Subject: Androscoggin hatches

Hi to those of you interested in the happenings on the Androscoggin River in northern New Hampshire. Sunday the 27th of May found the weather to be periodic showers which is expected to continue through the first part of the week. With the showers, warmer than usual air and water temps. the explosion of blue winged olives was welcomed by both angler and fish. Although typically hatching time for the giant black stoneflys these little pieces of tenderloin awakened many fish both deep and immediately sub surface. We did well with a bead head olive wooly bugger tied on a short shank nymph hook as this species of Ephemerella run about a size #14-16 hook. Fish took solidly for the most part although many short hits could be associated with the fast water we were fishing. Get out there and enjoy before the black flys appear;)

Subject: upper Androscoggin conditions

The Androscoggin River watershed has followed the pattern of much of the Northeast. With two weeks of air temps. ranging between 65-85 F the exceptional winter snow pack and ice on the lakes quietly vanished. A blessing to river front landowners that expected severe and prolonged flooding that didn't materialize.

Water temps. are still ranging in the mid to upper 40's because of the evening temps. but the water is clear and at normal late spring levels. Some activity with little brown stones fished slowly along the bottom or a streamer pattern fished below the turbines at the dams may produce some surprises to the angler. I might add that being so early the mosquitoes and black flys have not yet appeared as of May 10th so its a pleasant time to be casting a fly. Best to all for now and be sure to release rainbows between 12-20" quickly as they most likely are carrying roe or milt. Bye and bye...
