Fishing Sinkers & Fishing Weights

Fishing WeightWeights and sinkers are often overlooked as being critical to lure and bait presentation by the average angler.

Fishing guides understand how to utilize weights and sinkers to increase the effectiveness of their lure and bait presentations.

Lead tape applied to a diving crank bait will make the crank bait suspend in the water when the retrieve is paused, rather than rising rapidly to the surface. A small split shot weight attached to the line above a free rigged worm will give a very slow sinking presentation.

These techniques increase the chance for receiving bites when the fish are sluggish.

Some hooks have weights molded into the hook body which allow for easy attachment of plastic baits and preclude the need for rigging weights and beads.

Fishing SinkerWeights and sinkers come in many shapes and sizes. Triangular weights are good for use in the surf to hold baits within the desired casting areas.

Weights used to rig worms Texas and Carolina style are cone and oval shaped respectively. In line weights give an advantage to trolling applications. These weights have swivels built into one end, are narrow for resisting snags, and thus allow trolled lures to run at deeper depths without affecting water resistance to the fishing line.
