Hi,
I will be travelling to Patagonia in the middle March, more specifically El Calafate and the Lake Roca region. I would like to fish while there, yet my flyfishing skills are not the best. I will probably bring a light spinning rod and a 5 weight fly rod. Any ideas where to fish, as well as lures for spinning and specific flies. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, are there areas accessible without a guide, or is a guide necessary.
Thnk you for any and all help you could give.
Ron

Subject: Fly Fishing Argentina

Alerces Park, Argentina

I fished with a client one morning at the Big Lake and at Rainbow Flats. The mourning was cold and we began to fish with a variety of flies from dries to wets. We were seeing fish in the clear water and on the surface, but they just seemed to be sluggish. We kept changing flies to see if we could get them excited.

Well, that all changed as it started to warm up and more sunlight hit the water Then we saw a dragonfly moving about and they are not out unless there is something to eat out there. His keen eye spotted that right away. This was my client's third trip to Patagonia and putting on the Chernobyl Ant was his favorite fly. He made the cast to an on-coming big rainbow that was surface feeding and heading our way. We watched the rainbow pick his way along sucking up small insects. The rainbow hit the Chernobyl ant and the rest is history. The Chernobyl was the fly for the day.
