Dolphin fishing has been the best in recent memory over the last few weeks! Fish to 50lbs. have been caught off Jupiter and Palm Beach Inlets. Our best fish was a 40lbs Bull Dolphin caught by Ralph "Mad Dog" Messina from Staten Island NY. The fish was caught on a live goggle eye fished from the kite We drifted a good rip and color change in approx. 200 feet north east of Jupiter for about 3 hours before we got our bite. Seeing the large dolphin come up under the kite bait made the wait entirely worth it. We've found fish from 75 feet on out. Anywhere we've found a good condition we found fish. We haven't really "dolphin fished" per se, we've caught sardines and cigar minnows and fished them where conditions looked favorable. Along the way we've caught sailfish, wahoo, cobia, sharks over 100lbs, king mackerel, amberjack, snapper and all the false albacore(A.K.A Bonito)we could reel in. We're still waiting for the elusive Blackfin Tuna. Several in the 30lbs class have been caught. Most of the fish we caught were caught drifting live bait. Awesome news is that large schools of baitfish are moving up and down the beach from Palm Beach To north of Jupiter. I heard recent reports the schools of threadfin herring (greenies) are in and around Palm Beach inlet. Of course there have been days when live bait was tough to catch although they were there. On those days, we've drited fresh dead bait and some frozen stuff too. |

Subject: Jupiter to Boca Inlet Report
Capt. Bob Menegay’s Palm Beach County Offshore Fishing Report Saturday, December 22, 2001
Cool weather brings in the bite! With the passing of the first real cool front to hit South Florida the action has really fired up. Sailfish, Cobia and Kingfish are on the move and Snapper have invaded the reefs. Jupiter and Palm Beach anglers have been getting several sails on every trip. The fish have been hitting Goggle-eyes from kites in 130 feet of water and have been seen balling baits in as little as 30 ft of water off the beach. Kingfish were caught off the Breakers in 80-120 ft. Wahoo have been taking baits trolled or drifted. With most of the hits occurring just outside the Inlets in 130-250 ft of water. Anglers on the Juno Pier have been catching Spanish mackerel, Bluefish and Pompano. Boynton anglers have seen a few sails though not as many as to the north or south, this could be that most of the boats have been working the reefs for Snapper. Trollers have been getting some nice Dolphin and Wahoo. The Drift-Boats out of Boynton have been reporting as much as 200 lbs. of Mutton Snapper a trip. Lake Worth Pier anglers are getting Cobia, Snapper, Sheepshead and Bluerunner. Boynton Inlet Jetty anglers are still getting some Snook action, but remember that snook season was closed as of the 15th of Dec. till Feb.
Boca Inlet area had a good Sailfish bite as well. With Kingfish and Hoo’s taking baits of San Remo. Cobia have been along the beaches and a few of the Sportfishers with tall towers have been working the beach on a northwest wind and finding plenty of action.
Another cool front is expected for Christmas day so the action should continue strong well into the New Year. Watch the weather and plan accordingly. The Sailfishing is generally best for 3 days following a front. Cobia fishing is good the day after a front, before the wind turns east. Reef fishing can be good any time the seas are tolerable.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Capt. Bob Menegay 561-588-4969 captbobm@bellsouth.net

Subject: Dolphin, Wahoo and Sails, Oh my!!!
Say it over and over my friend, because that’s the new slogan in South Florida, West Palm Beach to be more precise. Over the last week or so great catches of all three specie of fish have been landed. Other impressive catches include blue marlin and blackfin tuna. A 90lbs. wahoo was caught in 130 ft outside Jupiter Inlet on a live sardine flatlined. Unfortunately we haven’t landed any wahoo recently but we did have several great days both inshore and offshore.
Sailfish are stretched out along the coast. Everyday on the radio we here other boats reporting sailfish in the area. We’ve concentrated our efforts from 200ft to 75ft. from Lost Tree off Singer Island to the Hobe sound loran tower. Start by catching bait anywhere from Jupiter inlet to south of the Juno pier. We head south towards Singer Island then out to 120-200ft. I’ll cruise the beach looking for surface activity such as tarpon rolling or snook and jacks busting on bait before head offshore.
Bonito have been thick on the "drop", I generally start in that depth because there is usually a rip or edge in that depth range, give or take a few feet. If every bait is catching a bonito I move out to deeper water were the baits have a better chance of getting spotted by a sailfish before the "bones" get to it. Greenies and spanish sardines have been the most popular baitfish.
Good dolphin fishing has occurred but you may have to run 10+ miles to find activity. After getting beat up by bonito, we usually fire up and run a little bit offshore. The run will cool you down and you may find weeds, birds or other signs of fish. Wahoo will be in these same areas. If that is your goal, stick with your game plan run and gun until you find a good area then troll or drift with live baits chances are you see some activity.
Sail King Sportfishing Charters is running summer specials: 4 hours-$250 6 hours-$325 8 hours-$400

If it doesn’t have fins, props or hooters…Count me out!!!
See you out there! Tight lines Captain Rob
