It's been awhile since my last report... it sure is hard getting up at 4 am, fishing until noon or later, cleaning fish, going back out bait fishing and then coming in and cleaning the boat for the next trip. I've been too tired to do anything else but sleep lately. The speckled trout fishing is still good and the redfish - are here, there and scattered all around the Lagoon. If you can find them and can sneak up on them before they get spooked you will catch some good ones. It just doesn't take much to scare them. On one trip this week with a client and his younger sons, we found a nice bite of trout. On the first cast they caught a nice trout and as soon as we hooked him, a school of 10-15 dolphins came to the boat and ate the trout right off of the line. We caught four more small trout and were able to land them, but as soon as we released them the dolphins swooped in and ate them too. The larger dolphins were swimming around the boat and slapping their tails on the water like they were training the smaller ones. I would never have believed it if I had not seen it, but we caught a forty-inch redfish and release him. He was in good shape, and strong. He started to swim off, but a dolphin grabbed him in it's mouth and while he was swimming off, another dolphin was swimming beside him trying to take him from the first one. I don't think they could eat the redfish but threy sure killed it. I have fished here all of my life and I hve never seen the dolphins try to eat everything you released. Either they are getting smarter or lazyier. We finally had to pull anchor and leave that spot. There are some nice tarpon showing up in the Lagoon as well as some good sized bouy fish (tripletail). Tripletail are some of the best eating fish around. You can find them around bouys or other floating objects. You can sight fish them with a shrimp or a small pigfish. On Saturday morning I had two men, David and his brother Tommy and Tommy's grandson Chris. we had our limit of trout caught at 8:30 in the morning. We found a great bite of fish on our second stip. Sometimes you just get lucky and everything comes together just right. |

The Trout are Still Biting My report will be a little short this time. I've been really busy fishing! When the wind goes North they slow down but, when is backs up to southeast or southwest the trout tear up the bait. On one trip this week with a party of two clients, they caught 34 nice sized trout. all of them 15 to 20 inches. That did not include the shorts. We were back to the dock by 10:30 am with our full quota. Not a bad day. Shoot, it was a great day! There are jacks around too. While catching speckled trout we watched a school of jacks devouring a school of finger mullet. What the jacks didn't get the birds picked up. There are also some bull redfish out there. On a trip this week, after catching our limit of trout we found a school of big reds and decided to play with them for awhile. Chris from Arkansas caught one 36 inches long and his friend Bob caught one 33 inches long. Man oh man! Another great day of fishing! |

Oak Hill Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report (April 23) The wind has been blowing hard... That makes fishing hard too. It's hard to fish where you want to, you have to fish where you can and finding the fish on a windy day is just about a miracle. I got in a couple of good days before Easter and caught some nice trout and a couple of jacks. I saw two big schools of redfish but they just would not bite. We tried gulp, live shrimp and gold spoons without sucess. The trout hit the shrimp and the gulp pretty good. But, here were a lot of small ones, about 10 shorts to a keeper. After Easter I got right back on the trout. They were still biting the gulp and we caught some upper slot-size ones. We went right back to the big schools of reds too and caught some real nice keepers on live shrimp. It's really something to slip up on a redfish and watch him when you cast your bait and it hits right in front of him, he turns to look at it. Kind of like "Hey, what was that." Then he cocks his head and just when you think he doesn't care anything about it, he charges for it and the fight is on! You always imagined that was the way it was... but to actually see it happen produces a feeling you can't describe. Whew! If you get a chance, take someone who hasn't fished out and let them get hooked! Until next time, catch one for me! |

First week in April, Mosquito Lagoon Here it is April already and the fishing is good. The Speckeled Trout have been bitting good and there are some nice sized ones, running 12-23 inches. You can also expect to catch 15-25 shorts each trip out. There are still some 15-17 inch Redfish around and you can expect to catch up to 20 of them each trip. There are some large Reds in the mix as well. Berkley Gulp has been working great on both the reds and trout! Gold spoons have also been good. There is still at least one school of big black drum around the Haulover Canal and the Port St. John power plant. The power plant also has a lot of Jacks and some small Tarpon directly offshore. I had two young men and their dad out earlier this week, and there is nothing like watching an eight-year old catch a 23 inch trout. His eyes lit up and his face turned into a great big smile. He was laughing and yelling to beat the band. It's worth the effort to take a kid fishing. Try it if you have the chance. Let's talk a little about fishing ettiquite; I don't want to step on anyone's toes and far be it from me to start preaching... but I was raised to respect the rights of every fisherman on the water. A little courtesy never hurt anyone and it sure makes for better fishing all around. If you see someone anchored and fishing in one spot give them some room. Don't crowd right in on top of them. Keep enough distance between you so each of you can cast toward each other and not get you lines tangled. Both of you will catch more fish and have a better day. Good fishing to you all! I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see how much the pole and troll zone is going to help fishing! I believe it's going to take a little time, but not too much, until you start seeing more gator trout on the flats in the zone. I can remember when you would see more gators than redfish on the flats. Sure everbody doesn't agree with the idea of only poling or trolling the flats, but think of it this way; you wouldn't hang around your favorite resturant in the country if there were a giant lawn mower running over your head every time you went to dinner there. Sure, to start with it's going to take more time to look for fish. But, I believe in a few years it will be better for all. Bigger trout will be caught and in less time. It will save on gas, equipment and time spent fishing. It will take a litte time to educate the people about the zone. That is where we can all help get the word out, about both of the zones in the Mosquito Lagoon. The jack carvelle are showing up in the Lagoon. They are great fighters. You can tell when you hook a jack because all they want to do is circle the boat. As far as eating; I am told they make the tastiest fish cakes you could ever want to eat. I presonally like my fried redfish and trout. Fried might not be all that healthy... but fried fish is where I make an exception! There are still a lot of reds around. On trips eairlier this week my clients caught 21 reds and 15 reds and six trout respectively. The trout are about to turn on as soon as the wild bait shows up. Reds, tarpon, jacks and black drum are still strong around the power plants. Jacks are also strong around both causeways in New Smyrna. Try to go fishing more, and take someone with you. When you are out on the boat with a hook in the water, relax and just forget about your problems. Good fishing to everyone! This has been a crazy week of fishing. The mornings have been cool enough that you need to wear a heavy jacket when you go out early. About mid-morning it warms up to feel almost like summer. The little redfish seem to have gotten thicker and when you get into a school of them they bite like they were starving but, their bellies are full of shrimp. That is because this moon has the shrimp running. There wasa good bite of nice trout in the Haulover Canal and if you are close to the Nasa Causeway Bridge the big black drum have moved in around the bridge. You can use a crab to catch the big Black Drum. Get a whole blue crab without pinchers, break the back off and break it in two pieces. Not only will you catch big black drum, you can catch some big redfish with it too. If you can make it to the surf on the beach you can catch some large whitting and pompano. Good luck fishing and take a child with you... teach him the right way to protect and use the environment. I believe that spring has now arrived! If you fish much with live bait you know what I mean. When you throw a live shrimp out, if you're not right in the front of school the little fish are going to tap on your shrimp, first starting on the legs and then just nibbling it to pieces. If you can, you need to fish with artificial bait. Berkly gulp is a real good bait to use. The trout love it, the reds are crazy about it and the little fish can't nibble it to pieces. Fishing still has been fair to good; depending on the weather and the time of day. There are some small pompano starting to show up around the Titusville area. You can catch them on sand flies or you can use jigs. The bigger trout are starting to show up better. And just as soon as the croakers are big enough to use for bait. The big trout bite will be on. There are a lot of big and small redfish around the power plants in Port St. John. When I say big ones I mean 30 to 40 pound fish. If you are fishing around the power plants you will stay busy catching lady fish. The reds and lady fish are not alone. There are some good tapon moving around the area as well. So go and make some great memories. Go Fishing! Captain Neal captainneal@fishingfrenzy.org www.fishingfrenzy.org 386-690-0473 |

The weather has been beautiful this week; Feb. 27- March 2. The fishing has been great too. The redfish have been bitting good. But there are still a lot of little trout. Sometimes It seems like they never grown up, but we know that is not true. I believe the little trout are just quicker to chase the bait. The big trout are out there in schools just like the little trout, but they don't always bite as fast. If you get out early in the morning you will make some good catches of trout and redfish. This time of year you have got to try different kinds of bait; live and artificial. Don't be afraid to try something new. I actually caught a trout on a piece of my white T-shirt by tearing a small strip off and tieing it to the hook. So try anything you think might work and then try everything else. If you can't get out early, try a late afternoon trip and fish up past dark. Sometimes, they bite better late in the afternoon than they do in the morning. There are some huge black drum in the Haulover Canal. It was a good school too. So just grab your tackle and pole and get out on the water. The fish are out there. And take a friend or a family member, even if you don't catch a fish every hour you just can't beat the time you spend on the water. You are making great memories. So, go fishing! captainneal@fishingfrenzy.org |

Subject: Forward Regarding Toledo Bend
Note: Forwarded Message Follows: Below is the latest information on the drawdown of the lake received from Larry Kelly with the Toledo Bend Bi-State Alliance. If you have any boats in a boat house or marina, you might want to get them out now if you still can.
On Tuesday, September 18, 2001, Joe Goodson, Texas Co-Chairman, Toledo Bend Bi-State Alliance and I accompanied Mr. Wayne King, FERC, Office of Dam Safety, Atlanta Regional Office, Mr. Barton Rumsey, Mr. Mike Rankin & Mr. Donald Ray Haymen, SRA of Louisiana and Mr. Jim Washburn, SRA of Texas, on an inspection of the soil cement on the up-steam face of the dam. After the inspection a meeting was held with Mr. Donnie Hensen, Operations Manager, SRA of Texas, and those of us who had walked the dam.
The news is not good, in fact, it is far worse than was expected at the beginning of the drawdown. We saw damage at approximately 163' msl that requires repair. That means, as it now stands, the lake will be taken down to or below 163' msl. It is even possible the lake could be drawn down to the bottom of the Power Pool, 162.2' msl. Below 163.77' msl will set a new record low water level for the reservoir.
The FERC is scheduled to have representatives inspect the dam again during the first week of October. While it is unlikely, the drawdown plan could change at that time. The FERC's schedule to be here in October could change depending on any problems that might occur as a result of the attack on our country.
The lake should be down to 165' msl by next week. The generator that remains on line will, for the most part, continue to be operated 24 hours per day to drawdown and hold the lake at the level that must be reached to make all repairs.
The FERC and the SRAs assure us that all repairs will be made this year even if it is necessary to use the spillway gates to help bring and keep the lake level down long enough to make the repairs. The only thing that could possibly prevent completion of the repairs this year would be a heavy or prolonged rain that would produce inflows greater than the SRA can release without causing flooding below the dam.
I encourage everyone who needs to do work on waterfront property, including piers, bulkheads, boathouses and boat launches, to try to get it done while the lake is down.
For those of you who have waterfront property and keep your boat in the water, or if you keep your boat in the water at a marina, and the location may be without water at 163' msl down to 162' msl, I recommend that you monitor the water level and take your boat out when the water approaches your minimum access level.
I am sorry the drawdown has worked out the way it has. The good that I see coming out of this is that there should not be any need to lower the reservoir for maintenance of the face of the dam for a long time to come.
Joe and I will stay in contact with the FERC and the SRA to monitor and report to you the progress of the repairs.
Larry Greg Crafts 159 Toledo Forest Shelbyville, TX 75973 Phone: 936.368.7151

Choke Canyon Report 9/24/01 Lake level 24.3 ft. low and holding. Water stained to very stained. Water temp. 86 degrees before front, 81 degrees 24 hours after. Winds north 15 mph north.
Barometer rising steady after frontal passage with bluebird skies. Black bass good to 4.10 lbs...Shallow crankbaits outside the shallow grassline in 5 ft. of water retrieved slowly just over the top of the deeper grass working well. Early morning spinnerbait waking just under the surface also. Double rigged Jones Bait Co. triple tail shads (pearl white and watermelon) good when crank and spinnerbait bite falls off. Later in the day , tx. rigged Jones Bait Co. 11" worms (junebug and fire/ice) working on deep main lake points that are next to the Frio river channel. 15 ft. still seems to be the magic depth, however, after this frontal passage a whole lot of fish have moved shallower in the same areas. White bass are very scattered with small packs of four or five fish running together. Action is short and furious, so be prepared before they come up to the surface pushing shad. Double rigged Curb's bucktail jigs (white and white/chart) in the 1/4 oz. size picking off the larger fish. Lots of very small whites being caught, so the spawn was successful this year. Black bass fair to 2.5 lbs.... Limits of keepers fairly easy to come by, but the larger bass have been elusive this week. Main lake points with stargrass/hydrilla combo best for early morning bite in the Huitsatche Island area by the Old Hwy. 72 roadbed. After sun gets high, then go to main lake humps and points in the south shore , spillway, and entrance to four fingers. Main point at Callihams also holding some keepers. Buzzbaits (white) early, then switch to deep crankbaits with front runners and double carolina rigs with Jones Bait Co. Triple Tail Shads (blue ghost and watermelonseed) and 6" Lizards (watermelon and watermelon/red). 11" JBC worms tx. rigged working also. The river is really stained right now due to runoff as well as the back end of callihams (looks like chocolate milk). Well folks, it is FINALLY starting to pop some thunderstorms around here. Not even enough to settle the dust, but it is a start. Anyway, here goes.
Lake level 26 ft. low. Main lake temp 88 degrees. Water stained. Black bass good to 6.9 lbs........ Lot of little one's with some good solid fish. Limit yesterday of 17 lbs. for five. Jones Bait Company 11 inch worms in junebug got hammered yesterday on the heels of a thunderstorm. All fish were caught within an hour of the storm (14 of them). Dragging the worms up the slope of dropoffs texas rig near the dam and main lake humps in the south shore area main places active. Even briefly had a topwater bite right before rain hit. Crankbait bite has been slow. Texas rigs and double carolina rigs have been the ticket. Early morning through about noon has been the best times. Evening bite sporadic, especially with the wind blowing 20-30 southeast. White bass have been slow. Schools have been scattered. Watch for birds working the surface around the spillway and south shore areas. Lake level 26.6 ft. low and falling. Main lake temp. 85 - 88 degrees. Water clarity 2 ft.. Black bass good to 6.12 lbs..... Some days good, some days slow. Thursday was slow with two keepers. Friday was good as we had a limit right at 16 lbs. Main lake hump hopping is a key right now. You will hit a couple of fish and then they will quit. Very fast action, so be prepared. When they quit, go find another with shad on it. Double carolina rigs with various baits are working with the majority being caught on the color grasshopper. Didn't seem to matter if it was a worm, lizard etc.. Clear silver glitter grubs (4 in.) also catching their share. Deep crankbaits with front runners catching the smaller fish. White bass activity almost non-existant last two days. For more info or to book a guide trip, you can contact me at CJ's Guide Service (361)786-2377 or e-mail at cjsguideservice@yahoo.com .

Lake level 25 ft. low and falling. Main lake temp. 84 degrees. Water stained. Black Bass EXCELLENT to 4.5 lbs.... Limit this morning of 17 lbs. for five by 10 a.m. . Main lake points with brushpiles in the 10 ft. range and ledges with stargrass with deep water right next to it in 5 ft. were hot this morning. Deep crankbaits with front runners were the ticket for the points and Jones Bait Company triple tail shads (watermelon and pro-blue) on a double carolina rig were hot for the grassbeds. Strikes were hard as they were up feeding heavily this morning. Moon overhead really helped. Lake level 23.0 ft. low and falling. Main lake temp. 80 degrees. Black bass excellent to 8.9 lbs... Limit today 19 lbs. (four hours)for five fish. Bass nailing deep crankbaits (threadfin) with front runners (chartruese) in the 8-10 ft. depth level on main lake points in the four fingers and south shore area. Also by the dam. Slow, bottom bouncing retrieve is all that's required. Full moon really has em' feeding. Find the shad balls on the points and here is where you'll find the fish. White bass also in the same areas with main lake humps added to the picture. Same crankbait rig getting hammered with fish averaging 1 1/2 lbs. . No surface schooling right now, but should start very soon. Lake level 22.6 ft. low and slowly falling. Main lake temp. 79 degrees. 86 in the creeks. Main lake stained. River almost muddy. Black bass fair to 4.7 lbs..... Main lake points, ledges, and humps holding most fish.
Definite summer pattern now. Early morning topwater (white buzzbaits) good over grassbeds. Later in the day, hit the points and the humps in 10-15 ft. of water. Same pattern as last year working. Find the white bass schools and the big blacks will be underneath them. Deep crankbaits (threadfin) with front runners (chartruese) worked slowly with bottom bouncing retrieve will get your line stretched. Short carolina rigs with Jones Bait Company triple tail shads (watermelon or christmas), Mad Man crawdads (watermelon/red), and 4 " flippin tubes (watermelon/red) doing most damage. 1 1/2 oz.
Ledgebuster spinnerbaits (chartruese/white) doing real well off the end of river channel points. White bass starting to show up in good size schools on the humps, with avg. fish 1 1/2 lbs. Deep crankbait rig getting mauled here. Curb's white bucktail jigs (1/4 oz.) also working. Four Fingers and South Shore best areas. Lake level 24 ft. low. Main lake temp 78. Water heavily stained. Black bass good to 8.2 lbs...... Early morning topwater bite on over stargrass beds. Switch to deep diving crankbaits with front runners and short carolina rigs with Jones Bait Company Triple Tail Shads (watermelon) later after sun gets high. If clouds persist and mild wind, topwater may last most of the day. Hydrilla beds not holding fish until mid-morning, then becoming active. Shallow next to deep is the key. Main lake points with stargrass holding fish consistently in 6-12 ft. range. Big fish broken off at boat today by client estimated close to lake record on carolina rig, with limit at 19 lbs. for best five fish. Four Fingers, South Shore and Calliham areas all holding fish.White bass are real scattered in main lake. Should begin surface schooling next month.

Lake level 22.8 ft. low. Main lake temp. 71, back of creeks 78. Black bass excellent to 7.0 lbs...Deep diving crankbaits with front runners (tennessee shad) working on ledges and points in the 4 fingers, south shore and calliham areas. 5-10 ft. the magic depth. Fish are feeding heavily in preperation for the spawn, which is almost here on the main lake. Chartruese spinnerbaits slow-rolled through the same areas also producing. Grassbeds are holding fish at the same depth level in 4 fingers and callihams. Shallow running crankbaits working over the top of these grassbeds with erratic retrieve. White spinnerbaits and wacky worms (watermelon) also working. Topwater bite is slowly coming on with a few takers up shallow, but always near grass. Lake level 22.8 ft. low and slowly falling. Main lake temp. 65, back of creeks 73. Black bass good to 6.0 lbs...Four Fingers and South Shore areas holding active fish. Cuts in these areas that have hydrilla in them, (that is the key), are holding quality fish. Males are up against the bank and the females are holding a little deeper in the patches of hydrilla. Mann's minus one shallow crankbait (solid chartruese) and 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits (chartruese w/chartruese willows) slow-rolled doing the most damage. Soft plastic bite non-existant today. The spawn is just around the corner in the main lake.
White bass are scattered, but active in the dam/spillway area. Catfish are very good on juglines in the main lake river channel on cut bait in 50 ft. of water. Big blue cats , with the largest caught this week of 59.60 lbs, and good size yellow cats are being caught in great numbers. Crappie have also become active in the main lake on deep brushpiles in 15 ft. of water, Small chartruese jigs working. Deep diving crankbaits (threadfin) with front runners (chartruese) working well on main lake points and off the face of the dam in 8-15 ft. of water. Lake level 21.8 ft. low. Main lake temp. 58 - 62 degrees. 64 in back of creeks. Black bass good to 9.6 lbs. on shallow and deep crankbaits in 1-8 ft. of water.Main areas have been calliham's and mason's point and the west end of four fingers. Males have moved shallow and are hitting cranks with abandon.
Larger bass have been staging on secondary points awaiting right temperatures. Chartruese and yellow have been the hot colors as of late. Carolina rigs are picking up a few fish, but very slow. Jones Bait Company shads (watermelon/chart. tail) and lizards (junebug) are the working items on these rigs. With the many fronts coming through, looks like the next five weeks will tell the tale on the main lake spawn.
Hopefully the water temps will climb so we can have a good spawn before the water levels drop AGAIN ! White bass are fair as the fish are beginning to filter back into the main lake. Some crappie have been caught at Mason's Point ramp using minnows in the shallow brush.

Lake level 21.8 ft. low and falling. Black bass EXCELLENT to 11.5 lbs.... Good strings of 25 lbs. plus are coming from shallow water from Greyhound Point down to Calliham area and is only going to get better ! Spinnerbaits with copper willows (firetiger / chartruese) and shallow crankbaits (chartruese / shad) are really working well when slow-rolled along bottom. Jones Bait Company Lizards (junebug) and Triple Tail flukes (watermelon/black gold) weightless in same areas mopping up when fish get off spinnerbait bite. ANY cast right now could be a 10lb. + so be on your toes! South Shore and 4 Fingers also showing activity but sporadic at best. White bass are slow as main concentration still up-river past Tilden. Lake level 19.74 ft. low. Main lake temp. 52 . 53-55 up-river. Water stained in main lake. Almost muddy at 99 bridge up-river. Starts to clear above the San Miguel Ramp. Black Bass SLOW....... Very few fish caught. Nothing really consistant. White bass are slow..... A few are being caught at the 99 bridge and north of there on live minnows deep. Fish have gone deep and suspended. Live minnows seem to be the only thing working right now due to water temps..... Until water warms up some, slow and deep will be the case. Lake level 19.8 ft. low. Main lake temp. 60 degrees. 60 in the back of the creeks. 63 up-river. Black bass fair to 4.6 lbs... Most activity is up-river. Small crankbaits (chartruese/white) worked along channel on outside of what is left of the treeline since the last rise. Tx. rigged brushhogs (pearl white) flipped on the inside of the hardwoods also worked. Deadstick at base worked well. Rattles inside of brushhog was the key. No rattles, no hits. White bass are starting to show up in the river to 2 lbs...
All activity found was at the mouth of San Miguel creek (blacks and whites) above the 99 bridge. Talking to bank fisherman at the 99 bridge, they stated they were also catching a few on minnows in the bridge area. All whites so far have been males. The activity should get better after christmas on into January. Cold snap that is coming may damper things for a while. Lake level 20.04 ft. low and steady. Main lake temp. 62 degrees. Back of creeks also 62 degrees. Cloudy. SE wind 15 mph. Barometer 30.02 steady. Water heavily stained. Black bass slow to 2 lbs...Main lake humps in 15 ft. of water showing most activity today.
Little George tailspinners and 1/2 oz. jigging spoons most effective today. Slow hop of 12 inches vertically or holding it still off the bottom 1-2 ft. drew strikes. All fish today (4) were small with 2 lbs. the largest. Motor around various humps and points until you find balls of shad will be your best bet. Remember with this colder water to slow down and you will get bit more often. The white bass have been slow with a few being caught around the dock lights at South Shore at night. Main run up the river is still a good 2-4 weeks away. For more info or to book a guide trip, you can contact me at CJ's Guide Service (361)786-2377 or e-mail at cjsguideservice@yahoo.com .

Carl,
I would like to thank you very much for the service you provide. I have fished choke since the day it opened and have found only a few things you can count on. First and foremost, the fishing is going to be spotty from time to time. You may catch 6 nice bass in a small cove and fish the rest of the day without a bite.
Keep up the good work! Jim Flinn |

Subject: Choke Report
Lake level 18.96 ft. low and slowly rising. Main lake temp. 64 degrees. Water stained. Black bass slow today to 2.7 lbs....... Fish just were not in the mood today, even with the rising water conditions we currently have. A lot of fish are showing up on the old LCD, mainly on main lake humps and points. Why they have not stayed shallow from the action we had two weeks ago is anyone's guess. Best bait for today was a tx. rigged brush hog (watermelo/red) flipped at the base of the hardwoods in 8 ft. of water. Had to let it sit there for a minute or two while gently twitching it to get the rattle and glass beads to make a little noise. Strikes soft, while at times your line would just move off. Double carolina rigs were also successful with triple tail shads (blue ghost), but only non-keepers were interested.
I would also like to touch on a VERY sore subject that I have been informed of by a fellow guide here at Choke. First of all, my reports. The reports that I put on this site and all the other sites that I write for are VERBATUM how I am catching fish. I don't lie or give false reports just to drum up business or to get you to come down here and spend your hard earned money ! I like to catch fish like everyone else, and I enjoy helping someone do so whenever possible. But it seems some people read my report from last week, or in this case two weeks ago, and get mad when they come down here a week or so later and the fish are doing something completely different and expect to have the same success. It just doesn't happen that way. Every day is different ! All my reports do is give you an IDEA of what depth levels they were holding and what baits were successful on that particular day. The rest is up to you to find and catch them.
Next subject is the bitter battle over whether to stock this lake or not. I am NOT against the stocking of fish in Choke Canyon. I AM against the governmental entities that constantly lower the water levels of this lake. They take away the cover these little one's (stocked or not)need to hide in and wonder why they don't survive. You want to stock this lake with northern's, florida's, or the new triploid bass go right ahead. Just don't complain when you open the bellies of white bass, gaspergou etc. and find fingerlings in their stomachs ! I have recovered countless little black bass 3-5 inches long from the white bass I have filleted. Anyway, that is the large and small of things. Trust me, I WILL NOT get in the middle of this war. I am sure there are a thousand opinions out there on this subject. This is my opinion, I have a right to it, and that is that ! Lake level 24.9 ft. low and falling. Main lake temp. 72 degrees. Water stained. Black bass good to 4.6 lbs....... Texas rigged brush hogs (watermelon/red and pearl) flipped stright down the trunks of the hardwoods in the 4 fingers area getting bit in 8-10 ft. of water. Also picking up quality fish in the Frio River channel where it swings in next to Huitsatche Island. Double Carolina rigs with Jones Bait Company triple tail shads (watermelon/chart and baitfish) doing well as well as deep crankbaits w/ front runners. Most fish being caught right on the drop into the channel (9ft. into 43) . All baits were saturated with Bite This Mfg. garlic scent. Catch ratio with this brew is almost 4 to 1 compared to using none.
Just remember, if it is bluebird day with high pressure, get on the wood and put your bait right at the base of these trees and just let it sit there. Little tick is all you will feel until you set the hook. White bass very slow. Most are moving up-lake towards the river (what's left of it).
