Good News and bad news. Water Temp. is about 75 degrees very good for fishing. Three days ago great fishing for redfish and trout yet today we have immense wids and rain and thunders. Go figure. Texas fishing at it's best I guess.

Sorry if not best place to post but I can no longer call Bob of Bob's Custom Tackle, 450 Cleveland Blvd, Aransas Pass. I talked to him Sep 23 via 361 758 4704, and delivery to him of my two reels was confirmed Sep 25, but his phone has been out of service since, nor has he contacted me as he said he would. Is he OK?

I'm looking for some recommendations for party boats in Port Aransas. Each year I plan a fishing getaway for the guys in my church (up to 15 guys) and am looking to getting these guys on a party boat for a day or two.

Any suggestions that you may have will be greatly appreciated!!

Fishing off the North Jetty at Fish Pass is producing large numbers of speckeled trout by free linning life shrimp into the surf. You might want to attach a small steel leader because many spansish mackerial are being caught as well.

Tuna in Texas.... I'm ready to catch yellowfin tuna of the texas coast.

Can some recommend a great guide to show me the way? I've been deep-sea finishing a few times (some great trips, some not so great trips), but one thing is for sure... I want a lot of tuna.

Looking for the "best" guide and time to go. My buddy and I will go anytime during the week. I just want tuna :-)

thanks

PS. are there any Bluefin tuna in the gulf?

Subject: Shark Fishing Port Aransas, Texas article

It is that time of year already when the chances of catching a trophy shark offshore Port Aransas, Texas is a daily goal. The anglers that charter fish with us this time of the year fully expect to tie into a monster fish. May and June and prime months for big sharks as they move into Texas waters to breed. Last year we noticed that 80% of the sharks we caught were big males. We try to practice catch and release on non edible species, especially females. The common species to Texas water this time of the year are blacktip, spinners, bull, dusky, silky, tiger, greater hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead and a few mako sharks still lingering around. The federal limit on sharks is one shark per boat with a 4 1/2 ft minimum length.
We target the blacktip and spinner sharks behind inshore shrimpers that are dragging their nets. This is a very dangerous style of fishing. You are in close quarters with the shrimper inside his bridle cables and should not be done by novices. We use a heavy duty version of a 3 hook kingfish leader. I use 120 lb wire with a 5 ft length in front of the first hook. For bait we use ribbonfish, sand trout, boston mackerel or bonita strips. These baits are drifted over the moving shrimpers nets where awaiting sharks are feeding on the bycatch of the shrimp nets. These fish in the Spring range from 5-7 ft and upwards of 170 pounds. Hooking big sharks is easy with a little experience, boating them is very dangerous. I have been bitten twice and my legs have various scars from tails of big sharks ( over 60 stitches and staples in the past 10 yrs). This is respecting them and being very careful. I have learnt to flying gaff them and rope them. Swim platform were designed to hold sharks on my boats. Blacktips and spinners make excellent table fair. We cut their tails to bleed and ice them in fish bags after they are DEAD.

With the federal red snapper closure opening I can still get my big shark if blacktipping doesn't pan out. I target wrecks between 80 to 200 feet of water. We anchor by the wrecks and start chumming. My customers bottom fish for amberjack, red snapper, grouper and other species while we place shark rods out at the various depths. I use Penn 50 Internationals spooled with Amillon 50 lb test line, with a 400 lb. wind on leader with 8-12 ft of 170 pound piano wire leader. Big strong flat hooks are a must. We vary our baits from live bait fish to dead mackerel, sand trout, bonita, jack fish or rays. We cut the baits in such a way that the shark can easily swallow it with little resistance. Hook placement is a critical part of good hook sets. We vary our baits from the surface on floats to the bottom covering the entire water column. It is not uncommon to hook other fish with these rigs. We have caught yellowfin tuna, huge amberjack, warsaw grouper, moray eel, big rays, and last year a 80 pound ling. I set my reels with the clicker on and just enough pressure that wave action doesn't pull off line. We have the boat anchored with a quick release on our anchor line. When the fish is hooked good we un-tie the boat and fight the fish in open water away from hangs and the wreck that can cut you off. Shark hits can either be really slow or screaming with lots of force. I let the fish run for 30-60 seconds, get the slack out of the line then set the hook hard. The average shark will show its self in 30 minute increments. We normally boat the between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. When alongside I place 2 flying gaffs in them then get pre made tail ropes around the head and tail. At this point the fight is over. If we release the fish they can be pulled into gaff range, photos shot and the leader cut close to the shark. They swim off never the wiser.

Offshore Port Aransas sharks are very abundant. The new Federal law prohibits a drastically over fishing for sharks. I was at first opposed to the limits but now it seems to make it easier to consistently find nice big game fish to fight. I do not like shooting many sharks as it is dangerous. Me and my other captains here at Pure Pleasure Fishing believe a few well placed gaffs and tail ropes are much more safer and just as productive. I love sharking especially when involving mako sharks which give us a great game fish to target in the winter and spring. If interested in a trophy shark, give us a call.

When the wind isn't blowing fishing is looking good. Finally some nice tuna action when lucky enough to find an offshore shrimp boat. Big shark action is very hot with may and June the best months. Amberjack
fishing is good and red snapper season opens in Federal waters April 21st. We have lots of open dates, We are still looking for angler for the 67 Annual port Aransas Deep Sea Roundup July 6 and 7th. King mackerel should be moving closer the next month. it isn't to late for some great mako shark action or big wahoo. Subject: Tenacious is scolding HOTTT

Man are we on a roll, wahoo over 70 lbs, 90 pound wahoo while fun fishing, 3 makos in one week, and missed a state record scalloped hammerhead by 6 lbs.
I still don't feel we have had a great trip yet but the new girl can not be out done.

However, your favorite captain almost bought the farm today. Andy and myself were doing maintainenace on "Sweet Dreams" and "Tenacious" today. I went to lock "SWEET DREAMS" for lunch break and some how slipped off the dock. No problem, right, I hit the cold bay water, said a few choice worlds then didn't pop up. I swam and swam and couldn't get up to the
surface. I am PROUD but will admit I was scared, finally I hit the surface, screamed and sunk back down. My leg had tangled with our big prech trap and she was plenty full. Andy came running, and finally saw me. He was able to reach my hands and pull me in. The roped was wrapped 3 times around my leg. He cut it off and I was never so happy to see his mug. I lost my glasses and have a swollen leg but very thankful tonight. We are taking tommorow off to just relax, Spring Break and big fish have us worn out. Anyway, give us a call and lets keep the roll
going.

Subject: Total Chaos

We finally got the Total Chaos all overhauled and cruising the tuna grounds. There were over 20 boats broken into over Thanksgiving weekend and we were one. This means all new tackle for the T.C. Offshore
fishing is good when the wind isn't blowing to awfully bad. We ran a few trips to the rocks, finally the water is clearer and the tuna coming back. We got a real nice 200 lb. dusky shark a several 40 lb yellowfin tuna. Last week did a red snapper trip in state waters down south. Ran about 38 miles and fished 45 minutes to catch 24 red snapper, all
running over 5 lbs., with most 8-12 lb range. For these trips all the people onboard need a Texas state license and s/w stamp. Well I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's. The new calendars will be hitting the streets around the 1st of the year. Those customer's that made the calendar, those that fished with us more than once and those special clients will be getting a copy. We will be selling copies for $10, place your orders now. We also have our 2001 T-shirts coming out in January and Captain's Shirts and Jackets available. Call or email, Jodi for prices. Until next time,
I'll see you in the Blue Water,

Subject: After Thanksgiving Fishing

Offshore Fishing Report for Port Aransas, Texas
N0v. 20, 2000

Fishing is really heating up when the wind is not blowing. Lots of big yellowfin tuna and plenty of blackfin tuna. Its a great time to tie into a shark that you'll remember for a lifetime. I have really gotten the fishing bug and seeing women do the after Thanksgiving shopping thing I figure if any of you are willing to put down those rifles for a day and let's go wage some war on those tuna. We are running 10 hr trips only but any trips for the next few weeks I'll throw in a extra hour or two. Amberjack and grouper fishing is getting good also. We are
catching a few dog and lane snapper along with some lost king mackerel.

Anyway lots of empty dates

Offshore Port A, weather was nice for a few days then the wind blew.

Calming down this week for the last week of red snapper season before the closure. Big sow red snapper are abundant. The tuna showed back up out around 200 feet on shrimpers with huge 200 lb plus dusky, silky, blacktip and mako sharks every where. Andy still hasn't gotten another chance at that 600lb mako, hopefully this week. The yellowfin are back and good size, 60-170 lb class fish. Amberjack fishing is hot at the rocks. For the rest of the winter we are only booking 10-12 hr trips.

Total Chaos back out of yars and running great. We have lots of open dates so give us a call and lets go wage some war.

Offshore Report for Port Aransas, Texas
Oct 15, 2000

Finally a break in the weather after 3 weeks of blowing a Gail. Blue water is out 35 miles and the water temperature is cooling down.

Captain Andy Sutherland and captain Bill Ravenscraft and myself have been fishing hard the past few days.
We have been hammering the rocks looking for the first sign of the tuna settling in for the winter. We have been catching alot of sharpnose sharks, blacktip sharks, king mackerel and amberjack. The red snapper
bite is heating up, the closure is getting close (Oct 31). Mako sharks are here early, some big ones already showing up over 200 lbs. The thresher sharks should be migrating right behind the makos. We caught a nice grouper the other day, so winter fishing is really turning on. The big yellowfin should be getting more consistant any day now. I expect an awesome winter. Give us a call and let's go fishing.

Are you ready for some ACTION?????? The rocks from Big Southern to Eastern are producing lots of blackfin tuna with some huge yellowfins mixed in. Boat traffic is bad on calm days so leaving early or night trips are best. Wahoo in the 50 to 100 pound class are cruising about with some days producing double digit fish. Monster mako sharks are abundant but be prepared a 400 pound plus mako is for no novice to boat by themselves. A new pending state record 707 1/2 lb female was caught a few weeks back. Amberjack, grouper, vermillion snapper and sharks make for a variety. Call us soon, We are awaiting your adventure.

See you in the Blue Water,
