Went out on a boat fishing trip on Saturday morning with Deira Marine Tours with Anton,Zaman, Mohammed and two new friends namely Khaled and Ahmed. The sea was quite choppy.

Started to push out at 06.30a.m. Arriving at the first spot, Mohammed, Anton and myself started to jig. Just at the second cast....when the bailarm was still opened, something considerably big hit my jig! It was pulling the line quite fast. After tightening the drag setting, I managed to slow it down but after pumping it for a while, it cameback with a sudden burst of energy! Anyway, after a while managed to land the 5kg barracuda, with Anton's kind assistance. :-)

Got a few more hits but no solid hook-ups. Others doesn't seemed to be as lucky with their jigs initially......for some unknown reasons.

Next few spots were not as fruitful for jigging but others who were bottom fishing managed to bring up some sheary, sultan ibrahim, bream and trevally.

As the sea was getting much rougher and wind was blowing stronger we decided to head back to the first few spots.

I managed to bring up two king fish of 2.5kg and 1.5kg and another barracuda of 1.5kg. Mohammed also managed to hook-up a Hamour of 2kg. Anton also managed to hook-up a 1.5kg hamour on a jig...(his first fish on jig!) :-)

We decided to call it a day at about 10.30a.m as we saw thick clouds developing and noticed that there were storms developing. Total catch was estimated to be about 20kgs. Would have been better if the weather was permitting and the sea calmer :-(

Mohammed with 2kg hamour

5kg barracuda

Anton happy with 1st fish on jig

2.5kg kingfish

1.5kg kingfish

Ciao!

Hi Antonello,

Nothing for me for the time being. Thanks for the offer anyway!

If you are after lures form Rapala, Storm or Yo-Zuri.....better just get them from Dubai as they are considerably much cheaper than anywhere else. Unless you are thinking of getting something else (some other brands) or a different range than that of the brands available here.....to be different thus attracting more fish! :-)

Please do let me know if you have any plans.....

Dear Fishermen!!!

hi to all and good to see everyone is busy,
i just wanted to share some info with you,
I came to Italy yesterday (sardinia) and of course went to my favourite fishing shop for stocking up my light tackle, which is not really available in Dubai's shops, and some worms,
anyway looking around i discovered that the rapalas, jigs and most of the lures prices have increased so much!
for you fellows fisherman i thought you might need some light tackle, so let me know..i will be back in Dubai on thursday...

by te way the weather is a bit rough these days but i will try my luck on some rock-fishing in the evenings...lets see....

By the way i am planning a fishing day out of RAK coast, the next week end, Abdul I know you wanted to try, i'll inform you on how many people we can go...

this is my Italian number by te way..

+393471583813

Ok guys enjoy the weekend....and the sun :-(

Hi Ramzi,

Sharries of 500gms each are excellant catching from the shore. The also give good fights as after getting hooked they run down towards you in to the rocks and your line gets snapped.

The area opposite the Kempinski is probably one of the best areas left to target and at times there are some very good fish present. At the start of last winter we caught kingfish, queenfish and the odd stingray on the Kempinski side of the channel. Unfortunately this is now hoarded off and is no longer accessible. We tried the opposite side a few weeks ago but again it looks like building works are starting here as well. The place is also filthy - why do some anglers insist on leaving all their rubbish behind ?

Hi Amir,

Its opposite of Ajman Kempinski. On the break water which is actually the way leading to Ajman port.

To get there, U will have to take the E11 highway and follow the direction to a power plant....which I had forgotten the name :-(

Then just follow the direction leading toward the beach leading all the way to the breakwater.

The GPS coordiantes as follows;
25.25.46.66N
55.26.38.91E

This is the same place where Keyur had caught a Queenfish posted onthe other forum.

I had not been lucky yet at that place BUT have heard lots of stories of kingfish and rays being caught there.

I myself had seen quite a lot of big rays passing by....in groups! The waterway designed for big cargo ships thus quite deep. There are also lots of Saafi near to the rocks.

Cheers!

Hi Shahzad,

Not too sure about the "compatibility" with your Ugly Stik as I had never had one of those before BUT as long as the guides are not made of soft materials e.g plastics like most of the cheapo rods, it should be alright. Additionally do believe that the XDS is much more "guide friendly" than the original Fireline as its smoother and softer.

Cheers!

Hi Shaz,

The lightist lbs fireline xds available with them was 17kgs (37 lbs). Will check with them as I frequently visit them.

How many days did your tackle take to get to you from Cabela's. I had earlier ordered a few lures to check them out. Got the stuff in 3 weeks.

Any idea if there is any duty or other charges that we have to pay if we order rods, reels etc.

Abdul, I agree - that is where i picked up my fireline from. what a difference - i use it back home in USA, it has been a while since i used mono and after just getting back from a short outing i will never again even think about mono. not even a comparison.

now to the fishing: the beach by dubai sailing club is still closed, and from the stench for good reason. I saw someone venturing out to the jetty anyway, as well as various folks swimming. BAD IDEA, there is obviously a lot of raw sewage around there.

my wife and i decided on a whim to head down to the 'crescent' at the top of palm jumeira. it's a bit of a hassle to get down on to the rocks, and i believe not technically permissible, but the sun was going down and i had to wet a line, so over the wall we went. threw the pencil popper for a few hits, one a good size one. still having problems hooking up. these don't seem to be very big, but probably acceptable-sized fish. they just aren't nailing the popper and getting hooked. i am trying my old striped bass tactics of pausing for a few moments after the missed hit, then thrashing around again as a stunned/wounded fish coming back to life (deadly on the stripers), but that does not seem to be inducing a second strike. so, skunked again! anyone catching anything????

Those of you looking for good deals on "Fireline XDS" can go and visit Sea Star at Al Ras. Picked up a few from the shop only at AED100/spool of 270m or about 300yds. Other shops selling at AED150 each.

The Fireline XDS is super thin for its weight rating. The 59kgs is much thinner than the 40kgs Rapala Titanium braid....and also super smooth/slick.

Cheers!

went out yesterday later afternoon to the jumeira beach - further north than the dubai sailing club where it turns out there have been repeated discharges of raw sewage of late. really too bad as it is a great little spot. anyway, went to the main beach area that has the large pedestrian jetties with circular ends and side jetties extending out. had frustrating tackle problems - i hooked up again to a nice fish on the hopkins and again had a break off. just looked like the line split, and it was neither from rocks nor the fish mouth as it was too far up the line. later i had a break off just from casting, leading me to conclude i was sold a very low-quality spool of mono by the barracuda folks. i did not trust the tackle any more and stopped fishing. i picked up a spool of fireline and i'm going to spool up with it and be done with it. i was dumb just not to have done so in the first place - wasting a whole lot of $ to save a little.

after stopping and joining my wife on the beach, later noticed a school of baitfish getting slammed by something about 20m from shore - the bait was skipping out of the water at a very fast clip! anyway, count me 0-for-3 so far - hopefully i will break through soon and land something. peace!

As far as fishing gears are concerned, Knotika is being supplied by Barracuda. This is what I had gathered through my conversation with the owner of Barracuda. This probably explains the reason why you will see "almost" the same range/selection of stuff between these two shops. :-)

Tuesday sunset fish report.

Fished from 4:30-6:30, nice conditions. Onshore wind, not too bad. Fished again around Dubai sailing club beach area. Early on was throwing a storm wildeye soft plastic lure - it got nailed but unfortunately bitten in half. Downside of these lures when toothy fish are present.

Switched to the pencil popper at sunset and had it tail-slapped violently twice, a couple of more times there were boils around it. Did not hook up. Went to the Hopkins with green bucktail on the hook for nothing as the sun went down. Back at it again tomorrow!

Hi Hatem,

Considering that the water is less there, please make sure that you go at hightide. I would suggest a time in the afternoon when its high tide time.

As my trip would not only focus on that spot so I have decided to go early morning even though the water tide would be low. But we would try out other spots in UAQ as well.

Let hope we get something good.

Hi Amir

I'm going there this coming Saturday, going to test the area and se what is there. going to focus on spinning and flyfishing due to the water level. Saw some barracuda in the area, some of them of quite a large size. The last time i went to the spot the guys with the boats where out at sea, i did not wait around to get any contact details gonna try this weekend.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'd be a bit surprised if it were a ray given that the break off seemed pretty clearly to be from a teethy fish, but who the heck knows - my mission is to return tomorrow at dawn and catch whatever it was, retrieving also my Hopkins lure :-).

Thanks Ramzi for the tip on the Al Ras location where there are quite a few small shops with tackle, lures, etc. Have to say that while selection is spotty, price is much better than barracuda. less negotiation room but a lower price in the end. the second shop in from the post office seemed the best to me - the only place where i could find fluorocarbon leader.

on poppers: i am a fanatic user of them back home. i've thrown in a pic below of what i caught at daybreak on nov. 3, election day in the usa. it's a striped bass of about 18lb/32". that was caught near JFK airport. sorry for small pic, they reject anything bigger than 500x500 pixels. afterward i went back to my home in brooklyn, dropped off the fish, and voted for obama. it was a great day! cheers.

nice striped bass

Joshua,

With the right "presentation", pencil floaters/poppers should be able to attract few of the "highly" aggressive predatory fish in these waters e.g Kingfish, Queenfish, Barracuda etc.

In the East Coast e.g Fujairah/Mussandam/Dibba where the water is much deeper, with the right conditions one can expect to even get hits from GTs and sharks.

Cheers!

I saw two boats standing there when i went there but forgot to get the number.

Have you got any things from the small jetty there as I noticed the water level very low. Will there be any good fishing.

thinking of a trip there.

Well guys, I tried our little spot in Jumeira at sunset. Started out with a pencil popper - q: what kinds of local fish will rise to the pencil? No hits.

Went to the Hopkins below the surface and something pretty large took it hard. It was a steady, stubborn fighter. no big runs, it just stayed down there and moved slowly out toward sea. it was hard to pick up line, and i was being conservative because i am with 12lb mono and did not have a leader tied -- they did not have any at barracuda (what's up with that - basic piece of terminal tackle?). anyway, i eventually got bit off - frustrating! should have doubled the line...

any thoughts as to what this species would be? my hopeful guess is hamour given the teeth, and i have caught barracuda before which fight like crazy so did not think it was that...

also, anyone have a better tackle shop suggestion than barracuda in deira? they had a good lure/plug selection but the guy there was not knowledgeable and i really need some terminal tackle... Cheers!

Went to Salam corniche last Friday but was not quite a good day for us. Within 4-5 hours of patiently waiting under the sun for a bite, felt nothing. Only one of my friends was able to land a striped "cobia-like" species.

Hi Adam, Is this the same with the one you caught recently from Mina port?

Hello,
Guys, I have a question to ask for those who are from India or been there, I just learned that I'll be spending 3 to 4 week in Mumbai during Jan 2009. How is the fishing there? anyone aware of head Boats or good priced charters? what kind of Gear is best to be used ? Availability of tackle? is it worth to carry my gear or I can buy something from there?
Thanks for you help.

Hi Josh,

Welcome to the forum!

Few of the best shore fishing spots are as follows;

1) The breakwater structure near the open beach at Jumeirah.....the junction is just after afew hundred meters after Al-Hamour Marine

2) Near the Sheraton at the Marina.

3) Opposite Kempinski Hotel in Ajman

With the proper bait/lures and luck, one can expect to yank up Hamour, rays, Queenfish as well as Kingfish....not to mention barracudas aka "rats" or "pests" of the sea ... as mention by some forum members.

There are also breams, mullet, half beaks, needle fish, black dotted/spotted snapper as well as spangled emperor...locally known as Sheari......plus few other species.

Happy Fishing!

Ciao!

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you have a good set up so far and there are plenty of the forum readers based in Dubai and i'm sure they wil be able to give you some pointers. Also take a look through the many posts on here which mention a lot of the good spots to fish.

I am based in Abu Dhabi and fish on the weekends only (usually Friday) you would be most welcome to join me if you venture up this way.

Do let me know and i'll give you my mobile/cell number.

Tight lines.

Hi folks-

I am a new poster here - I am married to a UAE national, we live in NYC but come to visit family relatively often. We avidly fish for striped bass and other species in our home waters, and I have started reading up on the local shore fishing scene, which seems pretty good! You guys have some great species around and everyone seems very active...

So, I went over to Barracuda and picked up a 7' spinning rod/reel combo for local use. I am a plug/lure fisherman, and only picked up a few lures to get started - a pencil popper, a medium diving Storm lure (both blue-ish), and a Hopkins...

I'm hoping to target tasty-eating gamefish species like kingfish, hamour, and bonito, but really haven't a clue on spots and methods to get these species with any reliability. I'm not looking to "spot burn" and am ready to put in my time exploring -- this is a sensitive spot back home, where relatively unknown local spots are few and people guard them jealously! I'm just looking for some general tips regarding these species if anyone would care to share. I.e., best tides/times (sunrise vs. sunset vs. dark), general known locations, etc. I am first planning to hit the Jumeira area, since we are located there. I have scouted the Dubai Sailing Club area, which has some nice structure, sand meeting jetty/rock, etc., and am going to try there first. I'll send a report out to let you know how I do.

Tight lines everyone - Josh

Hi Bart. Below is an extract from the Gulf News on 7th Nov 08:

Robert Culp, Recreation Manager at Fujairah Rotana Resort and Spa, said the situation yesterday was much better than the last few days, adding that he expects the water to clear up in a day or two.

Oxygen depletion

He said: "Much of the problem has now passed, thankfully, and already things are looking up but you can understand the reaction of some visitors who were naturally concerned at the change in sea colour."

Municipality officials, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Environment and Water and local fishermen's representatives met this week to discuss the "red tide" occurrence which has blighted some parts of the East Coast.

The problem was coming to an end, officials said, pointing to a noticeable reduction of dead fish washing up on the shores.

Officials said this year's occurrence was one of the largest they have seen in many years resulting in the death of hundreds of tonnes of fish

Amir

Hello Syed,

that was a good catch, considering not many caught anything substantial during the past week.

A double hookup of hamour is very very rare. The only good thing is that while fighting them , they are more like dead weight as they try & pull against each other & in different directions.
But, it still is difficult landing one of them on light tackle, for two, its a good show. Congratulations on your catch.

Shahzad and I went to Dibba, got a boat rather late and were off at around 9:30ish. As everywhere on that side oof the coast, we were also plagued with red tide. Saw very little surface activity, so resorted to bait fishing, and had a ball of a time! Got lots of goatfish, a few breams, a 1-1/2 kg leather jacket, a puny little Bombay duck and 4 hamour, 3 of them in the 3 kg range on light graphite rods - Man, you need to experience a double hookup of hamour in 2.5 to 3 kg range on such rods, to really enjoy this wonderful sport!

We could have had much better results had we not wasted a lot of time trolling.

Sorry guys, no pics; we both were too busy getting fish up from about 50 metres down

Cheers,
Ijlal

Red tides – more accurately known as algal blooms, since they are not really a tidal phenomenon – often happen at around this time of year off the coasts of Oman. In some years tens of tonnes of dead fish have washed up on Omani shores.
At Muscat and the Batinah region of Oman, the scores of dead fish that have collected on the beach have all accumulated toxins, making them unsafe.

The Middle East’s shores are not alone in experiencing red tides. Off the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico the tides are caused by a species of dinoflagellate called Karenia brevis. It is here that Dr Gabriel Vargo, an emeritus associate professor at the University of South Florida, has studied the phenomenon for more than a generation.
Just as red tides, which are also seen in freshwater environments, come in a variety of colours, they have a number of causes.
Commonly, they result from seasonal upwelling from the sea floor. This brings nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates to the water’s surface, which allows formerly low populations of the single-celled organisms to multiply.

The microscopic creatures that cause red tides are always present in the oceans, but only when their population density reaches a certain critical mass, about one million cells per litre, does the water become discoloured.
“Many red tides start when the summer heat or increased sunlight causes an increase in the temperature of the surface layer of the water.Typically, waters may remain discoloured for two to three months, but a few years ago in Florida Dr Vargo and his colleagues observed a red tide that persisted into the following winter, spring and summer, lasting 14 months.
Red tides are not just hazardous to marine life: humans can also suffer through respiratory problems and skin irritation swimming in affected areas. And the risks are not limited to people on the beach or in the water.

“In many cases, you wouldn’t be able to ingest enough cells to become sick, but in some cases, depending on the species, the toxin can be released into the water and become aerosolised.
“Waves breaking and bubbles, they inject particles into the air that contain toxins. You can then breathe them in. In those instances, you might be half a mile from the beach and have a reaction to the toxins.”

Aside from cleaning up the oceans there have been effective ways to reduce the outbreaks. Coastal areas of China, Japan and Korea, where fish is a main staple, have all succesfully suppressed the tides using clay to protect their fishing industries. Clay particles attach to the micro-organisms and sink to the sea bed, killing the tiny organisms. Tests have also taken place in the United States of simmilar procedures, where eliminating red tides would prevent losses to fishermen and ensure that beaches popular with tourists can remain open.

Due to the change in weather / water conditions / temperature etc, there is an algae bloom (algae multiplies very rapidly) & releases toxins in the water which uses up the oxygen in the water. Due to lack of oxygen, fish suffocate. This is a yearly phenomenon & quite common. Algae is either green or reddish brown, hence the term red tide which actually has nothing to do with the tide.

Great work from you guys!

Matthew,

Awsome catch and some excercise at the same time! What could be better. Looking forward to seeing more next week!

I was down in Fujeirah last week and the red tide was a joke! Not the best time for fishing hence only got a small 3kg cuda on a red/white yo-zuri. Still managed to get a tan though haha.

Had fantastic morning fishing off the kayak at Khor Najd in Mussandam.
The red tide is terrible, and the water is like pea soup, but I still managed to pick up an awesome couta (king mackerel) on my trusty red and white storm lure. It was a little smaller than the one I caught two weeks ago, but it was a much better fight. I make it about 1 metre 10 cm, and about 4 - 5 kg. These things are bloody addictive!!!

Also got a medium sized barracuda, and a nice sized blue spotted grouped. Caught a snapper and two medium sized yellow spot trevally on a small silver spoon on the small rod. All fish returned to fight another day!

As I moved up the khor, the water cleared up, and I was surprised by the amount of sea life around. Fish everywhere, rays and the most stunning rock formations. Definitely want to go back there soon when this tide clears. Reckon there are some bus fish in the area.
Gareth fished off my surfski, and lost a large fish on fly. He also caught a small GT and saw a + / - 20 kg GT swim directly under his boat.

This kayak fishing vibe is just awesome.

Saw a lot of activity around khasab too, and wouldn't mind giving it a bash there soon as well.

2nd couta of the month on a kayak....stoked!!!
Beautiful
Beautiful colours on this fish!!!!

Hi Abdul/Amir

I went to Mina with Mohammed but we caught only a few tiny morsels one of which was a sultan ibrahim which went straight back onto a larger hook in the hope for some larger prey.

Sadly the only thing i caught was a sun tan :-)
