Subject: Report for October

The month of Ocober is one of my favorite months to fish here in deep south Texas. The reds are moving and the Tarpon are thick as well. Red fish as well as Tarpon like finger mullet and thats the bait of choice for me.
Large schools of reds are out on the sand as well as ove most of the east side. These guys are out to find their mates and are hungry as he go into their prespawn ritual. The best way to fish these are to drift along throwing mullet on a 6/0 wide gap hook. As the fish takes let him have it for a two count and then set the hook. Artificials work here also but the smell and look of a real mullet hardly ever gets denied. In he last 14 days we have limied like this so I know it works.
The Tarpon on the other hand like this bait as well. However you must get it close to the bottom and around the jetties with out hanging on the rocks. So drift it with a weight and don't cast. When you get the hit just tighten up and don't jerk to set the hook. You'll be amaised at the sucsess ratio if you do this.

Subject: May--June Fishing report

May is coming to a close and it has been good and bad. Let the wind die down and the trout are jumping in the boat; nothing to go out and get a 30 fish limit before the sun starts to heat up, but let the wind blow (like it has for the last few days) and you work your tail off for 20 fish. The upside to the wind tho is that it turns on the redfish that have been relunctant to bite most of the year. But all in all the fishing is better here than on the rest of the Texas coast. A brief bit of sunshine we had a good school of Tarpon show up at the jetties and stayed there for the better part of a week, still taking one or two in the 125# range when the wind lays enough to get out there. I still remember the early 70`s when in Oct. you would see schools of the "Silver King" that would number in the 1000`s. The wind of course will moderate (probably after Memorial Day weekend) and the fishing action for the rest of the summer will get back to normal. Look for trout, flounder and redfish to satisfy in the bay with Kingkish, Bonito, Dolphin, Sailfish, Wahoo and Blue Marlin to fill the void offshore. It`s going to be a busy season so get your reservations in early.

Without sounding redundant--trout, trout, trout. Pretty easy to limit on speckled sea trout with a 30 fish limit exceeding 70#`s. Redfish starting to show up in good numbers with most being taken either early in the a.m. or late in the p.m. If you get out early enough and want some explosive action throw some topwater around the spoilbanks near Marker 67-57. Some flounder but a little early in the year look for the best in July.If you want to experiance some truely "fine" fishing plan a visit to our little bit of "Heaven" Port Isabel/ So.Padre island, Tx--Most weekends through July are taken but weekdays are less congested so make your plans and call 1-800-943-6282 for the fishing experiance of your life.

High winds--GOOD fishing, normal to limit on trout with an average limit of 30 trout weighing 65 to 80 pounds best bet on an "Austin` Clicking Popping Cork" used with live shrimp fish the color lines on both East and West sides of the bay in the deeper water (3-4 ft. deep) Redfish showing up when the wind is really howling and mudding up the water on Gaswell Flats, most are small 22--25 inches but once in awhile an oversized fish is found--booking real heavy for Apr. and May so get your reservations in real soon--1-800-943-6282 for bookings or just to talk fishing Capt Lou Austin

Subject: April fishing report

The fishing is heating up wit limits of real good trout so far this month. The fish my clients have been catching have been averaging around 3# and some a lot better. The only fish we've been catching on top waters has been redfish for the most part. However limits of reds when we target them have been had. The trout are on the color changes and the reds are on the west side south of unnessary. Chartrues seems to be the best color.

Subject: Fishing Report

In the past month the speckled trout fishing has been great, looks like this will continue through out the rest of the spring and summer. Last week I fished Dr. Tony Saca and we had a stringer of 20 trout(limit) that weighed 55#. Also had two good friends (clients) from Dallas--Bob Stout and Betty Keith fish for two days with a combined catch of 60 trout(limit) 5 redfish, and (1)4# flounder for a weight of 154#. The water is murky because of the wind so live shrimp fished with an "Austin Clicking Popping Cork" is the best choice in about three feet of water. Redfish are here and they should start being more aggressive as the spring continues. As the water clears look for good artifical action including "Top Water" in the early mornings. Charters are booking up fast for Apr. and May so when you get your dates down for a visit to the Port Isabel/ So. Padre Island area give me a call for a reservation at 1-800-943-6282 or email on the link provided.

Subject: New Year Fish Report

Greetings Anglers!
The start of a new year is once again upon us. The start of a new year always means unpredictable weather and strong winds for the Laguna Madre.
Another thing, more importantly for some, it means is trophy trout. Big sow trout search the flats for an area to spawn. To catch a big trout before her
spawn means a fish 8-10 lbs. + is possible. But remember, these trout possess the future in their bellies. If the intent of mounting the fish is
not involoved, catching and releasing is the best thing to do to ensure next years catch. Redfish will become more active the warmer the water gets. Take
a break and visit South Padre!
Thank you,

Subject: December Fiahing report

The fishing so far this month has been fair at least. We have caugh on one trip with Robert Amar seven reds and eleven trout. Then on another trip with Joe Fleock we only boxed ten trout. The weather makes a big difference in what wants to bit. If the wind is blowing and stiring up the bottom the reds seem to feed more aggesivly. If its fairly clam then the specks seem to rule the waters. However last week we were tagenting some reds in the shallows that would eat a fly if it was presented in a very quiet manner. They were alful spooky and didn't take much for them to turn tail and run the other way. In contrast to turuing on the fly with aggressivenes and inhaling it.

Subject: FISHING REPORT

`NOV. Fishing Report
The fishing outlook for November is probably going to change since the weather has. It looks like we’re going to have a cold winter this year as the fronts have already made their way through into Deep South Texas. The first two showed up in October and were pretty severe. This will change the patterns we will be targeting.

The place to start to look will be on the gas well flats. The method that will work here will be the shrimp and the popping cork. Fished at about 30” deep you should find numbers of redfish and some trout, with an occasional flounder. Another good spot will be the color changes on either the west side or the east side of the ICW. These places also fish the shrimp and popping cork.

Although the bull minnow and coca hoes will work here also they probably won’t hit them as quick, especially early in the morning. It seems they have to thaw out first so they can chase the artificial. Their metabolism must warm up before they get frisky enough to do that. Another thing you can do now is to work the minnows very slowly along the ICW edges. Some trout will be found there along with some flounder. The key is SLOWLY which means you have to fish were there is no bottom grass growing so as to not fowl the bait.

The surf fishing will be turning on now also. Redfish along with trout, sand trout, whiting and flounder can be found her also. The key in the surf is to find a hole in the bars. To do that look for waves that are not breaking where the rest of the waves are breaking. This is where the water that comes up on the beach goes back out so consequently it takes food with it and the fish are there to partake. Live shrimp is the best bait but fresh mullet work also. Fish them both on the bottom with as little weight as possible. Good Luck and let me know how you do.

Tight lines, Skipper Ray
