Casting NetFishing nets come in three primary configurations.

  • Seine nets are rectangular in shape and vary in length from 6 to 20 feet. In this configuration each end of the net is attached to a pole. A person is stationed at each end of the net and the net is walked slowly along the bottom trapping bait fish and shrimp in the net.

  • Another basic net configuration is the cast or throw net. This net is circular in shape with lead weights imbedded in the net extremities. A cord is attached to the middle of the net on a circular ring. The net is folded and then thrown over the water to trap bait. As the net is thrown it opens up to its full diameter. As it falls to the bottom bait fish and shrimp are trapped inside the net. Cast nets vary in diameter from 6 to 9 feet and are popular for acquiring both fresh and salt water bait.
  • The third net configuration is the hand held net used to land fish into a boat or scoop bait fish from the water into a live well. These nets have varied features such as net diameter, length of handle, and depth of net area.

Crab Trap

Fishing traps are used to catch bait or for catching game species for the table such as crabs.

Fishing traps incorporate designs which allow for bait or other species to enter the trap, but not exit due to entry door mechanism or complexity of the escape route. Bait is inserted inside the trap to attract the targeted species to enter the trap. Entry can be through a trap door which only opens into the inside of the trap or through a tunnel opening which is too complex to exit.

Fishing traps are usually marked with floating buoys attached to the trap within four to six feet of the actual trap location. Traps are identified with the owners name or fishing license number for retrieval purposes.
