Thanks Abdul for that write up. I also picked up another shimano having fallen in love with the 4000 stradic you got me! It's a shimano exage 4000 RA reel for spinning. Looking forward to trying these bad boys out when i get back. As i write this note, it's snowing here outside here in England... Cheers. Adam |

Jay/Adam, Just incase if U guys haven't knew these facts already on the Okuma V system reels; 1) V55a - the a behind the number indicates that its the second(latest/current) model. without the a will mean that its the first model...produced in 2006 or earlier. 2) V55S - the S indicates that its the high speed version....high gear ratio designed for popping and high speed jigging. 3) V55Sa - The S and a indicates that its the current model having a high gear ratio. 4) Additionally, in some large models (80,65)there will be an extra handle shaft included in the box. This is due to the fact that each of the shaft can only be used for either left or right handle operation otherwise the cranking will loosen the handle if the wrong shaft is used. 5) An extra spool (exactly similar to the first one) is also included. These are quite a good "value for money" reels. Almost picked one of these up.....till I set my eyes on the Shimano Stellas (10000FA and 20000FA)...... which made me dig deep into my pockets Ciao! |

Hi Marc I will be in the UAE during this time and i'm off on the weekends (Fri/Sat) We are going out fishing from the shore/boat/Yak every weekend so would be happy to meet up with you in Abu Dhabi or if some of the guys on here are organizing a trip out of Dubai, you would be welcome to join us. If you are into your fishing, you will probably like using your own tackle. My opinion only but i would recommend you bring your own rod/reel(that's if they are travel size for example or unless you don't mind paying the excess luggage weight etc) Lures and weights etc you can buy here and are in plenty. Alternatively you can buy tackle here although it's limited in choice and i find the prices higher than in the UK. Happy for you to private message me on adamharvey14@hotmail.com if you want anymore quaestions answered. Cheers. Adam |

Jay I am in the UK right now flying back to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. I have just picked up a multiplier Okuma Magnetix MG-20LS. I will be trying it out when i get back on the boat. Did you get the V55 locally? Is the V55 one of the latest models as i will see if they have it here if you like and tell you the price. Cheers. Adam |

Hi Gregor Thanks for the tips on Yak fishing. I do appreciate any advice i get and it's good to get different points of view. I can really see your point of view on letting the bait run rather than just sit there. I'll have to try that out. I am in England right now(stocking up on tackle) and it's bl**dy freezing... |

Hello Gents, Wondering if one of you guys could give me some advise. I visiting Dubai from March 6-12th for a holiday and looking to do some fishing, preferably on a charter for a mix of trolling for sails and also some general lure fishing for barra, gt, kings etc. I am also up for Kayak fishing with lure or fly. Can anyone recommend charters or know of any that are going out that week which I could join. Or if anyone feels generous enough to let me join yourself on a trip the company would be welcome. Is it advisable to bring your own tackle or is equipment easy enough to hire? Any help is appreciated. |

Hi Adam, Just a few thoughts for you after reading your last two posts. This is purely my point of view and from my experience so take of it what you will. My first observation would be that i only ever use enough weight to reach the bottom. if the sea is calm and there is little tide running, i will use split shot, if the tide is running and the current strong i will use a drilled bullet sinker very rarely more than 1 - 1.5 oz - usually on a running ledger rig. I think the whole concept of yak fishing is being able to fish 'on the move'. I have never used an anchor and always fish on the drift. I usually fish with whole shrimp. The speed the yak drifts at coupled with the weight of the sinker should bounce the bait either on the bottom or a meter or so off the bottom. This does two things; firstly it presents the bait in a natural way and gives the shrimp 'life' - not just an unnatural strip of motionles squid suspended in mid-water. Secondly, it lets you cover alot more ground and find where the fish are - a moving lifelike bait will enduce a feeding reaction. As i said, this is only my thoughts and i do think that a 5oz and certainly a 10oz sinker is way to much also try fishing on the drift. Good luck this weekend! |

Hi Jay, For Okuma reels, go to the official distributor/dealer which is Al Fajar Marine @Al Ras. Their prices are quite good compared to those in the states. Otherwise for even cheaper deals on Okuma reels, get them from Malaysia. Cheers! |

Hi Mameth I started fishing from the Yak in December so only 2 months now but have been going out every weekend with a group of guys here in Abu Dhabi. We have been trying various spots here and i've yet to land a big fish on the yak which is what i'm eagerly trying to achieve!! I just enjoy getting out in the open though and paddling around which is equally as fun as also the fitness you gain from it. Please do let me know how you get on. I've just started keeping a blog of my fishing trips now at : http://fishinguae.wordpress.com |

Hi Mameth You are welcome to join me and the guys in Abu Dhabi anytime. How are you fidning the Malibu Yak? I've heard good things about them. Did you Yak fish before or is this your first time? I think if you read back through Troller's posts on here, he fishs in and around Dubai. You could also try a google search. Tight lines Adam http://fishinguae.wordpress.com |

Hi guys, Can someone please update me with a good fishing spot anywhere in the UAE where I can have some fun hooking and releasing silver breams like the one Adam caught on his Kayak below. I just bought a new combo ultra light Shakespeare rod and reel with 6 pound line from Sun & Sand sports at Festival city on DSF discounts original price AED 230, I got it for AED 150/- They also have a Penn graphite medium action casting rod for around the same price. Go grab yourself one while the price lasts. Cheers guys, some updates would be much appreciated. Ash ashleykenneth@gmail.com |

Headed out from Salam Street on Friday morning by kayak with Don from www.kayakabudhabi.com and a new fishing buddy Stewart. Off we set into the beautiful blue waters. As we were going to be paddling for at least 35 minutes non stop to our fishing ground, we decided to troll some lures behind us from the kayak. After 5 minutes of trolling......BANG!! my line snapped, now either it was a fish that struck and my knots were not good, it caught on the bottom or it was the idiot that just drove his speed boat right across my stern. I think the latter was the main reason. So, i rigged up another lure and we all carried on to our destination fishing ground. During the 35 minutes paddling, none of us hooked into any fish so we paddled into the mangroves so Don could show us around the site he takes his tour groups through(Please note we did not fish in the mangroves as this is prohibited). The mangroves are so beautiful and when you live and work in the city, sometimes you get sucked into the rush and buzz and forget that there is another world out there in nature, a world that is living and breeding animals from insects to fish to birds etc etc. Once inside the mangroves area, you forget you are in Abu Dhabi, it feels more like the Amazon and at any moment you might see a crocodile or a hippo....seriously now...!! The one sad thing about the mangroves and something that Don really works hard on educating people about is taking home their litter. There is a huge educational process needed (as we've all no doubt experienced) out in the UAE for people to put their rubbish in the bin otherwise one of the poor animals/fish ends up eating it and dying or it get's trapped around a birds foot! After the mangroves, i decided to head back out to a spot we past on the way, the water appeared darker there i noticed which usually indicates it's deeper. I changed rigs from my lure set up to a 3 hook trace, using small hooks and a 5 oz lead weight. I was using shrimp as bait. I dropped the anchor and cast my line a few feet from the boat. After 20 minutes i began to feel little twitches on the end of the rod, I prepared myself for the strike and lifted the rod sharply to hook the fish. I could feel i had hooked it and began reeling. By the lack of any fight back, i knew it was small and sure enough, you could put this fish quite easily into your aquarium(seem to be catching many of these lately) at home : This was all that was caught at our first spot. The morning soon past and we decided to head back and try one last spot before we called it a day. On the way out we past what looked like an oil pipe but i was actually later corrected and informed it was a pipe used to dredge sand and it's purpose was to pump it to a destination and then spit it out to form an island. Anyway, we paddled right upto this pipe and dropped the anchors. It was reasonably deep due to the pipe being there and again using the same rig set up, we sat and waited with 3 rods in the water. All was quiet for 10 minutes then again the twitches began and bang i was into a fish, this time the fight was much better and after a minute or so i reeled in my first Sea bream caught on a kayak and my kayak fishing blank was finally broken!! after unhooking the fish, i decided to keep it for the frying pan and then after rigging up another shrimp bait i cast again into the same spot, meanwhile i heard a loud shout of joy and when i turned around, Don had hooked 3 fish all in one go!! 3 sea breams, i guess macdonalds would call it a bream combo..."want fries with that"!! Next was Stewarts turn and he also hooked a bream and we then began to think we had hit the spot. Unfortunately it was late in the day now and we decided to head back to the shore, the wind was picking up but the kayaks cut through the water nicely and we were soon safe and sound on dry land. All in all a pleasurable morning and i realised why it is we get up at what some people would call a ridiculous time of morning on a weekend to go fishing! Cheers. Adam

Hi Bart, Got mine from Brunei for about AED40each for the 80gm, without any assist hooks. From what I knew from Mohammed who was in Kuala Lumpur few weeks back, it was only about AED30-35 each there. The closest thing to that jig is the Duel "TAMENTAL" (polyhedron) jig...which is sometime available here.....at Sea Star and Al Fajar Marine. Cheers! |

Amir, Haven't been doing much of trolling so can't comment much but usually the lure colours and swimming depths are depending upon the baitfish in the locality and the fishes being targetted. BTW, just got to know the name of those jigs which had been very productive for me. Its BAKUTYO jig from JAZZ. http://www.jazz-lure.com/frame_topics2.html Ciao! |

Hi Amir yes mate, i did go shore fishing over the weekend. My post was below. Not much success i'm afraid, there seems to be a lot of seaweed around right now which is a pian in the a**! Hi Gregor Shame about your trip and not being able to get out. Seems you are getting full usage of your kayak. Never been fishing at night from one. Where did you get your booms from? I am visiting the UK at the end of this month for 4 days so plan to stock up on a few bits and pieces i can't get here. The mangroves out here in Abu Dhabi would make awsome fly fishing fishing but apparently it's not allowed there. Don Revis has promised to take me on a tour round there so will have to do a reccy and see what action there is by paddling through. PS, the Marlin pictures never showed up in your post. Tight lines and Ahhhhooooo (werewolf noise....) |

Hi Adam, Was supposed to take the yak out with my mate for a night fishing session tonight given that it would be an incoming tide and a full moon (Ahooooooo! wolf noise!) but the wind picked up and as you know it is no fun fishing in windy conditions in a yak! postponed till i get back from overseas next week. made up some nice two trace booms with a little glow stick in the middle and was hoping to bump into my elusive friend the flathead on this trip but we will wait till next... I really believe the potential of sportfishing around the UAE is vast - i have caught so many different species blundering around with a shrip or bit of prawn and great species also. Did you know Bonefish are found here? i imagine sneaking around the mangroves at dusk with a 7# fly rod would be awesome fun. This is i believe has not been done, the potential is marvelous! |

Hi All, Went out in the Yak with a mate yesterday North of Ajman. There was a tremendous amount of surfice activity and gulls everywhere. If we had arrived an hour or two earlier we would have caught an incoming tide (always my favourite conditions to fish the coast) Anyway, we got out at slack tide and had around half a dozen Barred Bream, smallish fish, all returned. Then we began to get some Disco Hammour a Sheri, a flatfish and a real viscious looking fish that i have never encountered before. All were returned apart from the flatfish which my mate had for his Dinner. A good couple of hours out in the Kayak though and good to get such a mixed bag even if they were on the small size. All fish were taken on a running ledger rig using squid strips and shrimp. Towards the end of the session a huge boil of fish errupted about 100 yards from us. I would guess they were Barracuda balling up some kind of baitfish. The gulls were working slightly further out for the whole time we were there and there was boats fishing in the same area - perhaps a good opportunity to flyfish... |

Morning all Went out on Friday early morning to Ghantoot. method of fishing: Fly Fishing. Catches 0. Water very murky and too much sea weed around. Went out yesterday afternoon down near Mussafah area, very high water and again a lot of weed around, caught 1 small sea bream which i threw back and about 5 goldfish size fish (white with black stripes down the side and lots of prickly spikes) which obviously went back. Many bites on the bait(squid) but this was definately the smaller fish hitting it. As soon as the line bait hit the water from my cast, they were on it. Anyway, enjoyable weekend none the less just to be out and about. I have a question though for those anglers that have been in the UAE for a while, is it normal this time of year to see so much sea weed and does it stay from say Jan - Feb or is it longer? I am thinking it's around due to the lesser hours of daylight and heat that would normally burn it off in the water? Thanks and have a good day. Adam |

Hi Guys I’m new on the forum. Been living in Dubai for few years now. I know this question has been asked several times before, but can someone please explain where to get the Dubai fishing licenses from. (In detail please) I have read the article about the fishing licenses in the newspaper and found it very vague. Thanks Much appreciated. |

Hi Shahzad, Thanks for the information. Hi Abdul, Yeh, the last trip got me interested in trolling, though i have been made to believe that trolling trips are not always as productive as our last trip. But to be honest, the fight was very good. Though the biggest, I caught was an 8 kg cobia and 8-9 kg yellow tail barracuda and other smaller kings. But still i really enjoyed the cobia & barrcudas fight. Do you still have the Shimano Trinidad TN40 reel or u got rid of it. I went to sea star yesterday. They have daiwa sealines 50 - 600 ranging from AED 300 - 500. I used the sealine in the last trip . Else I know nothing of other reels. I find sea stars prices reasonable as compared to the other shops. Though he has increased the prices of the braid lines from berley from AED 90 to AED 135. Do let me know if you have the reel & if your interested to sell it off. regards amir |

Amir, There are few trolling reels avaialble at Barracuda, Marine & Agriculture Supplier, Knotika, Al Fajar, Sea star and Sun & Sand. The brands varies from Penn, Shimano, Daiwa and Okuma. Why the sudden interest in trolling reels? Due to the last trip? Personally, I don't really like trolling due to not as much interaction with the fish.....until actual reeling in. Getting hits while jigging is just like getting an "electric shock" thus you will suddently feel the adrenaline rush.....just my personal view. Was offering my Shimano Trinidad TN40 before but nobody showed any interest....it was almost as good as new. Believe that U saw it when you came to pick up the rod from me. Few months back, a friend of mine in Brunei was selling one of those Daiwa Sealine with a brand new Carpenter rod...but already been sold. Cheers! |

Amir, There's different fish nets sizes and mish size as well for different kinds of fish. You want to know more about fish nets, check Basspro or Cabela's websites for more details. Thanks |

The fish caught in Fujeirah are released unles the customer wishes to kepp ONE fish for eating. Back in the day, when the sailfish were around, all the sports boats practised catch and release. Therefore the same fish could be caught over and over again (we know this as they were tagged) and would support the local fish population. You have to realise some fish do not breed as rapidly as others and their populations take longer to regenerate. Another point ive heard mentioned is that it is actually better to keep a younger smaller fish for eating rather then an older bigger fish. One reason is obvious: taste but secondly if you look at it statistically an older big fish has probably got better genes to pass on to future fish stock when it breathes. If it has survided long enough in the sea to grow big, it means its genes are well sutied for survival and should be allowed to be passed on. I, like Pranab, took some time to realise that true sports fishing requires the catch and release approach. BUT there is no harm in taking a fish for eating from time to time. B |

TO get fish out of the water, there's something called Fish Net and/or a Lip gripper to get your catch out of the water unharmed. Thanks |

Amir, No, no gaff. The first thing you must do is make the crew aware that you want to catch and release. Make the point that if you catch a nice fish the right size then you would like to take it for the table but everything else must be returned unharmed. If you 'cradle' even a large fish properly it is surprising how easily they will lift from the water and remain reasonably calm. A wet towel will help you grip the fish. The hook can then be removed with disgorgers and you can slip the fish back - oh, after a photo or two! |

Just another question. How do you release a catch while trolling as the boat guys gaff the fish. Can the fish be relased back if its been gaffed. Is there a way that the fish is brought on board with out gaffing it, so that we could release it if we want to. regards amir |
