Will, Dont know about bonito...But the last few times I went out those Grande Smelt where a sure thing... I know what you mean for 1st timers...My fist time was at a ditch off a pond in a park... the blue gill were voracious. I was probably 5 or 6... and here I Im on this board 50 years later... Dizzy; I was thinking a few more T-Tip and some of those choc. chip & Macadamia nut cookies from costco for desert...plus what ever becomes necessary... I got an 8' rental table around here somewhere could bring it by Sat... Marty its been my pleasure dealing with you and your staff and cant wait for next season...See ya..Paul |

Dizzy: I will be there and will also fish the last morning. I plan on bringing the RV down for the weekend. I can supply anything you might need for food or drink. Give me a list and it is done. Anyone heard any word on bonito outside PSL (I love the "Port Sea Lion"). I have a couple of young women who want to go fishing for the first time on the ocean. Wouldn't bonito be a blast for a first-timer? Thanks for organizing this.. Will |

Perch finally bit better than they have in the last six or seven weeks last night....fished a weak outgoing tide for an hour, right before a gorgeous autumn sunset....no wind, spectacular colors, a clean chest high swell, and clean water...my kind of happy hour...fished goleta, water is starting to cool down, but was still able to trunk it....but not much longer...periods of a fish a cast...used the camo crack, carolina rigged...it finally felt like fall down there, and i say about time... |

END OF 2009 ROCKFISH SEASON BBQ-BYOB CELEBRATION/THANK YOU at PSL Sport Launch/Boatyard for Sport Launch users and Fish Report participants-that’s us! WHEN: Sunday, Nov 15/11:30am-4:30pm or until we run out of food. WHAT: Marty’s BBQ pit will be dedicated to BBQ-ing "Prairie Cod fillets" (Beef TRI TIP), maybe misc. things I’ve "captured" on my hunting trips, and assorted sausages from a friend of mine. I’ll also have a big pot of Santa Maria Pinquito Beans, toasted San Luis sourdough bread, salsa and whatever else we might round up between now and then. B.A. Stewart and I want to show our appreciation (as I’m sure you do) to Marty, Del, and the crew at The Sport Launch/Boatyard and Port Sea Lion Harbor for all of their help and knowledge. We’d also like to meet some of the rest of y'all. Bring your own plates/napkins/utensils/beverages or side dishes and maybe a folding chair. Tell your fish stories, pop a top, and meet up with a few friends; old and new. Any food or donations would be greatly appreciated to help make this a great time for all. If you want to share anything or have ideas, please, let me know: CPU.speedfreak@comcast.net or post your message on http://www.fishreports.net/fishing/messages/93/284.html Thank you Jim |

Trip report: Just got back from Bahia Asuncion and La Bocana in Baja. Both are located below the HOOK of Baja on the Pacific side. Stayed in a rental house in Bahia for 6 days and fished YFT and YT. Weather and fishing was amazing. Caught lots of toad Calicos (to 8 lbs)at Isla San Roque and it was a fish a cast for Corvina on the beach. Contact Shari Bondy at http://www.bajabnb.com/php/ for rental houses and pangas. We spent two days at La Bocana (50 miles south) and fished the estero. It was WFO on grouper, spotted bay bass, barracuda, yellow fin croaker and triggers. We caught and released 100 fish in 4 hours to 6lbs. The estero is 10 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. It has a hard packed launch area capable of handling boats as big as you are willing to tow in Baja. It also provides an easy access to the Pacific for fishing pelagics. We stayed with Scott Goodman of www.vamanossportfishing.com He has a couple of trailers for rent in his back yard that are very nice by US standards for $20 per night per person. Both of these places are a short drive from the end of the pavement after leaving highway 1. If the fishing is slow there you can get to Mulege in 4 hours. If you fish Baja be sure to give these places a try. Great kayak fishing from either place as well. |

Update from cabo, the big fish was a 383 lb yft . That thing was a hog. Optionals for dorado and wahoo were taken by a 61lb wahoo. We caught 14 dodo and 2 yft with none at the 30 lb minimum. Fished a 40 foot mirage with 660 hp cummins qsm power, 40 knt boat. Awesome! Weather is nice and the beer is cold. Adios |

Was'nt going to go until tuesday but Jimmy Jr. helped me with a bunch of assorted chores and boat prep thursday in order to remove my excuses. WE Fished a from PSL Friday 11/6 With Jim B Jr. to beat wind and swell over weekend. everyone else couldnt get free on short notice, went south intending maybe purisima again... but dropped way before PT sal near mussel as a small chop was up. got a gopher and a bolina as we drifted north east in the early breaze, Jim got a ling just over 25" and then nothing. drifted over sand for about a mile+ toward "D slide", put out baits, and then Jim hooked something decent on his halibut rig, after a single run fight I gaffed his Aprox 33" Flatty that later weighed in at 16.1#at sport launch. You Couldnt wipe the smile off of Jims face as his little son had Prayed night before that.. "Daddy would get another halibut" fridays trip. tried again for halibut and the drift switched directions again and we were now drifting southwest. motored over toward sal until we metered rocks @ 85' and dropped swim baits, kept seeing unidentified "jumpers" between mussel and sal. soon one jumped right astern , they were small sunfish/molamola about 18"long , saw quite a few more. many swam right up to the boat. bite was slow for a while, we picked up a few bolinas and a couple more gophers, Jims grin was now fading, he put a small mackeral on a halibut trap rig set his rod in a holder and went to use the head. Just as he started to "get er done" his clicker went off and line started going out. I got the honors by default and brought in a nice ling that weighed just over 10# while jim laughed as I gaffed it over the side. now we were up to 2lings ,1halibut and about 1imit of small rockfish. We tried again there and lost a couple rigs then moved out into deeper water . Jim and I each got another legal ling and a couple more bolina and noticed a whitecap. did a few 1000 ft fast drifts and ended up with filled limits on small bolina. Headed back toward port at about 8knots against wind waves and got spray soaked until in the bay. Stopped to dry off and have a beer in the sunny harbor before pulling the boat. Jim weighed his prize and told marty his fish stories, later as we were cleaning fish we could see the first of the Alaskan swells breaking over the Breakwater throwing up plumes of spray. hoping to go again in less wind before the winter groundfish closure. |

Greetings, Fished MB with Aaron today. We struggled to make bait, but eventually got about 10 pieces (2 in the bay and 8 up around Cayucos). Fished the Ab farm area for 1 keeper ling and 1 28" flattie. 4-5 shorts and 1 gopher. Fished from 7 a.m. to noon. Slow pick! Gorgeous in the morning, but definitely some thick swell coming through. It was pretty snotty by noon. Got in before the fog hit. The ocean should be fun to watch this weekend! lat, steve |

You know there isn't really any reason to fish alone. I'm sure many here will help with expenses. And become friends. Plus we may learn some tricks from fellow fishermen. Like the fresh water purple worm. Who would have thought that would work. |

Went up to the cape today for a great day on the water. We were able to run 30 knots up and 25 to 30 knots back. Got our 2 limits of a mix of Reds, chuckle heads and browns, caught unlimited amount of blues and olives. Got one keeper ling and lost one plus about 6 or 7 short lings. Caught and released about 6 canary's. Kevin (KATMANDU) |

Paul, SPOT floats and is waterproof. It's about the size of a Blackberry type cell phone but thicker. It runs for days and days on replaceable Lithium batteries. It also continually sends updated data and tracks your posit over time in the 911 mode. You can also pay an addt'l $49/yr to use the tracking feature which updates your position every 10 minutes. Just like the "OK" message button feature, tracking links to Google Maps so others can see right where you are, real-time. Also, consider a Mustang Survival or Stearns Float Coat your friend and you can slip a SPOT in the pocket. They work as insulated jackets that help prevent hypothermia as well as qualify as a Type III PFD even when not worn. The models I have are very comfortable and there's really no reason to remove them. |

We took my buddies new/used boat out today for it's shakedown trip and the boat ran great. Fished sal today for full limits of rockfish mostly bolina. Caught a couple of short lings and a nice cab. On EPIRBS I have an 406 ARC that has an internal GPS which constantly updates your position. This allows responding personnel to have an near real time position for the transmitting EPIRB, which allows them to locate you faster. The EPIRB is also registered to the boat with contact info. If they receive an activation from your EPIRB, they will contact the people you specify and check to make sure that the activation is not an accident or to get info from you and notify you of the activation. Well worth the money at twice the cost. One note if the boat goes down or you are in the water you need thermal protection. All the EPIRBs in the world won't save you from the cold. I also carry a wetsuit on board. Not as good as a survival suit or life raft but it can't hurt. Boy I hope I never have to put that thing on. Also I am not positive but I think they discontinued the class B EPIRBs that operated on 121 mhz |

I've posted this before but considering the subject has been breached, I'll say it again. If you don't want to swing for the big bucks with an ACR 406 type, you can get a SPOT GPS Satellite Messenger at Big 5 right now for $99 and then pay for the service, online, for an additional $99/yr. SPOT just came out with a new unit with one additional programmable message button and that unit is the usual $149 but the discontinued unit is now $99 and now has a $50 rebate attached so it's only $49!!! That's a steal, guys! It's a very functional system and this gives you the additional option over the ACR to send "OK" or "Track" messages or "Help" messages without activating a full Search & Rescue Mission from the Coast Guard but that option is there by simply activating the "911" button. I've been real happy with my unit and my wife likes the messages when I'm way outside on the water or out in the boonies with no cell service. Check out their site at http://www.findmespot.com/en/ or if you have any questions on how it really works, zip me an email. I'd be happy to share my knowledge of the system. |

I made the decision to get an EPIRB last year and it's not only on the boat EVERY time we leave the dock, it's also in my hunting vest while I'm chasing quail, chukar, pheasants, deer, etc. As an added selling point, the wife takes solo trips to Yosemite a couple of times a year, and having the EPIRB in her backpack while hiking definitely makes her more comfortable. Mine is an ACR, and you can easily go online and change the information that is dispersed once the unit is activated. If I'm taking it on a fishing trip, I go online and indicate that. When my wife takes it into the back country, I can go online and indicate that as well. I was told by the company that this helps expedite the recovery process should something go wrong and the unit has to be used. Regardless, I will never fish or hunt without one again! Mike, good to hear you harvested a few fillets. we are planning tommorrow friday before the wind and waves arrive. we saw that bait jump area but saw no sportfish in it but who knows? sat and sunday look very poor forecast right now (thur 3.30pm). We are hoping to get a couple trips in before the closure since we have fished them so little this windy year. Was watching some guy on tv from NWS ventura and he said that this year is a moderate el nino but that odds are rain will be "normal" this winter. and maybe dry in northern calif. not good for salmon. hope he's wrong but not too wrong. mudslides in so. cal are their worry it seems. As far as epirbs go I have the outdated old style and hope to get the new "406"? small one this winter. Hodges had them for 400 or less? and 500 or less with a gps built in . the biggest negative i read are that the batteries and replacement and shipping are like 150-200more every 4-5years. still a wonder of technology that my save lives. |

PERSONEL EPIRB - buy one and then wear it ! A few years back, when the whale landed on Jerry's boat, most guys went out and bought self-inflating suspenders, and started wearing them. Last year when Greg got rescued because he had a personel EPIRB on when he hit the rocks and went in the water, a couple places ran them at cost to anyone who wanted one. A lot of guys were smart enough to go buy one - Another very good idea ! For those of you who tend to fish alone - they are both a very good idea to buy, and then actually wear it when your out there. Slipping over board can happen to anyone in a second and none of the shit you have in the boat works if your not in the boat. We all spend money on new reels and lures - think about a personel EPIRB - they are actually cheap $500 |

I found the story on line, sorry to here the loss. I too go it alone on rare occasions and catch hell from my wife for the reason in this said accident, after my ordeal, looks like I will give that quest up, fishing alone probably not a great idea. |

B.A., we fished Purisma also and got full limits of Bolinas and Gophers, 3 keeper lings all right at 10lbs, could have been book ends and one 6 lb Cabezon. We fished for some Sand Dabs right out by the red light and the whole time we fished the birds went crazy and we saw splashes all of the service. Never tried a jig in the middle, looked like possable Bonita and we wanted to get to the Purisima and back before we got beached at the launch. We also ran into a warm water current on the way back in, 64.5 degrees just short of Pt Sal and I have two fish finders on my boat. What happen to the fisherman that was lost, we do not get the Coastal News in Visalia? |

Follow up on Tuesday's run: I cannot really figure out why TempBreak showed 61 degree water throughout the area we fished and we never saw anything over 58 degrees the whole time. When you make a run that far (60+miles) you need to trust the SST from the day before. Chloro charts were accurate, based on our observation, but temps were 3 degrees lower that the SST. Any comments/ideas? Will |

I've got to quit predominatly fishing the week ends. And just go...Guess I'll have to get it done @ Channel Is. I used to fish alone all the time... I guess its still a bad idea... My wife has been on me about that these last years. I even snuck out a few times her thinking I had a Bro with me...Guess its time to heed her advise...Our condolience's to the Kubiak family and friends...Good job down at Pt. Sal...Dragon out... |

Steve, we stopped for a exploratory drop at sal and never left. one fish caught at 70' another at 50'. both while fishing the mixed bottom Sand/hard bottom w scattered rocks. all on plastic and a bass rod. can't give ya the lure cause i didn't catch either of them and would have never put such a ugly lure in my tackle box. Maybe SEAWEED will spill the beans. i can say that my purple bass worm outfish everyone on the big Bolinas. don't get many days to fish such light gear, what fun. Thanks Raymond |

stewart - the sst shows the bubble you were in and it is the warmest water around - 61 deg +. On tuesday - I had it jumping from 59 to 60.4 within 30 seconds - so there are lots of "spots" both hot and cool out there right now. Looks like the fish would have to come through a lot of dirty water to get to any clean water that is on the inside right now. Good luck to anyone else who gives it a shot. A sad loss of another commercial brother ! Prayers to the family ! |

We did a short rockcod trip today off of Hazard. First tried 200 ft of water. Very slow so we went to 100 ft and caught a bunch of gofers, blues, and two legal lings. Also hooked one of those misterious big fish that we faught for about a half hour. Turned out to be some kind of brown shark about 50 lbs that took a bottom jig. There are very few reds near Buchon now. Seems like the better red fishing is up by the Cape. Bob |

before you call bull on the water temps I posted in the last post I will say that my meter has alwasys been very accurate and synched with most of yours very well, im aware of what temp break shows for the area, aprox 59.5+ for that time but it was blue and warm, just not covering a very wide area. meter it yourself, its what I would call a "warm finger" make all the jokes you want. |

Thanks for the info guys on the tuna prospecting. Too bad our tuna window was so small this year, at least it was pretty good when we did have it. Will be fishing rockfish from PSL tommorrow in a buddies new boat. Well new to him, it's a 21 ft. valco cc with a 115 honda four. Prob fish uphill from the port as the boat only has a handheld VHF for now. Cracka, This late in the year its mostly winter bassing, rockfishing and lobster at the islands. The fishing gets better the farther west you travel up the islands w/ Miguel and Rosa having some awsome shallow water rockfishing. I heard someone on this board once say that all good fishing is protected by distance or weather and in the case of the western channel islands it's both. Just be careful of the MPA areas. |

Went Rockfishing purisima Tue 10/3 Arrived at PSL around 5:30, Mike & Onieda B crew were Front of the line, we were second. Four boats pulled behind us in the next 10 minutes. Ran down about 21knots , Crew was Joe T. and Jim B. Good weather ,cold water from port to point sal about 57F, Temp increased to about 60f a couple miles past pt sal, Cleaner water , filthy green at sal, dark grren blue at purisima.Started out by releasing 5 gophers in first 1/2 hour, then slowly picked up nice bolinas and few small coppers until we were near limit. Jim Got and kept 1 25.5" ling and released a couple shorts. both party boats fishig the area+about other boats. dedided to head offshore out of curriosity because we were already 20+ nm from port near limit and the wind had shifted to southwest about 1-3knots. water jumped up to about 62 degrees a couple miles out and got clean and blue. we tossed in 3 feathers and headed out a few miles at 7 knots dreaming of stray bonita or tuna. Water fluctuated between 59.5 and 62.2 with lots of temp changes, aften a few more miles the water went under 60 and stayed so we headed to sal for the last few fish. Got a few real short lings there and some smaller bolina and headed home with near perfect weather. would have been a great day to run offshore weather wise. low tide when we got in, had to idle in with drive almost up but basin was deep enough. Heard th Pan Pan calls all day from UsCG advising of adrift or slow moving unmanned vessel "Axel" but didnt find out any circumstances until 11 oclcok news, Our prayers for The departed and Condolences to the family. Mike I hope you guys got some Nice ones for the winter, we didnt get much in shallow water and not a red/blue or yellow in the mix. Hope to get another day like that before the 15th. |

Forget about it! We went out to 35:00/121:55 and found blue water, but temp. was only 57 degrees. We trolled out another 10 to 15 miles on a 215 heading and never found water above 58.5 degrees. Tried north and then south with no luck on the temp. Spent a total of about 5 hours dragging all out best stuff for nada. To top it off, we hit a washboard offshore chop on the way in. Should have gone surfing. Anyway I would suggest a run to the Cape tomorrow. I think it is over offshore. Sorry... |
