Subject: Spring Conditions on the White and Ottauquechee R
The recent warm weather has triggered a lot of runoff in the last few days. All the areas river's and streams are running high and muddy. The good news is, I look for nearly all of the snow pack the be melted by the end of the month. It won't take long for things to get into shape once the snow is gone. Once the runoff has subsided a good place to start your search for trout will be the tributaries, especially those that have a good number of brook trout. Start at the sources of these stream and gradually move downstream until you find the fish. Be aware that the closer you get to the larger streams the more likely you will come across some spawning rainbows. Please practice catch and release if you encounter any of these fish. Bring them to hand quickly and make sure the trout is properly revived before you release them. Let's give them every chance to be successful at the spawning game.
Fall is almost here and the current conditions could not be better. We have perfect river flows and water temperatures. The trout have been averaging a little better than 12 inches in both the White and Ottauquechee Rivers and we have taken several large spawning browns from the headwaters and tributaries. The dry fly action has been hot but the trout are taking nymphs eagerly as well. Stick to the large attractor patterns and you should do well.
