Spot Lights for Boats

Boat spot lights are a great tool for navigating during night time conditions.

Everything on the water looks different at night. Having a high quality spot light is a real advantage at night.

Boat spot lights will have candle power of 100,000 watts or greater.

Spot lights can be hand held models or hard mounted. Some models can have a base mounted onto a rail and have the flexibility to be either mounted or hand held.

Spot lights do draw quite a bit of power so it is best to power them when the engine is running and the generator replacing lost current. Spot lights generate a tremendous amount of heat.

After turning them off, never lay the unit face down onto the deck. The heat from the light can melt decking material.

Boat spot lights are a tremendous navigation aids when on the water at night. There are a variety of spot lights and more than one type ise desirable to have on any boat.

Hand held spot lights have halogen bulbs for high candle power light output. They can be carried off the boat after docking or moved around the boat to any needed location.

Portable spot lights can have metal or plastic housings. High quality portable spot lights incorporate rubber O-ring seals to maintain water proof integrity for internal components to prevent corrosion.

Other spot lights are designed to be hard mounted. Some of these designs have limited portability built in with chords that detach with the light from the light mounting base. These models also swivel and offer very good flexibility.

The larger hard mounted spot lights will have at least 200,000 candle power and therefore really light up the surroundings and provide excellent visibility.

A couple of things to remember when using spot lights are that the lenses become extremely hot. It’s important not to lay the light down with lens facing down after use because a fire can start or the surface the lens touches will become damaged from the heat. Another tip is to realize that these spot lights draw a lot of electrical power.

If connected to boat batteries, it is best to connect them to an auxiliary battery, not the boat’s cranking battery.
