Painting a boat requires planning because of the different material compositions of boats.

Painted surfaces may be wood, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, or any combination of these materials.

Preparation for painting is not the same for metal, fiberglass, or wood.

Fiberglass painting requires that surfaces be cleaned of oxidation and finely sanded.

Repairs may require use of fiberglass matt and resins prior to painting.

Metal surfaces may need scraping and treatment for corrosion removal prior to painting.

Special primers may be required to ensure adequate paint bonding to metal surfaces.
