Subject: San Juan River Fishing with high flow
Andy Kim's Fly Fishing. yong-special.com
Fished Sat half day afternoon (June 9th) with my head guide Jerry the Camo-man. The flow was 4300cfs and clear. I landed 50 plus and Jerry landed about 2 dozen fish with Yong Wings, Yong JR, Yong Blood, AK 47 and Yong Special size 18 to 22's using 5X tippet. Most of the fish were 18 to 21" and very healthy. Started at the Middle Flats and wade down to the Kiddie Hole. Lots of fisherman were on the river but very few were catching and one of the guy was doing San Juan shuffle further upstream from us catching few. Sorry to see people doing this kind of fishing (illegal) instead of find a right fly to catch fish. Fish were hitting hard on the flies we used so couldn't miss the strikes. This is the best time to catch some of the football trout so come fish with us. By the way there will be an article about my flies and I on next issue (Sept) Fly Fisherman magazine so check it out.
Here's our annual fishing trip to UT report: Fished the Green 31st May to 3rd June and Strawberry River on the 5th with my head guide Jerry the Camo-man. The weather was pretty good till Sunday and snowed on us that night. But we had to go to Rock Springs, WY on the 4th to help move Jerry’s stuff which was left there before he moved to the San Juan River so we didn’t get to go fishing at all but managed to drive to the Strawberry Reservoir campground by Renegade Bay that night.
Simply I could say the Fishing was fantastic on the Green, Strawberry River and Reservoir with some heavy wind we had.
There weren’t many fishermen on the Green except on the Saturday the 2nd. Few of my regular customers also joined me on there and fished together for few days. We fished right below the Dam to about half mile downstream from the Little Hole during that time. The flow was low (around 1200cfs) and the river was clear.
I have seen some baites hatch around noon till 3 to 4 PM each day so we used Yong Wings during that time which produced many fish along with AK 47. There were lots of cicadas around like last year although I think more this year. We all caught at least 50 fish plus per day with varieties of my flies as usual: Yong Special (brown, cream, gray), Yong Wings (olive), Yong Blood (red), Yong JR (gray), Yong Dry (midge-M&M, baetis-olive) and AK 47 from size 6 to 24’s. My biggest fish was 21” fat brown about 5 pound range.
Strawberry River (first time for us) below the Dam was excellent and I set the new record of my own which I call it Grand Slam (rainbow, cutthroat, brook, brown trout all in one day). I wonder how many of you had a same experience. The best flies were Yong Wings, Yong JR and Yong Special size 18 to 22’s. My biggest fish was almost 22” (1/16” shy) rainbow 4 pounds plus there and it didn’t even have any hook marks on the lips. Since there were lots of fallen trees where I found him thus I had a hard time landing that fish but made it and took some photos of it. I’ll submit this photo to the Strawberry Visitor Center when I get it. Jerry and I caught at least 40 plus fish each mostly brook trout ranged from 10 to 13”.
Fished the Reservoir (Renegade Bay) around sunset for 30 to 40 min when I returned from the river after the dinner. Jerry was tired and so was I but I had to fish the reservoir before head back home next day Didn’t had much time (sun was setting fast) to fill the float tube so went out with about 70% air filled. Fish were rising everywhere so I started out with Yong Dry M&M but soon I realized my observation was wrong from the distance when I got close to the fish. Changed to size 18 Yong Special (brown) and Yong Flasher (dark olive) with little weight and caught 7 fish in no time (slow stripping) but they were little (14 to 17”). The daylight went out on me fast so had to get back to my motor home.
Fishing in UT was always enjoyable to me and thanks to those concerned fishermen like you who took care of them very well. Andy Kim

Subject: San Juan River Fishing conditions
The San Juan River is flowing at the normal flow of 500 cfs.
Water is now CLEAR! There is still a little stain to the water, its perfect. The angler still needs to pay attention to the hatch, which has been mostly Midge, with very few BWO’s in spots. Match the hatch closely.
We had some real nice days in the 50’s this weekend. The hatches were short lived and mainly Midge, very few beatis.
Fishing was fair to great from day to day, seems to be the weather.
In Texas Hole and several other areas of the river there are large schools of 10” fish, both browns and bows. With the larger 16” – 20” mixed in.
The attractor patterns that are working are: ·Orange San Juan Worms size #18 ·Brassie #20 ·Princess size #22 or other red larva patterns ….. #1
The point flies that were popular this week were: ·Gray RS-2 #22 both the foam wing and CDC wing….#1 ·Midge emergers, black #22 Krystal Flash & floss wing ·Gray flashback WD-40’s ·Chocolate emergers #22 ·Flashback Pheasant tails #22

Fishing report for 6/23/00 Flows and conditions--Flows are at 500 cfs and the water is very clear. Hatches and flies--Hatches--Midges and Baetis Mayflies. Caddis are just appearing, should pick up in the next week. Flies--Krystal Flash pupa, black size 24-26 Zebra Pupa size 24-26 Foam Wing Baetis grey and chocolate size 24 Johnny flash grey and chocolate size 24 Dead Raccoon size 12 Parachute Adams size 18-24. Elk Hair caddis and Peacock caddis and Tav's Stacked caddis size 16-18 work when caddis are about.
Fishing Conditions--Fishing is excellent as the hatches are getting better. The fish are feeding well in the riffles as well as the slow water. Midges are the primary food source, but the baetis are present in the afternoons and the caddis are starting to hatch also. Also look for the first good rain shower of the summer to trigger the flying ant hatch. Anything big and black will work when that happens. This is one of the best times to fish the San Juan!
14 day forecast--The weather has been too nice, but we are slowly getting some afternoon thunderheads that hopefully will soon bring the summer rains. Look for this pattern to increase as the summer goes on. The next 14 days on the San Juan are some of the best of the summer, so book now, you dont want to miss the best fishing of the year! Dont forget the wonderful summer vacation package from Sandstone Anglers. Get guided fishing, lodging and meals for $350 for two. Come and see why the San Juan is the hottest fishing in the Southwest!
