Little Smoker Rig 6''2oz. Pink/White How "Smoker Baits" got its name! When Greg Metcalf and Larry Razza fished back in the '80s, they would modify their artificial lures to give them more lifelike effects. They did so for years until they finally developed a design that turned out to be so "hot" that it would outcatch any other lure on the boat. They found the secret was to create an area deep in the construction of the lure that, when trolled at high speeds, would produce a vortex (turbulence) of air and water in back of the lure. The result is the massive stream of bubbles created by this vortex design. As fishermen started to use the new design, they said the lure left a path in the water that looked like Smoke. "That bait really smokes," fishermen were saying and the name stuck.
