if it were you?

Kindly do us a favour and come back with your original ID and announce that you have changed your ID.

Dear ijlal ,

I asked this question to give people here a more interesting topic . What was going on for the past few days had nothing to do with fishing .

There were other two reason to give this question . As you knw the kind of a mad fishing guy i am i keep reading and reading on the net and came across a rod designed by big danny frm uk kent the rods name is grand century . But this version is only available in the united states and claims you can use this rod both as a multiplier and a spinning rod i mean dubal purpose . Till date this was the first time i came across such a rod .

Being a nubie in this sport i dare to question something designed by big danny . But there was a question behind my mind .

I wrote to my friend neil in uk who is also a world champion designer of 525 mag and regularly communicates with on various topics . I am yet to get the reply . In fact i have asked him the same questions . He is yet to travel because he is travelling from home back from abroad .

I will post his valuable advices . I have another fishing friend named RAYAN WHITE an authority in the sport in united states .

Yet to get his answers also on the above mentioned questions . Although the questions are quite basic but what i feel discussing on these kind of topic will enrich our knowledge rather that a dog fight in the forum .

And yes i have also seen this box which but i never filled it . I feel its a ploy by some one who is good in software trying to hack password and create confusion . Not only this i received emails posing as forum administrator asking for resetting the password .

I have ignored all this because i think its wastage of time to think on these things . I feel i had more time in day to learn more about fishing .

Angler 14 are you not the same person who posted a list of difficult questions in shore angling forum like this about boat fishing one year back and tried to prove you are the best .

Buddy when every one was spitting at you i think you forgot i wrote in favour of you whn u said you will leave the form provided any one answers them .

I remember kit answered all of them infront of me from his house around 8 in the evening after we fished in marina .

I also remember i told no one should leave the forum because i knw how fishermen are . They cant stay away frm the group neither they should .

I still say he same word people should talk about fishing rather then anything else here and no one should stop writing .

I love u angler 14 because of your fishign knowledge .

Hi Abdul,

Yes, Mussandam was fantastic. If it had been a fishing trip, I should have been much much better. But anyway I managed to do some fishing in front of the hotel. (for just an hour with my wife's "generous" consent..) While my wife was checking the time, I got a decent sized yellowtail scad. took a photo and free-willied..

By the way, I decided to join you & Chua to the boat fishing in April. I told Chua and his answer was yes.

I think, we should not respond to emails from guys who are not genuine users. I mean, user names other than actual or real names.

Why to hide our names with fake user ID's. We are not committing a fraud here. Its just about sharing knowledge.

Additionally, as there is no one monitoring the contents of the Posts in this forum, so i request writers to adher to some code of ethics and avoid racial or discriminatory remarks based on country, relgion or race.

How was Mussandam? Managed to do some fishing?

A friend of mine has got a pictorial chart/poster of "the fishes of the Emirates". I am also trying to get hold of one...having both the scientific as well as the local names, its very useful in trying to identify the fishes.

Anybody can assist to get this?

A few words on rod actions.

A fast action rod will have a stiffer rod, enabling the tip to straighten up faster, consequently helping in faster line recovery. On the other end of the scale, there are slow action rods. Most common rods have medium or regular actions.

Many of the high-quality, expensive graphite rods have fast actions. Fast action blanks are difficult to manufacture, therefore the high price for such rods.

Fast action rods usually cast better and farther than slow or medium action rods, as they are able to give a more solid puch to the cast due to faster recovery of the blank.

Ijlal

Hey Pranab,

Are you testing us or what? Don't tell me you do not know the answers already In any case these are good questions for the beginners on this forum to know the answers to.

Here's my two cents:

1) Spinning rods have bigger guides because during a cast, the line comes out in loops that straighten as the line progresses towards the tip; when these loops pass through the first or stripper guide, it invariably comes into contact with the guide's eye or ring causing friction. It goes like this, the larger the guide the lesser the friction, and the lesser the friction, the more distance that is achieved. Baitcasting or multiplying reels do not need large guides as line comes out straight due to revolving spool.

2)There are stiffer and lighter tips in both types of rods, depending on the action of the rod, line rating and the weight it was designed to cast. Generally, the lighter the casting weight a blank was designed for, the softer the tip it would have.

3 & 4)It can be done but that would raise the pressure points too high above the rod and may not give the best action to the rod when using a baitcasting reel. Also, high guides (due to replacing smaller dia guides with spinning guides) will not allow line to be peeled straight. In such a case line would be peeled off at an angle during a cast ensuring line is always in contact with the stripping guide, thereby increasing friction and decreasing distance.

5) Generally speaking the smaller the diameter, the greater the distance; however, it all depends on the rod, the reel, line and the casting weight. One cannot cast a 10 oz weight on 8 lb line without expecting break-offs even with 50 lb shock leader. Similarly, using 8 lb line on a rod rated for 15-40 lb line, or filling a bait caster with a bigger and heavier spool would not be wise. As an example, If you have a 12ft surf casting rod rated for 15-30 lb line and 3-6 oz casting weight, and you have any of 525Mag, 7HT, SL20/30SHA, any of Abu 6500/6600/7000 or similar baitcaster, I would fill the reel with the thinnest, quality 20lb line and cast 5oz weight for maximum distance.

Hope this helps,
Ijlal

Pranab,

Here are my two cents;

1) spinning rod guides are bigger due to the fact that the lines are being spun into the spool at considerably much wider movements rather than that of the multiplier which more or less just being swiped from side to side.

2) the stiffness of the rod and its tip is depending upon the max weight rating AND also rods which are used for casting purposes are usually having more flexible tip than that used for jigging due to get the extra distance due to the extra momentum from the swingging of the tip.

Spinning rods can be used with the conventionasl/multiplier reels BUT its better to use the actual conventional/multiplier specific rod where the reel seats are sort of being made lower and there is a sort of trigger to be used to stabilise the holding due to the "top heavy" characteristic of the "top loading" compared to the spinning reel which sits below.

Maybe others which are more experienced and knowledgeable can give much better/accurate info on this.

Best Regards!

hi guys ,

Does any one know the answer to this question .

1) Why the guide of a spinning rod is always bigger than a multipilier rod

2) Is the tip of a spinning rod less stiffer than a multipilier rod

3) If some one wants to use a rod for both purpose i mean multiplier use and spinning use can that be done on a multiplier rod by stipping the small guides and repleacing them with bigger guides .

4) Will that have any effect on the cast . What will be the result better cast or less cast .

5) What is the ideal line size to throw from a multipilier to get the maximum distance . 0.25 , 0.32, 0.35, 0.45

These are a few queries that is bothering me for the past few days . If people who are using multipilier for ages can answer the above questions would be grateful . Please dont take these questions as brain teasers . I am very keen to know the answers to the abovequestion .

And also if any one can help me out with ABU MULTIPILIER tuning knowledge . I am new in this hence so many questions . May be some of them very foolish to experiened anglers who visit this forum .

Would be grate ful to receive some tips on the above subject .

Hi Mr. Pranab,

My name is tariq, working as an edtech officer in Abu Dhabi Men's college for the last one year. Recently my friend introduced me to fishing, from that day onwards i was hooked on to fishing.
i have never caught a big fish, except measuring to the size of my hand. i have all the kit, i suppose, rods, hooks, threads. but i never seem to catch anything big. my dream is to catch a big fish, even if its just 1 kg. maybe i dont know the right spots in abu dhabi. so could u please help me out in this matter!!! i would really appreciate it.

My mobile number is 0502627174.

Dear amir ,

Please dont put me in the same level with others . The names you mentioned have spend minimum 15 to 20 years by the water . I am just 1-2 years in this . I have to learn a lot before my name can be taken along with them .

In fact yesterday i was talking to ian about carp fishing . I dont knw abcd of carp fishing . And after talking to him for 20 mins i realised that there are lot of people in these two forums whom i consider really great fishermen and feel blessed that i am in touch with them via these forums

regards

pranab

Guys,

My idea of competition was to get a few like minded people at an event where we could get to meet others as well and share knowledge and info on fishing. Guys like Ian, Ijlal, Pranab and Chua has fishing experience in abundance.

Such an event would not only help in creating a better understanding betweem the forum members but would also help the sport here in UAE
