Subject: Western Bite is HOT!!

Western Bite is HOT!!

The Walleye fishing in Lake Erie's western basin has been sizzling hot the past few days! The area from 4-5 miles W/NW of West Sister Island to the Michigan border has long been a June hot spot and this year if holding true to form. Limit catches, some taking just a couple hours, have been common in this area since last Thursday or Friday. The fish have been ranging from 13-23 inches with most fish in the 14-18" class. This size fish is the ultimate for eating quality and with the bite being "on" it's plenty of good fun too! Some other areas have been producing Walleye as well, but have been a bit more spotty because of the Mayfly hatch going on right now. If the west end of the lake is too far for you, try the area just N/NE of Niagara Reef in 30-32ft. of water and use weapons fished from the surface down to a 10 count with 1/2 oz. lead and gold blades. This area was good over the last weekend and also on Monday. Another area has been around the Ohio reefs near Davis Besse nuclear plant in 13-22 ft. of water. Best areas have been near Round Reef, Crib Reef, Flatrock, Little Pickerel, and Cone Reef. These areas are mostly rocky and have less areas for Mayfly hatching. Use weight forward spinners such as Tom's Walleye Lure, Tiny Teasers, Erie Dearies, etc. Best colors have been chartreuse, red & orange or Gold. Always tip the lures with night crawlers. Heading easterly out of Channel Grove Marina (my dock) there have been a few holdout Walleye in the Sandusky Bay area in 6-7 ft. of water and some decent fish are in there too! Look for the action to cool down in there soon though, as the weeds will soon take over the bay and make it impossible to fish with spinning lures. The area from Sawmill Creek to Ruggles Reef around Huron, OH. has been holding a few nice fish and soon the area just North of Lorain should take off.

Smallmouth fishing has been good near Pelee Island on the Ontario side of the lake and should been prime for the opening of Bass season there on June 30. Remember to catch and release as much as possible to help keep the Bass population in good numbers. There are plenty of Walleye for eating purposes, so try to take it easy on your Bass killing!! Look for the Smallmouth to be anywhere from 12-30ft. of water and use tube jigs, twister tails or crank baits for the best success.

Yellow Perch have been running near Kelley's Island and off of Cedar Point. Nice catches of Perch in the 9-12 inch range have been reported and even a few up to 14"!! The Perch action should continue to improve as summer wears on.

White Bass have been hanging around the Starve Island area and out near the Sister Islands in good numbers.

Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!

Subject: Island area of Lake Erie Report

Hello, it’s Tuesday evening. We had the best weekend here at Lake Erie we have had since last fall. The weather was just right. Not too hot or too cool, not too windy, just windy enough, and it didn’t rain. I guess we might have a storm tonight. Maybe in the next few minuets. If it hits I’ll have to turn the computer off and wait to finish this report. Captain Rex Bodi who has Sea Hawk Charters, said he had 48 Walleyes yesterday. He had his six pack charter, his first mate, and his limit. He didn’t say where he was fishing, but I assumed he was either north of West Sister Island or off Sawmill Creek. That’s where we have been fishing this week. I guess today was an off day though, from the talk I heard. The fellows staying in our suites got 19 walleyes today off Sawmill for 5 people. Yesterday they were fishing in the same area and got 33. All of these guys were drifting and using Weapons. One captain I talked to tonight said his crew only had six walleyes today. He thought the mayflies had effected his catch. He said if you could eat by just opening your mouth and sucking them in why would you chase anything. But he also said his men were not fishermen. That makes a big difference now days. If you are going to drift you really have to be able to feel a extra light bite. The perch are still doing good, although the one guy today said he did good Sunday but not so good Monday. The White Bass are really firing up now. Marcia and I went down to the Light House Sunday night and watched about ten people fishing off the shore, they were catching White Bass pretty good. The Smallmouth Bass have been pretty quiet. I think they are resting after the spawn. Some people think they are still on the beds, because of the cooler water temperatures this spring. There is rain predicted Wednesday morning then clear for the next few days. Good fishing, and good luck. Don. (posted by hiwaybait.com)

Subject: walleye fishing -- June

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some Nice catches were made over the June 8 & 9 week-end. We had 29 walleye on Saturday and 39 Sunday.
Near the Toledo Shipping Channel. This area seems to always hold fish until August.
The Mayfly hatch should begin soon. We're about a week or 10 Days behind on water temp.
When these guys start to hatch walleye go on a feeding binge.
Try mayfly imitations like walleye wiggler, the weapon and other fly type lures.
Remember only an inch of worm. Small is the TICKET. Fish High 5 to 10 count.

E-mail SteppinStone01@yahoo.com
or call ( for best results as we'll be fishing and not close to a computer everyday.)

Subject: Western Basin Update Lake Erie Walleye

The WALLEYE are SNAPPING!!!!The Bite is on we are catching walleye on all the reefs and in the Maumee Bay most are jacks 16 to 22 inch range and some few true pigs in the 10 to 14 pound range. We have been taking limit catches daily as soon as the weather broke in early April. We are going to have another GREAT SEASON as the walleye are everywhere holding on all the reefs, Maumee Bay and along the shore lines this indicates that as soon as the spawn is over the off shore fishing will be ( COWA BUNGA) excellent from now thru early August.

We are running out of Wild Wings Marina.

Call me 0n either phone and or leave a message at home, and I will return your call. When you call the boat phone call twice as a lot of times I don't get to it the first time. I want to thank all of you for a great season last year and I look forward to seeing you back this year! See you soon, COWABUNGA. Capt. Dave .

Subject: Water Back Again!

Hello, it’s Sunday. We are finally having a beautiful day here at lake Erie. After four days of hard wind, cold, and rainy weather we are finally back to normal. The water in this end of the lake came back to normal and all the boats are floating again. Some people are going out fishing today. Most are perch fishing. It is a nice cool fall day. It is about 55 degrees, with a 5 mile an hour wind out of the northwest and the sun is shining. It is surprising how blue the water looks. It cleared up faster than I thought it would. Probably because the strong wind was always out of the west instead of the north east. When the wind is out of the north east it pushes the water in the lake backwards from it’s natural flow and stirs it up a lot more than a west wind. We will probably be catching walleyes, perch, and smallmouth bass again tomorrow. The weather forecast looks good for the next few days. The wind is suppose to be light, sunny, temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s, and no rain till Thursday. It is suppose to be a good weekend. I hope so. Good fishing, and good luck, Don.

Subject: Don't come Fishing

Hello, it’s Friday and the wind is still blowing like crazy. We just had 2 men come into the store from Columbus, Ohio to see about going perch fishing. I thought I had better put a report out and tell everyone what is going on here so you don’t have a wasted trip like they did. I was going to do that, I just hadn’t "got a round to it" yet. Those two guys put a little more urgency to the situation if the weather is that much different between here and Columbus. We have had low water all year here, not any lower than it has been for several years, but low. Now to make it worse, the wind has been blowing hard for two days now and it has blown all the water we did have, out of this end of the lake. I think the water is down about 5 feet from what it was on Tuesday. Most of the boats that were still in the water in their docks are setting on the bottom now. About half of them are still in the water in the back away from the dock. Just the bow is on the bottom, unless the boat was backed into the dock, then the boat is resting on the drive system, (the outboard motor, or the outdrive of and I.O., or the prop and skeg of an inboard). There isn’t anything any of us can do about them now. If someone was watching the boat all night and day as the water went out, they could have kept letting lines out to keep it floating "if" there was enough water left to float it, which there isn’t for most of them. So, don’t come up here to move your boat, it is too late now, you’ll just wait for the water to come back like the rest of us, or expect to go out in the lake fishing, because there isn’t enough water in the marinas and channels to get your boat to the lake. If you trailer your boat, there isn’t enough water at the ramp to float your boat, and if your boat is docked at a dock, chances are it is setting on the bottom. The only water in East Harbor Bay and West Harbor Bay is in the boating channel. All the rest of the bay is dry. There in no water in East Harbor except a little down the middle of the channel. West Harbor is the same way. Mazurik’s Ramp is dry too. It is the worst low water any of us have ever seen here. They are probably having flooding in the east end of Lake Erie. Also the water in the lake is just pure mud. It is all yellow and brown. The fish aren’t going to start feeding until the mud gets out of the water. Like I always say, if you were eating, wouldn’t you wait until you didn’t have to eat mud with your food. Hope this helps you. Soon as things get better I will let you know. Good luck, and good fishing. Don.(compliments of hiwaybait.com)

Subject: Island area western basin report

Hello, it’s Tuesday morning, and it is raining again. I don’t know about anywhere else, but we sure have had a lot of rain this fall. It seems like it has rained everyday in October. Most of the month we have had some wind with the rain too. Today it is windy too. According to the weather predictors, it looks like it might straighten out today sometime, and then be a lot more stable for the next 5 or 6 days. We are catching walleyes when we can get to them. For about a week now, some of the charters are about the only ones fishing. They are catching on those days when the wind isn’t too bad, and not catching on the windy days because the water is too stained. My good buddy and friend since high school, Ed and his wife Beth Jennings, dropped in to stay with us for a few days last week. They have lived in Florida for the last 35 years. He is a bass guide and they both fish the Florida circuit of the Guys and Dolls Bass Tournaments. My brother-in-law, Larry Lambert took them out fishing here a couple of days. It was a little windy, but they couldn’t stay for a better day. They got their limit of perch to take home with them, and Beth caught a nice walleye. The size is still a controversy. Beth says it was 25 to 28" long and weighed about 5 to 8 pounds, Ed said it was more like 20" long and weighed more like 2 lb. Larry who netted the fish, and has netted a lot of walleyes, said it was about 22 to 23" long and weighed about 3 to 4 lb. I’m just glad they were able to get out and had a good time. We’ll see them this winter and do some bass fishing. The perch fishermen are catching limits on the days when we have a off shore wind (Southerly). They are just fishing off shore about a half mile all along the shore right here from East Harbor to Cedar Point. The smallmouth bass are still doing well too. Good fishing, and good luck. Hello, it is Thursday morning. It is raining here today. The wind is out of the south and it is blowing about 10 mph. Not to bad. It hasn’t been real good weather for about a week now. The wind has been blowing a little too much for one thing. Some people have been fishing, they are catching perch in spite of the weather. The walleye fishermen have been catching some big ones when they can get to them and the water isn’t too stained. They are still fishing for them off Sawmill Creek about 2 to 6 miles. The water is still stained out there so the fishing is a little tough. I think the drifters are doing better than the trollers right now. It was the other way around last week. If we could just get a couple of days of calm winds we could start catching better again. The smallmouth are doing real well. Several big ones. We had a Fish Ohio Walleye yesterday turned in by Mel from Mansfield. It was 32 " long and weighed 10 ½ lb. He said he caught it and five others off Huron. He said he was 16 miles east of his dock at East Harbor. I would like to say Hi to my cousins Bob and Judy Mitchell, and Bonnie and her new hubby, Don. They visited us for the first time the other day, and we would like to invite them back for a boat ride some day. Hope this helps some of you. The weather is always questionable in the spring and the fall. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.

Subject: island area lake Erie western basin report.

Hello, it’s Wednesday afternoon. It is a beautiful day. Lots of people fishing today. We have been catching perch like crazy. We have had shiner minnows everyday, and not too many stores have consistently had them like we have so we have been extra busy. That is what has kept me from posting very many reports. I have has so many e-mails and requests in the store for another report that I just took the time to do it. Sorry. I know, since I started posting these reports that a lot of people have been reading them to help them plan their trip. That is why I started doing this, because I am here and you are there. All I have to do is look out the window and ask a few questions of my customers. Well the perch are phenomenal, lots of big ones, and plenty of them. It really helped when the Division of Wildlife put the limits on perch, both for sportfishing, and Commercial fishermen. I just took my perch down to the fish cleaners that Marcia and I caught yesterday afternoon to get cleaned and our 60 perch weighed 20 ½ lb. The smallmouth bass are really turned on too. Lots of big bass. AND I told you I would put on more reports when we had more to report. Some fishermen are catching WALLEYES east of here. I guess they are fishing just about 5 miles north of Sawmill Creek and Huron, and about 7 or 8 Miles off Marblehead. They are catching mostly big fish. Several 28’s, 29’s, and one I know of that was over thirty inches. I guess some have been caught drifting but most have been caught trolling with Stinger Spoons. That is good news. Now we have all the species biting. I WILL post more information on the walleyes as it comes in. The only trouble is it is 80 degrees today, but I guess there is a front coming tomorrow and then it is going to turn cold. They say it is going to have trouble getting to 50o Sunday. I hope those weather guessers are wrong. I don’t want to take my shorts off yet. I guess it is that time of year though. The cold weather will help the walleye fishing. Just as long as we don’t have too much wind. I don’t have to much information on the wind yet, except it is starting to get windy now and it is suppose to blow tonight. I don’t know after that. As soon as I hear or see something I WILL post it. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.

200 Perch days no Problem.. (" Weather Permitting") ...
Lake Erie Yellow Perch fishing has been super this fall .. Almost anywhere water depths 25 - 32 foot seem to work best.
We fished East of Kellys' Island Fri. 28. and Sat. 29. Boat limits both days.
We need some cooler weather for the BIG Walleye to start their fall Migration back to the Island area. Water temps need to cool about 8 more degrees. 2- 3 weeks.
Late Oct. and early Nov. can be the best Time to catch your limit of Trophy Walleye. Hope to see you soon.. And fair weather to you.

Subject: western lake Erie report

Hello, it is Thursday. We have been having good fishing here in the west end of Lake Erie. Especially the perch. My wife, Marcia and I have been out two days this week. We went out Tuesday, about a mile east of the green buoy north east of Kelleys Island. We have fished there before and did good. We had our 60 perch in 45 minutes. That is a record for us. We just started catching them as soon as we got our lines in the water. Usually it takes about twenty minutes to get them started. My first line in the water I had a double. (In case you are not an avid perch fisherperson, a double is two fish caught at the same time on the same line on one rod). I almost always fish with two rods. Then on the other rod I caught a triple. (that’s three fish on the same rod). I use Bear Claw clips that you stack on your line up and down and then put your snelled hooks on the clips. Then Marcia started catching too. It was non stop up and down, taking fish off, clicking the counter, opening the fish cooler door, baiting hooks, and dropping back down to the bottom. When you fish with two rods, you let one line go down and set on the bottom while you are baiting up the other one. As soon as you open the bail and let the second line go to the bottom, you pick up the first rod, take up most of the slack, then just set the hook, there is usually a perch or two with the bait in their mouth just waiting for you to set the hook. You bring those fish up, take them off, bait up, and start it back down, then set the hook on the other rod. I use a heavy sinker (1 ½ oz.) so it goes to the bottom fast, and stays in one place, like an anchor. I is a fun way to fish for me, it does keep you busy, but that is what I like. Some people might not want to work that hard when they fish. We took our fish to the fish cleaners and we had 15 lb. for 60 perch. Yesterday we went out again, we went right back to the same spot. We didn’t get them started as fast and the fishing wasn’t as fast and furious as the first day. We did real good though. We caught our fish in two hours, and we had 21 lb. for 60 perch. We had consistently bigger fish the second day. They were all 8, 9, and 10 inches long with an occasional 11" and one 12". We had a good two days and got some fish for the freezer. They will taste good this winter. It is suppose to rain tonight and blow out of the north east at 15 to 20 knots. Could be a little windy Friday. It is suppose to calm down Friday some time. Looks like we are going to have a good weekend. Highs in the low 70’s, light winds and partly cloudy. There are a few people fishing for walleyes. They are catching fish. Haven’t heard of too many limits. They are either trolling or drift fishing over the shoals and reefs. Haven’t heard anything about the fall walleyes east of here yet. The bass are really turned on now. No big fish , but a lot of them. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.

Subject: Western Basin island area Lake Erie

Hello, it’s Friday morning. Thought I would do a quick report on the weather and the fishing here. We have slowed down on the walleye fishing this week. Most people are perch, and smallmouth bass fishing. Some of the die hard walleye fishermen, and some of the charters are still walleye fishing and catching. Most of them are trolling or drifting and casting over the reefs. They are catching fish but not as fast or the numbers that we were earlier last month. The walleye fishing should pickup later this month when more people get their freezer full of perch, and the walleyes start feeding up for the winter. The perch fishing has just been fantastic. Lots of big perch, in a lot of good spots. Haven’t heard any bad reports on perch. The smallmouth bass catching has really turned on too. One example, Kevin Lueder, Paul Johnson, and their buddies from Chicago Heights, Ill., are here staying in one of our suites for a few days. They brought their own boats but chartered with Captain Jim Fofrich the first day. Then for the next 3 days they will fish out of their boats, after Jim was good enough to get them started. They say they do this all of the time and it works well for them. Yesterday they went over to Chickenolee Reef, and Kelleys Shoal and caught 70 bass and 4 walleyes. They said the bass averaged 2 ½ lb. with 2 that weighted 4 ½ lb. The walleyes averaged 2 ¼ lb. They said they caught most of the bass on a Carolina rig and soft craws. They said they caught their walleyes on weight forward spinners and Weapons both baited with worms. I would say, those boys had one of those great fishing days that you don’t really know how important it is until years later, and you haven’t done that well since. The weather looks like it is going to be good this weekend, with a chance of showers or thunderstorms in the evening. Good fishing, and good luck. Don. (Compliments of hiwaybait.com)

Subject: Western basin island area fishing

Hello, I know all of you readers will be glad to see a new report. It is Thursday afternoon here at Lake Erie. We are having excellent weather. Sorry for the big gap in the reports. We went to New York on Lake Ontario and caught 9 big salmon, then a couple of days later we went on a little mid-summer vacation, to the NASCAR races in Bristol Tenn., before the fall fishing season begins. The fall season is always so busy and stressful because of the minnows and perch fishing, and the soft craws and bass fishing. Also last year we had an excellent walleye season too. The minnows are the biggest challenge in the fall. It is hard to get what you want, when you want them, keep them alive until you get them sold, and to know how many to order so you don’t run out, all according to the weather. We have been cleaning all of our extra tanks, and filling them with water, getting the aerators working and installed in the tanks, so they will be ready for the extra minnows we have ordered for this holiday weekend, because it looks like it is going to be a dandy. We are catching perch like crazy. Al Sowards who works in the store went perch fishing with Larry Lambert Tuesday. They got their 60 perch. He said they caught 90% of their fish on Golden shiners. They took both lake shiners and golden shiners with them, but the perch just liked the goldies better. I could see how that could be, this time of the year, because the lake shiners (emerald shiners) are small, and soft, and don’t stay on the hook very good. The goldies are just the right size and they are tougher, and they shine too. So I went out with Larry Lambert yesterday. We had our limit in 2 ½ hours. We were fishing north east of Kelleys Island about 4 miles. I found the same thing, before we quit with our limit I found myself testing with both kinds of shiners. I was catching more perch on the goldies. We had 16 lb. for 57 fish. Al and Larry had 18 lb. for 60 fish. Larry and I were in by 11:00 AM so we took our fish to the cleaners and went out fishing for walleye. We caught 3 perch then threw a couple back Trolling for walleyes. Oh, I almost forgot, we got our fish counted by the Division of Wildlife. Two very nice officers were very interested in how many perch we kept. They counted 57, we were lucky we miscounted in our favor. We fished for about 4 hours east of Rattlesnake Island about 2 to 4 miles. We caught two walleyes. We were dragging too much junk on our spoons all day. The walleye couldn’t hit the spoons because there was something like a perch, tiny walleye, grass or white bass on them. Larry and I were laughing on the way in, wouldn’t it be funny if those same two officers would check us when we got in and saw those 3 perch. We could tell them we didn’t have our limit the first time out so we went out to get them and caught 2 walleyes too. We had a great day though. The weather was just perfect, beautiful sculptured clouds in the sky, just enough wind to make it comfortable, and we saw the tall ship THE NIAGRA sail by. That’s the ship that Admiral Perry won the "Battle Of Lake Erie" with and saved us all from British rule. It is docked and owned by the City of Erie Pennsylvania, and is seen in this area once or twice a year traveling to events around the lake. It is a wonderful sight to see sailing. Well it looks like we are going to have great weather for the weekend. The perch are easy to catch. The bass are biting good. And there are a few walleyes around. Let’s go fishing. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.(compliments of hiwaybait.com)

Subject: Island area of western basin of lake Erie

Hello, it is Wednesday afternoon. We are still catching fish even though it is hot and muggy. The air temperature is suppose to get close to 95 degrees today. It would be a little too hot for me to fish today, but we had quite a few people going. Most of them were going early so they could get in early before it got to hot. We were really busy this morning from 5:30 AM, till 8:00. Now we have mostly shoppers getting ready to go fishing when it cools down a little. Several people were telling us that they caught walleyes up north west of Rattlesnake Island. They were drifting using gold weight forward spinners, and bottom bouncers with worm harnesses. The Mayfly harnesses and the Weapon were working too. Most of the charter captains are doing well too. I heard all 4 of the Double-D charter boats out of Fox Haven South Marina, had their limit of walleyes yesterday and were back into the marina before noon. Our lodging guest, Brad Kelley and his family, from Ostrander, Ohio said they had 15 walleyes yesterday, and he said they lost as many off the hook as they got in the boat. He said they were taking 25 lb. of fish home, and they had an excellent time. They were going to the beach today and then heading home. The perch fishermen are just killing the perch. Almost everyone in the store in the last week said they caught their limit of perch. They all have their favorite spots. I guess it is time for me to give my yearly seminar on shiner minnows, because most people know that they need shiners to fish for perch in Lake Erie, but are confused as to what they are or what they look like. Also some of the bait stores around the lake over the years, have tried to fool people into taking chubs or fathead minnows when they couldn’t get lake (emerald) shiners, by calling them other names, like Minnesota Golds or brown shiners, etc. The truth is shiners have scales, and fatheads and creek chubs don’t. That is the difference! That explains why some days the chubs don’t catch perch as fast as shiners. Some days the type of minnows you have makes absolutely no difference. The reason bait stores have trouble getting wild emerald shiners in the summer is because when the shiner minnows spawn, they die, just like salmon. And right now they are spawning. So all of the big shiners have died and all we have now is the spawn which we call pin heads. They are to small to use for bait so far. We have not been able to get wild lake shiners, for perch fishing, now for about two weeks. So, for about 10 years now, we have been buying domestic golden shiners for perch fishing, instead of creek chubs or fatheads, when we can’t get wild lake shiners. The goldies have been working really well. Most of our regular customers are getting familiar with them. They know they catch fish well. Some people, including me, prefer to take them perch fishing rather than wild shiners for several reasons. They stay on the hook better, they don’t die in the bucket before you get to use them, and they catch fish. Some times you can catch 4 or 5 perch on the same minnow. That means you aren’t baiting your hook as often and you can catch your fish faster. The faster you can get that bait back down to the bottom the better you can keep the perch in that feeding frenzy. Perch are very competitive feeders they are all trying to eat the same bait. That’s why it takes a while to get them started, when you set down and anchor up. You have to get that feeding frenzy started, and then keep it going. I like to use a heavy sinker on my perch rig so I don’t have to wait too long for it to get to the bottom, plus when it gets to the bottom I want it to stay in one place, not keep moving around. We have found that Hi-Way Bait & Tackle cannot sell creek chubs or fatheads. I think it is because we are the fishermen’s first stop, and if we have chubs they leave and go to the next stop and if all they have is chubs they buy them there instead of coming back to us, and I don’t blame them, it saves them a trip. That’s why we have always sold the golden shiner. We always try to have the bait that works the best for our customers at any one time. The only reason we don’t handle the gold shiner all of the time is they are more expensive, so we buy the cheaper lake shiners when we can and they are easier to sell. We had some guys in this morning that said they must have driven 50 miles yesterday looking for lake shiners and finally found some, but they were pin heads, which they bought. They said, luckily they were smart enough to take some of the golden shiners with them too. They said they were going to save the time, gas, and the aggravation today and just get the goldies from us because they worked a lot better anyway. The pin heads were so small and they would just break in half when they tried to put them on the hook, and the goldies were just the right size. What I have been explaining to people recently using the goldies is, if you don’t catch a perch after you set down for twenty minutes, MOVE, just like you would if you were using emerald shiners, because their isn’t any fish down there! The trouble is not the bait that you aren’t familiar with and have confidence in. Once you have confidence in the golden shiner, and you realize how good they catch perch, then you will know to move every time they are not working, because there is no fish in that spot. Sometimes you only have to move a 100 feet. Sometimes you have to go to a different area to get them going. One of our local regular customers has been going out everyday with just one scoop of golden shiners and getting his limit, and he said he is only using about 50 cents worth of gas, and he is in by ten. I just saw on the local weather channel that it is suppose to cool down starting Friday. It is suppose to be hot and muggy again tomorrow, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms, then start cooling down Friday, and be nice for Saturday and Sunday. Good fishing, and good luck. Subject: Good weather coming

Hello, it’s Friday morning. I thought I would at least take the time to give you faithful readers an up date on the weather . We had a thunderstorm last night and this morning early, and it rained until about 9:30. We really needed it too. It is still cloudy, but we are not suppose to get any more rain for the next several days. At least through the weekend. We had a little slow spell there about a week and a half ago, with the walleye fishing, when it got so hot. It warmed the water up to 78 degrees, then we had a northeast wind for two days and it cooled back down too fast and the walleyes slowed down for a few days, but we are catching better now. We were still catching then but it was tuff with the water temperature changing so fast. We are still catching in the same places we were before the slowdown. Basically in the flats out west of the Bass Islands. The perch are still turned on. The bass are a little hard to find. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.(compliments of hiwaybait.com)

Subject: Western Basin Walleyes are SNAPPING !!!!!

As I said early in March . I marked walleye all over and my boxes have backed it up. Friday , Sat. and Sun. all our trips took limits. Sat. and Sun. full crews both our boats caught limits 42 walleyes,by 8:00 am so we turned Smallies for a few hours!!! Walleyes are bitting all over the Western Basin, most all are catching limits just some catch them sooner than others. I have caught from Toledo Light to Middle Sister to Camp Perry Firing Range in the last week. Most walleyes are suspended and feeding, mid range fish. # 4 Hammered Indiana Blades , gold seems to be the best. The Lake Temp is at its peak for agressive feeding walleyes now and will remain in their thru at least mid August.

Sincerely,
Capt. Dave

Subject: Island area Lake Erie

Hello, it’s Sunday morning. (At least it was when I started writing). I accidentally erased it once and it was a good report too. I’ll try again. I don’t usually write as often this time of year because there aren’t as many changes as there are early in the season. In the summer the weather is more stable. The fishing is pretty much in the same areas, so there just isn’t as much to write about. This year the fishing is much better than it has been for, (some people say fifteen years), I say for at least 5 years. The walleyes have never slowed down since we started this spring. The average size is not as big as in the spring, but they are easier to catch. Most people are catching walleyes. If they are not it is their fault. If you are one of those people who are not catching, come in to the store and I am sure we can help. We have helped several people that were having trouble catching walleyes in this cleaner water. I helped a fellow yesterday that has been a good customer of Hi-Way Bait before my wife and I acquired it 10 years ago. He said he hadn’t caught a walleye for the last two years, so I gave him my special fishing lesson to help catch walleyes in this water that has been cleaned up by the zebra muscles for the last 7 or 8 years. We thought we were smart and good back then, when the fishing was easy. We didn’t know it was easy till we got the clean water, now we have to be smarter fisherman. He came in this morning and told me he caught two walleyes yesterday. He said they weren’t very big ones though. I told him that you have to be patient, now that you have the feel of the bite, the law of averages will get you some bigger fish. Frances Blanton, from Greenup, Kentucky, an avid fisherman on the Ky. Side of the Ohio river was fishing with his buddies on his brother-in-law, Woody Campbell’s boat. Woody is from Dayton, Ohio and docks his boat here at Channel Grove Marina. Frances caught two Fish Ohio fish on his third trip ever to the big lake. He had a 27" sheephead, and a 28 ½" walleye. He is getting the walleye mounted. Most of the walleyes are being caught west of the Bass Islands now. Yesterday there were about 4 hot spots. These keep changing from day to day so it is best to stop in when you get here and we will try to send you to them, and tell you what the fish were caught on, and how. There are some nice smallmouth bass being caught now too. Larry Lockel said he caught a 19" and a 20" bass while catching walleyes on Mouse Island Reef yesterday. The perch are hanging in there too. We had a customer this morning who came from Sandusky to buy shiners because they didn’t have any over there. He said he has been catching 8 to 10" perch off the Cedar Point causeway by Battery Park Marina, in Sandusky Bay. Some other spots I heard today were off Cedar Point, East of Kelleys Island off the airport, and around Green and Rattlesnake Islands. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.(compliments of hiwaybait.com)

HOT HOT HOT. THE WALLEYE FISHING IS THE BEST IT'S BEEN IN TWO OR THREE YEARS. WE FISHED 7-13, 7-14, 7-15 AROUND THE NORHT SIDE OF WEST SISTER AND CAUGHT LIMITS EVERY DAY, AND THE FISH WERE BIGGER, AVERAGING 2 TO 3 POUNDS WITH SOME 3 1/2 POUNDERS. I HAD A CHARTER FOR SUNDAY 7-15, WE FOUND A LARGE SCHOOL OF FISH JUST WEST OF TURTLE CREEK ABOUT 4 MILES. THE FISH WERE SMALLER, BUT FOR A SHORT BOAT RIDE THE NETS WERE FLYING ALL DAY. THEY NEVER STOPPED BITING. EVERYONE I TALKED TO LIMITED IN A SHORT TIME. WE DID CATCH A COUPLE OF 3 POUNDERS IN THERE THOUGH, SO THERE WERE BIGGER FISH IN THERE IF YOU WANTED TO THROW BACK THE SMALLER ONES. NOW IS THE TIME TO CONTACT A CHARTER CAPTAIN FOR A GREAT TRIP ON LAKE ERIE IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE BOAT FOR THE LAKE, OR YOU JUST WANT TO FISH WITH ONE OF THE PROFESSIONAL GUIDES. CONTACT US AND HAVE A GREAT DAY OF FISHING HOWEVER YOU DO IT.

Subject: Excellent fishing in Lake Erie

Hello, it’s Wednesday morning. The 4th of July was hectic around here and I am sorry I neglected my report. I know you people are reading it and using it to plan your vacations and fishing trips, because I have started getting emails asking for a new one. One reason I haven’t been writing much, is because there hasn’t been too many changes in the weather or the fishing now that summer has finely has arrived. It is all good, the fishing is excellent and the weather has been good about everyday. Some people say the fishing is as good as it has been for 15 years. Of course we still have those days when the conditions are not the best for each fisherperson and the way they like to fish. Some days are good for drift fishing and some days are not. Some days are better for trolling than others, but I think the trollers are consistently catching more fish, because they can catch fish on those calm days we have in the summer when it is tough for us people who drift only. My wife and I went out to Niagara Reef Sunday afternoon and caught 5 walleyes. We didn’t get out there till 2:00 and the wind had quit by then and we had a rough time catching. If we were set up to troll we could have started trolling and got our fish because we saw trollers all around us catching fish. We had a good day though, it was just nice being out there after the busy week we had. The walleyes are a little closer than they were a couple of weeks ago. Most of the walleyes being caught are west of here, around the firing range off Camp Perry, north of Niagara reef, east of a line from West Sister to Middle Sister Islands. And up along the border around F and G Can. (out in the "flats"). The weather for the next four days looks good for fishing, not for the dry conditions we have here. We need the rain. Of course I would rather have dry grass, that doesn’t need mowed than not be able to go fishing because it was raining or the grass need mowed. Stop in the store when you get here and we will try to improve your fishing results. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.

Subject: Western Basin Walleyes Are Snapping

Limit, Limit , Limit thats whats happening all over the Western Basin of Lake Erie. Anywher from Toledo to Detroit to Middle Sister!!! Walleye fishing has been and will be fantastic thru August. The magic water temp is 68 degrees, to 78 and we are getting close to 68 now and the bite is on. The lake temp. is behind this year which means the bite will go thru August and will fire the Sept., Oct. Hogs up too!! This has been the best Walleye fishing we have
seen in about 6 years. I am marking walleye all over the lake and the catches back it up. Sincerly Capt. Dave www.coevannacharters.com 419-898-4545

Subject: Good Fishing in Erie

Hello, it’s Thursday afternoon, we had kind of a slow day yesterday. I think a lot of people are waiting for the long holiday, we have coming, to go fishing. I went fishing yesterday with a son and grandson. Just the three of us, papaw, son and grandson. The grandson Ryan is 9 years old and would enjoy perch fishing. I thought since there wasn’t much wind we would do better perch fishing. I caught a 13" perch when we first sat down. That sometimes a bad thing, to catch a big fish right away. Then sometimes you don’t catch very good from then on. But with that fish I won the dollar for the big perch, I also won a dollar for the first fish. And Neil won the dollar for the biggest fish with a sheephead. I think he also caught the most fish. I had him way down at first, but when he got the hang of it he smoked me. We quit and went to the Town Pump on Kelleys Island for lunch. They have the best food. Then we went up to the Kelleys Country Store and I showed them the automatic Live Bait Vending Machine that Hi Way Bait & Tackle has over there. Then we all played a game of miniature golf. Neil beat me by 10 strokes, and Ryan by twenty. We had a good time together. Good Quality time. It’s one of those days that you don’t know how important it is until years later when you haven’t had one like it since. Also Ryan will be only 9 once, and I think it is important for him to learn to have the patience it takes to fish and to be taught by his dad and grandpa who have learned from their dads. The fishing was slow yesterday, I think because it was sunny and calm. Our boat was going around in circles around the anchor. We caught about 20 perch which we were OK with considering the other fun we had during the day. I put the Marcy-D, our boat, in last week but this was her first trip. She did just fine. She is an old 1966, 25 foot Lyman, that we put a new motor in about ten years ago. She is a beautiful boat that we are really fond of. She sounds good too. I hope you don’t mind my ramblings. We had a couple stop in from Illinois today that wanted to thank us for this report we do. They said they stopped in just because they wanted to thank us for the report and that they enjoyed reading it and they felt it helped them a lot. That is why we do it. To help you the reader that lives away, and if it helps you hopefully it will help us. Catching fish and having some good time is the name of the game, we are all in this together. The weather is suppose to be good for the holidays, with a chance of thundershowers in the evening Sunday and Monday. The water temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees. I just talked to Jack Tibbel on the land line and he said his boats have been getting close to or getting their limit of walleyes everyday down north of Port Clinton about 3 or 4 miles out, around the firing range. He said they are not big fish but there are a lot of them. He said his boats are all going for walleyes now. He said last week they had a couple of perch trips that got their limit over the dumping grounds between Marblehead and Cedar Point. Good fishing & good luck. Don.
