Pranab, Congratulations on getting back your rod and reel! Good to see there still remains some honesty and integrity in this world. BTW, better sell your 950SS to me before you really lose it! This would also give you a reason to get a new Stella! Yeah, I am serious! Take care, Ijlal |

Hey guys, Any idea what became of the Big6? There was so much hollering about it earlier and finally when it did take place, everyone's quiet as a mouse! Two teams were supposed to represent Fish Emirates, yet there is silence over there too! Would love to know the results. Pranab, I am sure we can depend on you to find out. Thanks, Ijlal |

Thousand apologies on bended knees Syed_yi. Okay so twas a Cobia and a Penn Power Stick. I wont dare forget that ever.(TeeHeeHee) And yeah...that was a Badha. In fact if anyone fancies the fish, there are tons to be caught below the maktoum bridge. I yanked in bout 50 kgs of this fish over a period of bout just a week. And fact is its an awesome tasting fish - tooo damn good for words - especially marinaded with chilli, turmeric, pepper, salt and corn flour and deep fried. I could polish off bout a kilo at a siting. Pranab, Syed, Abdul, Adam - Sorry if my postings lean more towards the "cooking" rather than the "hooking" aspects of 'fishing' guys. Dont mean to insult this forum. - But I'm a firm believer in "what I hunt is what I eat". Sorry Pranab, i dont believe in kissing fish. Maybe if they had the lips of of Kim Bassinger, Julia Roberts or Kiera Knightley or Ann Hathaway and smelt as good - Id kiss em. But bout letting em go - NEVERR.YEEEHOHOHOHOHO. Also, lemme take this opportunity to introduce meself to Udupa and Kim Hi there Udupa and Kim. I'm Dylan as is obvious - a novice open sea fisherman of sorts. But I guess my tenacity, enthusiasm, raw aptitude and love for the sport will compensate for my inexperience. Look foward to attaching a face to the name soon. And Udupa I did visit the site and took a peek at the whopper your dad caught. It looked big enough to eat a goat. Abdul - maybe THIS Barak was the one who escaped Pranab's line in Abu Dhabi and decided to flee the emirate. Heheheheh. K then guys, bye for now. Keep in touch and keep the faith. |

To Pranab, Regarding your Friday morning report.... I think it's a little bit too much exaggerated, especially on my behavior.. You showed me two good spots in Jumeirah which are new to me. I appraciated and just followed you. I didn't say.. to be more precise, I couldn't say that cudas are not there. I can't say so because I don't know the spot. At the spots, I didn't ask you if fish were there, but just trusted you. You told me that the fish are there. I wasn't dejected at all at the first spot and didn't smoke cigarette after cigarette in tension as you described. After a few lure castings, you told me to try bottom fishing. After 1~2 tries of bottom, you said the fish were moving out and suggested me to move to the second spot. I just followed you, saying nothing. I smoked one cigarette.. maybe during the bottom fishing and it was my first and last cigarette on the day's fishing. I'm not a chain-smoker. hahahaha.. Of course I was happy to be able to catch the two big barracudas at the second spot. Yes, I enjoyed a lot and appreciate for your decision to go there. I, however, didn't throw any doubt on your first catch if it was by chance. I didn't laugh at your attempt and neither did any guys around. Too much exaggeration, buddy. According to your description, I was described like an impatient and suspicious little boy or a novice who just did whatever you "told" me to. hahahaha... No? you didn't mean that? Then read your post again IN MY SHOES. Of course if there is some color added, a story can become more exciting. But it is fishing report, buddy.. not a story. And I believe a REPORT must be written as it is without any coloring. One more thing... you released the first fish you caught with the disappointment of the "Philippino" guys (I am not really sure if they were philippinos as you say.) And kept on telling them to release the fish everytime when even I hooked up. Why? They were helping us with a little little hope that they can get those fish. If we don't want to keep them, we can give the fish to those who need. I don't want you to be a "fish protectionists" as somebody is. Stay being a fisherman. hahaha... After all, I thank you very much for sharing the spots with me and for advising me a lot that day for me to be able to catch those fish there. You were really awesome to find where the fish are. I am also happy to have nice fishing friends like you and other guys. Regards, Si Kim |

Ijlal’s response is spot on, here’s a bit more info. Well, I’ve only been fishing for dorado in Fujairah once, so that hardly makes me an expert there (!!!), but techniques etc are pretty much the same as elsewhere. I’ve also had several good chats with Dave Holley and others who are Fujairah regulars, so here goes….a few tips …. 1) Location – I don’t have a GPS, but the dorado are usually hooked up around the tankers moored off Fujairah, starting about 7 miles out ENE from FIMC. You can see the tankers easily from land. Troll around the bow first, though the length of the tanker and stern also can produce. Troll with splashy surface trolling lures/poppers. Keep your eyes peeled – if you see any dorado, stop and fish here, spinning/popping/livebaits. If nothing is raised/sighted after a few passes over the bow, move on to the next tanker. 2) Technique – dorado respond well to pretty much any method on the surface – spinning, popping, trolling, livebait, fly, deadbait. Livebait we used were mackerel jigged on a sabiki rig inshore. In Fujairah, the dorado seem to hit the live/deadbait and then come back and finish it off, possibly as the mackerel are quite big for their mouths. So when you get the first taps, give them line and wait for a minute till it starts peeling off the reel, then strike – and strike several times to make sure the hook gets a good hold. A smaller livebait/deadbait might be a good idea. Obviously with lures you don’t have this problem. Once hooked, the fireworks start, and they’ll jump, somersault and tailwalk in an effort to throw the hook. Enjoy! 3) Tackle – the trolling rods we used on the boat looked to be 30 lb class and were matched with TLD 20s and more than sufficient. Next time I’d take my spinning outfit with 15lb test, as some of those on board had seen better days!! Hooks used on the livebaits were circle hooks, about size 3/0 I’d guess….but obviously you use a hook to match the size of the bait. We used stinger rigs, but I don’t think they’re necessary if you give the fish line after the first few taps on the bait. The key is in locating them – they don’t seem particularly boat shy, and it’s quite easy to sight fish them if they are around. The skipper hadn’t seen any for a few days before this and other anglers who fished the day before and last w/end came back empty-handed. The skipper also seemed to think the season was finishing (we went first w/end in March), so you might have ‘missed the boat’! Peak season there seems to be Nov – Jan. Check the East Coast website/contact them to see what’s being caught http://www.eastcoastfishing.ae/indexasp.asp , so even if you take your own boat out you’ll have an idea of what’s being caught. Tight lines!! Best R |

Hey Pranab, I am sure ritchie would be able to add his valuable Fujairah-specific input on catching Dolphinfish a.k.a. Dorado a.k.a. Mahi-mahi; however, having caught some myself elsewhere, here's my two cents: Dolphinfish is a topwater fish. It spends its life on or near the surface and is usually found in the open. It is a fast and powerful fighter and jumps repeatedly out of water when hooked. Being a surface dweller, it is usually caught on surface lures such as small to medium sized soft head skirts, live bait (without sinker), and unweighted drifted dead fish-bait (whole), though I once caught one on a Rapala CD18, too. When targeting dorado, be sure to keep a spinning rod rigged with a spoon, shallow diving plug or a small popper handy, as these fish move along in groups of 2 or 3. Once a fish is hooked on trolling, you will notice another one following it. If you are able to cast out your lure - it is important, before you take the first fish out of water, you will have a very good probability the second one would strike your lure. It loves to stay close to floating structure, so ships anchored in the open awaiting a berth at the port are the number one places to find these fish. If you see any object floating on suface out in the open sea, even if it is a meter square in area, be sure to cast your lure near it. Mahi mahi is in my opinion, one of the tastiest fish I have ever caught. A point of caution here, however is that you have to be very careful when gutting this fish; if you happen to puncture the gallbladder, rest assured you will not be able to eat the fish. Thanks, Ijlal |

If only I was able to keep those barracudas fresh all the way from Abu Dhabi, I would be more than happy to give it away to you guys who like the fish. Somehow, (almost all) Bruneians don't seemed to like the fish. Might just be the menacing look of it. Due to the current availability of lots of small bait fish in the waters, its the season for the barracudas and the queens. The queens will give solid fights from hook-ups till its out of the water. Just make sure you have good strong lines otherwise there will be lots of them swimming around with lures sticking to their cheeks! Additionally to hook up a queen, one must give a strong jerk upon a strike due to the very hard skeletal structure of the mouth and chin......and not to mention the very tough, leather-like skin. Cheers! |

Hi guys , Yesterday was full moon i think . I went under the makhtoum to take my daughter to meet her favourite dog diablo . I met six thai guys who were fishing there . As my character goes i tried to make frienship with them . They dont know english . But we did strike frienship with sign language . And i learned a new word from them . Kung it means shrimp as i was trying to make them understand that shrimp is the most effective bate in the creek waters . They drew pics of sting rays . And told me they love cooking sting ray as its considered as tounge teaser in soutun thailand a small fisherman village in southern thailand . So i promised them today i will go hunting sting rays the deal is if we are lucky and hook up sting ray they cook their thai style sting ray for me .Yummm . So going hunting at 6.30 - 7 today on the outskirts of palm . Because i knw that area is the place where the shallow waters attracts sting rays . Abdul are you listening this he he . By the way the arab guy who screamed at me because i was releasing fish in jumeriah will also join me in the ray hunt today. Take care guys pranab 0506789546 |

Good to see some catch reports on here - well done to those who went out of AUH, Pranab/Ijlal/Abdul/Adam etc. I went camping to RAK took the kayak out for a couple of brief (1 hour)and unspectacular trolling sessions around the new coastguard station in RAK. Conditions were not good - low tide on both sessions and a bit of a nasty chop, but there were one or two fish around - a few small barracuda and a nice-sized snapper hit the Crystal Minnows on the late afternoon session, the snapper and one of the barracuda ending up in the camp fire for dinner. Next morning just after dawn I took the kayak out again, this time had a couple of small 'cuda on a small X rap rapala and a bartail flathead of a couple of pounds on the Crystal Minnow. Flathead was dinner, roasted with olive oil, sea salt and black pepper and garlic - delicious! A buddy who shore-fished the morning had a similar CR, with juvenile grouper/trevally thrown in too on livebaits/fishbaits. Yesterday took the kayak out in Dubai near the Sheraton/JBR, heavy seas so stayed well inshore in sheltered areas, had a few small 'cuda on various Yozuri Minnows, a couple which I kept for dinner. Had a double hook up which was a bit of a handful and resulted in me losing my fave Crystal Minnow lure - doh!! Pranab asked for a posting re: dorado catching, will do so as soon as I have time. Abdul!!! Jeeez Man!! You've been busyyyyyy cranking I see. You lucky chimp. Did your Zodiac say twas gonna be raining fish on your fortunes? Thats like 45 Kgs of fish man...Heck, I would open a fish factory if I caught that much in a day. HeHeHe. Anyway, im very happy for you. Its just so supremely satisfying when you have a good catch on deck. I know the feeling. Especially when I go wild boar hunting. Exhilarating. You must should us the spot sometimes soon. And sorry bout the one that got away. Bright side is he'll only get bigger for you the nxt time around. Thanks for the 'welcome' you & Partho extended me after my near 6/7 yrs of hibernation. Hadnt done much deep sea fishing anyways. But then, with accomplished guys like yourselves to direct me, and with the natural instinctive proclivity I have for hunting & fihing (wheted since I was a child growing up in a tropical jungle environment)I should prove a good protege and learn and pick things up fast. Tks also for extending your apologies to my remora. The 'remora' is not 'remorseful' anymore. It heaved a final sigh of relief and died peacefully in my arms. Heheheheee. Anyways, G'night buddy. Hope to see you soon in Dxb... |

Yo Mates! Adam - thanks a ton for the photo postings buddy. That was very prompt. You have immortalized our trip in the annals of the digital world for eternity. And a great bunch of pics too. I especially liked the pic with the entire group - nicely profiled against the warm noon sun - the 6 marauding pirates. The scurge of fun-loving sea creatures great n small. Hehehe. Syed, yeah yeah yeah...so twas a "mediocre" fishing day for you I seeeee...hummmm. But then, for one who has battled 1 1/2 hour with a 56Kg GT and landed it with a didley PENN STICH rod this day would, be but kinda mediocre I guess. Eh? Next time we'll go for the big fins - maybe in Mussandam? Durado, Kings, GT - the full monty and make ya proud!! Partho, if we're on for stingray tomorrow gimme a shout around noon. I have a medic appt at 12.30 and shud be free after bout 4pm. Waz up Abdul? No word from you. You mentioned you had a rod to dispose. Can you pls call me so we cud conclude this (number is 050 2133701). Maybe we cud meet along with Partho and take it further? Tks in advance. Part of the Barak i cooked already (gravy - yum) and part I have filleted and is marinading in lemon, dry ginger&garlic, 5 spices, dry mango, black pepper and oyster sauce. Something new I'm trying. Adam, can you confirm you email ID. Tried calling you - conection error. And tks again for the pics. G'night guys and God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen.... |

Went fishing AGAIN this morning in Abu Dhabi with three other Bruneians. At the same spot which I had mentioned in my earlier post as being the "dardamans' spot" caught few dardamans, 08 good size baracudas (between 3-5kgs), 01 catfish weighing about 4kgs and a queen fish weighing about 3.5kgs. Other smaller catches were a baby baracuda and a baby shark. One good size cobia estimated about 5kgs just slipped away due to the treble hook of the lure gave way just as we were pulling it out from the water. Released all the small/juvenile fishes and as for the big ones were all given away to the guy who looked after our friend's boat. My Yozuri green minnow is almost stripped bare of the paint from all the attacks of the baracudas. I had personally caught three of the eight. The sea was very very choppy and the current was extremely strong. If only the sea was as calm as the day before, would have been able to get more. BTW, my sincere appologies to Dylan for forgetting about the remora & Welcome back to the fishing arena. Thanks for the pics Adam and nice to meet you. My greatest appologies to Pranab for backing out from the meet, at the very last minute. Cheer! |

Hello mates, Sorry for not being able to write earlier. Actually, when we came back, I was anxious to find the correct name of the fish you people were calling Coral Fish. I knew the name of that fish but could not remember, so I went to fishbase.org but could not find any fish the that name. I then wanted to search on the Agricent.something website that some of you have pointed out in the past so searched Google for the site. Google warned me that that site could harm my computer but as I had Norton Internet Security installed with up to date definitions, I did not pay heed. The result was I got hit by some kind of worm that NIS blocked, but the worm got the better of it, so now I have a seriously compromised computer on hand to take care of. I am not accessing any sensitive sites such as my email. I am dying to upload and share the videos expertly made by Adam that give a glimpse of the great time we had, but I guess it will take a day or two more to fix up the PC. Thanks, Ijlal |

Hi ritchie , Hey i need your inputs man . I remember you wrote you had hooked up quite a no of durados about 10 within three of you with east cost fishing charters . Please give me details . Do you have the gps corrdinates . Were did you sail form . What did you use to hook them up . I have never hooked them up . But i want to close this season with a trip to the mussandam area with only two fish hunting targets . Durado and GT . I havent caught neighter of them . So i lack experience to go after them . But i would love your inputs what tackle used what enviornment hook size or what kind of lure etc etc . For GT i would bank of udupas experience in the region . Only once i got these inputs from you two guys i will plan a sea trip in that region . I want to make the trip a sucessful one like the one we did in abudhabi . Hence would love to have your valuable tips on both the kind of fish . This trip we concentrate only on durado and GT . Please let me know . I need specific details the fight the grear ratio required to handle this kind of fish the rods wich are appropiate and of course the lures . With regards pranab 0506789546 |

hi guys , Friday morning report . Kim called me around 9 on thrusday after i came back home exhausted after the sea trip . He was sad that he could not make it for the trip . I did feel bad because i told him initially the trip would be on thrusday so he changed his work schedule . And later when chua told his unavalibilty in dubai i shifted the trip . I apologise for this to kim from the bottom of my heart . So i was feeling bad . We decided to meet at the jumeriah 2 surf at 5.30 . Being a die hard fisherman i saw kim is present at my door at 5 early morning . Whn i came to meet he and told i will tell giv him my rod and come along with him he said no pranab take rest . Ifyou are not fishing i will go alone to marina . I said what do you want to hunt for . He said cudas . I said why all the way to marina you can get them in jumeriah . He said he heard they are not there . So we set out for jumeriah 2 . It was clear sky calm sea . We could hook up a single barracuda for first one hour . I watched kim smoking cigg after cigg in tension . Tried bottom but without any result . He was asking me am i sure there are fish around . I saw his dejected face . I watchd the enviorment and his tackle . I saw the cudas at the distance but was unreachable with his limp rod which he got from the boat show . I looked at the sea and looked at the wind direction . My gut feelings told i have to change the place where the wind direction is moving the waves to crash on the rocks . Because the fish would move to that area . So i convienced him to take his car and move to that kind of a spot . When we changed spot we saw there are 17 fisherman in a row shoulder to shoulder standing . Few of them told me pranab you come now . What dull day no bottom fish no cudas nothing . I looked at the water i saw the that they are there . Every one laughed on my attempt . I took the rod frm kim and threw it . Bam first throw hook up . I reeled in the fish with the clapping of philipino guys lapu lapu . I released the first with astonishment in the face of the philipino guy begging me for the first . I gave the rod to kim i said you try . Kim said are you sure may be it was by chance . I said i am sure you try . First throw of kim . Bam hook up . There were philipino fisherman excited helping to unhook the fish . I wanted to release . But kim gave it away to them . Second throw by kim bam hook up . Third throw kim bam hook up . I saw kims face beaming in glee . My day was made one after other till kim lost the lure to a rock . I told him throw another lure to retrieve his lost lure . Here i noticed the exp of kim how he did it with precision . Got back the yuzuri hydro magnum . We decided to move with all 17 guys throwing for cudas . It was indeed a nice experience to return home with satisfaction . And i am happy i got a fishing buddy like kim who is down to earth and so sober . Am sure we would do many more fishing togather . With regards pranab 0506789546 |

Dear udu , Yes i know you did catch kings on poppers . Actually i had a notion poppers only attracts GT because this kind of fish attacks lures which makes a splashing sound . I never knew king fish is attracted to poppers . But when i saw you first post this pic few months back i started to change my views . But as you know my deep sence of investigation to the bottom of the matter drove me through internet pages reading about it . And at last i ended up with my ex boss with those marvellous dvd which showed how in indonesia people are targetting kings with poppers . Here in the uae waters people normally use live bait and hook at the tail and try kings near the exit of channels . Or else they use trible hook spoons with diving orange yzuri boards to tareget deeper areas of sea floor for bigger kings . But really when i saw your marvellous king pic with poppers you did gain respect from my side . But now i knw they do come with poppers also . Udu i will like to conduct a trip in the mussandam penensular . And you know i am a guy with small resources . I love fishing and i try alwys to conduct trips with are cheap yet secure . This present trip to auh big blue costed us only 200 dirhams per head . I think thts reasonable with the kind of boat we had with a gps and all . I would love you to join us in the next trip to mussandam if i do it finally and share your huge experience in those waters . Its a request to you as i cant afford boats of AED 2700 . I hope if you consider my request this fishing friend of yours will be honoured . I alwys regard your and your fathers knowledge . You are born in a fisherman family . I respect these facts . regards pranab 0506789546 |

WHY FISHING IS BETTER THAN MAKING LOVE In fishing you lie about the one that got away. In loving you lie about the one you caught. You can catch and release a fish, you don't have to lie and promise to still be friends after you let it go. Fish don't compare you to other fishermen neither and don't want to know how many other fish you caught. You don't have to necessarily change your pickup line to catch a new fish. |

Hi Mates, Must say it was one heckofa day out on the Big Blue in Abu Dhabi. While hauling in the big catch was certainly a high point of the day, what I do value most is meeting all you guys through the enterpirse of Pranab and the warm friendship he extended me right from our first meeting bout a month ago. It wouldnt have been possible otherwise. Thanks Parthu. And Yo! Abdul...whats this apology for the jokes buddy? No life without humor man! Arent we supposed to be the robust, tough skinned, buoyant, hardy men-of-the-sea Eh? The ebullient jolly mariner whose sole companion in the harsh expanse of the ocean is his sense of humor eh...Yo Ho Ho an a Bottle o Rummmm.. Anyways mates, it was great day full of fish, fun and comaraderie and I had fun...even enjoyed losing Parthu's HUGE baraK big as a camel..SHYIIT Maaan! Hehee. But good news - in fact excellent news is that Kim and Partho yanked out 5 Barraks in Jumeriah this morning. Both are on cloud 9 right now. Twas a pity I didnt get to meet u guys at Parthu's place this last evening. Maybe nxt time. And yes, we should do this again - and more frequently. Fuj would be good. And anyway, your postings mention ALL the breed of fish we caught EXCEPT my humble Remora..sniff sniff...boohoohoo. I'm so dejected. My remora would be turning in its grave(y) with the insult.Sob Sob. I had put a stopper on my fishing bout 6 yrs ago and its wonderful to be back n the action again - courtesy Parthu. Like birds of a feather flock together and fish of a scale swim together, fishermen of a rod must reel together(and I dont mean reeling drunk...hehehe) By the way, even my dog avoided me coz I was stinking of fish after have scaled and gutted all the fish that night. the bloody fish shops here refused to clean it - scoundrels. Importantly I need to revive my fishing gear with a limited budget. So any advice, help or directions would be welcome. Ciao for niao..meao |

Dear Syed Ijlal, Likewise, the pleasure was also mine...to have been able to get to know you as well as others in the flesh. We sure had a fair bit of fun yesterday! Cranking in the Baracudas, Sheries, scads, orange spotted trevallys, sultan ibrahims, coral fish and not forgetting the tuna(kawa-kawa)......and not to mention the biggest fish of all....which managed to get away with Pranab's lure...he..he..he..! I do sincerely hope that none of you guys felt any hard feelings (towards me) from all the jokes we threw at each other. How many kgs was the total catch.....you estimated? The first two baracudas which yourself and me hooked were really big. Infact, the treble hooks on my yozuri lure were both pulled open because, if you can recall I got few hits but no hook ups prior to that. The kawa-kawa was the most fun! It jumped initially and then headed straight down...under the boat. We should do this more often, if possible in other parts e.g Fujairah, Khorfakan, Dibba etc. Cheers! |

Hi guys , I just feel that i have lost my words . I saw 6 dvds at abduls place . I am happy that a guy like abdul has joined this forum . He is just new to fishing not even a year . But the drive which is inside him is amazing . First i saw the new tackles that he got over from brunei . Then those amazing dvds . Abduls wife gave me coffee but i was in such a state of shock to watch the dvds which literally showed king fish jumping out of water min 7/10 feet after hitting the poppers . Yes some of you might think king fish in poppers . Normally we know GT on popper but here in the islands of malay and indonesia amazing footage of fishing . It even showed how they are making lure out of coconut tree leaves . I told abdul seeing this makes me both happy and sad . Happy because some one doing it at some corner of the world . Sad because i dont have a airline job to reach to these places . Now only motto is to get an airline job . May be even as a porter because then i will get free tkts to reach these places . I am doing a rerun of the dvds at my place if every one agrees . There is no entry frees in the show . But who ever comes must cook one dish of their national food . I will be cooking 3 dish . Hope no one has got any objection against it . I am still in a state of shock and once again thank you boss for all these . With regards pranab 0506789546 |

Abdul Latif & Pranab, Count me in if you intend to go on 20th. The weather forecast is not too bad for the morning with wind around 10 km/h. The water is likely to be a bit murky near the shore due to North Westerly winds thoughout the week, but it should be okay a bit offshore. Tell me if you want to book a boat in Abu Dhabi. Cheers, Ijlal |

Pranab, Busy cranking that new Sahara? Have you spooled it up with the Ultegra line which came with the reel? When are you going to "test drive" the reel? BTW The Navi 8000PG had been keeping me awake as well...he..he..he.. Cheers! |

Hello Atef, Good to hear from you after so long. I have always thought of getting a small, inexpensive inflatable and try some fishing close to the shore and in the channels around here but have been afraid of the authorities, as I have come across no rules and regs regarding these craft. Did you get into any trouble with the authorities? I mean, did anybody tell you to get outta water or anything, as I am sure these boats cannot be registered. You have mentioned you had good fishing. For the benefit of us other members, can you please write a detailed account of where and how you fished, and what you caught? It would be very interesting to read Thanks, Ijlal |
