As of May 10th the snow pack has disappeared along with the ice on the Connecticut Lakes. Exceptionally warm temps. in the Northeast have sent the spring season into overdrive. The water in the river flowing through Colebrook,N.H. is running clear and at normal late spring levels. The first caddis emergence of the year was witnessed last evening bringing smaller fish up to just beneath the surface. With water temps. still running in the mid 40's the trout's metabolism is still in slow motion so they will not appear consistently until a bit later. Will keep you posted on what takes place ;)
As of April 24th the upper Connecticut River is at flood stage with melting of the greater than normal spring snow pack. The past three days sunny days with air temps. between 60-70 F have pushed the river over its banks. News reports from the midwest show that our difficulties are of a minor nature compared to theirs.
With 3-5 feet of snow still carpeting the floor of headwaters forests it will be a while yet before flys or any other method of fishing will be very productive.
The Connecticut lakes remain locked in ice and most likely will remain that way until mid to late May at the earlies. Look for the next posting when smelt and salmon return to the inlet at Lake Francis.
