Hello Everybody,

Galations 2: Verse 20: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by Faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Well I was on Lake Fairfield today with strong 20-25 miles an hour North winds. Water temps. were 64 around the Lake and in the high 70's in the discharge.

Bass fishing was Fair with about 25 Bass comming to the boat in a half day trip.

Bass were hitting the Nichols Creature in watermelon red and Green Pumpkin pepper and dipping the tails in Spike it Chartruse. Be sure and call David Nichols with Nichols Lures at 903-589-8100 and mention Mattern Guide Service sent you it will really help.

The bite was difficult today with the redfish bite being slow and the Bass. The Carolina Rig with the Nichols Creature was all I could get the Bigger Bass to Hit.

I fished drop offs along sand bars and points in 1-12 feet of water. When you found the Bass they were schooled up tight but in schools.

A carolina rig consist of an egg sinker in about 1/4 to 1/2 ounce put on first with a bead of glass to protect the line attached to a swivel with about a 2 foot leader tied to a 3/0 hook in a wide gap version.

Use about 15 lb. mono for all around line and leader for most cases unless you are in some real giants then beef up to 20 or 25 lb. test.. I like a 7 foot Jeff Friendly Custom rod in a special medium heavy fast tip version. Cast alog the breaks or drop offs around sand bars and point drops and simply drag the egg sinker along. Usually you will feel the line feel heavy or a slight tap just set the hook and try to keep her head down when she jumps.

At Lake Fairfield on days when the North wind is not guting with a cold front blowing in you can catch redfish and Bass on the Nichols Creature rigged this way. I have had days when I caught up to 9 Redfish with 3 over 10 lbs. and the Biggest 15 lbs. with a load of Bigger Bass up to 6-7 Lbs. You know how fishing is some days its chicken and then some days its feathers. Like today I only got 1 redfish up to about 2 lbs.

Deer Hunting starts Saturday and the Lakes are wide open with little or no pressure.

Well good fishing and May God bless if you want to book a trip to Fairfield just give me a call at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. The Spawn begins around January and the Bigger Females move up and that is a really good time to Fish this Lake When other Lakes are in the 40,s to 50,s for water temps and Fairfield is sitting at a warm and toasty 63 degrees.

Great Products that help me every trip out-

Mattern Guide Service on Lake Fairfield
Hello Everybody,

Jesus said I am the Way, the Truth and the Life: No man comes to the Father but by me.

Well as you know the last few cold fronts dropped water temps. So I am on Lake Fairfield today. If you have never fished Lake Fairfield, it is a Power Plant Lake and has a good population of Largemouth Bass and and also been stocked and restocked for years with Redfish. Yes you heard it right.

Redfish in a freshwater Lake.. The Reds in Lake Fairfield have been caught over 40 lbs. but usually on Bass tackle and the same baits I use for Bass are catching reds up to about 4 lbs. as it gets colder the bite gets up to about 10-15 lbs.

Water temps were at 72 at daylight on most the Lake and up to around 78 durring Mid-day hours.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is only one ramp open because of the low water and it is real iffy. I have a single axle and have to go baxck just enough to get the boat off and on without dropping off the end of the ramp.

I ewas there today and made it in and out nut doubt if tandem axle rig could make it out. The water came up about a foot after the heavy rains but still could use a couple feet for safe boat ramp.

Bass were good up to about 4 lbs. as were the reds. Both were biting Carolina rigged Nichols Creature baits in Watermelon red. Off points and sand bars that were near deeper water. From 4-8 feet. Nichols Chatterboxs in Blue Shad caught Bass up to around 3 lbs. fished off Main Lake points in the morning bite.

Wacky rigged Nichols salty mothers sinkers in Green pepper which is a senko type bait caught good up along reeds in 2-3 feet. Crankbaits 6-8 feet divers worked along breaks or drop offs in 6 - 10 feet caught real good Fish up to 4 lbs. as well as the carolina rig did. Colors best were black back and chartruse body.

Caught about 35 Bass and 6 reds today from daylight till 3:00 pm.

Nichols baits is one of the fastest and hottest bait companies on the tournament trail today. To get you an order or catalog just call Mr. Nichols at 903-589-8191.

Be sure and tell Him Mattern Guide Service sent you it really makes a difference.

If you would like to book a trip on Fairfield just call me at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. God bless and Good fishing.

Hello Everybody,

Joshua 1:8 This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Well you know the Bass are going through a temperture change and they respond to different baits as that happens. More to horizontal baits than vertical. Water temps. have dropped into the 60's at daylight warming up to the 70's durring the day.

Bass have been good up to almost 8 lbs. on crankbaits in smaller patterns colors vary according to water color. Clear waters near dam good colors have been baby bass and chartruse darker back in black or junebug.

Whites and Chartruses with dark backs up North if you can get into the channels up there.

The creek channels and boat docks have been the Biggest Bass producers. One Boat house produced a Bass up to almost 8lbs. She bit a Nochols creature bait rigged Texas fished in a brush pile under the boathouse.
We just took on another sponsor and His name is David Nichols with Nochols Lures. You have gotta try some of His baits they are killer.

Call him at 903-589-8100 and tell him Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service sent you to him.

I am getting into alot of His new baits like the creature bait and the New Texas craw which will be producing a many tournament check for me I am sure. His spinnerbaits and jigs are unreal and hundreds of tournaments have been won by them.

When you are fishing the boat houses concentrate on boathouse in at least 5 feet of water, the ones near 10 or better are ideal and work those crankbaits alongside and between the boathouse also for the those bigger sacks. I switch those hooks out with a short shank triple grip in red on the front and a triple grip on the back. When you hook a bass over 3 lbs. to 8lbs. you really need them to boat the fish when she pulls so hard to get free.

The Nichols creature flipped into those bushes under docks in watermelon red has been hot. try spikeing the tails in chartruse dye to help if they seem offish that will help you catch a few more Bass.

I want to thank Phatom Tackle and Jeff Friend Custom Rods and now Nichols Lures for their sponsorship.

If you want to book a trip to Palestione or Sam Rayburn or Lake Nacodoges. And do not forget Lake fairfield after it gets colder just give me a call for booking at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. Thanks and good fishing

Hello Everybody,

John 8: Verses 30-32; As He spake these words, many believed on Him(JESUS). Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him. If you continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed, And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

Well this Week-end was great with alot of different patterns working. Friday Rodney Rowe and I went and braved the North end even after that sand bar episode I said I would not go back till the rains come.

Those green fish were calling to me but made it in again and we caught about 30 Bass up to about 2.5 lbs. they were smaller than usual. When I was heading out I met Shannon MCcown comming out and He had caught a monster Bass about 8.7 lbs. on a Chartruse black back crankbait, shallow running. We weighed it for Him and helped take pictures then He released the Giant to fight another day.

Way to go Shannon. Our Bass were all caught on cotton candy wacky worms in about 6-8 feet in a creek channel. I left the North end and Fished Mid-Lake the rest of the day and caught another 25 Bass or so with Mr. Rowe on drop shot rigs fishing green pumpkin worms in about 6-15 feet. That was a real treat. Water temps. were in the low 70,s.

Saturday went out and there were tournament boats everywhere so I put in at the Dam with The Hager's. Fritz and His fine 3 young boys. Those are some fishing boys.

We went out and fished drop shot rigs with watermelon candy worms in about 6-12 feet and caught about 15 bass maybe more up to about 3.5 lbs. The bite was a little off because of the Cold front that came in but still had a great time. Watching Fritz Jr. fight that 3.5 lber. it was his first drop shot Bass and His biggest. Pray for rain for our great fishery here at Lake Palestine.

If you want to book a trip just call us at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. Thanks and God bless. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.

Hello Everybody,

Philippines 3: 13-14, Brethren I count not myself to have apprehended: But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

I press toward the Mark for the Prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Well Bass fishing has been great to good this week with water temps in the low 70's at daylight getting up to 80 durring the heat of the day.

Lake Palestine is low, low, low. The North end is a Maze of shallow sandbars and dangerous stumps. As well as I know it I took The Dobsons who were down from Houston and Tyler out for 2 days, some great bunch of guys I might add. I had went into a dfficult hole of Bass the week before and found a stringer of over 20 lbs. on wacky worms in about 2 hours. So When my clients got into the boat I had no idea how fast the water was dropping in a week.

I got the clients in the boat and headed for my holes in the North end and wam beached my boat on a sand bar. Spent 3 hours trying to move that boat with the big motor and so on, Finnally I went and got a come along and wench that boat a good 40 yards to enough water to get going again.

There was an angel standing by that sand bar waiting for me when I ran upon it and His name was Shawn T. Wildt. He helped me and ran me to get a come along and back till I got her out. Praise God.

Forgetting those things that are behind, Amen. I started to forget about that hole and go to mid-lake but I was so close so I finally figured out how to get into that creek channel and found my way there.

Mr. Fred Dobson and Grandson, Kyle caught about 40 Bass up to 4.5 lbs. the bite was great from 11.00 am. till 4:00 pm. Kyle caught his biggest bass weighing in at about 4.0 lbs.

We caught fish on cotton candy senko type baits rigged wacky style in 4- 7 feet.

The next day I went back with the Father Dewayne and we caught about 15 bass up to 5.5 lbs. with Dewayne getting one up to 5 lbs.

I ruined a water pump by the sand going through the engine but it is in the Boat Center being repaired. The Dobsons tipped me very well covering the water pump and paid me full price for both days. We press on.

Oh what Men will do to catch that elusive green fish call the Largemouth Bass.

I am on some safer fish now so if you want to book a trip just call me at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203 Thanks and May God Bless Fred Dobson and Shawn Wildt.

Hello Everybody,

Romans 4: Verses 20 -22: He staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able to perform.
And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Well it was good to see the air temps as well as the water temps cool off from the tremendous heat. Water temps are between 83-85 degrees at Lake Palestine. The water level is lower than I have ever seen it since I have been fishing this Lake for almost 13 years now.

As water temps cool the shad start moving into the creeks and back areas off the Lake and the Bass follow with schooling Bass tipping off the whereabouts of the larger ones nearby. Keep your eyes peeled for shad jumping and fleeing from feeding Bass and you can locate some really good Bass.

Bass were caught up to almost 6 lbs. and about 20 Bass per day is the norm. Bass are hitting white chatterbaits and rattle traps in chrome bodied baits around the edges of the creek channels close to the shad.

Bigger Bass have been hitting wacky worms fished along Creek Channels in about 6-8 feet deep. Good colors are Bubblegum looking colors also watermelon red and watermelon candy. As you move into the mid day bite work them slowly and watch your lin for the Bigger Bass just inhale them and start swimming. You have to slow down and work them slow.

I use special custom rods made by Jeff Friend of Friendly Custom Rods. His rods have helped me place better this year in the tournaments I fish than any other year. You can call him at 903-584-3594, Tell him Don sent ya. I have a few sponsors not because I went looking for them but I have used their products and proven them on the Guiding Job and the tournament trails I fish.

Phantom Tackle is the other sponsor I have. In all the tournaments and when I am Guiding I am using His baits most of the time when I fish Plastics. Once He called me before He was a sponsor and I told him how the Bass were eating His plastics right off the hook and He told me other products are using a synthetic garlic oil but He has a 1000 acre farm where he raises real garlic and uses it in pure garlic oil in all his scented produtc you can reach him at phantom tackle .com

Fishing will get better even with the low water levels as the Bass fatten up for the comming winter. Find the shad and you will find the Bass. Thanks and May God Bless Ya. Don mattern Sr with Mattern Guide Service. If you want to book a trip just call 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203 and we will schedule you in.

Hello Everybody,

Proverbs: 20-22 - My son attend to my words incline thine ear unto my sayings . Let them not depart from thine eyes: keep them in the midst of thy heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

Well as hard to believe as it is the Bass fishing is really as hot as the weather. Topwater bites will produce early with shad patterned baits such as buzzbaits and poppers, and tiny torpedoes in blue back chromes.

Bass are really chasing shad and feeding on them with schools scattered across the Lake. Main Lake is producing Bass up to over 5 lbs. in 4 - 6 feet of water on chatterbaits in shad patterns. Just chunk and wind and when you find those smaller schools busting shad slow down and work a little deeper in the same areas.

Plastics are hot also especially right now after the heat gets really hot. Worms in your watermelon colors on a drop shot rig, Texas rig, and Texas rig are catching some really good Bass.

Water temps are running about 85-89 degrees and the Lake is as low or lower than I have ever seen this Lake. The North end is all most impossible to get in except for those who know how to navigate their way in to the sweet spots.

I have really been blessed by the Lord to take a 2nd and 4th place finish on Cedar Creek tournaments in July and August 5th on Sam Rayburn The Lord Jesus blessed me with my first 1st pace finish on Sam Rayburn last week with a 21.09 lb. stringer and 6.86 Big Bass win also. I had 2 dead fish which deducted 1 lb. penalty or I would have had 22.09.

Sponsors that made these tournaments possible are diffinately : Jeff Friend with Friendy custom rods out of Neches, Texas.
His rods made all the difference and Phantom Tackle who makes a worm made in pure garlic oil instead of artificial garlic chemical scents that are used in the others. You can find and order from them by pulling their names up on google search .

Well God is good and thats no lie and if you need to book a trip contact me by e-mail or phone call 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203 to book a guided trip. Thanks and May God Bless you in your fishing. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service

Hello Everybody,

Without Faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is acting opon God's Word.

Well hello everybody Bass fishing has been tough this last week with Bass only up to about 3 lbs. being caught. Alot of schooling action from smaller Bass on shad which makes for some great action but the Bigger Bass have been laying low.

Lake levels have dropped about 2 feet in the last 2 weeks making the overall Lake about 6 feet low. Bass have been hitting poppers and the Frog bite has been very poor lately but you know fishing the next day the Bigger Bass could go on the feed and begin to get under those smaller Bass deeper in the creek channels making for some awesome summer action.

Boathouses are holding some Bass and creature type baits in your many different watermelons have been catching. The Sweet beaver and baby brush hog have been working for us.

Wacky worms in watermelons and bubblegum type colors have been working best lately and small crankbaits in black back with chrome bodies. Had one trip this week on Richland Chambers Lake and caught many white Bass on Little george's in chrome and one Hybrid Striper up to about 7 lbs.

If you want to book in a trip just call me or e-mail me. Call 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203.
May God Bless. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.

Hello Everybody,

Deuteronomy 11:11 But the Land whither you go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven.

Bass fishing is great right now with less pre-fishing for tournaments and tournament pressure the Bass are getting less spoked and biting well again. The morning bite has been awesome with cklients getting a Bass up to 8.5 lbs. this last week on a black frog.

I prefer the Spro frog but the Sumo and Bobbys perfect frog are excellent with Stanleys ribbit frog being preferred by the Bass at times because of its Buzzbait like action. One thing for sure the Bigger Hog Bass love them. When you see that explosion force yourself to hold a second or so to let the Big Bass get that big frog down into his mouth then set the hook hard and get those hooks into his jaw. I have been using 5o lb. spider wire stealth on these frogs to get them out of the heavy vegetation.

Poppers and baby spooks or spook Jrs. in Chrome or Blue back chrome will get bit right now. Because of the hotter weather the shad are schooling in the creek channels durring the hottest part of the day and spinner baits shad imitations in white and chromes will get you bit. Texas crawworms in watermelon red or worms in tequilla sunrise or plum will get some very Big Bites along stumps and cover on ledges of creek channels and around boathouses.

There are so many patterns that will work right now just pull your secret weapons out and work them around channels and points or heavy vegetation and the boathouses and hold on.

Have a safe and blessed 4th and God Bless ourmen of the armed forces who are making it possible to be free and put His angels around them as they continue to fight for Freedom.

If you are interested in booking a Guided Trip with me just call 903-724-1203 or 903-478-2633. Thanks and be blessed. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.

Hello Everybody,

Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.

Well the bite has been Average lately with about 15 Bass per day. Bass came to the boat this week up to about 6lbs. with a few in the 4 lb. range.

Bass have been in the creek channel bends in about 5-10 foot for me and around brushpiles around boathouses.

Topwaters early have been getting bit with poppers and tiny torpedoes with chrome blue back being a great color lately.

Frogs in black seem to have caught smaller fish this week than usual but I truly feel tournament pressure has dimmed the bite but most tournaments are over for Lake Palestine and the Bass will get into regular feeding modes and ambush spots they normally are in.

Weighted hooks with craw worms in chartruse pepper have been working as well as wacky worms on same hook. Colors that have worked best are bubblegum type colors and cotton candy.

Texas rigged baby brush hogs or Nichols creature bats in Watermelon red have been excellent also and around boathouses.

With hot temps in the 90's or higher shad will come to the top and schools of Bass along with them. Keep a topwater or rattle trap tied on just for the Bass that are schooling and get to them while they are on top and you can get a couple of them before they go down. Once they go down a crankbait according to the depth of water they are in will get some of those Large Bass laying down under the schoolies. That is alot of Fun.

I have Been really busy this week and clients have been catching some good Bass if you would like to book a Guide Trip just call me at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. Thanks and May God Bless You. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide service.

Hello Everybody,

MARK Chapter 5: 5-6 And He could there do no mighty work, save that He laid His hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
And He marvelled because of their unbief.

Well Bass fishing has been Good. With the morning Bite being the best for the Bigger Bass. Although the Bigger Bass have been taken in the heat of the day in deeper channels around brushy cover.

Water temps are in the 80's and the water level is slowly dropping right now due to the lack of rain.

Morning bite has been Good with Bass up to 7lbs. comming to the boat with several Giants in the 8 lb. class being lost before boating them by clients. A frog bite has been accounting for most of the Bigger bites. In one morning I watched 4 Bass up to over 8lbs. pull free off of one client.

They were hitting a Black Frog. Best made are Sumo, Spro, and Bobby's perfect Frog. When fishing this type of Frog I recommend Braided line about 50 lb. You have to wait after the initial blow up and let That Big Ole Bass get that Frog down in her mouth good then set the Hook much like a worm bite to explain it any better, If you set the hook too soon you will pull it out of Her mouth.

Poppers worked well also in bluegill and shad patterns. Bass over 5 lbs. were brought to the boat and released but one clients broke off a monster of about 8lbs. as she broke him off. He was using 10 lb. test. I recommend no less than 15 lb.

Average days have been about 30 Bass per day up to about 7lbs. The senko type baits and the wacky worms were working in the heat of the day in and around 8-10 foot creek channels. Colors that worked well were bubble gum and watermelons.

Bass also hit crankbaits in white with blue backs in and around creek channels. Adjust the crankbait you use according to the depth and water situation you are fishing. If the water is 8 feet deep and Hydilla is growing off the bottom about 2 feet high use a 4-6 foot crankbait and so on.

With the heat getting up to the 100 mark. Use plenty of Sun screen and drink lots of cold water to hydrate yourselves with sunglasses and caps or hats. The Bass are schooling at midday on shad and they are alot of fun they are usually smaller up to about 3 lbs. and smaller but the Bigger Bass are laying in the channels not far from these smaller Bass picking up on shad that come around them durring the frenzies.

Well gotta go and some of you have called for prices and I have e-mailed you back but for what ever reason your computer rejected my e-mails to reply to you. So if that happened to you just call me. Since I am getting such a large volume of calls for rates etc. I will post them for you guys now.

Full Day is $300.00 per 1 or 2 people extra person $50.00

Half Day #200.00 per 1 or 2 persons extra person $50.00.

I will furnish lures but if I furnish rods and reels it is a $25.oo fee per person.

If you have any questions or you want to book a trip just call me at 903-478-2633 or 903-724- 1203 please leave message on machine because I am on the Lake till late. Thanks and May God Bless. Don Mattern sr. with Mattern Guide Service

Hello Everybody,

God said to Adam Who told thee that thou was naked.Sin entered in and Man lost his covering of God's presence. Through Faith In the finished works of Jesus and His Blood we can recieve the covering again of God's powerful presence and a relationship with Him.

Well what a great week this has been with great Clients and the Bite has picked up again.

You know you can be where the Bass are but what you did last time or the Baits you are used to fishing may not work though the Bass are still there.

Making some changes and being willing to try different things has made more than one check for me durring tournaments or helped me put my clients on fish.

Downsizing your baits can produce some Big Bass that would otherwise just sit and watch your offering go by.

Downsizing topwaters by going to smaller poppers like Yellow Magics or Strike King's spitting King, and downsizing spinnerbaits to 1/4 ounce with 3/8 heads can be deadly.

Or rigging your plastic worms a little different can be the difference from catching just a few to a fantastic day. Wacky rigging your worms can produce where the Texas rigged worm was refused in the same areas. Downsizing your worms from 6 to 4 inch. If you know the Bass are there try to be versitle.

Clients boated Bass up to around 5.5 lbs. but saw at least 5 Bass over 6 lost in one way or the other.

Monday sawe what looked like a 10lber. lost right at the boat. It waqs a Monster Bass and I sure felt for Mr.. Hagar but the Lord was great and a few minutes later He caught the Biggest Bass He had ever caught about 5 1/2 lbs.

His 3 Boys: Jack,Fritz, and Henry ages from 8-6-and 5. The Boys caught some Bass and well little Henry was busy eating everyone elses snacks and when I would set the hook on a Bass He would run up to the front of the boat and fight the Bass. It was something to see.

Bass were hitting senko type baits in bubble gum type colors. When you come to Lake Palestine come armed with at least 15 lb. mono. Bass were staying near channels and drop offs near 5 - 8 feet of water. Water Temps are in the low 80's. The bite is what I consider Fair. But comming Overcast days should produce some fantastic Bass fishing.

May God Bless and if you want to book a trip just give me a caqll at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203. Thanks Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.l

Hello Everybody,

God is our refuge and strength an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the Earth give way and the Mountains fall into the heart of the Sea.

Well this week has been an unusal bite going on. The bite has been slow with about 10 Bass comming to the boat up to 4to 4.5 lbs.

The topwater bite has been off also. Though a client from the Dallas area broke off 2 Big Bass on Plastic Frogs. There are so many variations of Frogs on the Market but I noticed even when I was recently on Sam Rayburn those Bass eat Frogs and they are usually the Bigger Female Bass.

On Sam Rayburn they were working the Ribbit Frogs. (Yum makes a Buzz Frog and Zoom makes a Horny Toad and many others are out in the market. Use a 5/0 Wide Gap Hook and Stanley makes a great Hook just for the Frogs), and reeling them fairly fast over the Pepper grass and Hydrilla and catching some Big Bass.

You know no matter how much you learn you always can learn alot more when it comes to Bass fishing. The Client I had from Dallas this week had a great testimony about what the Lord did in His Marriage to do the impossible. Wow just hearing that testimony was better than catching a 10 lber.

But He was using Frogs and I was using poppers and the Big ones were hitting His Frogs and I watched and learned something about Big Bass and Frogs.

The recent storms that brough Hail and heavy rains through the Wells and Lufkin Areas brought a run off to Lake Palestine and the Lake rose another Foot or so. I like to Fish the Back waters of Flat, Kickapoo, Chimmney Stone, Caney,Ledbetter and Highsaw and Saline Bay and then Boathouses on the Main Lake and some of the above mentioned creeks.

Because of the run off I noticed the Bass were affected where the run off came in and filtered with the rest of the areas in these areas. In a few days things will stabilize and wow what great fishing we will be in for.

Topwater favorites have been Frogs, poppers,Tiny Torpedoes in shad patterns mixeed with blue backs. Watermelon colors on weightless Stinko Type Baits which is made by Phantom Tackle an awesome bait. Chatterbox baits made by Rad and Gambler in White and Bluegill have been working well also. Texas rigged Creature baits in Watermelons have been working in the Channels in these Areas.

Have a Safe memorial Week End. I am Booked through the 29th of May so if you ewant to Book a trip after then just e-mail me or call me at 903-478-2633 or 903-724-1203 and we will book you in for a great day of Bass Fishing.

May God Bless, Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Sevice

Hello everybody,

Fishing has been tremendous this week with Bass comming to the boat over 6 lbs. and several of them. Early mornings have been best and late evenings for some great fishing. Topwaters have been great in shad patterns and as the day gets warmer go deeper with texas rigs throwing watermelon creature baits and worms also black & blues and junebug. There are so many baits that will work now. Your most confident baits or go to baits will produce now but remember Bass feed heavily early and late just like deer move the best in the early and late of the day. What I call low light times of the day. When its lightly raining or overcast they as the Bass will move longer even durring the mid-day.

The Spawn is like the rut you can expect the deer or Bass to be moving at anytime of the day but after the rut or spawn their patterns change to low light and dark. Now is the most predictable time of the year for pattern fishing. Fish shallow early and move deeper as the day goes on. Even deeper water Bass move to the uprise or break to feed on those early and low light times of the day. Their are still a few male Bass guarding Bass fry but for the most part the spawn has ended on Lake Palestine.

Lake Palestine is roughly 25,000 surface acres of water and has everything from florida everglade looking backwaters to wooded fields of water. Boat docks and hundreds of them and open deep water points.

The Stripers and Hybrid stripers are also feeding great in the early morning hours and fish have come to the boat over 10 lbs. They have been hitting spoons jigged fast early and rattle traps in silver blue or silver black. I have been using the 3/4 ounce for big fish over 7 lbs.

White bass or Sandies have been schooling early and then hitting deep on jigging spoons. They are spotty on the Lake you have to look for them they have been staying up for about the first 2-3 hours of the day. Hitting litle goerge's or small spoons or roadrunners.

We also caught crappie this week on minnows under a cork in about 2 feet of water and around boat docks. They sure were good eating. They also bit around bridge pilings and off deep points in about 24 feet of water. They seem to be all over the Lake.

Catfish were caught on freshly netted shad fish around points and channels in about 12 - 18 feet of water. I also caught some under corks while fishing for crappie so I believe you could do the cork thing and catch a mess also.

On Richland Chambers the white Bass or sandies are starting to break loose with catching 100 a day not uncommon. Some on top and then jigging spoons or slabs durring the middle of day.

If you want to book a trip give me a call and I will book you in. Call me at 903-478-2413 or 903-724-0961 or e-mail me at donmattern@risecom.net. Hope to hear from you soon. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service

Hello Everybody,

Fishing has been very good lately on Lake Palestine and Richland Chambers. A summary of this last week on Palestine first.

Water temps have been up and down with cool fronts comming through. The main Lake has been in about the upper 50's to low 60's and in the back of the coves and creeks water temps are from 63-70. The Lake has gone down about 2 feet but overall is still full. Water conditions are excellent right now with good water all over the Lake in clear conditons. The Neches is stained in the upper North but the waters out of the flow of the Neches are excellent.

Bass hit topwaters early with Bass over 6 lbs. comming to the boat. Lots of solid fish hitting texas rigged o plastics in 3- 10 feet of water. Baby brush hogs and tubes also lizards and craws in watermelons and black and blue are catching Bass. Worms in bluefleck, tequilla sunrise, and junebug are great colors right now. If you want some fast action carolina rigged plastics in watermelons off point are catching Kentuckies or spotted Bass. Points and creek channels have been very good for large fish. Boat houses and brush piles also produced good numbers and some quality fish were also mixed in with the catch.

Topwaters are such exciting action and shad patterns in poppers or spook type baits are excellent. The morning bite has been awesome lately. Spinnerbaits have been catching since we have had alot of windy weather also. Action has been hot on Black Bass with up to 35 fish a day being brought in with about 12 soild fish between 3-5 lbs.

Stripers are hitting rattle traps and sassy shad baits early for about the first 2-3 hours of the day. Moving into deeper channel mouths and humps on the Lake to feed Early and Late. Also cut bait like cut shad fished on bottom has been taking fish up to about 10 lbs. mainly Hybrid Stripers in about 12- 22 feet of water.

White Bass orr Sandies have been hittting little george's in silver and spoons jigged over schools in about 17-22 feet also. You can see the schools up on top early and late then going down about 9:30 am.

Catfish has been good with alot of Blues and Channels comming to the boat. Fresh shad caught in my casting net has been the hottest bait. Fished in channels and off points in 14 -17 feet of water.

The Bass on Palestine have finished the spawn and we had a great hatch with millions of fry seen in the coves insuring a great future for the Lake. Females are healing up and beginning to put on the feed bag.

Richland has been producing great numbers of White Bass on Little George's in Silver and spoons and slabs jigged over schools in deeper water with an occasional Hybrid Striper. Schools have been comming up but unpredictable. Deeper schools have been more stable this week. Use youe eletronics and find those big schools and hoover over them and just jig something silver or white in them and it is some exciting action as air temps warm up into June the shad will move up higher in the water sections and the schoools will spend more time on top feeding.

We are booking trips for Bass and White Bass along with Hybrid Stripers and also catfish. I have baited holes for catfish now for some great action.

If you want to book a trip just call 903-478-2413 or 903-724-0961 or e-mail me. Till next time good fishing and may God Bless. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.
