Adam, Nice to hear(read rather..) about some actions on your side. The waves and winds are horribly bad nowadays thus most fishing charters are not willing to venture out to sea. Cheers! |

Hi Amir A few of my work buddies and me went out shore fishing here in Abu Dhabi on Friday afternoon from 2pm- 6pm near to Musafah. Quite a lot of waves due to the wind and there was plenty of surface action with some kings chasing small fish to the top. We managed to catch 4 breams only and 1 small flathead between us but many, many takes which were again breams. These fish like to nibble at your baits and you have to be quick to hook them. I will be venturing out to Marina Mall this Friday to try out my fly fishing tackle. Cheers. Adam |

CJ, this is unfortunately not a weekend trip. The drive is 1000km there and 1000km back, so you need at least 4 or 5 days to make it worth it. The closest town is Ras Madrakah, half way between Muscat and Salalah. Beefy |

Dear Troller Please let me apologize. I didn't realize that Troller was your real name. I guess i assumed which was wrong of me to do so that some of the guys posting on here have a "Nick name" and i assumed Troller was yours. Again i apologise and did not mean anything by that so please don't take any offense from me. I am not like this at all. Would be good to head out to Mussandam with you, let's make a point to do so after the holidays. What is your mobile number so i can call you? Adam |

Hi Troller, There are some small motors available in Dragon Mart Dubai and the price ranges from AED 800-1500. They are of about 2-2.5 horse power and have speed of around 15-20 kph. but i think they are not electric motors, they rund by fuel. regards amir |

Anyway, let me know if you head up to Mussandam, i keep hearing so much about this place that i also want to visit there and after the holidays are out of the way. Would be good to catch up. Appears to be more fish activity up that way. Ritch, thanks for clarifying, my mouth is still watering anyways.... I'll have a go at those fly patterns!! Cheers. Adam |

Quick clarification - the bluefish were NOT caught on fly but on Yozuri metal sardines. As I said in an earlier post, I've only flyfished Fujairah here. I put the fly pic in just to illustrate what the clousers look like for Adam. Then decided to add the bluefish pics from last week as have never been able to load any pics here before, so thought I'd do "2 posts for the price of one." Sorry for the confusion. Tackle for the bluefish was a 10' Penn Firestick Rod (12 - 15lb class I reckon, sorry not sure), 12lb mono line, 60g Yozuri metal sardine. The beach was open with no snags, so I'm sure you could go lighter than this if you wanted. |

Rich Nice catch. Just wondering what is the line rating for your rod and reel? I only brought line rating 8 rod with me maybe combine it with a reel size 11/12, will it be enough for the kind of fish you caught? I just cannot wait to get my fly fishing gears wet again. Might try my luck at Mamzar, Sharjah using similiar flies like yours this weekend. Hope to catch some fish, not bystanders. Ta Philip |

Cracking Bluefish Richie, i heard that they shoal up in the bays down in Oman in the winter time. They look awesome sport on light tackle or fly. Yes Adam, i will be keen to do a days Yaking with you in the New Year. I am itching to get up to the Musandam but would like the electric motor option before then and maybe tackle it over two days as it is a long way up for one day. |

Rami, Thanks for the advise. NEVER expected that the more worn out the lures are....the more efeective they become. Could it be that they will look more injured/incapicitated thus more enticing to the predatory fishes? All these while I was under the impression that as the lures loses their gleaming/shiny colour/finishes they will become less attractive/productive. Thanks again for the enlightenment. Cheers! Ok blue jig.....back to work! |

Hi Abdul (Jigwrex), Looking at your jig, I wouldn't retire it until it's lost by a fish. The reason why I am telling you that is based on experience, the older the lure looks and how badly it's beaten the better it sticks out among the rest. My trolling lures, I get far more hits on the old and beaten than the new one ( same brand and color and size) old onse looks more like a wounded fish than a new one. One other thing, If you still want to retire the jig, you can send it my way.LOL Take care |

Thanks Ritchie I will PM you for some more details. Ahhhh Troller, you are the guy that bought the kayak off Dom. I was using his kayak that i mention in my post. I agree and was also looking at a way to get a light engine on a kayak. Not lazy at all, just a more savvy way of fishing and much more cost effective than shelling out for a boat what with the cost of storage and maintenance in these parts of the world if you are not using the boat regularly. Will try and catch up with you at some point as you are based in Dubai. Cheers. Adam |

Nice one Ritchie - RAK it is then i will give it a go on Friday and see what i can catch. Adam, i got a double seater Kayak of Don Revis - Gemini model. My wife quite likes the idea of Going Yaking and i used to fish froma yak quite alot when i lived in Oz. I also got the pod which fits on the back which has extra storage space and two rod holders. I suspect my wife may lose interest soon and when that happens i will sell my current yak and look at one with a rudder system as i want to attach a small electric motor for trolling with. It may sound lazy and probably is, but you can get a range of some 20 miles out of these small motors, they are silent and push you along at an excellent trolling speed. In the mean time, i am looking forward to having a crack at the flatheads on Friday. ps - i live in Dubai |

Thanks for the pic Mohd...aka Monster Minnow. I am officially putting that jig to retirement now. ....only after 4 trips! Well worth the price paid! Hoping that the green one will be as productive.......can't wait for the next trip. Suli, The most effective colors for those Rapala and Yozuri lures are the greenish and bluish reflective ones. This is due to the considerably cystal clear water here. Others had testified on the effectiveness of "red heads" but personally haven't had much success with such colour till now....for some unobvious reason(s). This is from my own personal experiences. Ciao! |

Hi Philip/Adam Fly fishing here - only done it once, East Coast, had small kawa kawa tuna and queenfish, great fun on my 7WT trout rod! Other buddies go more often, generally use clousers, though I'm sure any baitfish pattern would be quite successful. A buddy ties them (very well I might add), I haven't tied a fly in 20 years!! If you're interested,PM me and I can ask him to tie them for you (reasonable prices). re: Kayaks, here in Dubai, Picnico sells Wilderness Systems Tarpons (like mine) and various outlets sell Malibus. The Malibus are excellent, a wholesaler sells them cheaper than the shops in Al Quoz, if you need his number PM me. |

Hi guys Thanks Amir for the feed back on my trolling experience, hadn't thought about the current playing a factor in the zero result. Troller, where are you living in the UAE? In Abu Dhabi? Would be good to meet up and go fishing? We have been catching a few of the smaller size flat heads in Abu Dhabi and i have to admnit we have been throwing them back thinking they wouldn't make good eating fish. Will definately have to reconsider and keep a couple for the pan next time. Where did you get your Kayak from? what brand is it? I am looking at purchasing one now and curious to get some feed back off experienced kayakers that can recommend things to look out for when purchasing one. My Dad was just over from the UK and we were serious fly fishermen for Trout and Salmon in the UK. He brought some fly fishing gear over and i tried fishing in and around Abu Dhabi but again, no success. I can tie my own flys and have the gear here in the UAE to do it. Could anyone post some pics of successful flys that are catching in the UAE, Ritchie, you mentioned fly fishing in your post, what are you using normally? I was thinking to order a set of salt water flys from Cabella's and then just copy the patterns. Cheers. Adam |

Hi All! Not posted for a while as had password problems! Troller - re: your qs re: flatheads, as Philip says, there are lots of bartail flatheads in RAK and yes, they are the species in the photo. And yes, they are excellent eating!!! Haven't fished RAK since the summer, but had a lot of flathead off the kayak trolling small lures. Buddy caught them baitfishing too. Fished around various breakwaters there, new coastguard station area is a good spot. However, there are tons of small barracuda round there that can be a bit of a pain as they hit every lure in the water!! PM me for more details if you like! I think flyfishing for these flathead would be a riot - as they do in Oz: http://www.fishnet.com.au/flyswap/articles/estuaryflathead.html Tight lines! Best Richie |

Troller It was from a breakwater. I think you will need 4W drive to get to it because there is no proper access to it. I used fresh sardines and squids on 'one up one down rig' (hook size 1/0). I used 14ft medium action beachcaster with a high speed retriever reel because as you know snagging problems of fishing off breakwater. Ta Philip |

Yes Abdul, You are right about the current. yesterday managed to wet my line in the creek opposite to the Diera gold souk. But the current was very strong, size 5 sinkers also could not withstand the current flow. I guess only considering the full moon does not results in good catching. The current & wind flows would also have to be given due consideration before deciding on a sutiable day. regards amir |

Went out boat fishing from Sharjah with a few friends on Saturday from 3pm. Sea was VERY VERY choppy....luckily most of us popped the seasickness pills prior to the trip Few of our rods god damaged due to being squashed by the cool boxes due to the bumpy ride. The first spot only yielded few barracudas through jigging. Moved to the second spot but the sea current was getting faster. Managed to get few breams only. Moved to the third spot, the current was getting ridiculously strong.....even with 2piece of size 7 sinkers we were not able to touch bottom. Lines got entangled very frequently and only managed to catch few catfish. Then decided to headback to shore. Ciao! |

Hi Guys, I too went Kayak fishing last weekend down south of Abu Dhabi, near Tarif. I had some good sport trawling a small 'muppet' in the shallows as it was getting dark - all Needlefish. The next morning i set out again and the highlight was catching a Flathead. I have not caught a Flathead since i lived in Australia and did not know they were found in these waters. Has anybody else caught any Flathead? if so where. I am really going to target this species as they are fantastic to eat and good fishing on light tackle. Going to take the yak out off Ajman on Friday and see what is going about up there - hopefully some more Flathead!! |

Suli, Personally I think the nationalities are not the main issues of those shop assistants. Most importantly.....tackle shop hands/assistants should be fishermen themselves. HOWEVER......,if they are fishermen...they wouldn't be in those shops....would they????? True....most of them don't even know the purpose of most of the stuff they are selling. Unlike back home, all of the tackle shop owners and assistants are serious anglers thus had been quite helpful in guiding us for the right gears for the species we plan to target. Additionally most of the stuff are from mid-high end mostly Japanese brands of fishing gears. Ciao! |

Well folks, i've been meaning to try it for a while now and finally got to have a go at Kayak Fishing here in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Sadly i didn't hook into anything from the spot we were at but my dad who was here on vacation from England caught 3 medium sized sea breams on squid bottom fishing. I tried trawling and bottom fishing from the Kayak but to no success. There was a reasonably strong head wind and no surface action for me to trawl through which didn't help. Highlight of the day was when i tried to turn around whilst sat in the kayak to grab my rod and then i turned to quickly and went overboard. I paniced for a second but then saw the funny side and got myself back into the kayak and soon dried off in the heat. All in all a great day out and if anyone fancies trying this out then check my out my earlier post with the contact details of Dom who is selling these and also hiring them out for the day. I will definately be having another go at this and will hopefully have some nice pics like that of Beefy Bovril to share with you all. Cheers Adam |

Pics of the badly injured 80g blue jig
Suli, As can be seen from the pic, I tied my assist hooks to a solid ring and then connect it to the jig using a split ring. The leader is connected to the solid ring either directly or by a good quality swivel and snap-lock. I had been dissapointed more than once by most of the swivel snap-locks locally available here thus I only used those which I got from back home in Brunei.....very solid/sturdy for their size. The assist hooks are either tied to a knotted/braided 250lbs braid or kevlar/dynema assist string(if available). Cheers! |

Hi Abdul, I check the internet and the local name Kana'd is generally used for both Spanish Makeral and Kingfish. regards Amir |

Amir, Mmmmmmmm, interesting....... As I am considerably quite new to sea fishing, never realised that the fish I kept on calling "kingfish" is not a kingfish. Would highly appreciate if someone could explain how to distinguish between the two? Ciao! |

1st of all ,thanx for the warm welcome abdul, didnt feel that i am new to the forum, and thanx too for the tips provided, they are helpful indeed,as for the fish targeted i got ur point ,but it would be helpful if i get pictures like in a site where i can see the colors and sizes and how to install the hooks on them ,,,coz as u know most shops here are run by indians as employees and most of them cant tell what bait goes for what fish second the names of fish here differ so i am finding a hard job in tagging the local name of the fish to the english name thatnx for the patience |

Sulieman & Andrea.....Welcome to the forum! Hi Suli, As for Barracudas, you should not have a problem in catching them....if they are there. These are pests thus even if you don't want to target them U'll end up catching lots of them! All it takes are highly reflective & wiggling lures which kind of mimic either wounded or panicky bait fish. I had been able to take out more than 20 good sized barracudas by using jigs....within the last 01mth period. I will soon be putting my favourite jig to retirement as it had been "injured" very badly......with teeth marks all over it. Additionally, The presentation or the jigging action need to be a bit on the fast side. You can also target kingfish this way. Others had reported to be quite successful by casting those rapala or yo-zuri either topwater or shallow depth minnows but honestly speaking, I still yet to acquire the art of distance casting those lures. I only had success with trolling those mid depth plastic minnow lures. Cheers! |

Hi Strim, There are plenty of spots in dubai, but it depends what good spots mean to you as the catch and the size of the fish varies from time to time. You could try the below areas. 1- Under makhtoum bridge 2- Jumeira breakwaters (opposite Dubai Zoo) 3- Marina Dubai Breakwaters (near Sheraton Marina) 4 - Mamzer area 5 - Area infront of Deira Gold souk Of what I have heared is that License is required to fish in every emirate and each emirate has its own fishing license whcih is not applicable in the other emirate. However, except of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the other emirates do not spend time & efforts in checking anglers for the license. regards Amir |

Guys, Got few stuff I want to clear.....to make way for new ones!...he..he..he... 1. The "original" Fireline thermal filament fishing line - 500yds spool of 30lbs rating. Bought for AED250....selling for AED150. 2. Plano (hard) rod tube. 4.5in diameter and fully extendable upto 8.5ft. (Might not be able to fit spinning rods with large guides but will accomodate several conventional rods). Very useful in transporting rods especially in aircrafts......as the baggage handlers are usually quite rough! Bought for AED250...(also) expecting AED150.
Popping rod Brand Ajiking - PE8(80lbs) Length - 7ft 6in Colour - Black with red windings and gunmetal guides Condition - Used with slight scratches. This rod had been tested and proven to be able to handle GTs up to 45kgs.....in Mussandam. In the picture, the rod was mated with Stella 20000FA handling a 30+kgs GT in the first picture and in the second one, a 40+kgs GT. With the drag being set at about 15Kgs!!!!! Bought 10months back @AED550. Selling for AED300 or nearest offer.
Can either call me on +971505528348 or e-mail me at csalatifa@rba.com.bn. Ciao! |

Guys, Please find the pics of a jig which had been very productive for me. The blue one is no longer as photogenic as had been getting hits from kingfish and barracuda. I used two assist hooks, one at each side...similar to the butterfly jig system from Shimano. Got the size 4/0 assist hooks either tied to kevlar string or braided 250lbs braid. top view showing the angular shape, flat at one side.
side view The nearest thing I could find here to this jig is the Duel/Yo-Zuri "TAMENTAL" polyhedron metal jig.
Cheers! |

Hi Philip Welcome to the forum and the UAE!! There is good fishing available by boat from Sharjah. Me, Abdul, Kim, Mohammed and Khaled were out last Friday and we had a respectable trip with many vareities of fish being caught, barracudas, hamours, trevalli, sherri's etc. Check on the forum here for some numbers Abdul posted up about a week ago. Some of the guys that live near to Dubai or even in Sharjah will not doubt be happy for you to meet up with them. Unfortunately, i live in Abu Dhabi otherwise i would have met up with you. If you venture up this way at some point then do give me a shout. There are always plenty of boat trips being organised in and out of Dubai,Sharjah and Abu Dhabi so watch the forum for updates. Tight lines. Adam |

Abdul, Looks like Mohd and Team Abdul are using smaller rods and baitcasting reels for local jigging. 60g outfit. I just finish one with 25lbs line class jigging rod. I need to get it going into the sea. OMG! the kings are waiting. Fishpals |

My favourite ones are the Japanese "side-weighed" polyhedron type which weighs 80gms. Can't remember the name though but costs quite high, about AED45 each....without the assist hooks! Got a few of those in different colours but the most productive one is the blue colour which got me those barracudas and kingfishes. There are lots of cheap jigs available here BUT haven't had much luck with them as the swimming actions are not as good...I think! Ciao! |
