Swanswater Fishery Saturday saw 40 flyfishers assembled for the Grand Final of the Glen Garioch Challenge Trophy, Organised by www.flyfishingscotland.com and fished previously at venues up and down Scotland over a period of 3 months with 1 team qualifying from each venue. The 10 top 4 man teams arrived to compete for the silverware and impressive array of prizes. Not an ideal fishing day with varying conditions throughout the day and the water being slightly coloured due to the rain on previous days. Mr. T Dallas from Glasgow caught 1 fish for 3lb, Mr. Walker from Lugar caught 1 fish for 3lb 2oz and Mr. G Thomson from Kilmarnock caught 2 fish for 4lb 4oz. M C Jackson from Mauchline 1 fish for 3lb 4oz, Mr. A Wallace from Glasgow Caught 2 fish for 5lb and Mr. I Harrison from New Cumnock caught 2 fish for 4lb 6oz. On the Bait Pond Mr. W Mack from Blantyre caught 2 fish for 4lb 8oz, Mr. McDicken from New Cumnock caught 2 fish for 4lb 6oz and Mr. McDicken Jnr from New Cumnock caught 2 fish for 4lb 2oz. Mr. S Ferns from Kilmarnock caught 2 fish for 5lb 2oz. BURNHOUSE LOCHAN (Bonnybridge) Buzzers took some very good bags last week again, as did small traditionals fished on a floating line with a long leader very slowly. Black and green Fritz, Orange Fritz and the infamous Yellow Dancer also took some good fish. Biggest fish of the week was taken by Andrew Tuten from Falkirk with a nice rainbow that weighed in at 6lb 8oz. Also doing well were Raymond Stevenson from Falkirk - two fish for 9lb, Sandy Kirkwood from Falkirk - two fish for 6lb 5oz and Barry Cochran from Bonnybridge - one fish for 4lb. William Sinclair from Denny - two fish for 7lb 8oz, Steven Hunter from Banknock - two fish for 6lb and Stewart Sheriff from Falkirk - three fish for 9lb. Archie Miller from Banknock - two fish for 5lb 8oz and Donald Stewart from Denny - two fish for 5lb 12oz. FAIRLIE MOOR. Has been fishing really well over the past week with many good catches being taken all around the loch. Floating lines teamed with Lime Buzzers with Hare's ear or Bloodworms have done particularly well. An intermediate line stripped fast using Green Fritz teamed with Black or Olive damsels has also produced some excellent catches. Sinking lines fished with white boobies have landed nice fish along the dam wall area. The Bait pond has been fishing really well with worm or power bait doing the business here. GOLDEN LOCH (Newburgh on Tay) Still reasonably mild weather at the Goldenloch and the fish are responding by feeding and moving on the surface. The anglers are delighted with the sight of the fish as they look for anything that resembles food. We seem to have three large shoals of fish, the brown trout that spend most of their time in and around the boat jetty and two groups of rainbows which move in all parts of the loch. Master Gavin Wood, Star of Markinch fishing with his father caught and landed a 2.4lb rainbow in their bag and Master Tom Jenks (Dunning) fishing with his uncle had 2 for 4.5lbs using a Mini Cats Whisker. This was Tom’s first ever day trout fishing and left with a huge smile on his face as his uncle had only managed I but lost 3. J Tolhie, Dundee had 3 for 6lbs using buzzers and Jim Paton (Auchtermuchty) on his first outing of the season managed 3 using Yellow Dancers. HOWWOOD (Renfrewshire) It was a good week for fishing during which some excellent baskets were recorded. Those included Mr. Divers and a party of three who took 14 fish weighing 25lbs, Jim Black from Johnstone had 5 on C+R and Dougie Anderson (Glasgow) returned 4 with the biggest estimated at 4lbs. Steven Taylor from Clydebank caught 5 for 9lbs 8oz, Mr. Wilson (Paisley) took 3 for 6lbs 10oz and Jim Linnie (Alexandria) had 11 on a C+R ticket. Tom McDermott & son from Glasgow caught 6 for 12lbs and Kenny Fraser (Glasgow) took 8 on C+R. KINGENNIE FISHINGS (Arbroath) The Specimen Pool re-opened at the weekend and full results will start up again next week. WOW – what a week it was on the Bankside Pool with Brian Longmuir from Arbroath catching 48 fish on the one day – a new record. The best fish of the week went to Bob McDonald from Newbigging at 6lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach and over the week no fewer than 24 fish over 5lbs were caught. Also doing well were Keith Clark from Dundee with 44 on C+R, Mark Smith (Arbroath) had 4 for 10lbs – returned 22 all on Zonkers and Mr. Hale (Forfar) took 4 for 14lbs – best 5lbs on a Damsel. Last but not least Sam Dorward from Carnoustie had 13 on C+R – best estimated at 6lbs on Buzzers. LOCH FITTY (Dunfermline) Well-known Local angler Mr Jimmy Hatten from Kelty opened Loch Fitty for the 2005 season on Saturday 12th February amidst cold windy wintry weather. The water temperature started off at -1 degrees dropping to -4 degrees in the afternoon, the air temperature never rose above 2 degrees all day and the wind increased greatly as the day progressed. The fishing was good for some anglers but not so good for others; the hardy souls that stuck it out were rewarded with some nice bags. Alloa angler Mr Jimmy Milne caught the first fish landed on the bank receiving a 1/2 bottle of Whisky while the boat angler who landed the first fish off the boats was Mr Ian Skilling from Shotts who also received a 1/2 bottle of Whisky. Best boat for the day was local Dunfermline angler Mr Burt returning to the jetty with his boat limit of 16 fish for 21lb 6oz. Best Flies recorded for the day were Black & Green Cat, Black Fritz, Viva and Damsel. Best Lines were Intermediate in the morning going on to a DI 3 in the afternoon. Best Areas were Car Park Shore, Stoney Bank & Swan Mussel Bay. Sunday saw severe gales with a scattering of snow showers thus restricting anglers to certain areas and very hard fishing, again the hardy souls picked up the occasional fish. The Fishing will improve as soon as the weather settles, as the loch has been heavily stocked for the new season with 2 & 1/2 tons of trout all waiting to be caught. LOCHTER ( Old Meldrum ) In this unsettled world it is nice to spread a bit of happiness and Bridge of Don angler Neil Horne was a very happy chappie when he landed his “best fish ever” a fine rainbow which weighed in at fifteen pounds twelve ounces as part of his total bag of ten at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum. The Bloodworm, which had been recommended to him by fishery warden Charlie Yates, was the fly which did the business proof if proof were needed that it pays to ask “the locals” what is catching rather than just go it alone. It was “ away the lads” for Geordie angler Dave Scott who had a fine twelve pounder in his bag of fifteen caught on a variety of mini lures while J. Deans had a best of eleven pounds in his bag of twenty one using everything from buzzers to lures as the conditions changed. On the colder days lures worked well as the fish dropped down in the water particularly in the Muckle Troot loch .Mike Yeoman had nine in a Diffick and Harry Smart tempted fourteen using what he described as a very scruffy WSW. The nymphers had their moments during the milder spells,it is amazing what a half a degree rise in water temperature can do to the trouts feeding habits;Stuart Park had eighteen and Archie Bell eleven using dark coloured nymphs fished very slowly using a figure of eight retrieve with the trout regularly taking just as the fly got to the edge of the deep water drop-off. With the weather likely to remain unsettled it will be the anglers who adapt to the conditions who will fare best. There certainly are plenty of trout to be caught including beautiful overwintered specimens which are more difficult to catch but are well worth connecting up with. MARKLE FISHERY (East Lothian) Although it has been a quiet week the quality of the baskets has been extremely good for those who fished. Jack Stevenson from Ormiston had an exceptional day catching a brace weighing 18lbs – heaviest 10lbs both on a Black Fritz. T Middleton from Hawick had a great catch of 3 for 16lbs – best 9lbs on a Black Fritz and B Parks (Edinburgh) caught 3 for 14lbs – best 6lbs on a Black & Green Tadpole. Chick Telfer from Gorebridge took 3 for 10lbs 8oz on a Cat’s Whisker and Hugh Snedden (Gorebridge) had 3 for 10lbs on a Hot Head Damsel. MOFFAT (Dumfriesshire) Beautiful blue skies and little wind but the icy cold has made the fish very lethargic and they are not feeding as well as normalthis we are seeing in the growing on ponds, but for those who are will to try all methods and be more persistent there are fish to be had. B Lawrie took 3 fish for 12lbs 6oz including a cracker of just over 6lbs. R Barrie captured 3 beauties that totalled a little over 12lbs. A busy day on Saturday saw many good bags being taken. Damsels, Yellow Dancers and Bloodworms seem to have been doing the most catching over the past week. MIDDLETON (Largs) Some excellent sport and fishing over the past week with some of the better catches coming from S Hood taking 14 fish on his C & R ticket. B Hood took 3 fish for 10lbs 8oz. R McGregor had 3 for 9lbs 6oz and went on to release a further 4 fish. D Wright took 3 for 8lbs 10oz. Tam White took 4 crackers for a combined weight of 12lbs 8oz. A Anderson took 2 for 6lbs. P Campbell captured 2 fish for 9lbs 12oz. Mr W Osborne was fortunate enough to capture the tagged fish weighing approximately 10lbs unfortunately the tagged prize had not yet started so he received a Day ticket. Bibio, Hot head Damsels have been working well as has Buzzers fished under the sight indicator, Black Fritz have also taken a good share of the fish. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fishing is still excellent with the fish lying at varying depths according to the weather conditions. The top taking patterns last week were the Yellow Dancer, Bloodworm, Buzzers and small Nymphs. Those featuring amongst the best catches were Stewart Jackson from Larbert with 3 for 9lbs 12oz – best 4lbs 12oz on a Christmas Tree and Peem McMeechan (Fallin) took 5 for 14lbs – best 4lbs 8oz on a small Black & Green Nymph. Jim McGhee from Bonnybridge caught 3 for 10lbs on a Damsel, Jim Donnelly (Tullibody) had 4 for 12lbs 8oz – best 4lbs 4oz Buzzers and Hector Wilson (Bannockburn) managed 3 for 8lbs 12oz on an Orange Fritz. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The bitterly cold wind on Sunday did not affect the fishing as much as the heavy rain and coloured water had done earlier in the week. Despite the weather there were still some days when the fishing was excellent and large numbers of superb quality fish were being taken by those brave enough to face the elements. Cat’s Whisker, Damsel, Dancer, and various Fritz patterns were all catching fish, with Black and Green and Orange amongst the favourite colours. On the days when the conditions on Swanswater were not so good the small ponds became very popular and were fishing very well and producing some lovely fish. The biggest fish this week was a 6lb 8oz Blue landed by Eddie Fulton, Livingston in his 2 Blues for 9lb 4oz, Neville Dawson, Alva, had the bag of the week with 5 for 20lb 4oz, including two 4lb 12oz Rainbows and a 4lb Blue and Grant McCauley, Duntocher, in two visits, 9 for 28lb including 3 Blues. Steven Macdonald, Cumbernauld, in two visits, 9 for 28lb 10oz including 2 Blues, Charles Tevan, Stirling 7 for 22lb 8oz including 3 Blues, biggest at 4lb 10oz and Bob Lindsay, Carronshore, in two visits, 6 for 17lb 8oz including a Blue. Robert Blaney, Tullibody, 5 for 15lb 8oz, Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 15lb 8oz, Willie Lauder, Gareth Thorne and Kevin Hughes, from Pittenweem, shared 12 for 34lb and James Hogg, Richard Robertson and Willie Stewart, Edinburgh, shared 7 for 21lb 12oz including a 4lb 14oz Blue. Ray McIntosh, Banknock, 4 for 13lb 8oz including 3 Blues, Eddie Blair, Bannockburn, 4 for 13lb 4oz including a 4lb 12oz Rainbow and Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 13lb. Kenny and Jim Downie, Galston, shared 4 for 12lb 10oz, including a Blue and a 4lb Rainbow, Andy Patrick, Manchester, had 2 Blues in his 3 for 9lb8oz and Allan Mitchell, Stirling, 3 for 9lb 8oz including a Blue. Ronnie Loos, Stirling, 2 for 9lb, the bigger one a 5lb 12oz Rainbow, Peter McGowan, Alexandria, 2 for 7lb 4oz, Harry Seton, Duntocher, 2 for 7lb and Kevin Gold, Stirling, 2 for 7lb.

Larger Brownies are being caught in this colder weather (released back due to closed season) Black Spiders, Olive Damsels, Blood Worms and Red and Green Buzzers have been taking the fish floating lines fished static or intermediate with a very slow retrieve are the best tactics. The Bait pond is also fishing well with Red Maggots and Power Bait working the best GOLDEN LOCH (Newburgh on Tay) At the Goldenloch these past few days it has been like summer, an outside temperature of 15 C has seen the fish moving on the surface looking for food. Anglers have been rewarded with good catches and a pleasant feel to their fishing, lets hope that this good weather stays and that the angling season is less windy. Getting it right was Pete Fleming, G Brown, D Logie and S Puel all from Methil who used Damsels and Diawl Bachs to take 30lbs of fish. Also getting a good bag of fish were Messrs Burnett and Cox with 18lbs of fish between on the Diawl Bach, and S Ewart from Kinross landed himself a gorgeous 6lb rainbow. With the 2005 stocking well underway anglers will be looking forward to a good season but please remember that this year more than ever before that equipment hygiene and health and safety regulations will play an important part in your days leisure. SPRING WATER (Ayrshire) Generally quiet due to the inclement weather conditions but good bags have been coming off the water a local club fished 5 rods and took 30 fish between them, Regulars Frank Cole took fish up to the 5lb mark on his last visit. Mr Bryce popped along from Maybole and was pleasantly surprised taking 2 fish for 11lbs. Large Black Buzzers, Bunny Leech and damsels have been the best flies of late. The McMillan Pairs competition will be on Sunday 20th February and there are still a few places available. Contact : 01292-560343 SWANSWATER (Stirling) The fishing continued to be pretty good despite the changeable weather with fish being caught even during the snowstorms. The drop in temperature at the weekend had the effect of moving the fish from their usual haunts and created new hotspots. Most fish were taking lures, especially Yellow Dancer, Montana, Cat’s Whisker and Damsel, with Buzzers and Bloodworm picking up a few as usual. Scott Padden, Falkirk, took the biggest fish of the week with a 10lb 10oz Rainbow, on a Black Cat, in his 2 for 14lb 10oz. Ten anglers from each day will go through to the final and the winner will receive the Fred Berkley Trophy and £300, second will receive £200 and third £100. GOLDEN LOCH (Newburgh on Tay) The first two weeks of 2005 at the Goldenloch have been extremely windy however anglers have not been put of by the conditions and the fishing has been excellent. Steve Smart from Strathmiglo fishing from the bank had 5 all returned reporting that the fish were in tip top condition, Steve McCarthy Lochore had an early morning start and using a Montana caught 4 returning all, before the wind made it impossible to continue. Like most anglers Steve did not mind the torrential rain but high blustery wind just spoiled his day. Jim Wilson from Dalgety Bay had 4 on C+R with one being a gorgeous 3lb blue trout and another a 1lb brown. The new lodge is now certainly a big asset, as anglers can warm up in comfort with a heater and microwave to heat pies etc. Those making good use of the facilities were pensioners Jim and Dave, from Perth, both arriving on a nice, calm day only to see a complete turnaround in the weather. Within an hour they were having to run to the lodge for shelter, but determined not to have their day spoiled the two hardy old timers were in and out, off and on the loch all day and eventually caught 6 fish for 16lbs. HOWWOOD (Renfrewshire) Due to the horrendous weather the fishery has been very quiet but those who braved the gales and rain did very well indeed. Stevie Horsburgh from Johnstone had 4 for 8lbs 12oz, Mr. Leslie had a brace weighing 4lbs 12oz and Donny Muir (Johnstone) managed 3 for 9lbs. Also doing well were Heather Goodfellow from Johnstone had 2 for 4lbs 14oz and Campbell Mills (Glasgow) caught 2 for 3lbs 12oz. The best flies have been the Damsel, Cat’s Whisker and the Black & Green Montana Nymph. LAWFIELD (Renfrewshire) Despite the stormy weather some excellent catches have been made mostly on sight-bob tactics. Stevie Pringle from Paisley had 4 fish on a Rubber Duck fished under an indicator. One fish weighed 10lbs and one weighed 11lbs 8oz. Archie Frame had 4 on C&R, Alan Martin 2 on C&R, S. Drummond 5 on C&R and R. McIntyre 4 on C&R. With calmer conditions forecast the fishing should be very good. Contact Billy on 01505 874182. MARKLE FISHERY (East Lothian) Although extremely quiet due to the terrible weather those who went out fishing returned with some pretty impressive catches. Willie Brash from Mayfield had a great session ending up with a brace of fish that tipped the scales at 26lbs. A Yellow Dancer did the damage and the heaviest fish weighed in at 15lbs. Jack Hay from Haddington took fish number 1,000 last week and with his season ticket running to the end of the month no doubt a few more will be added to this already impressive tally. Jack used a White Rabbitiser to bag a cracking rainbow of 10lbs. Frank Stewart made the long trip up from Wooler in Northumbria on a wild and windy day but was well rewarded with specimens of 10lbs and 8lbs both to the Hare’s Ear. He returned a further 4 fish. Also doing well were Mr. Clayton with 3 for 14lbs on a Bloodworm and A Patterson took 3 for 9lbs 4oz and released a further 8 – all to a Buzzer. MIDDLETON (Largs) Even with the heavy winds and poor weather conditions the fishery is doing well with some excellent catches coming off. Some of those these have come from Tam White with 4 fish for 14lbs 8oz, Kenny Haggert released 12 and J Drey took 2 for 6lbs. J Galbraith had 2 for 6lbs, J Anderson 1fish for 3lbs 8oz and Graham Steele released 8 fish. Best flies have been Damsels and Minkies. Club Bookings are now being taken. Call Morris on 07932 744531 ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fishing was extremely good last week with the Damsel, Yellow Dancer, Black & Green Fritz and small nymphs all taking good baskets of fish. Amongst those doing well were 12 year old John McLean from Crieff who had 3 fish for 8lbs 12oz on a Blue Fritz, Mike Piper (Edinburgh) took 3 for 8lbs on the Yellow Dancer and Paul Campbell (Halbeath) managed 5 for 16lbs on the Yellow Dancer. Bill Smith from Menstrie caught 3 for 8lbs on a Black & Green Fritz, Andrew Airnes (Clackmannan) had 3 for 8lbs 4oz and John Meek (Tullibody) had 3 for 8lbs 4oz on the Yellow Dancer. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Despite the atrocious weather conditions a good number of anglers braved the elements and for most of the week were well rewarded for their efforts. On the days when Swanswater was virtually unfishable because of high water levels and strong winds, the small ponds came into their own and fished well. In spite of all the rain, the water is coloured rather than dirty and is clearing fast. Yellow Dancer, Damsel, Black and Green Fritz, Okay Dokey and other Buzzers were the best patterns. Several anglers took advantage of seasonal holidays to make several visits to the Fishery during the course of the week Peter Bryce, Alloa, in 5 visits took a total of 17 fish for 53lb 6oz, the biggest one being a 5lb 4oz Rainbow, Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 10 for 28lb 4oz in two visits including 2 Blues, 13 year old John Mathieson, Doune, 9 for 26lb 8oz, including a 5lb Rainbow, in two visits and Peter Baranowski, Bridge of Allan, had 8 for 26lb 12oz including a 5lb 8oz rainbow and a Blue in two visits, Sandy Jenkins, Carronshore, also made two visits an took 8 for 24lb 12oz, Ronnie Loos, Stirling, 4 for 13lb 12oz including a 4lb 4oz Blue in two visits, Stuart Cameron and grandson, Thomas from Alexandria, shared 5 for 17lb from the boat and Robin Bowler, Menstrie, 5 for 16lb 8oz including a 4lb 8oz Rainbow. OTHER FISHERIES BURNHOUSE LOCHAN (Bonnybridge) There is still plenty top of the water activity with Black Buzzers and Micro- Buzzers still doing well. The bigger fish are feeding on fry at the moment therefore anything that resembles fry is doing very well indeed. Green Fritz with a black tail and the Black Fritz are all taking good bags. Jim Sullivan from Falkirk had a fish for 12lb 7oz that turned out to be the heaviest of the week. Also doing well were Archie Miller from Banknock - two fish for 7lb, Phillip Tully from Falkirk - two fish for 8lb 8oz and Garry Watson from Denny - two fish for 8lb 4oz and returned a further 8 fish. THE SPECIMEN POOL WILL CLOSE LATER THIS MONTH FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS FOR ‘DE-SLUDGING’. The Bankside Pool continues to fish well especially to Buzzers, surprisingly enough for this time of the year. Latest Fishery Reports BUTTERSTONE LOCH (Dunkeld) This week I'm able to say that the fishing at Butterstone has probably been at it's very best over the last few days writes manager Rick Knight. We've had some great catches, a very successful fund raising competition, spectacular rises in the calm conditions and lots of big fish caught. It doesn't get any easier to come down with a favoured method though; it's still wide and varied with regard to both depth and pattern. Buzzers and nymphs have been good but the lure boys have been getting their share too, with various coloured rabbits doing the damage. The sun is less of a consideration now but overcast and light ripple is best (as usual!) and the last three or four days have been ideal. On Friday the Fishery hosted and sponsored a competition for fund raising for the Perth Royal Infirmary heart scanner appeal, ably organized by The British Heart Foundation's local man, Raymond Adam. A total of just over £600 was raised for the charity and everyone was delighted with their day. A total of 21 boats were out and returned an impressive 156 trout for a weight of 323lb 10oz. Heaviest for the day and heaviest for the week equaled the seasons record at 13lb 12oz and was caught by well-known Crieff angler, Malcolm Anderson. Prizewinners were: Bob Inglis with a limit basket of 6 fish for 15lb 11oz and ladies winner was Ann Boreland with 5 fish for 8lb 9oz The Loch continued in the same vein over the weekend and some of the club returns were: Aberdour Angling Association had 66 fish for 145lb, Newtyle & Meigle, 52 for 114lb, including a 9lb fish for Dave Bell (Buzzer), Perth RASC Club, 54 fish for 109lb 14oz and Leslie & Glenrothes, 39 fish for 82lb 4oz. Robert Rogers from Ardrossan had a beauty of 9lbs on a Black Fritz and Hector Milligan from Cumnock had two visits this week taking on both occasions 2 fish each night for 4.5lbs W Mitchell from Ayr had a good day and left happy with a nice fish of 5lbs caught on a CDC. The bait pond continues to fish well on the floated and sunken baits. Power bait, maggots and sweetcorn have produced the best results this week with Richard McBride and Jim Aitken from Logan both catching their limit with maggots and worm. Andrew Roy, a visitor from Northern Ireland had 3 fish for 5lbs on power bait. The first of our winter competitions will be advertised shortly and may well be at the start of November. HOWWOOD (Renfrewshire) There were some cracking fish off last week with Ross Douglas from Johnstone taking the heaviest at 14lbs on an Olive Epoxy Buzzer. Dennis Zibas from Zante in Greece used a Black Snatcher to bag a beauty of 12lbs 2oz and Bobby Beggs (Johnstone) had 3 for 12lbs 11oz - best 9lbs 4oz on a CDC Sedge. Others doing well included Rab McPherson from Coulport who had 5 for 9lbs 14oz - returned 5 on the Diawl Bach and his boat partner John Wellman used a Black Fritz to take 5 for 9lbs 12oz. Jim Kyle from Newton Mearns had 9 on C+R using a Sedge, Mr. Meighan caught 5 for 9lbs 12oz on the Damsel and John Holden (Irvine) caught 3 for 6lbs on the CDC. William Hall from Dalkeith took 3 for 12lbs - best 7lbs 8oz on a Buzzer and Ian Evans (New Craighall) had one at 10lbs on a White Cat. NORTH THIRD TROUT FISHERY (Stirling) Despite cold winds on a number of days the week ended with an excellent total of 497 trout, including 14 specimens. The biggest fish of the week weighed in at 8lbs 12 oz and it was caught by Mark Brownrigg of Callander. This was closely followed by Mr. McKay of Glasgow, who had a superb specimen of 8lbs 6oz. He ended the day with a magnificent bag of fish totalling 9 for 20lbs 2oz. The third really big specimen of the week was caught by J. Pringle of Alnwick, who was fishing with the House of Hardy Angling Club and his specimen was returned to the water and was very conservatively estimated at 8lbs plus. Mr. Maughan of Cockermouth was up on one of his regular trips from England and had a beautiful rainbow of 7lbs 6oz. Apart from the colder days, anglers were still doing best with intermediate or floating lines. Particularly successful flies included the Damsel nymph, Diawl Bach, Bibio, Kate McLaren and Black Pennell. Overall lures were not so successful. Due to popular demand the Fishery has extended the days when it offers discounted permits to anglers who are over the age of 60 or are unemployed. These tickets are now available from Monday to Thursday, inclusive. If the angler is eligible then the cost is only £12 per rod for boat or bank fishing. This is fantastic value and offers a massive saving on the normal price. Just book in the normal way and remember that proof of status will be needed on the day. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The best methods last week was to use a floating line teamed up with Buzzers, Hoppers, Daddy Longlegs, Diawl Bach and the Damsel Nymph. The Glenochil AC from Tullibody had a good day taking 48 fish for 143lbs with Stewart Forrest having the heaviest basket of 6 fish weighing 17lbs 8oz. Arthur Shevill from Airdrie took 5 for 16lbs - best 5lbs 8oz on a Dry Daddy and Graham King (Perth) used a Dry Hopper to catch 6 for 20lbs 8oz - best 5lbs 8oz. SWANSWATER The breezier conditions during the week suited the fish better and led to some excellent fishing. During the calm spells, static Buzzers were working best, with Damsels, Hare's Ear, Cat's Whisker and Dancers the favourites at other times. A total of 428 fish averaging 2lb 9oz were taken this week, with another 46 caught and released. Once again there was a good selection of varieties landed, with the Blues in particular creating a lot of great sport. Biggest fish this week was a cracking 11lb 7oz Rainbow landed by David MacIntyre from Glasgow on a home-tied lure, in his 2 for 13lb 8oz, Martin Conroy (Larbert) 3 for 17lb including a 9lb 12oz Rainbow and 2 Browns and Gary Waugh, Airdrie, 4 for 14lb including a 6lb Blue. OTHER FISHERIES BURNHOUSE LOCHAN (Bonnybridge) A change in the weather has brought down the water temperature, encouraging the bigger fish to become more active. Very good bags were taken from the top of the water on a floating line with buzzers, Claret Hopper's and Daddies. Small nymphs are taking some good bags, fished on a long leader very slowly. Yellow Dancers and Vivas have had some very good results again this week. Come up and give it a go, the loch is fishing very well. The biggest fish last week was taken by James Moffat from Denny who caught a splendid rainbow that weighed in at 12lbs 4oz. Some of the week's best catches included Ian McGregor from Falkirk - four fish for 18lbs, David Hartley from Alexandria - four fish for 12lbs 12oz, Frank Rankin from Bishopbriggs - two fish for 10lbs and dam Allan from Kincardine - three fish for 10lbs 12oz. NEWTON FARM. (Wormit, Fife) The 16 anglers fishing the MacMillan Cancer Relief Comp on Saturday caught 38 fish for 84lbs 2ozs and raised over £1600 in sponsorship for the charity. A good day's work! Ronnie Leuchars took 1st prize with 8 fish to 17lbs. He got a shock when he found one of the 2 brook trout stocked at Newton around 2 years ago, at 1/2 lb. The fish weighed 2lbs 8oz on Saturday! Dai Carruthers took 2nd with 4 -12lbs and Mark Chalmers and Iain McLeod took 3rd= with 4 - 10lbs 20oz. Gordon and Katherine are giving anglers a special deal in October. Any angler weighing in a 3 fish basket will be eligible, and the top 5 baskets every month will get free entry to a grand final in March, with a substantial cash prize. Fish at Newton are coming well to mini lures now, with the blob starting to feature in the returns, along with a Newton Favourite, the Damsel. courtesy of Flyfishing Scotland www.flyfishingscotland.com check out the new quiz and win a bottle of Famous Bowmore Malt Whisky

Bowmore European Flyfishing Championships 8th - 12th September OPENING DAY CEREMONY The normally quiet Main Street in Bowmore on the Isle of Islay reverberated to the stirring sounds of the Islay Pipe band as they led the parade of competitors down from the famous Round Church to Bowmore Distillery home of the event's sponsor. Immediately behind the pipe band were over 100 children from schools from all over the island who were dressed as either a trout or a fishing fly and what a fantastic sight this was as they snaked their way fish like down the historic street. Then came the teams themselves led in alphabetical order by Belgium and taking up the rear position was host country Scotland led by a proud team manager George MacKenzie. There was a huge welcome given to Fernando Mihailescu who is representing Romania single handed as their angling federation could only afford to send one representative. The big Romanian said ''I am extremely moved by this wonderful reception and am looking forward to the event getting underway on Wednesday,'' There were speeches of welcome from SANA International organiser, Neil McCarry, Bowmore Distillers sales and marketing director Kenneth McKay followed by the official opening of the event by James Ferguson, president of Fips-Mouche. The flags of each country were ceremoniously placed at the podium where they will remain for the duration of the competition and then it was the turn of Scottish team manager George MacKenzie to read the Olympic ideals of fly-fishing. At the reception following the ceremony representatives from the teams involved were unanimous that this was by far the best opening ceremony they had ever been at. The English team members stated that this had been a brilliantly organised opening ceremony and manager Ian Greenwood said ''I've been at fly-fishing championships all over the world but this opening ceremony was quite unique - simply the best I have experienced.'' DAY 1 The first day of the Bowmore European Fly Fishing Championships got off to an absolute scorcher of a start with a change in the weather that saw bright skies, hot sun instead of the wild, windy conditions that the experts had predicted. In fact at the lunch break at Ballygrant, Jimbo, our man on the spot spoke to French team member Caleri Yann and two of his supporters who simply could not believe that the weather was so Mediterranean. One said ''This is not Scottish weather - where is the wind and the rain?'' Good question Anyway the conditions certainly made fishing conditions tricky to say the least but at the end of the day the Italians lead the team event with a total placing score of 53 points. But the great news is that Scotland lies in second place with 54 points and that is just about as close as it gets. Remember this event is decided on the placings points system and what we have at present is that with a five man team and two fishing sessions the Italians have averaged a 5.3 place points per angler whilst the Scots are hard at their heels with only a .1 of a total placing point behind. You simply cannot get any closer than that. The much fancied French have 66 points, the also fancied Czech Republic squad has 67 but the English are well behind in ninth place with 80 points. But tomorrow is another day and the local experts are pretty certain that some much rougher weather is heading in from the Atlantic. If this is the case then it must be good news for the host nation but watch out for improved placings from the Irish who can really produce the goods when the going gets tough on the weather front. DAY 2 There was yet another dramatic change in the weather with day two seeing the competitors having to constantly switch tactics to match a mixture of bright sunshine, strong winds at times accompanied by torrential rain. After a tough morning session Scotland were lying first equal with Poland. But as everyone realised, the severe weather conditions, that saw two lost nets and a Swedish competitor taking swim at Gorm, were likely to throw up some surprises in the results. At the end of the second session Poland had retain their morning lead but the big story was the revival in English fortunes with them clawing their way up from day one's ninth position to lie comfortably in second place with 123 total placing points. Scotland had a bit of a struggle in the afternoon slipping back to third place but are still sitting comfortably with 128 points. The Belgium side, who are always a danger improved from eighth place to fourth with 131 points but Italy, the leaders from day one have slipped back to fifth place with 140 points. In the individual rankings day one leader Stefano De Martini has fallen back into fifth position, Scotland's Derick Logan has improved from sixth to fourth and is still strongly fancied. Stephane Vincent from France improved from fourth to second but a tremendous performance from Jozef Lach from Poland saw him rocket from place fifteen right into the top slot. FINALS DAY & RESULTS The European Fly Fishing Championships was an absolute nail biter right up to the very last few moments writes Jimbo who was on Islay covering the event. At the end of the day the gold medals went to the Polish contingent, Scotland took silver and the English squad picked up the bronze. But what an absolutely brilliant result this was for the boys in blue led by team manager George MacKenzie. Not only did the team put in a tremendous performance but members Derick Logan from Coldstream and Willie Fulton from Greenock picked up individual awards. Derick, Mr. Consistency himself, was placed sixth at the end of day one moved up to fourth place on the second but came through strongly in the final session to take the silver gong. Willie had a brilliant final day taking 8 fish that gave the placing points and fish number advantage to take the bronze medal. In the team event things were so tight that only six placing points separated Poland and Scotland and it was down to a mere two point margin between Scotland and England for the host nation to take the silvers. The weather couldn't have been better for such a prestigious event ranging from Mediterranean style on Wednesday, bright sun, wild winds and torrential rain on Thursday finishing off on Friday with perfect mild warm conditions that produced some exciting fishing. Wednesday was a difficult day that saw the Italians coming out tops with 53 points with Scotland hard on their heels with 54 and Poland lay third with 63. At this stage the English were well down the list with 80 points. Thursday's conditions really did suit the home countries with England and Scotland lying second and third but the Poles showed just how consistent they are but producing some great results on all the lochs to take the lead. The last session on Friday morning was as just about as tight as possible but despite producing some of the best individual performances over the three days the Scots were pipped by yet another sterling Polish performance. But had the Poles caught only one fish less then the Scots would have taken gold under the total placings scoring system. One of the Polish team caught a fish on his second last cast on the final session and this was enough to get the points advantage. Tough - but that's fishing Team manager George McKenzie said ''this was an absolutely brilliant performance from the squad who have worked so hard as a team - they thoroughly deserve this great result and I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.'' Scottish fisheries reports courtesy of www.flyfishingscotland.com BUTTERSTONE LOCH (Dunkeld) This week has produced a mixed bag in terms of both weather and fishing, culminating with a very hot bright and still weekend which still managed to show a reasonable catch return. Given half a chance there are fish to be had on or close to the surface - it must not be too bright and it must not be too windy in that order. Best methods are either intermediate lines with Damsels or Cats Whisker or possibly an Ace of Spade type patterns or floating line with Buzzers fished mid-water - these tactics have been working even in the bright conditions over the weekend. If it goes dull at all it's well worth some dries or traditional stuff on the surface, given a bit of ripple - Kate Mclaren or the Bibio. Cooler nights have started featuring in the weather pattern over the last week which I am hopeful will stop the water temperatures from climbing back to the levels seen earlier in the month. Heaviest fish for the week goes to Cupar Angling Club member Sandy Robertson who had a 7lb 2oz rainbow on a snatcher fished mid-water. Amongst the best club returns were Newtyle & Meigle Angling Club had 53 fish for 110lb 11oz, Cupar Angling Club had 25 fish for 60lb 11oz, Leslie & Glenrothes Angling Club had 32 fish for 72lb 1oz and the SSEB Angling Club had 36 fish for 75lb 7oz. Prospects - well, it would be nice to get some cool weather and rain, wouldn't it? But things are starting to pick up as long as it doesn't get too hot again. LOCH FAD (Isle of Bute) Amongst the better returns last week were Mr. Beaton from Rothesay with a cracking rainbow that tipped the scales at 10lbs and this fine specimen was taken off the bank at the south end of the water. Mr MacElchern from Lochgilphead had 10 fish weighing 16lbs 10ozs on a Brown Muddler, Balloch angler Joe France from Balloch caught 8 for 12lbs 4ozs on the Ace of Spades and the Viva and Mr. Kennedy (2 anglers) from Glasgow used small black flies from a boat to take 19 fish for 29lbs. GOLDEN LOCH (Newburgh on Tay) Anglers have had to adapt to the changing conditions during the past five days with the water temperature dropping 3 degrees, due to the colder evenings and stronger breezes. The fish have responded by becoming a lot more active in different places and although the biggest catches have been on the smallest of flies lately there has been some huge hatches of flies in the channel and under the trees at the east side giving the buzzer boys a lot of fun. Sunday early morning saw the loch coming alive with fish and swallows competing for flies and larvae, with good catches taking place all day the drop in water temperature has been well appreciated. Mr. J Paton from Auchtermuchty used the Bibio Hoppers and Diawl Bach to catch 3 for 9lbs and Mr Fulton, Glenrothes used small hoppers to take 3 for 8lbs. Mr I Ramage from Cupar had a nice specimen of 3.5lbs on a very small Kate McLaren, J Wilson, Dalgety Bay had 2 for 6lbs using dry flies. Local lads G Stewart and G Davidson, Newburgh, both had 3 each, Stewart catching on Dry flies and Davidson on buzzers. HOWWOOD (Renfrewshire) The biggest fish caught last week was a nice 12lb rainbow bagged on a Gold Bead Daddy by Bert Holden from Glasgow. Gus Notman from Erskine took 5 for 9lbs 5oz on a Damsel and Graham Bicker (Kilmarnock) took 10 on C+R on an Olive Suspender Buzzer. Other good catches came from Gregor Fisher from Glasgow with 7 on C+R up to an estimated 5lbs, Stewart Raebould (Johnstone) took 5 for 9lbs 12oz on a Diawl Bach and Brian Morgan had 3 for 5lbs 8oz on Buzzers. MARKLE FISHERY (East Lothian) There were some cracking fish taken last week with Colin Brash from Mayfield taking the biggest on a Mini Cat and this weighed in at 16lbs 8oz. Chris Grey from West Calder had 3 for 17lbs – best 11lbs on an Orange Nomad, Terry Brennan (West Calder) had 3 for 15lbs 6oz – best 10lbs and J McKenna used a Nomad to bag a brace for 16lbs – best 9lbz 8oz. Jack Hay from Haddington used a Damsel Nymph to take an excellent rainbow of 10lbs 8oz and on a subsequent visit had a nice one at 9lbs. NORTH THIRD TROUT FISHERY (Stirling) The week saw the weather swinging from one extreme to the other. Saturday and Sunday were very hot and then strong winds sprang up and were so bad on Thursday that the boats had to be cancelled. By Friday the weather was back to being very hot again. Considering these extremely difficult conditions, catches were actually very reasonable and a total of 358 trout, including 11 specimens, were landed. The biggest fish of the week weighed in at a massive 13lb 3oz and it was caught by Tom Monaghan of South Africa. This was Tom's biggest fish by a long way and he took it on a Mrs. Simpson whilst bank fishing at Robin's Bay. Regular angler Mike Willis of Dunblane took the second double of the week and this specimen weighed in at 11lb 5oz. Mike was bank fishing and ended the day with a total bag of 7 rainbows for 22lb 6oz. Another regular angler Ronnie Mitchell of Fishcross, had a cracking fish of 9lb 4oz in a total catch of 6 for 17lb 4oz. Mr. Young of Denny caught the third really big specimen of the week, with it weighing exactly 9lb. Mr. Young and his boat partner caught 7 rainbows for 18lb and returned a further 8 trout. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The best patterns last week proved to be the Damsel, Buzzers, Daddies and the Dunkeld fished for best results on either a floating or intermediate line. The Centre 1 AC from East Kilbride had a good day out taking 30 fish for 86lbs – best basket from John Graham with 5 for 16lbs 10oz. Frank Malkiewcz from Tullibody had 5 for 22lbs 8oz – best 6lbs 8oz on a Damsel, Graham King (Perth) took 3 for 8lbs 8oz – best 4lbs 8oz on a Damsel and Harry Graham (Glenrothes) caught 8 for 27lbs on the Damsel. Also doing well were Crawford Millar from Tillicoultry with 7 for 19lbs and Mark Brownrigg (Callander) had 5 for 17lbs 8oz on a Black & Olive Nymph. SWANSWATER A much more consistent week at Swanswater with some excellent fishing midweek and some superb bags taken. 388 fish averaging 2lb 10oz were landed with a good number of the total being 4lb to 5lb Browns along with some lovely Blues. Nymphs, especially Diawl Bach and PTN, were taking most fish with wet flies also doing well. The bright, hot conditions at the weekend called for lures to be used. The biggest fish this week was a cracking 12lb 8oz Rainbow, landed by Ronnie Loos, Stirling, in his week¹s total of 38 fish for 90lb 4oz. Also amongst the heavier class of fish were Davy Neilson, Carronshore, 2 for 10lb 10oz including 8lb 10oz Rainbow, Mark Mercer, Menstrie - 8lb 2oz Blue, Martin Baranowski, Bridge of Allan - 7lb 1oz Blue, William Hyde 3 for 12lb including 2 Browns, the bigger at 5lbs and Ian Whitfield, Denny, 5lb Brown. Also doing well were Gordon Stewart, Falkirk, 4 for 12lb 8oz including 2 Browns, Danny Doherty, Denny 3 for 9lb 4oz, Brian Kerr, Stirling, 4 Browns for 15lb 10oz and Willie Martin, Stirling, 3 Browns for 11lb. LOCH FITTY (Dunfermline) The main loch continues to fish well during both the day and evening sessions with anglers having to vary tactics according to the ever changing weather conditions. Janice Hall & Ailsa Smith from Kinross had a good session taking 10 for 14lbs, all on the Kate McLaren and the Canmore AC from Dunfermline had a good evening outing with their 8 rods returning with 28 fish for 35lbs with the Silver Invicta being the top taking fly. The Discovery AC from Dundee had a successful day outing with their 18 rods managing a very credible 60 fish for 76lbs mainly caught on the Damsel and Dunkeld. HOLL. (Nr Glenrothes) The ABC&D angling club from Fife had a good outing with their two best catches coming from W Coulston who had a nice fish of 8lbs 12oz on a Mallard & Claret and W Watson took one at 5lbs 4oz. Also doing well were Mr. Graham from Dunfermline with 4 for 10lbs 12oz on the CDC and Mr. Richardson (Kirkcaldy) who had 4 for 10lbs 4oz – best 4lbs on an Olive Bumble. KINGENNIE FISHINGS (Broughty Ferry) The best fish off the Specimen Pool last week was taken by ‘Mr Consistent’ – Jim Tait from Forfar and it weighed in at 14lbs 10oz with the Green Pea accounting for its downfall. The water is still gin clear and fishing well to all sorts of flies ranging from Buzzers to lures. Amongst the other good returns were Dave McCallum from Kirkcaldy who had 9 for 54lbs – best 9lbs 12oz on Buzzers, Frank McCabe (Monifieth) took 4 for 28lbs – best 9lbs on the Damsel and Keith Clark (Dundee) had 4 for 26lbs – best 9lbs 8oz on the Bunny Leech. The Bankside Pool is fishing exceptionally well in the evenings with Hoppers and CDC’s taking the fish on a highly consistent basis. Jim Wood & Davie West from Broughty Ferry had 9 for 22lbs on Beaded Hoppers, Gilbert Cheetham (Monifith) took 4 for 11lbs on Blobs and Bob Geddes (Arbroath) caught 4 for 9lbs 12oz on the Daddy.

Subject: Reports from Jim Boyd
BUTTERSTONE LOCH (Dunkeld) It's back to the west end of the loch for best results where casting into the lilies has been quite effective for some. Big fish alley was revisited on Sunday with a total of three larger fish coming to three different anglers representing three different angling clubs. First in was Jim Prentice from Glenochil Association with an 8lb 10oz rainbow. Then came Bill Salmond fishing with Edinburgh Flydressers who had an 8lb 14oz rainbow taken on an olive booby in mid water. But star of the show was 15 year old Callum Martin, fishing with Falkirk Kingfishers who netted a 10lb 6oz rainbow which took a damsel fished on an intermediate line. There was some debate concerning what his mother would have to say when presented with a mound of fish weighing around 20lb when he got home! Amongst the top angling clubs were Balbeggie Angling Club (7 boats) with 33 fish for 79lb 12oz, Newtyle & Meigle Angling Club (8 boats) caught 45 fish for 125lb 7oz and the Canmore Angling Club (6 evening boats) managed 33 fish for 88lb. Day sessions are still fishing better than evenings so we could be doing with a spell of more settled weather and warm evenings to get some more consistent rises
BOWDEN SPRINGS (NR. Linlithgow) The Black Fritz, Buzzers and the Green Damsel have all worked well on the Fly Loch where the fish seem to spread pretty evenly over it. But two 'hot spots' have been the south bank points and the dam wall. There were some good catches last week with Mr. Beattie from Falkirk bagging a brace at 5lbs on the Black Fritz and Mr. Newbigging (Linlithgow) had a nice blue trout of 3lbs. The Bait/Fly Loch has also fished well with the south bank points and dam wall being the best areas especially to anglers using maggots and green power bait. Those doing well included Mr. Allison from Larbert with 3 for 6lbs on maggots and Mr. Tyson had 6 for 8lbs 8oz.
BURNHOUSE LOCHAN (Bonnybridge) The very bright weather made the fishing pretty hard going but despite this those who persevered with a floating line teamed up with the Claret Hopper, Damsel Nymph, Montana and Viva did well. John Nicholson from Bonnybridge had the biggest fish last week, a rainbow that tipped the scales at 5lbs 4oz. Also doing well were Grant Hendry from Falkirk with 2 for 7lbs, Steven Smith (Glasgow0 had 2 for 6lbs 6oz, Jim Curry (Balloch) took 4 for 11lbs 6oz and Jim Hamilton (Banknock) had 3 for 9lbs 4oz.
COYLE WATER (Ayrshire) There were some excellent catches taken last week but none more important than that made by six year old Richard Murray fishing with his dad for the first time. Using a 7-foot rod teamed up with a short leader and sight bob this fast learner soon had two cracking fish on the bank to weigh in at 5lbs. Also doing well were Michael McKenzie from Coalburn who used Buzzers to bag 2 for 6lbs, Mr. Kilpatrick from Stewarton had 2 for 5lbs 8oz on the Damsel and Hugh Munro (Ayr) took 2 for 5lbs. Also doing well were John Dunsmuir from Kilmarnock with a nice fish of 3lbs 8oz on the Buzzers and g Stevenson (Kilwinning) had 2 for 5lbs on the dry fly. The bait pond has kept the anglers happy all week with regular bags of fish and Stevie Clark from Ayr used worm to take his 4 for 8lbs and I McMillan (Glasgow) used power bait to take 4 for 8lbs 8oz.
LOCH FAD (Isle of Bute) The biggest fish taken off last week was a beauty of 11lbs 8oz taken on a Dawson's olive by Mr. Leitch from Edinburgh whose boat had 12 fish for 30lbs 8oz. Mr. McCallum & partners from Paisley shared 16 for 24lbs 8oz with the killing patterns being the Yellow Humungus, Mr. Keenan from Largs took 10 for 15lbs 4oz and on their second visit the Leitch party had 7 for 11lbs 8oz plus 10 returned and the best patterns were the Soldier Palmer and the Damsel fished at the Boathouse/Woodend shore.
GOLDEN LOCH (Newburgh on Tay) Visitors have enjoyed the fishing this past week tremendously with the fly pattern changing from day to day. Some days the fish will only take buzzers and then with a small change in the temperature the next fly taking the fishes fancy could be hoppers or damsels. Getting it right for some has meant a big reward as there has been a encouraging appearance of bigger fish that live on the bottom coming up to cruise around on the surface, unfortunately for some finding what they will take has been elusive. Mr Bill Taylor, Dundee however got it right with a black and green shrimp landing beautiful rainbow of 11lbs that fought for nearly an hour. Mr. Wilson, Glenrothes had in his bag of 3 a blue at 4lbs 12oz and several large fish have been dodging in and out of the weed bank giving anglers headaches with their casting. Andy Colthart from Glenrothes had a good day catching 3 for 11lbs with one at 5lbs. The average fish size for the week is 2.7lbs
GLENSHERRUP (Glendevon) The fishing has been excellent with very good 'top of the water' tactics working well. The best fly patterns have been various Buzzers, CDC and Hoppers. Amongst the top catches were Dunfermline Railway Club with 31 for 57lbs 14oz, Mr. Lowe had 8 for 16lbs, Mr. Williamson took 10 for 24lbs and Mr. Thomson had 10 for 20lbs.
HOWWOOD (Renfrewshire) It was a tremendous week for 'biggies coming' with no fewer than four being bagged. Tony Gribben from Linwood used a CDC to bag a beauty at 11lbs 8oz but 'fish of the week' catcher was George Milligan who won the heaviest fish prize in the bait competition with a specimen that tipped the scales at 11lbs 10oz. Casting supremo Jim Tomlinson from Prestwick used a wee Connemara Black to take a fish of 11lbs and Ian law (Neilston) also had an 11lb fish on a small Greenwell Spider. Boat anglers Graham Steel & Robert Bonner from Paisley shared 10 on C+R - up to 4lbs on the CDC and Jim Thomson (Glasgow) had 3 for 6lbs 8oz on the CDC. Charlie Marsano from Linwood won the bait competition with 11 fish for 21lbs 2oz, second placed was Robert Bonner (Paisley) with 8 for 16lbs 10oz and Mr. Weir from Glasgow came third with 7 for 13lbs 5oz.
